We had a lovely 4 night stay in this boutique accommodation. Its very easy to recommend! The furnishings and bathroom facilities are top class, and the standard of room servicing, never slipped. Really impressive. Cooked breakfasts were delicious and everything well organised. The evening menu we used once and were very pleased. Staff were friendly, and the owner went above and beyond the call of duty to make our stay truly memorable! A wonderful stay in Gatehouse!

Called in twice for a light lunch whilst staying in the area. Both visits were most enjoyable. The place is spotlessly clean with very modern decor. Good selection of food on the menu with very pleasant staff. On first visit the fish goujons and the chicken paninis were great. On the second visit we had the soup & paninis which again were very tasty and for about £10 or so just amazing value. It was a cool day and we sat near the blazing wood burner, so a great atmosphere for us . The place is also very dog friendly. Beer was a bit pricey but excellent quality. If you're in Gatehouse area then this place is a must, to visit.

This was our second trip back to the ship inn, Gatehouse of Fleet having stayed in this area once before. As before, it did not disappoint! Xav and the team go out of their way to make you welcome and to ensure that you have a fantastic stay. The food is wonderful and absolutely demonstrates Xav's award winning talents. This time we were here to celebrate a friend's birthday and every single detail was perfect. Thank you to the whole team, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be planning our next visit.

Beautiful restaurant with a fabulous ambience. The restaurant is laid out nicely with plenty of space between tables which allows for privacy at the meal. Staff are caring, attentive and helpful . Presentation of the food is lovely and quality is excellent. The varied menu is well designed to suit most tastes . We were not in any way hurried to give back our table which made for a lovely relaxed dining experience. All in all this restaurant deserves the highest possible acclaim.

This was quite a good works night out. My colleagues agreed that their food was generally a bit underwhelming but one or two of them enjoyed their meals. I felt that my meal was extremely poor value for money. Smoked salmon starter which was a dish of lettuce with a couple of pieces of salmon on top might be forgiven for a starter but the main was ridiculous. This comprised a half a plate of potatoes with undercooked green beans and a microscopic amount of grey mullet. The sauce tasted OK but this is absolutely not fine dining and I did not expect a child's portion. For the price a total joke.

We went to No 1 Fleet Street @ The Ship Inn for my Girlfriends Birthday. We were greeted immediately with a smile and a warm welcome by Martin , who showed us to our table. The restaurant was well kept and clean. The menu had a good range of food on offer with Vegan , Gluten Free and Vegetarian options available. We chose the Rump of Lamb with vegetables and mashed potatoes and the Steak Pie with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The food was delicious and well presented. Martin was attentive but not overbearing. The whole evening was extremely enjoyable and we would highly recommend this venue to anyone visiting Gatehouse of Fleet or in the vicinity.

We had high expectations for this place given it had won best eatery in the village in recent times. We found the atmosphere to be anything but relaxing- bright lights and loud dance music playing throughout. The service was very good, however ,the food not so. A very small bit of sea bass for £20.50 with equally small accompaniments, tasted ok but it didn’t satisfy hunger pangs. The duck at £23.50 was, again,a small portion and not particularly well cooked with a decent part of it being too tough to eat. A disappointing experience I’m afraid to say.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

My family (3 adults, 2 small dogs on this occasion) went to The Ship for a drink, and maybe something to eat, in their beer garden today. The Ship has good reviews, so we were looking forward to it. My daughter is in a wheelchair, and although the hill down into the beer garden was steep, we managed it okay (she wouldn't have been able to wheel herself, too steep). The beer garden itself is lovely. It's across the road from The Ship, but it beautiful, peaceful and picturesque, right next to the river and bridge, with views of the old church on the other side. There were a good amount of picnic tables. I do understand why establishments have picnic tables - they seat a good number of people, they are hard to move so unlikely to be stolen, and they are weather proof. Unfortunately they are not wheelchair friendly, as there is no gap to get the wheelchair up close to the table, so my daughter always has to sit side on at the end, which isnt especially comfortable. My husband, who uses a crutch due to a spinal injury, went across the road to order some drinks, and collect some menus so we could decide what to order. In the first instance he wanted to order my daughter a bar snack as she gets low blood sugar, but the only bar snack available to buy were Seabrooks Prawn Cocktail crisps, which she cant have. Once he'd ordered our drinks, he was just left to it, he even had to ask for a tray, and then tackle crossing a road and going down a hill whilst using a crutch and carrying a tray of 3 drinks in one hand. I was very shocked. It put us off ordering food completely - there was no way he could carry food for 3 people. Also a bit off putting was the fact the drinks were sticking to the tray, it clearly needed a good wipe. The drinks were nice, and the setting was lovely, but the service left a little bit to be desired.

My wife and I dined here on a busy Saturday evening. The place was buzzing as there was an event on in the garden to which we went to after our meal. I have to say that the menu was both surprising and generally very good. The menu is varied and imaginative with something for most palates. I personally chose the pan-fried scallops with black pudding and minted peas. Not a combination i would immediately put together but it worked well. The scallops were perfectly cooked and presented very attractively. For my main course i chose the loin of venison with red wine, haggis and mushrooms. The portion size was excellent and again the meat was perfectly cooked, nicely presented and delicious. for a third course i chose the cheese platter which was served with a chutney, fruits and a selection of biscuits. Sadly for me though the cheeses although said to be locally sourced did not have the variety i would've liked. There was a slice of Caboc and three other cheddar like cheeses with various "bits" added to them such as mustard, dried herbs etc. I admit that i am a bit of a purist when it comes to cheese but a Lanark Blue or another soft cheese would have worked well here. The others in our group chose for starters king Prawns, the selection of Smoked Salmon and Prawns. Both were very tasty and enjoyed by all. For the main course the Maple Glazed Pork Belly and Breast of duck were chosen. Again these were very well cooked and presented nicely. For desserts a Banoffee Pie and Raspberry Tower were also enjoyed. The service throughout the meal was very attentive and efficient. The whole meal for four of us including 1 non acholic beer, 1 glass of white wine, a glass of Port and a bottle of Rioja came to £216. There was no service charge and so i thought this was very good value. For me I thoroughly enjoyed the meal although there were just two disappointments. The selection of non alcoholic beers was non existent. Just a Peroni or nothing else and the selection of cheeses as mentioned. Having said that i wouldn't hesitate to go back, especially for the venison. Sadly I didn't take any photos but the food itself is very memorable.

When we arrived we had mentioned that we'd need to move our cars to a shaded area as our dogs were in the cars, the staff said just bring them in and they were very welcoming of our 2 dogs , bringing a bowl of water for them. We stayed at the Ship last week. Service great (although initially no towels in the room), restaurant was very good, wine list acceptable, service very friendly, all good. All good so far… At 3.00 am the fire alarm went off. The dozen or so guests duly left the building and assembled outside. No staff appeared. No fire crew. Eventually a guest called a night number (having gone back into the hotel to find a number!). A member of staff then appeared from further down the street and called the fire brigade. I felt that this could have turned into a serious situation had there bern a real fire. Surely the fire alarm at a commercial hotel should automatically call a member of staff and also the fire brigade. I strongly suggest it is addressed before a tragedy occurs.

Pork belly so tasty and very well chosen trimmings, chocolate brownie sundae I probably shouldn’t have had… my wife had excellent cod and chips and a home-made pistachio ice cream that she loved. We tried to book for Friday night, but it was full, so we opted to order the take away pizzas instead - with a bottle of Malbec too. Had an early one course dinner here. It was warm, conformable and welcoming with unhurried but efficient service. The main course was well cooked and tasty and reasonably priced. Will definitely go again.

Our first “real” meal out since lockdown, and what a treat! Sunday lunch, roast beef, so often a disappointment here was a delight. The scallop and black pudding starter, and key lime pie (very pleasantly looking “individual” not a slice) were both delicious. Excellent service, airy bright dining room and good value too. Thank you.

Amazing customer service. I can't speak for the hotel itself, however I couldn't make the original date booked, so the hotel went out of their way to contact me themselves when I was waiting to hear from Hotels.com, and were so accommodating. Very impressed with this level of communication and friendliness 👏

Being a dog owner we regularly use Google reviews to check if dogs are allowed in, especially when we are visiting an area for the first time. We therefore checked The Riverbank out and saw, in the Gemini generated summary as well as several reviews ( one 2 months ago) that it was dog friendly. On turning up earlier today we noted a 'no dogs' sign on the door so I popped upstairs to check....and apparently the answer is 'it depends!', ie whether busy, how they feel on the day. This is completely unhelpful to customers as it either is, or isn't and should be up front about this. If you let dogs in it will appear in your reviews! Anyway your loss and another cafes gain as there are other lovely dog friendly places in the town (Lime Bothy, Belted Galloway) so I'd suggest you take your business elsewhere if you have a dog.

As it’s a small popular place booking in advance is probably recommended. We were looking for a table on a Saturday night during the Spring Fling event in the region so left a message with the restaurant whilst traveling to Kirkcudbright. The owner returned the call and fortunately, thanks to a cancellation, was able to arrange our reservation for dinner the following night - a promising start. On the evening of our visit the bistro was busy however there was still a relaxed ambiance about the place. The sole waitress taking orders and attending to the tables was pleasant and seemed knowledgeable about the menu and the only other member of staff appeared to be the owner/chef. He popped out and chatted with us towards the end of service to allow the waitress to get home as a few diners like us were finishing off drinks and still to receive their desserts and settle their bills. He seemed sociable and relaxed and clearly hadn’t adopted the Gordon Ramsay approach to the restaurant business. Being a small place we were not surprised at the outset that the menu was limited to about half a dozen items per course including specials however it gave a decent choice in our view. We both ordered a “special” for starters - Tempura Battered Prawns (£7.95). As was the case throughout the evening, the dish was served up to the table in good time. Six king prawns each with a sweet chilli sauce with a salad garnish and balsamic. It was a tasty start. For mains my wife ordered the Seabass, served with king prawns, a white wine & tomato sauce and fresh vegetables (£21.00). I had Duck a L’Orange (£21.95) which was another item from the specials board. Neither of the mains dishes would be winning prizes for presentation however most importantly they both tasted good. The fish was nicely cooked and my wife enjoyed the other parts of the dish. The duck was also good albeit the chef was later surprised I’d left the fat on the plate. I queried if people normally ate the fat and he commented that they often do and that he rendered it to make it more appealing. Thankfully this was not an overly fatty duck breast in any case but I was quite happy to leave the small amount I did on the plate. For dessert my wife had Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream and I had a Citrus Tart served with a small selection of fresh berries and cream. The puddings were £6.50 each and both enjoyable. Overall we liked our experience at the bistro and with our three course meal for two costing just under £72 we thought it was reasonable value for money. We had added a bottle of NZ Yealands Sauvignon Blanc wine for £25 only just keeping the bill under £100. A walk to the harbour to watch the sunset as we headed back to our accommodation rounded off the evening well.

Really beautiful hotel. The Torr kindly hosted a funeral tea for our family and were so welcoming. The food was lovely (especially the sausage rolls!), and the service was excellent.
