I went to Korea for a few times for business purposes so I have good knowledge what the food should taste like. The good point, to begin with, is generally the dishes were cooked to a good standard. The bad point, however, is that the portion size is really poor especially on rice/noodle which isn't enough for 1 person to be filled. Looking at the final bill, I think maybe I should go to central London?

The lady in charge was very rude, came across very frustrated when we had a couple of questions. Food also came out very slowly maybe, although this may have been because we arrived 20 minutes early. The korean bbq wasn't true korean bbq as it was cooked in the kitchen, even though we asked if we could have it at the table. The sushi was actually decent, only reason why I didn't give 1 star. Best thing was the aggressive reaction when we didn't feel like paying the "discretionary" service charge.

Always good food at Hoshiya and the service is friendly and not overbearing. We love eating here and especially appreciate that its a hidden gem as it doesn;t look like much from the outside. But then, its the food that counts and always delivers.

We have been coming to this restaurant for over 6 years. Food and services were very good initially but in the last 2 years not only the quality of the food, the portion size have worsen, the lady owner is simply rude. Half way talking to her she just walked off. This happened 2 years ago and we stopped coming here but thought may be we should give it another tried tonight. Exact same thing happened. The food was of much lower quality and smaller portions, the lady owner was just so very rude. We will not be coming here again.

The restaurant itself may be unsuspecting and even a little uninviting with its dark front and spiral staircase leading down. But this all changed when greeted by the wonderfully friendly and welcoming hostess. The menu itself has all the Korean and Japanese classics from sushi to bulgogi, bento boxes to classic soups. Being greedy and tempted we ordered a wide variety. Our beef, chicken and pork bulgogi dishes were generously portioned and came packed full of flavour. The Sundubu, a Korean spicy tofu soup, was a highlight of the meal, loud vibrant flavours that stands out. Sushi rolls were crafted beautifully and the Chicken Yakitori was succulent. Their choice of teas is also the perfect accompaniment to the strong flavours on display. The website slogan, "Not just good... delicious food" lives up to to the name.

We have visited this restaurant a few times in the past and have always had a good experience with good quality food. We ordered a takeaway for the first time tonight, to celebrate my daughters birthday and are all very disappointed. Our impression is that they have cut corners and used lower grade meat, so rather than chicken breast, the meat was brown and in places still pink. The beef was very poor quality, full of fat. Shame, won’t be using or visiting again.

Been in this place for my partner's birthday. There was no social distance measures in place, the restaurant (which is in the basement so zero ventilation) was already crowded for its space when we arrived (there were 6 people, plus us 8 in total) and after 5 minutes a table of 6 arrived. The waitress took our order wrong but came to the table to state we ordered what she wrote and since that moment she had a very rude attitude (she bumped into my partner, took a plate and made all the sauce leak on the table just to give a couple of examples). The food was oily, gross and the sushi was warm and seriously disgusting. I feel appalled because I took my partner there for his birthday after 6 months avoiding going out for meals due to covid, and I trusted the positive reviews. The result was a massive anxiety due to lack of social distance and no tracking of COVID-19 throughout NHS track and trace. Would definitely not recommend in normal situations, less so in the current situation with covid

We arrived around 7pm while only 3 tables were seated, one had already finished and the second one were eating and third one about to finish. We were seated immediately in a table in the middle of this small croud and without socially distancing table. Our order was taken in a reasonable time considering that only one waitress was working but then we waited 26 minutes for the first dish (tempura) to arrive to our table. We were served by the female owner, but we noticed that they got us a vegetable tempura when we ordered prawn tempura. When we mentioned this the dish was taken from our table and she stormed out. 30 seconds later our waitress came to state that we did order indeed the vegetable tempura in a quite rude manner. We insisted that we ordered the prawn tempura and not vegetable one and she left ( no apologies or anything like that). Couple of minutes later they got us the prawn tempura which was really oily and while the waitress was trying to place the dish in the table in a quite abrupt manner she bumped on my shoulder and almost dropped the entire plate she apologised and left the table. Our second dish was a vegetable udon which to be honest was quite gross with a dominant flavour of god knows what, I never tryed something awful like that. My partner had less than a 1/4 of the dish but I was too hungry and it was still a bit edible so I ate mine and helped with her plate. We were about to leave due to the poor service and hideous food but it was my birthday so after thinking for a while we decided to try a bit of sushi. We were waiting to ask the menus again while our waitress was serving other tables (they had a new table of 6 and another couple while the rest tables mentioned at the begging left) while this was happening the female owner was missing and the male owner was at the till playing solitaire ( yes we could see him from our table in a certain angle) We got the sushi plates but they removed the soya dishes and no new was brought so we ended up using a large dish that we had in the table for our napkin and chopsticks. The first sushi plate was looking horrendous with a spicy orangey sauce on top, the second one looked better but it was quite gross with those "fish eggs" hanging around and the warmish rice, still edible both of them but even the sushi from Tesco is way better. In this whole time no one approached our table to ask a feedback for our food. So we reached a point that we didn't want to order dessert or anything just pay and leave. Not to mention that there was no QR code available for NHS track and tracke, neither they took any contact information from us

So i contacted Hoshiya asking about Vegan option. The owner said to me they usually serve 2 vegan a year so they dont really prepare anything for vegan but they have vegetarian option. She sounded quiet annoyed that I asked but I said that's ok and will call back shortly to order food. we called back 20mins later, one of orders were chicken katsu(£8.90 served with rice). but the staff told me that as the owner walked pass, she told the staff they do not serve with rice but chicken katsu on it's own. I told the staff that the take away menu( which I picked from the restaurant two weeks prior to this) stated that it comes with rice. The staff said she also thought that was it but the owner told her no. I would understand if things are out of stock but rice shouldn't be out of stock as rice is their main ingredients for most but I was very disappointed that the owner changed it as it seems however she feels like and also I asked for vegan option earlier??? I felt let down and upset the way she chose to act this way. paying only chicken katsu for £8.90 seems quiet alot especially you drive all the way to collect the food. Is it worth it? NOT AT ALL! Never going back there are plenty of other place for nice Korean/Japanese restaurants who would have nice customer service. When you put the menu for customers to pick then you shouldn't change without notice!

Thought it would be better as it was crowded that night but then again, it was Sat night. Can't always count on public opinion I guess. Nothing stand out in either direction regarding service or ambience. Just so-so. However the food gets a lower rating. We decided on Korean so I have no idea if the Japanese is any better. Presentation is appetizing but lulls you into a false sense of security as we discovered. (BTW, if you want Korean BBQ, better dig deep in your pocket as it's rather pricey.) Ordered japchae as a starter. Very oily and flavour was just OK. We both got bi bim bap, one beef and one seafood. The beef was good but the seafood was of poor quality and tasted like it was sitting around. Bad combo of mushy mussels with tough squid. I didn't have the option to change as it was impossible to flag a server who was available so we just finished and left disappointed. Could've been an off night as they were not lacking for customers. May try again but will stick to the Japanese menu.

We ordered our drinks, they were fine and didn't take long to get to our table. We ordered our food and it took ages to arrive, about 45 minutes. When the food arrived, it came in dribs and drabs. A few people had finished their dinner before others arrived. We ordered more boiled rice but it arrived right at the end when there was barely any food left to eat t with. By this time the restaurant has 2 more tables (one of three and another of 4).It was a complete disaster to be honest and to top it off, my food had a hair in it. After waiting so long to have found hair in my food was just utter horrible. The service was fine, the young lady who works there (the waitress) was friendly and apologetic but the manager didn't seem all there. It ruined my sisters birthday. We will never go back there. My husband has been raving about the newly opened Japanese and Korean restaurant, Hoshiya in West Byfleet. He went there for lunch with work colleagues and absolutely loved it. He was waiting for an opportunity to take the family and so we went on Friday evening.I've had bad Sushi in the past and usually shy away from ordering it. My husband insisted on the Sushi. He swore by it and said it was fresh and tasted amazing when he had eaten before. I succumbed to his insistence and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. We had ordered a variety of Sushi and each and every one was unique in flavour and delicious. The mains were fantastic too. The service is good, staff are friendly, helpful and courteous. The decor is simple and clean. Although it's a basement restaurant, it is spacious. I like the look of their menu and there is so much more that I want to try so will definitely go back again. The portions are generous. My only disappointment was that they didn't have the green tea ice cream that I ordered for dessert but that is inconsequential. I enjoyed every morsel of my meal and am hungry for more. I can very confidently say that it's the best meal I've eaten out this year. No, it's not the Sake talking.:)

2nd time back since change of management and so pleased that we now have a great Japanese restaurant in West Byfleet. Food was fresh and very tasty. Service was really good as well. Altogether a much better experience than previous visits. I hope it gets the local support that it deserves!

My wife and I, and various friends have visited here frequently over the past year or so. The food has always been really good, and we've tasted most of the menu! The sushi is clearly freshly prepared, extremely tasty with clean flavours typical of good Japanese. The hot foot is really flavourful, fresh and comforting (especially the miso, some of the best I've ever had). You pay an appropriate price for the quality of the food. It's now under new management which is awesome as the service has really stepped up. The manager is friendly, waiters and waitresses attentive and polite. It's really a lovely evening showcasing the best of Japanese cuisine

Oisi with the new management in place has brought a freshness to this very good Japanese restaurant in West Byfleet. Our third visit to Oisi but first since the change of regime and it was the best experience so far.The food was well up to 'West End' Japanese restaurant standards and whilst the setting - in the basement down a spiral staircase is a little dingy - it does add to the feeling of not being on a main road in a Surrey suburb. We skipped the set dishes and opted for a selection of Sashimi, Nigiri and various Maki. The Eel Dragon Uramaki was wonderful and a whole new taste experience. All together the meal was excellent.Any gripes, only one and that was we were left with an un-wiped table after the plates were cleared. Clearly an oversight in the dim light with black tables and not one to make a fuss over but still a touch shoddy. As I have written before Oisi in West Byfleet is worth travelling to, as we did by train, to get there and will be doing so again and again.

So pleased Oisi has been re launched under new management and back to its high standard of a few years ago. We had a fabulous meal there recently, the sushi and indeed every dish was carefully prepared beautifully presented and quite delicious. Well done!

This was my second visit, since the change of management. The service was faultless and food exceptional!Do try the blackened cod with miso or the aubergine with miso. The yellowfin sashimi was beautiful, but my favourite was the tempura prawn, with avocado, sticky rice and sauce, wrapped in a seaweed cone! Will be back soon!

Having moved to Woking recently, we were disappointed by the number of chain restaurants. However, oisi was a very pleasant surprise. A little overpriced perhaps, although not that bad at all by sushi restaurant standards, but a good choice of dishes (the miso aubergine is delicious and something you don't often see on menus). We went with our toddler today (our second visit) and the waitress brought him peppa pig cutlery and cups, and a brilliant pair of kids chopsticks. It was the first time he has used chopsticks and he ate brilliantly, by himself. Very helpful staff, always a warm welcome, and the manager helped us up the stairs with our pram. A welcome addition to the local area, we will definitely go again. Ok, so it's not Nobu, but it's not £200 a head either and it definitely beats another trip to cafe rouge. The food on both our visits has been very good.

Good selection of Japanese and Korean food. Enjoyed the greeting and Japanese/ english conversation from our waitress which made us giggle when she described the sizzles! Nice mix of sushi and hot dishes, beef was wonderful.Very quiet on a Thursday evening, busy on Friday and Saturday. Will also pick up a take away next time around.

We last came here a few years back to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. One quiet Saturday afternoon we decided to revist and trekked down the A3 to West Byfleet. The restaurant was empty except for the staff and us. We sat down at the same table we had before and looked at the menu. I think the place is under new management. We like sushi and sashimi and it did not disappoint. The fish was very fresh and the warm sake went very well with our order. The actual size of pieces of the sushi was quite small but there was plenty of it. This made picking up with chopsticks, dipping into the sauce and wasabi easier than usual. The staff were friendly and even came up with a Japanese version of mis en bouche for us to try... It was a form of seaweed that I had not had before and was delicious. The bill for two, including quite a lot of sake and the tip came to just under £150. This is not cheap but I felt we got what we paid for. I hope this restaurant continues as I would love to go back and it is a lot quicker getting from Guildford to West Byfleet than to London for similar quality food.

I visited Oisi yesterday with a girlfriend - we both love Japanese food and my friend has lived in Tokyo for 4 months and is well versed in Japanese dining. Oisi is centrally located in West Byfleet and is situated in a pleasant cellar-style restaurant with friendly staff.I was seated for a long 10 minutes without being offered any drinks or even a look at the menu for the evening. Choosing a selection of dishes for the evening was unusually difficult - we both like sashimi and only the set menu (course C) offered a decent portion (6 pieces) of sashimi @ £59.90 each, which we thought was over-priced.In the end we chose set menu course A (£25.90pp) and set menu course B (£45.90pp) plus 4 pieces of tuna sashimi at extra cost, along with a reasonable bottle of Fleurie at £28.The miso soup was enjoyable along with the house salad and tempura. However both portions of gyoza were soggy and really quite unpleasant. The soy sauce was weak and tasteless and the wasabi had no strength - I could eat a whole portion in one go which suggests it was either old or well past its best.My mains of salmon teriyaki was nothing special - I've prepared better myself, but the huge disappointment was my friends Oisi sushi set which was badly made; crumbling and quite tasteless. I cannot believe anyone would expect this kind of meal from a Japanese restaurant which was proud of its culinary offers. Before the evening came to a close our dessert comprised green tea ice cream - served in a heavy glass dish which slipped from the waiter's tray and all over my white cardigan. The staff seemed incapable of dealing with this situation, and the waiter was more concerned that the spoons were out of place on the table than the fact that the heavy glass bowl had bounced of my foot (ouch!) before shattering all over the floor. My new white cardigan was ruined and I have washed it 3 times and the stain is permanent - I certainly couldn't wear it for the rest of the coldish evening and just felt like going home. The restaurant offered us a 30% discount and two £25 vouchers for a return visit, but for the quality of food and the experience provided we felt the £80 we paid seemed excessive. I also don't like the waiter "hovering" for payment before I've read the bill. Service was not included in the bill and we didn't offer a tip, although normally we would tip generously.I'll give both vouchers to staff at the Sam Beare Hospice but tbh we've both eaten at far superior Japanese restaurants for a similar cost. I was also concerned to see that there was a notice in the ladies toilet requesting used toilet paper to be put in the waste bin provided rather than down the toilet. I am therefore seriously concerned about the hygiene issue at this establishment.Maybe the fact there were only 4 covers for the whole Friday evening suggests that discerning gastronomes have already chosen to go elsewhere.

My husband and I have wanted to try this restaurant since we moved to Surrey from London, we were not disappointed! The atmosphere is lovely and very quiet as it's below street level, the staff were so friendly and helped us pick unusual dishes and the only word to describe them is delicious, the tuna tataki is definitely the best thing, we had it for starter then ended up ordering another one instead of dessert it was so good. We we'll 100% be going back again!

I have been going to Oisi for the last 4-5 years of my life and every single time I love it! It has some of the best Sushi I have eaten in the UK, (where, for an island, is particularly difficult to find good quality fish). However Oisi has a nice variety, the fish is well cut, the taste is good and so is the presentation. The service is friendly and the place is nice and quiet. Will repeat again and again

What a fabulous restaurant. The owner and his lovely wife are always so welcoming and it makes you feel like you are in their part of the world. Their waitressing staff vary from visit to visit but we have always found them to be polite and helpful. Our enjoyment of Sushi comes from eating it with our son and his Canadian wife. So returning from a holiday it was necessary to find a good sushi restaurant that could be enjoyed back home in good old Blighty. We found it in Oisi. It's a lovely basement restaurant that ensures you forget where you are as there is no windows. For the time you are in there, you have left West Byfleet and arrived in Japan. The menu is immense and needs to be read. All too often we get the same things but reading the menu properly allows you to find some very different dishes. To date we have not found anything we dislike and certainly have enjoyed everything we've tried. Numerous friends that we have taken there agree and all have wanted to return and all have.Japanese food is such a delicate cuisine and tends to be a London based restaurant but having found Oisi it is great to go out for such a different, delicate and quality meal that is on our doorstep and saves the journey into London. The food is beautifully served and top quality. There are good wines, beers and Saki (served warm or cold) to compliment the meal. Leaving the restaurant, there is always a most polite farewell from the owners and their staff. Exiting via the staircase onto the road brings you back to the UK again and looking forward to the next visit. Thank you at oisi.

A bit like looking at houses, a second visit to a restaurant will pretty much confirm whether you like it or not. I do!My first visit was a business lunch whilst this last one was an evening celebration with my wife and Oisi did not disappoint. The sushi/sashimi platter we had as a main course was getting close to some famous London restaurants in quality terms. The starters equally so and the wine good at reasonable prices.I'm afraid I don't recognise some of the other reviews as being of the same place. I guess the adage is true "you can't please all of the people........" We however shall return for a third time at least.

I don't usually take such a disliking to a place but Oisi is not good value for money at all. Prices are extremely pricey for what they offer and staff are fairly rude and seem like they do not have much time for you!!The decor is quite nice but I am not a fan of no windows (which they cannot help I know). Overall this is not the place to go if you fancy sushi in my eyes.

Nice food, nice service, but the price is expensive. We did want to order more sushi but the price stops us. I was surprised the presentation of sushi was not in high class as the price. I will go back again, but just wish the bill can be smaller.

I love the food and the atmosphere and could probably order 3 meals instead of one, but the price seems too high when you go with children. I have been there probably 5 times but dont go anymore as I feel its overpriced. However if it was just me and my partner then I would go!

Tasty food washed down with some heart warming saki. The sashimi was succulent and beautifully presented. Unfortunately the edamame beans were served up frozen, which kind of spoilt the image of freshness, but this was soon rectified with a blast in the microwave and a profuse apology. Main courses were all tasty, spicy and of good quality. Overall I would recommend this friendly restaurant and we will be returning.

Am sorry to say this because I really wanted to find a local sushi place that was great - and this was far from.My boyfriend and I have just spent £50 on some really not nice rolls and warm sashimi - which in itself is just wrong. The spider roll was no less than absolutely disgusting and we've left half of what we bought. Overall, we are very disappointed, which to be frank is an understatement. Am shocked by the reviews I've read as they really set an expectation we'd have a pleasant evening and good food, and this is so far removed from reality I can't believe it's the same place these other people are talking about. You'd expect a catering company with a restaurant would be decent but this was the worst sushi we've ever had (and we've had a lot), a complete waste of money, and I just hope we don't get sick now as that would really be the icing on the cake. Not happy customers.

This truly is a great place to go for a great Japanese food experience. We potentially ordered far too much food but it gave us a great opportunity to taste as much of their selection as possible and there were no weak points. We were tended by a highly professional waiter who provided a service rarely seen in other restaurants, his knowledge and attentiveness were second to none. I recommend this restaurant for couples, families or anyone who looking for somewhere to eat in the Byfleet area.

Oisi sushi is very good quality. As it was our 1st visit we decided to go for the set menu and got to experience a range of their food - all delicious.However.....overall the menu prices are very expensive, we were one of only a few tables on a Friday night so it lacked a little atmosphere and the service was a little lacking on attention (wrong dishes, forgotten dishes, no menu guidance).Overall we left feeling a little disappointed with the experience despite the friendly staff and great sushi.

Returned here for our works meal in June having first isited it in 2013. From the outside if you blink you'll miss it....Its just a doorway that leads you down a spiral staircase into a basement which has soft, atmospheric lighting. The waiters and waitresses are very helpful if it is your first time there or you want to try something new. The food is hot...not warm, and is very pleasing to the eye. Whether you are with friends or as a couple, this is the place to go. Already looking forward to our next visit.

I went to Oisi last week on a recommendation. The service was excellent- a really friendly waiter who helped us pick dishes and was very attentive. We had sushi and some other dishes including Teriyaki salmon and tempura prawns. The sushi was fresh with generous portions and the tempura prawns were huge! Sadly the restaurant was extremely quiet- perhaps the problem there is signage as they are so tucked away. The restaurant certainly deserves to be busy and we will definitely be returning! In my experience it is extremely rare to find good Japanese food in quiet areas like West Byfleet and Oisi has achieved it!

When I first passed by this tiny restaurant entrance in West Byfleet I thought it was closed. Upon reading the sign I realised they were open and decided to go in. You have to go down a spiral staircase, and on the lower floor there is an amazingly open space with a lovely atmosphere and very helpful staff. Opening hours are a bit tricky, but if you're out for lunch or you're in for dinner, you'll have no problem at all.Food was really good, service was really nice and the atmosphere was very pleasant. When I walked in there was no one around (it was 1PM), but the owners put on a delightful Japanese music and the food was brought promptly to me. I think the specialty is sushi, as they had a large variety. But they have a lot of options to choose from if you're not a sushi fan.
