Fantastic food, went for Sunday dinner, it was absolutely delicious hats off to the chef, the staff were also really friendly and nice, will definitely going back soon.

Had a booking for 8pm for 4...meeting long lost friends...arrived to find it closed..sat 21st june...no note on door..tried to fone..then they changed their number...if they had a problem they could have advised us..or at least given an explanation by fone or on door...never will i go there again...took us 1 and a half hours on a saturday night to find somewhere for us and for our friends.edit..in answer to your response i 'm very sorry about your chef but i spoke to young lady twice to confirm booking however these things happen and hope your chef will be ok...yes we got a booking at heaneys for 9.30pm...im not going to argue...im hardly going to make it up am i...i will remove my review as an act of good faith

Just a quick note to say that No. 5 is a really great addition to the Pontcanna food scene, offering something a little different - more low key, but with a focus on great quality dishes. Went for dinner a few weeks back (there's a lovely intimate atmosphere) and just had breakfast there this morning, and it really is very good. I'm looking forward to doing a better review with pictures for our next visit. Update 28 April 2024 We decided to try No. 5 Pontcanna for Sunday lunch and, having tried and tested and accumulated a fair few favourites in and around Cardiff, I've got to say this didn't disappoint. On the contrary everything about the experience was spot on. Kudos to the staff, who were pleasant, receptive and quick to please. The kitchen too, were on-point. Good ingredients and really great flavours. And there was a really great atmosphere. A perfect Sunday afternoon lunch.

Dined on Wednesday last week. All the food was amazing (Burgers and Steaks) side vegetable were excellent and onion rings best I’ve ever tasted. Service was brilliant. Thoroughly recommend.

Exceptional in every way; the Sunday lunch which was sheer indulgence was as decadent as the welcome was warm and sincere. A small honest restaurant which delivers with passion and care and puts many a larger, national operation to shame. These guys and gals deserve all the plaudits and success that will inevitable come their way. My go to place for Sunday roast from now on

We would give this restaurant 6 stars if we could!! We had excellent meals here and were treated really well. The customer service was excellent and my partner has to follow a gluten free and vegetarian diet and we were very impressed when the chef came to the table to discuss suitable options. It was Sunday lunch time, and I had the lamb Sunday roast with king prawns for starters. We both loved our meals and have recommended this restaurant to our friends and family. The one thing that we didn't like was that a service charge was automatically added to our bill. We would have left a tip anyway but don't like it being presumed that we will do so. We would also have decided the amount for ourselves.

A great sirloin steak, full of flavour and excellently cooked medium rare. Home made chips were really good with a great taste. Broccoli and beans as a side were cooked really well. Best steak in a very long while. My wife reported the peppercorn sauce to be top notch also. House Malbec was very good, house Merlot was a nice drop also. Broccoli soup and calamari for starters were also extremely good. The saffron in the mayonnaise with the calamari was a nice addition. Good service. Hope the business does well.

Really lovely. Beautifully cooked steak and starters (mushroom arancini and lamb bonbons) were great. Will go back. Interested to try Sunday lunch and brunch on this showing.

Excellent Christmas meal. Food delicious and service was excellent.

Myself and the wife walked in, unbooked, but were made most welcome. The service was excellent and my steak was possibly the best one I have ever had. The wife ordered Salmon, which She said was also delicious, so all in all 5 stars. One minor criticism, there were 9 desserts on the menu, you should never offer an indecisive woman 9 desserts lol!

Excellent experience, starter's were just enough. Mains pork/ lamb and beef cooked just right. Was offered dessert, but could not fit it in. Wine list comprehensive and well suited to food. Yes, I did enjoy the experience, and I would come.

Really great. Menu is small and simple, a number of steak cuts, with a vegan and fish option too. Went for the fillet mignon with chimichurri and parmesan chips. Side of honey roasted garlic carrots. Food was really lovely. Presented nicely without being pretentious. Service was really good and the atmosphere is really nice. The restaurant is nicely presented, looks very smart. This is a really welcome addition to the area.

Had a lovely 3 course Sunday roast today , Welcome was very friendly Service quick ,polite , attentive , food excellent 👍 plenty of it ,nothing to much trouble for anyone very enjoyable afternoon with daughter and son in law Give it a try they will not disappoint you It's in what was the old Bullys restaurant

Brilliant restaurant with fantastic steak and delicious wine. Would recommend the T-Bone to share with 3-4 sides. Staff were lovely too. Will be returning soon.

The food was good but not good enough to reflect the price. Service was generally poor, we were made to feel like an inconvenience for being there.

Overall good, but maybe avoid the Sunday roast This is my third time going - usually I've had exceptional food at every point but the Sunday roast to me just felt like a Sunday roast. An especially lazy part was what seemed to be simply boiled/steamed rather bland veg. Usually the food is great, adventurous and you can taste the goodness in every element. But the Sunday lunch really felt like a Sunday pub lunch that you can get for around £20/£25pp - not the £40 a head we ended up paying. Highlights I've had include the duck salad, the pork served 3 ways, the tarts they do are always exceptional!

We have visited several times previously on a Sunday for a roast dinner, most recently just before Christmas, and have always been very impressed. However, unfortunately on this occasion, we were left very disappointed. Service was very slow and the portion sizes compared to the cost of meal (and all of our previous visits) was very poor, and the food was not cooked well (for example, cold scallop, raw Yorkshire pudding, etc). The roast dinner came with one small slice of beef and a very small amount of vegetables, which seemed poor value for money based on the cost of the meal. Bully’s seem to have tried to cut costs but have compromised quality, which is a real shame. We sadly will not be returning after this visit.

I had the ox cheek starter, pigeon for main and the bread pudding dessert. Unfortunately I cannot agree with most of the reviews here, the food was good, but not for the price expected from us. The pigeon required more flavour from its accompaniments, you cannot pair a gamey bird meat with bland vegetables or it will just not work. The oxcheek flavour profile appeared to come entirely from the sauce, however it did have flavour unlike my main. The bread pudding was disappointing, I don't pay over the odds for a bit of cake and some custard on top. Seriously, who thought that was an acceptable presentation of the food? My partner had the sea bass which wasn't really anything to shout about, why are you serving boiled potatoes with fish when I'm paying so much for it? Again it really did not pass muster and probably would have been an acceptable gastro pub dinner. The restaurant is well presented and the staff were friendly, attentive and helpful.

Exceptional quality food with a small seasonal menu. Meat and fish dishes were beautifully cooked as were the vegetables. There was also a vegetarian choice. Desserts were delicious and the presentation and detail made this a a really special meal. Excellent wine list and great service. Will definitely return.

Great restaurant, friendly staff and tasty food. What a shame the bill was so high..

Service was awful. Started out with a rude hostess. Sat for almost 15 minutes before the waitress even came to our table. I wouldn't have minded if the place was packed, but it wasn't. She didn't greet us and just said "are you ready to order" so we had to order drinks, appetizer, and entrée at the same time. My wife asked if she wanted all three orders to clarify and the waitress rolled her eyes and said yes like that should've been obvious. They brought the appetizer and drinks out and our entrées came only a few minutes later. The chicken on my KFC sandwich was rubbery and almost had the consistency of jerky. I opted for tater tots instead of fries and they seemed like they had been prepared earlier then redipped in the fryer to reheat them before serving. They left a puddle of grease on the plate and crumbled when you stuck them with a fork which made them effectively inedible. My wife's stomach started hurting after eating her curry and she didn't finish it. She doesn't have any food allergies/sensitivities so not sure what happened. The only redeeming aspect was the pickle pizza appetizer which we didn't really have time to enjoy due to the short gap between our app and entrées being brought out. When it came time to pay, we once again sat and waited for the waitress to come to our table. Took a bit over 20 mins after we had finished eating. She took my card and left it at the pay station without anyone there for at least five minutes. I was luckily able to watch it from our table, but this shouldn't happen. Overall, very disappointed. Probably won't come back and won't recommend to anyone else. I'd give one star if it weren't for the pickle pizza app and sort of cool atmosphere.

Had a great dinner here. Smaller but well considered menu, delivered really pleasantly. Ideal for small groups of friends and family wanting an intimate dining experience. Staff are super polite and patient. Complimentary butternut squash soup was awesome. Would definitely recommend trying this place out.

Nice local Pontcanna restaurant, with interesting menu. Stand outs were pidgeon (served very rare) and poussin dishes and a gruyure and bacon mash. Do a good corkage deal (need to ask in advance). Not cheap, but a good place to go for a celebratory meal.

A delightful restaurant, away from the centre, but not too far. Food is superb. You can tell they enjoy their craft. Staff were friendly and the service perfect.

Vegans are an after though… will go back when they actually add vegan food to the menu…

Totally unimposing from the outside, a hidden gem. Those who know how to appreciate good food will enjoy Bullys.

Five of us went last night 2/4 the food was incredible the service impeccable and the surrounding great. I had the steak tartare which was beautifully prepared and had a freshness’s that You only get in a high end restaurant. The lamb main melted in the mouth and the flavours were lush. Dessert was icing on the cake - can’t wait to try their new spring menu

A great little place in Cardiff. The staff were very attentive, and the food was delicious, my husband who always has fish when we go out branded his fish main as the best cook bit of fish he has ever had at a restaurant. The chocolate dessert was rich and balanced out well with the really salty caramel sauce. Would definitely return

I am really not sure why it has taken me so long to try this amazing restaurant, but now I am angry with myself for waiting so long. A true sublime dining experience. My recommendation is to allow the knowledgable staff to choose the wine for each course, which can be served in half bottle carafes if required.

Had the New Year's tasting menu and was divine .. food was world class and enjoyed every dish.. venue was quirky with a very relaxing atmosphere..

Very friendly staff. Good atmosphere. Food was ok, but over very priced. Looking at the menu and the high value ingredients you would assume great flavour, but the dishes lacked depth and dimension. A saving grace was the amuse bouche which was warmly spiced and a real treat. But nice place mats.

Absolutely amazing place to eat, it should be your 1st choice for any special occasion. Russell the owner, is more like a host welcoming you to his home than his place of business. He will guide you through the menu with his exceptional wit and knowledge. If you need to order wine then you are in his safe hands. The food is amazing and the decor truly eclectic. A proper treat.

I absolutely loved this restaurant. It almost felt like I'd stepped out of Wales and onto the continent. This place has been put together meticulously and with much love and passion. The ambience is just right for a relaxed and very comfortable dining experience. The staff were very attentive... just turn around and someone is there to help with your request or question. Food too was very tasty and well presented. I may try and find an excuse to come back to Cardiff just to come here for again 😅

Food was decent but watch your bill.. I paid £40 for a bottle of SAV blanc an when one of the staff topped me up... He put less than a glass in my wine and charged me full price, a bit naughty when you walk over to top up a glass. ******** Edit. No you grabbed the same bottle from behind the bar after the place had closed and topped up my wine. Every impression was that it was complimentary until I seen you added it to the bill.. Standard practice is that if you do not ask for it then it is not charged to you... Many restaurants do it with free shots etc.

Having read so many great reviews of Bullys I'm pleased to say it didn't disappoint. It has a really nice atmosphere, attentive and friendly service and delicious food. I had fish based courses, the husband meat based and it was all beautifully presented and tasted delicious. Good value for money for quality too. Would definitely go back next time I'm in Cardiff

It was so good to eventually get to Bullys. We originally booked for Christmas 2020 but were delayed by the second lockdown. Todays lunch was the first time for us as a family to eat together in a resturant since all this lockdown nonsense started and we couldnt think of a better place to have visited. Lovely food, great wines and great staff. Looking forward to visiting again soon.

Always a pleasure dining at Bully’s - the team are great and food is fantastic!

Nice meal, but seriously overpriced. I had the crab and salmon starter and my wife had the scallops. My starter was so small that I could have eaten it in one mouthful (no exaggeration). This was nouvelle cuisine at its smallest! It tasted nice, but I didn't have enough to really tell. The scallops were beautifully cooked, but they had more than a touch of Thai flavour, which overwhelmed them. My wife had the fillet steak and I had the lamb chops. The steak was superb, but the lamb was undercooked. I love it pink, but this was bright red and, therefore, it was chewy and the fat was not rendered enough. Desserts were excellent. A chocolate mousse and a tonka bean panna cotta. We also had a bottle of Prosecco. The bill came to £144, which was about £50 too much for what we had. I would have expected a big thank you when we left, but that didn't come! Clearly, they have become too used to people paying too much for their dinner!!! We will not be returning.

I have visited Bullys at least several times a year for special occasions birthdays anniversaries et cetera. Whenever friends come to visit from away I immediately book a table, they are so accommodating and really friendly. They have an amazing selection of wine and the food is exceptional, it is wonderful, there is no way I can describe it as anything other than delectable. The recent modifications to the actual restaurant are so beautiful and in keeping with the original vibe, a kind of boho vintage glam which I love. Seating is now much more comfortable than it had been before and I really just love the colours in the restaurant which make me feel quite chilled out. It’s really perfect for date night’s and special occasions and you can also eat fantastic lunch there. Panfried Foie Gras is stunning. This is one of the few places that you can get this in South Wales. 👌🏼😍

A great menu and fantastic tasting food.

Local and lovely. We spoke for a long time with the owner who was clearly passionate about in season, local and high quality produce and it showed. The food was stunning.

Wonderful, wonderful lunch from their mix and match menu, £12 for 3 dishes and a glass of something lovely. The pork belly in particular was perfectly cooked, tender and not overly fatty. Service wonderful, ingredients fresh, pannacota to die for. Can't wait to go back!!

Hearty Sunday Roast :) Beef perfectly cooked

Good traditional home cooked feel, taste, ambiance. After walking all day we were quick to eat rather than take photos of our tasty meals! The desserts were incredible too. We had the lamb, duck, rice pudding, a valrhona dessert, and an apple pastry.

Great ambiance and amazing staff and great wine selection, but the food just wasnt for me. The salmon was raw (which wasnt stated on the menu) and the lamb was way under cooked for me but some people like it like that. I would recommend if that's the kind of food you like
