Had a cinnamon roll and coffee business meeting on a bench during lockdown. Assistant in shop was very knowledgeable on the bakery items but they didn’t stock syrups for the coffee. A little expensive but delicious.

Sliding into a city as striking and seething as London can be, will likely trigger feelings of trepidation, excitement and exploration. A slow somnolent train ride will quickly give way to a fast walking flow through the turnstiles and down into the underworld of cramped confusion and the whisk, whisk, whisking of passengers away from the point of arrival and off to myriad pods of possibility. Finding yourself in Picadilly is to find neon belligerently pounding home the messages of corporate consumption, manufacturing demand and need where once there was none. A stone’s throw from decadent and delightful hotels, whose environs are home too to those with less comfortable accommodation and a closer relationship to the elements. Shoppers fly hither and thither, diving headlong into the great edifices to disposable fashion, knowing full well that their acquisitions will neither change their lives nor, very likely, command their loyalty beyond their next birthday; destined instead for an airing or two and a life of contemplation at the back of the cupboard. This is not to say that the experience is unpleasant or unrewarding. If you can take command of your senses and maintain a lightness of commitment, enabling you to skate lightly over the ice taking in the remarkable and the ridiculous then you will surely fill with ideas and ambitions to ponder and pursue. But for all but the most resilient, there comes a time when escape feels the most rational response. Rest easy as it can be achieved with little effort and as is often the case, London reveals its many sides when least expected and often most wanted. Wheeling away from Picadilly Circus and heading north to Golden Square led us to increasingly calm streets and eventually the inner sanctum that is the Nordic Café. When it feels like all of life is a contest, this is a place that in ways that are inexplicable provides subtle and simple sustenance capable of restoring both sinew and soul. Coffee that is strong but without bitterness restores resolve. The warmth of the cinnamon buns provides a continental backdrop to the many conversations at communal tables populated by citizens clad in natural fibres and whose outward appearances are strong and reassuring. These are a people convinced that life’s many choices seem obvious, as indeed they are when removed from the constant noise and disinformation of the now dominant interests at work around our world. Simplicity feels possible and welcome, clarity returns and life starts to feel a little less complicated. Those around us start to feel less like potential problems and more like a community of like-minded souls where solutions are possible if we all embrace that one core commitment that is care for those around us and a disregard for demonstrating our importance to others. As we gaze around this simple, sincere and intriguing place, we see a couple take a seat and in an act from a bye-gone era he slowly takes her hand and blesses it with a kiss. Civilisation, good sense and hope abound in that room of warmth and well-being.

One of my favourite cafés in London as I love all things scandinavian. The coffee is really good and so are the cinnamon buns. It can get a bit crowded but most of the time you get a table. It’s very minimal and a nice place to relax from shopping. The service is also very good, everyone is realxed and friendly here.

Still selling stale cinnamon buns or more aptly named rock cakes. Such a shame as these are the best on a good day but it’s 50/50 whether you get a good day. If only quality could be maintained, but they just never seem able to. Staff insulting customers intelligence but saying they are fresh really doesn’t help, couldn’t even cut with a knife - inedible.

Nicely located opposite a square (park), which makes it hard to decide wether to sit inside the cafe or grab your goodies to go. We decided to sit in the park, but the interior of the cafe is really appealing, minimalistic and cozy. Bit noisy but we’re swedes and used to a different type of atmosphere. Great sandwiches (this swede loves rye bread), really impressed with the coffee (Swedish coffee is STRONG, and coffee in London has been a disappointment so far, until now, this was rather nice actually) and an OK (but big) cinnamon bun (needed more cinnamon and cardamom). I will surely return during my next London-visit!

I used to love this place, but haven't been for nearly 10 years. I'm glad to see it hasn't changed too much, but with the downside that it is now apparently owned by BrewDog. Luckily, it appears they let them continue without having to follow the "taproom by numbers" you get out of most BrewDog bars, so not only does it have it's own look, but there is a much more interesting selection of beers. It was easy enough to get a seat on a Saturday afternoon, which is always a bonus in a decent location like this.

Fui a desayunar. Mucho a mucho. Este lugar no es para mi. Buen café sin embargo.
