The Netherwood Hotel tried so hard yesterday to ruin my birthday. We wanted somewhere really nice to go for Sunday lunch to celebrate and came up with the idea of the Netherwood. We are lovers of Sunday Roasts, so I Googled “Netherwood Hotel Sunday Lunch” and the very first result was a link to the hotel’s own website and the menu, which included a choice between beef, lamb and chicken. I booked, received a confirmation, and we drove up to Grange-over-Sands from Preston. The hotel looks beautiful from the road, full of “olde worlde charm” behind beautiful gardens. On arrival, we were surprised and disappointed to find the restaurant deserted. We were instead taken to a table in the bar, where there were a couple of other people. We ordered drinks, chatted, and picked up the menus, which offered sausage and mash, fish and chips, and a burger. Our local cafe offers better! The waitress assured us that she has worked there for 18 months and they have never served a roast. The duty manager was summoned, and her attitude was combative. It was my fault, because I must have been on a different hotel’s website. It was head office’s fault, because they control the website. And so on. She failed to own the problem. She was unapologetic. We left – without paying for our drinks – and found a very pleasant country pub/hotel that served a most enjoyable roast lunch. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Three cheers for the Plough at Lupton!

This was our 2nd visit here and I would happily return and heartily recommend. Particularly if your family, like ours, includes a dog. This is as dog friendly as you could ask. The Bar manager had treats behind the bar and was very attentive to Ralph, as was the resident member of staff who lit the fire in the lounge for us! A very traditional style old country house hotel with history and character. Bedrooms modern and totally clean and comfortable. Very welcoming and friendly reception staff. Ralph was only not allowed in the main restaurant but our table was set up in the bar area and we could order off the bar or restaurant menu. Breakfast was excellent. Dinner off the a la carte menu offered good choice and all we had was well cooked and well presented and was lovely, but this type of dinner, unlike the buffet breakfast, does not always suit the hearty appetite. Not a bad thing always! We took drinks outside on the terrace and Ralph was exercised on the extensive grassed area at the front. A most enjoyable family weekend.

Ate in the restaurant with some friends, the menu looked good…a few options. I chose the scorched mackerel to start…well it came and was probably four mouthfuls of food, there was 3 slithers of mackerel…probably 2 inches long! Next course, lamb, which was tasty…the accompanying vegetables were luke warm and again, not much of them! I did point out the vegetables were not hot, the waiter said he could go and reheat it…thoughts of it coming back microwaved put me off…so I declined this offer. Finished with sticky toffee, which was ok. All in all, I found the mea disappointing… expensive for not much food, which was a real shame.

Tripadvsor requires a restaurant rating but I'm not in a position to give one so have to say: average - it may well be much better than that However the house, gardens, entrance hall and immediate environs were impressive and attractive - next time I would ring to check as I was disappointed not to stay.

We were tempted by the £20.19 2 course lunch for 2 offer which sounded nice. The menu had a good choice of starters but was limited to a choice of 4 main courses- beef, chicken, cod or lasagne. Sadly i chose the lasagne, being the vegetarian meal offer (I’m not vegetarian but do often like vegi meals). The lasagne was described as open lasagne broccoli lemon tovey. What a disaster! Broccoli with pasta sheets draped over and some of the strongest nasty tasting cheese sauce i’ve ever had the misfortune to taste. Perhaps a warning should be given about how horribly strong tovey is? Why make a sauce for a ladagne with this? It was disgusting. The others with me appeared to enjoy their fish and beef but i could not eat any of my meal. As it was a meal offer there was no attempt to take it off the bill.

The hotel is a lovely period building set in its own grounds , which are quite extensive, which also contain a cottage belonging to the hotel. We were slightly disappointed on arrival to find that our room was in the cottage , not in the hotel , something I had missed reading when booking. We were even more disappointed when we got to the cottage , as car parking was very limited outside (the option to leave the car in the ample hotel car park and walk was available) , and the room itself was small. It was also a disappointment to find that WIFI was only available in the hotel and not the cottage.

We arrived here Friday afternoon, with our 85 year old friend for a little treat . After climbing the steps we paused to take in the garden and sea view . Beautiful . We entered the bar ,it was empty but for a couple of customers. I went to reception to order , where l was told quite abruptly someone would come to serve us , they didn't!! After ten minutes or so a waiter entered the bar and began moving bottles about . When it was obvious he wasn't there to come and take out order my husband went to the bar to ask for drinks and sandwiches . He was told we were welcome to have a drink but they were short staffed so a sandwich was not possible . When our drinks arrived, sherry ,wine, and a pot of coffee , the coffee was the worst l have EVER tasted , tepid , flavourless , the warm milk !!! That accompanied it was a blue _grey colour , awful !!!served in thick white mugs . We were more disappointed for our elderly friend as our small treat had turned out to be a disappointment .

A group of us booked our annual festive season lunch at the Netherwood Hotel. We had been previously a few years back when everything was first rate, so our expectations were high. We placed our order from a very limited menu of only three choices per course, but were all able to find something acceptable. We had decided to have two courses the main and dessert. When the main course arrived we had never seen such small portions all huddled on top of each other in the middle of the plate. I had the turkey, two very small thin slices of meat which looked as though it had been carved from a roll of turkey as it had that rind around the exterior. The two sprouts cut into half must have been dipped in boiling water then out, they were raw and unpalatable. The only other veg was a teaspoon of mixed carrots and swede hidden underneath the meat. Dreadful, dreadful experience, nothing like it used to be.

The Netherwood Hotel is an imposing building in an amazing setting overlooking Morecambe Bay. The main public areas of the hotel are no less imposing and exude a warm and comfortable atmosphere. We have stayed at this hotel on many occasions in the past and felt the rooms were getting a bit tired decor wise. We however knew some had been refurbished and for this visit we stipulated that it was one of those we wanted. We were accordingly allocated a room in Rock House overlooking the bay. Our initial impression of the accommodation was favorable in that the bedroom had undergone quite a delightful transformation from the last time we stayed. It was therefore very disappointing to find the bathroom was not up to any standard having mold all around the bath, a broken shaving mirror, hairdryer repaired with sticky tape and a door that would not close. In addition the outside light was not functional making entry and egress from the building rather hazardous during the hours of darkness. These shortcomings were related to the hotel management for their consideration. The staff in general, during our stay, were very friendly and polite and the standard of cuisine was very acceptable.

This is a lovely hotel set in its own well tended grounds with stunning views of Morecambe Bay.On a nice day it is very relaxing to sit and drink on the garden terrace just soaking up the views.Staff in the hotel are wonderful - friendly, warm and welcoming. The hotel is oak panelled throughout and has a fabulous staircase. We had a very enjoyable one night stay prior to attending Cartmel Races. What prevents my review from showing the hotel as Excellent are a few minor niggles concerning the room.We were in Room 14 which is at the rear of the hotel. The room was immaculately clean but a little cramped. Although there are tea and coffee making facilities there were no biscuits as you would expect there to be in a 3Star AA premises. The kettle was on the window ledge but there was no electricity point so you had to shift a bedside cabinet out of the way to access one as the flex on the kettle was too short to plug into any that were on show. The bathroom door did not close properly and it had to be locked in order to close. There were no instructions to show how to operate the fixed hair dryer in the bathroom and it was only by chance that we tried a switch in the bedroom which actually operated it !Without doubt we would stay here again even despite these very minor niggles.

The Netherwood Hotel is Quaint and charming with a real 19th centuary feel to it. A lot of the original features and character still remains. We were well looked after by the friendly staff. Our room was a good size, large Kingsize bed that was very comfortable, kettle, tea and coffee, stunning view from window. Room was very dated and decor dull, room 24, was also a bit noisey due to being next to the lift. Lovely big fluffy towels in bathroom, there was a hairdryer but it is one of the ones attached to the wall and not very powerful, complimentry toiletries provided and good shower. We ate in the restruant both nights of our stay and the food was very good and well presented, the dinning area over looks the sea and watching the sunset added to the relaxing atmospher, tea and coffee was served in the bar/lounge area in front of a roaring log fire, perfect way to end a busy day sight seeing. the Hotel has a gym, swimming pool and spa which were under renovation at the time of our stay (although the Hotel did not inform us about this at time of booking :( ) The Hotel grounds are also very nice with plenty of bird song. Visited for the wedding if a friend and stayed at the hotel for ease it being in the same building. It was my first time being anywhere like Grange-over-sands (i am a city girl) and i was taken aback by the beauty of both the town and the hotel. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. It was a perfect location for the wedding and a beautiful place to stay. It helped that the weather was hot and sunny throughout the weekend so that we were able to enjoy ourselves. The room had an ocean view and was very spacious. The staff split the bed into two for us as i had stayed one night less than my sister. The decor is fitting with the hotel, if not a little dated. The shower was disappointing but it was otherwise very clean and a comfortable place to stay. Staff were kind and the food catered for the wedding was really nice with sizable portions.I will definitely be back and hopefully explore the town a bit more.

There for a friends Golden Wedding Celebration . Stayed for one night . Beautiful huge grand old building full of charm and character set in grounds in an elevated position with panoramic views overlooking Morcambe Bay. Heated indoor small swimming pool. Roaring log fires, comfy chairs and sofas, scrumptious afternoon tea. Were 65 of us for the evening meal . Choice of courses , everything seamless & faultless . Food was superb as was the attentive service from pleasant staff . Never ending supply of help yourself tea, coffee, juice , fudge, mints etc served in a lounge after the meal. Our bedroom was huge, big super king comfortable bed & pillows, large bathroom with over bath efficient shower. Was informed by staff later it was probably the best room in the hotel (room 8) and the one normally offered as the Bridal Suite ! Visited rooms other friends were staying in , all quite large with the exception of one which was for single occupancy. This and its bathroom were very compact but adequate.Breakfast the following morning was a little disappointing after the wonderful meal the night before. Help yourself cereals, fruit and croissants as you walked into dining room. The bowl of freshly prepared fruit had little left in , and it was only after choosing cereals each and sitting down to eat them did we get a menu offering porridge and the usual cooked fare of bacon, eggs, sausage etc. The fried bread was so brittle it was impossible to eat with cutlery - just shattered and the sausages were over spiced, over cooked with very tough skins, the bacon only just cooked - limp, soggy white rind. Some local people who know the Netherwood well commented in their experience the Hotel excels catering for functions and weddings when everything is always absolutely first class, superb in fact. Is their opinion much better then than if just going in for an evening meal. We enjoyed our too brief stay however, and if were to stay overnight again would know to order porridge and ask for crispy bacon ! Drinks and bottles of wine were a tad expensive but normal for this type of venue. Unable to comment on cost of evening meals as didn't pay with being Golden Wedding party guests. Am qualified however to state Cream, jam, fruit scone and pot of tea was £6.50 per person - delicious and very more-ish ! Booked the one night bed and breakfast before Christmas - was £80 each , £70 per person plus £10 per person supplement for a bay view room. As it happened they had a special offer running of only £75 for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast but we still had to pay the £80 each for just bed and breakfast, that being the tariff when we booked. I

Stayed here with my husband for a romantic evening away and although the hotel, staff and setting were great, our room - number 39, Rock House - was drab and uninviting. Stains on the carpet, really grotty shower screen, peeling paint on the wallls, grotty outdoor seating area - very dated furnishing and bedding. We have stayed in many hotels for £80 and have never felt so let down with the state of the room as we did with this . If it had cost £50, fair enough. Fortunately the breakfast was yummy and all the staff were friendly and helpful. We passed our comments on to Alex so hopefully she will pass them on to the owners who may have a look at the room and arrange to give it a spruce up. We'd stay again, just not in room 39. I gave 3 stars for the staff, setting and breakfast but I would have given just one star for room 39.

My wife and I had a most enjoyable lunch at the Netherwood today, taking advantage of their "2017" offer (2 course lunch for two for £20.17). Excellent value, superb menu, beautifully served by very friendly efficient staff. Warm welcoming atmosphere in this unique building. Lovely view too, even on this mostly sunless day, overlooking the vast expanse of shimmering silver Morecambe Bay. Many thanks, we'll be back!

We held our daughter and new son in laws wedding reception here on the 17th December 2016 and we were not disappointed. The hotel venue and staff were incredibly helpful, nothing was too much trouble, because of the number of guests at the wedding we ended up with the whole hotel at our disposal, which was especially nice as a lot of them stayed over and we had a couple of nights here. The hotel itself was decorated spectacularly for christmas and it made for some gorgeous wedding photographs. The wedding breakfast which catered for approx 120 guests, was excellent and most of our guests were impressed with the standard of the food. Even the night food was excellant. We were very lucky that the hotel let us have a firework display, which was gorgeous looking out to morecambe bay and we had our own entertainers and DJ which the hotel were very helpful with. The breakfasts in the morning were brilliant and plentyful and again because we had the whole hotel it was made even more special to see everyone again down for breakfast. The Sunday they're were approx 30 guests stayed over and we had a fabulous afternoon tea in the smaller restaurant, and then we had the small bar in the evening where we played games etc. Again the hotel couldn't accomodate us enough.I would wholeheartedly recommend this venue for a wedding/short stay as they made our daughters day magical

OK, where to start? We arrived on my 50th birthday and checked in. We were a party of 2 adults and two well behaved Shih tzu's. We had booked on their dinner bed and breakfast deal, pay for 2 nights and get a 3rd night bed and breakfast free. We had been allocated room 25 which was overlooking the bay (usually £10 extra per night). Really pleased as other hotels we stayed at elsewhere previously had done their best to give us the worst room in the hotel. We had many fabulous long walks down the promenade with the dogs which is flat and very accessible for those with disabilities. Dinner was booked for 7pm. We were greeted with lots of cuddles and treats for the dogs. People with dogs were allowed to eat anywhere except in the restaurant. The tables in those areas were coffee tables. After explaining I had a spinal problem the staff made space for a restaurant table and chairs. Nothing was too much trouble. When they brought the menu they had personalised it wishing me a happy 50th birthday! The food was outstanding every night. The best steak we had ever eaten. Served quickly and lovely friendly staff. We even ate here on our last night. Jumbo fish and chips was not cheap at £12.95 but was well worth it. The only negative comments I have are 1. No waste bins within the hotel grounds for people who are responsible pet owners picking up their dogs waste2. Dogs were not allowed to be left unattended in the rooms. Unfortunately some people chose to ignore that rule and left their dogs barking all evening disturbing those residents who were in their rooms. Just an idea.....We had a dining table in the library. Perhaps it or another area could be made into a dog friendly room with proper dining facilities ie. Dining tables. We had an amazing weekend and we have and will continue to recommend this hotel to our friends. Grange over sands is a gorgeous place and only a 10 minute walk away from this beautiful grand old hotel. Windermere and Coniston close by. Thank you Netherwood and your wonderful team for a memorable occasion. Jayne and DavidTeddy and Lottie

My wife and I have attended a number of work-related meetings at this hotel but this is the first time we have stayed the night. The room was unfortunately what we expected...it had character, but was rather dated and in need of refurbishment. It was a 'superior' room which meant it had lovely views across Morecambe Bay. Although the bathroom was clean, the over-the-bath shower was inadequate and the edging needed re-doing. The wardrobe had obviously been sprayed with furniture polish, but still smelt musty enough for us to not want to make use of it. The room was cold when we arrived, so we had to put the electric heater on. The room service is quite expensive compared to many other establishments. I have never had to pay £5 for a bucket of ice before! Breakfast in bed is an extra £7.50 per person and you can't have a cooked breakfast delivered for some reason! Despite this, the service in the bar was excellent and the three course dinner was excellent. Tasty, well-presented and the service was superb. There were always a lot of very attentive staff on hand and they were taking pride in delivering good service and being polite and helpful. Breakfast was delicious. Again...excellent service, taste and well-presented. The building exterior, the gardens, the entrance hall and stairs are all very attractive and feel cosy. The Christmas decorations are fabulous! If the bedroom had been better we could have certainly given a higher score. We will definitely be returning in the future, so will request a higher spec room if one is available.

We have admired this hotel over the years and always promised ourselves a stay there. We were not disappointed. This is an old ex stately home and listed building oozing with character and comfort. The staff are really friendly and on the ball. The rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We visited in November and the roaring fires were very welcome. We had dinner and the food was delicious. I can recommend the sticky toffee pudding soufflé! Breakfast was also very good. The view over the sea is terrific and for this quality the price is very reasonable. There is also a spa and swimming pool.We loved our stay here.

We were part of a wedding party at the hotel and booked very early to secure a room. We re-confirmed our booking a few days before our arrival and we're told we had a bay view room. On arrival we checked in and were given our room key. Our room was very small and the mattress on the bed was worn out and sagging badly. There was no Bay view unless we hung out of the window and craned our necks. After a bad nights sleep we were looking forward to using the spa facilities. On arrival we were informed the jacuzzi and steam room were both out-of service (long term). That only left a small pool and gym. Our experience with this and the room was very disappointing and avoidable as they could have informed us these facilities were out of action. The hotel, location and general facilities were very good and if it wasn't for the fact we were in a big wedding party these things would have totally spoilt our stay.

The building is very impressive but badly maintained, the rooms offering hope of something special are kitted out in Ikea furniture, this was particularly disappointing. The room with a bay view was in fact a roof view but if you leaned out the window you could see the bay in the distance. The most disappointing thing was the spa facilities, nothing was advised either by email or in the room or even mentioned at check in, that the facilities were closed (and had been for some time) and only the pool and gym were available. This was the one thing we were looking forward to after a long journey. The bed was extremely uncomfortable as the mattress should have been replaced years ago. The cooked breakfast included in our room rate was very disappointing, my plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and beans was delivered swimming in bean sauce.

We just wanted a few days away. I saw Netherwood and saw it look beautiful, I called up and booked. Yesterday full of anticipation we drive up. The frontage, reception and the bar were grand, very clean and nice. However the room was a little " plain" but we were in a turret and the view was lovely. I had to go down to reception to remind them I had booked champagne and truffles on arrival... the lady was lovely and sorted it out straight away. Until the chocolates and champagne arrived ( it was a surprise) I looked round the spa with my new husband... we were told at that spa wasn't working!! Very disappointed but still making the best of it .. it's out Honeymoon after all. We got back to our turret and champagne and chocolate were there it was lovely. I felt upset about the spa so we decided not to go, even to the pool.We had booked dinner for 8pm, we were shepherded back to the bar to order our food and wine so it was nearly 8:30 we were told they were busy! First we were given an Amuse Bouche ( a dry fish ball with a peashoot) not amusing. The starter we chose wood pigeon breasts on barley ( the wood pigeon came out it was like rubber with a bottom of leather) the pearl barely was curried?? ! I couldn't eat mine because i couldn't cut it, my husband battled on (army training) however couldn't complete the job. I waitress came and changed my pigeon and gave me a steak knife to cut it with, I managed one piece but the shot that broke a piece off my back tooth put me off. The sorbet arrived, it was more like ice cream but it was gelatinous and sticky ( I have pondered all night and am still unsure how they achieved something so horrible). This was left untouched. Then it was the turn of the main " star attraction" duck and steak. I was hopeful when I saw the duck it looked properly cooked, still pink and nicely presented ( if a little dated) the first mouthful was disappointing as it was all cold... then upon further inspection the orange goo ( carrot and orange purée) was like baby food with no taste or texture and watery. I looked over at my husband who was bravely battling with a dry burnt piece of cow. The presentation of the steak was " crappy 80's -esque " a big mushroom with a big Tomato plonked on top, and a tin pail of dry tasteless chips. At this point I started to cry, I got up and left the table. The " manager" stopped my husband and asked what the issue was. When he was told The reply was a resigned " yeah" We packed our Honeymoon bags that night and drove home in the early hours of the morning. But not before the restaurant "Manager" came out and asked to stay the night... I replied no... then he got rather agitated asking about the good ?!? Really now wasn't the time as I was backing out the car.The only good thing is that we didn't have to pay for this horrendous experience, and we have the knowledge to forewarn others! and we also have a ruined Honeymoon.

The hotel is a splendid example of Victorian architecture. Spacious, wood panelled rooms, an impressive staircase and beautifully terraced gardens all add to the ambience. The restaurant offered far reaching views and an exciting menu. Dishes were beautifully presented and unusual food combinations (beetroot sorbet and chocolate and olive tart come to mind) made for a memorable evening. Coffee was served in the residents lounge, another beautiful room.

My friend and I had been travelling around the country and staying in B&B's. We arrived here and it looked like a castle. We immediately worried that we might look out of place. Luckily, nobody seemed to notice! The staff were polite but I wouldn't go as far as to say friendly. We found our room after some minor Getting Lost and it was comfortable with a lovely view. Perhaps not as posh as the rest of the hotel would make it appear! There was a lovely bathtub though, so I got to have my first bath of the trip (so many hotels now just have a walk in shower). There was also a shower cap in the bathroom and I LOVE complimentary shower caps. So that made me happy. There was a heated towel rail which was great except that it kept the entire room quite balmy and stuffy all night. I loved walking down the corridors to our room - it reminded me of Harry Potter! Very stately and old fashioned, which gave it great character. There was a grand piano downstairs which could be played with permission and a very posh bar and restaurant. We ate there because there was nowhere else in the area, and it was pricey but worth it - well presented food with a complimentary starter, or I suppose you might call it an 'amuse-bouche'! Dessert was especially nice. It was posher and more formal than what I would normally feel comfortable with though. Breakfast was included in our price and it was very nice - full English with toast, cereal, fruit and tea on the side. The downsides: there was obviously a wood burning open fire in the hotel somewhere because the entire place smelled like stale wood smoke, which is quaint and charming at first, and then annoying after a few hours. One of the things I had been looking forward to was the pool and in fact it was a consideration when I booked it! In reality, the pool looked nothing like it did in the photo and was more akin to a children's training pool. In fact, there were children's swimming lessons happening when I was there, and the pool was only open to guests between 6.30pm and 8.30pm rather than until 10pm as it says on the web site - and there was a one to one children's lesson happening at the time I wanted to swim. I didn't really want to be in the tiny pool while that was happening. So I left again. It was a disappointment because I had brought my swimming costume on the trip especially. For this reason more than anything else, I'm giving the stay a 3 out of 5. Oh though, the grounds look lovely. They put me in mind of an Alice in Wonderland style tea party. Quite Victorian and posh.

A beautiful building inside and out. Pre dinner drinks in the bar lounge and dinner order taken by a pleasant lady (maitre d ?) taken through to the dinning room which is a large conservatory at the front of the building looking out over to Morecombe bay absolutely stunning. Starters of Pork belly and Broad Bean Falafel extremely good. Mains: Roast breast of barbary duck and Loin of lamb wellington, both looked very good and tasted even better. Deserts, Banana and Peanut butter cheese cake declared to be scrummy. I opted for cheese and my only criticism of the food is that there were only three small pieces of fairly ordinary cheese and commercial packet biscuits. Considering the price I would had expected more and better cheese and more up market crackers. The staff were very pleasant however all three of the waitresses asked us if everything was ok and were we enjoying our meal with each course, just one would have been better. However we had a lovely evening finished off with coffe in the lounge bar.

Staying in the hotel, I'd intended to have a simple one-course supper, but the menu intrigued me so I had deep fried pork belly with trimmings and sauces that worked well, followed by duck (a little overcooked if I'm picky) with perfectly cooked trimmings, and (not quite enough) scrummy sauce. All in all a great meal at a reasonable price with great service. Water on the table at the start, bread, amuse bouche (that needed a knife and fork and three or four bites) and an excellent fruit sorbet between courses. Ask for a window table and be there as the sun sets.

Two courses {starter and main) were beautifully cooked, presented and reasonably priced. My husband and I visited this hotel for a one night stay on Friday with family. The hotel is beautiful and dates from 1893. The approach to the hotel, which is set back for the main road is impressive and the gardens and grounds are beautiful and so well maintained. The rooms are really stunning with original wood panelling, stone fireplaces and chandeliers which are just a few of the original features. The reception is beautiful and really welcoming with comfortable sofas, fresh flowers and beautiful lanterns. Our room (9) was stunning with views over the sands. Very tastefully decorated in keeping with the age of the hotel but with little modern touches. The bedlinen was gorgeous as was the bathroom which was very light and stocked with Elemis products. The room was immaculate. We had drinks in the bar before dinner which were served by the lovely Dennis who makes a mean G&T! Lovely storm lanterns are lit in the evening which was a lovely touch and again, on all the tables there were lovely fresh flowers.Dinner in the restaurant which views over the bay was amazing. I was spoiled for choice with the dinner menu which is changed daily. All the products are sourced locally. I had pork belly with black pudding followed by a raspberry sorbet, then fillet steak and hand cut chips and to follow a delicious chocolate and black olive mousse which was amazing. We had coffee and mints in the bar area where the real fire had then been lit. It was magical.Breakfast was superb which a vast choice from fresh fruit, cereals, muesli, delicious jams and cooked options. As well as the stunning surroundings, the staff make the hotel what it is. They are all so helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We had a walk around the hotel and they were preparing the library for an intimate wedding in the library and I popped my head in and the room looked beautiful. The hotel also has some other room options including "the Turrets", which comprises of 2 bedrooms (both en-suite) ,2 lounges, one with a large dining area, a kitchen and a terrace which overlooks the bay. There is another option called the Potting shed which are small chalet style rooms, again overlooking the sands. This hotel was perfect and would suit all and is in a beautiful area close to other parts of the Lakes. Perfect, we will be back.

This was to be a Sunday afternoon treat while on a weekend away. My partner has never experienced afternoon tea. Unfortunately I don't think he will be in a hurry to do it again. We phoned to book & were assured that catering for a vegetarian wasn't a problem. We weren't asked what foods I did/didn't eat. The 3-tiered cake stand looked pretty at first glance, however the waitress was also carrying a small plate of separate sandwiches. She explained that there were egg sandwiches on the main plate however they had done me extra egg sandwiches. I informed her I don't eat egg, meat or fish to which she replied "but that's all we do". I enquired whether they did cheese & she said they did. She returned some time later with 3 small rectangular cheese sandwiches. Probably 1 slice of white bread. No choice of bread offered. Nothing with the cheese, just plain cheese. My partner on the other hand had 16 (yes we counted) similarly sized sandwiches. Various yet unimaginative fillings, there was no mustard or other dressing available or offered Onto the cakes......the scone was stale and definitely not home-made. There was a savoury scone (which was again stale) but no butter. The chocolate brownie was mint-flavoured which tasted like toothpaste. The other cakes were way past their best. All in all there is no way I would pay even £10 for this, let alone the £30 being asked. In fairness when my partner complained about being misled about catering for veggies the waitress returned to apologise and advised us we could have it for free. We did pay £20 as we had had two pots of coffee (not particularly nice coffee at that) and my partner had eaten and enjoyed all his sandwiches (even though they were boring) Very very disappointing and certainly not what we expected from such a beautiful, grand old building.

The hotel looks fabulous from the outside with its beautiful gardens and terraced. It's olde world design on the inside looks a bit tired. We stayed in room 33. I had booked in advance and asked for a quiet room. Thevroom was small and at the back of the hotel. The decoration was dated but it was clean. On the Friday evening we needed to open the Windows as it was really hot weather, only to be greeted with the small of food and cigerrette smoke. Obviously we were above a kitchen. Later it was a clanging of bottles in bins. On the Saturday night.,the same thing but the sound of a radio was coming from the kitchen skylight aswell. Eventually at around1230 we nodded off. Then woken by a clanging of bottles in the bins at around 7.30. For a room the was supposed to be quiet it was far from it. Our Windows needed to be opened because of the warm weather. There is no air conditioning in the room. 2 night's for a total of £220 for 2 people is outrageous considering the hotel is called a luxury hotel. I have stayed in better youth hostels. I did complain to a member if staff who said that i was the first person to complain about that room. I then felt like she didn't believe me. She knocked £20 off the bill and I left my number for the manager to call back.

Such a shame to be writing this review as this pub could be a classic Lake District country pub. Unfortunately the food is terrible! The chicken burger was full of what I presume was gristle but could have been bits of bone, undercooked and pink inside. Completely inedible. The lamb Henry was all fat and inedible too.
