My absolute favourite Italian restaurant. Me and my sister always talk about it as we go by. The best dough balls we have ever eaten!

Had a lovely meal with a friend here tonight - thanks for delicious mains, desserts and wine- we will be back!

We booked for a party of 12 at the end of October, having visited several times in the past, and were not disappointed - we had pre-ordered several different choices of starters and mains and these were served quickly and efficiently (apart from one which was soon rectified), and everyone enjoyed their meals. We hope to return, before too long.

I have eaten at many good Italian restaurants in England and in Europe. And Nicos is not one of those food is not of a standard you accept from an Italian restaurant the drinks are very expensive. They decor inside and out really needs updating and picking up on a review made early the toilets are not a nice place Sorry will not be visiting this restaurant again just might have been a bad day

Went to Nico’s yesterday evening with my girlfriend. The atmosphere was nice but we weren’t impressed by the food. The garlic bread wasn’t really tasting of garlic and wasn’t toasted enough. My girlfriend had the Nico’s chicken with tagliatelle and she was happy with it. I had the chicken with chilli and garlic sauce but you could hardly taste the chilli or garlic. We then had tiramisu and toffee cheesecake. The cheesecake base was super soft and very salty. We didn’t eat it. The tiramisu was watery and tasteless. The Chef came to see us and asked if everything was alright. We explained the above and he said he will take on board all our comments as he wants to improve. He told us his mother was on holiday and she is the chef, he was covering. He offered to not put the desserts on the bill which we appreciated but we insisted to pay for one. We think we would give them another chance.

Excellent food great service only criticism state of toilets but definitely will be coming back,lovely main course of beef stroganoff which my sister had as well which was rich in flavour,my wife had the Kiev calzone which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Went here tonight , 8 of us for my birthday . Really disappointed . My bushetta was fridge cold , obviously made prior to serving , my fahitas were so sad , chicken obviously cooked earlier then topped off wth tomatoe sauce etc . None of my party said there meal was good , spaghetti was small portions as was everything else . But I have to say I couldn't eat mine anyway though the waitress didn't ask why . One of our party was gluten free and her meal was was served to someone else and I had to ask where the gluten free meal was. The staff were indeifferent and if the female on duty had raised her eyes once more I would have to had said something . Only average food , no atmosphere , not one person there wanting you to enjoy the meal . So so so fed with this experience let alone the cost . I would recommend on my experience just don't go there I wish we had not .

Really looking forward to eating here as I had heard a lot of good things about it and I had booked a table for Saturday evening, only to turn up and the place to be closed with a small sign on the window to say it was closed for the evening. Even though my contact details were left no one had made contact to inform me of the closure, leaving us with no where to go with it being such a peak time and such short notice. Very disappointed.

All i can say to anyone booking this restaurant always have a plan b of another restaurant because Nico's is renound for cancelling table reservations at short notice.Begining of september I booked a table for four people and i gave week's notice and then 2 hours before we were due to be seated a voicemail was left to say die to unforseen circumstances we have to cancel your reservation for this evening and i tried to call the restrant back and the phone was just continous ringing.thankfully at short notice for we went to another restaurant ,this booking at Nicos was for a midweek so to this day not sure why the cancellation but we passed there on the way to the other restaurant and it was barely full at the time we would have been sat, so just be warned and we will not be booking with them again

Really good food, excellent service and reasonable prices. For parking use Vernon Street, just over the road and free after 6pm.

Came in tonight with family for our first visit and were so happy with everything. Had three courses and every one was amazing, and as a vegetarian i had so many options to choose from! Amazing service from Jenny and will definitely be back soon, loved it.

Nico's is a lovely little restaurant, with a really nice atmosphere that offers great value food that is also very good quality. The restaurant itself is small, maybe 7 or 8 tables, so it might be a good idea to book in advance for a larger group at the weekend. The food is mainly Italian (pizza and pasta) with a few mexican dishes on the menu. I would definitely recommend the calzone with extra Bolognese sauce. I was also impressed that they swapped out mushrooms for artichokes on my wife's pizza.

We visited Nicos in April 2019 on a Saturday night and had a fantastic meal with excellent service . We will definitely return !

Had tried to go a couple of times but had been fully booked, went this evening when they first opened and a table was free.. food was fabulous, service was great and very friendly and the price reasonable.. will for sure be back. Thank you

My latest visit was probably the best that I've experienced over the years, but thats not to say previous visits were bad, they too were great.

Found Nicos on meerkat meals, what a find excellent meals and great value, topped off a great family day out.

We went to Nicos to celebrate my brother in laws birthday. We had a fabulous evening- the food is absolutely delicious . Brilliant, friendly service- excellent value. Great menu. We really enjoyed our evening. Would recommend a visit to Nico's.

Had a lovely meal with great service in Nico’s on Saturday evening (05/01/19). I had Dough Balls for starter, Penne Pasta and Meat Balls (main), and Caramel Cheesecake...plus several rounds of beers! There were 5 of us, all food was tasty and came out at the same time. The service was polite and nothing was too much trouble! Thanks for a great night!

A cold and wet evening and needed somewhere to eat so phoned up last minute and managed to get a table. Menu here does not change so you know what you are getting, we have our favourites, just very good home cooked food at a decent price with excellent service.

This was the venue for our Christmas meal. Antipasti starter, chicken parmigiana main, tiramisu dessert. Highlight was the tiramisu, very light, boozy, delicious. It's not the biggest of places, so probably good for a romantic meal. Friendly, attentive staff. The only minor disappointment was they didn't have Nero D'Avola on the wine list, my favourite Italian wine, hopefully by mentioning it on here, they'll add one, lol! Definitely you should go here.

Booked a table for 5 people as I’ve been here quite a few times over the years and wanted to take the other half and the in-laws to show them how nice it is here. Unfortunately had an email to say our table had been cancelled, only a few hours before we were meant to turn up. Rang up and I was told our booking was cancelled due to being closed indefinitely due to lack of staff and other issues which they didn’t know when would be resolved. Luckily we managed to rearrange and find somewhere else to eat on short notice. Happened to drive past Nicos to get to the other booking and we were shocked to see it open and busy. Possibly cancelled our table due to a larger party booking. Disappointed in the service and will not be eating here again.

After reading reviews on TripAdvisor we decided to try nicos out.

First visit prompted by good reviews. Dont go by car, parking is nigh impossible. The welcome was friendly. They didn't have my first choice of drink as "they hadn't been shopping". Food was very tasty, no complaints there.Ordered a coffee to finish. Sorry no milk "they hadn't been shopping". The Chef I believe went out to get some milk but it was to late, our taxi had arrived. Its a shame, the lack of a brand of beer is acceptable but no milk, that certainly isn't acceptable.

Lovely, family run restaurant (mum made the tiramisu and brother is one of the chefs. Great food, genuinely nice people- not the most glam place but just good food.

What brilliant little restaurant - great food, friendly staff. Went with our children and their partners for a celebratory meal. Having eaten in two national name "brand" Italian restaurants lately, this was ten times better food and ambience and half the price. We will go again soon, and often

Delicious Italian food. We enjoyed the entire evening, from the tasty starters (Nachos, quesadillas and dough balls) to delicious mains (Kiev pizza, lasagne). All freshly made. Fabulous service too. A very enjoyable evening.

Found this place by accident but what a stunning little place it is. Food is excellent and the staff are really friendly. It is a very small restaurant mind you so I would recommend booking to make sure you get a table it is well worth the effort.

We recently tried this restaurant out for our wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. It has a rustic feel and a laid back and friendly atmosphere but don’t be fooled, the quality of the food is top notch. It’s a real gem of a place and we will be regulars from now on.

We’d been looking forward to our visit to Nico’s for a while and we certainly weren’t disappointed. It’s a gem for Derby with fantastic fresh well cooked food. I had food envy as one of our group had the steak, it was delicious beautifully cooked. When my meal was brought out though I was more than pleased, the salmon in a spicy cream sauce tantalised my taste buds. Our starters and mains were super tasty and finishing off with the strawberry and white chocolate dessert was divine. The staff are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble, you are made to feel so welcome. Lovely gesture at the end with the raspberry vodka and toffee vodka. You definitely left us wanting more. I’d been to a top rated restaurant in Nottingham a couple of weeks ago and was very disappointed with the food,service and atmosphere of the place. Nico’s by far exceeds and we all agreed we’d be returning to enjoy another culinary delight from a 5 star restaurant.

My husband and I went last night to celebrate six months of marriage, the food was amazing, all fresh and delicious, and generous portions. The service was flawless from a very friendly lady who really added to the whole night. Extremely good value for money and will definitely be going back soon with friends

Such a lovely restaurant for a cosy intimate meal with a really friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The food was super tasty and there were plenty of vegan options which was a pleasant surprise! Great service and good value. Would definitely eat here again and recommend to others. Thanks for the home made lemon and raspberry vodkas! They were delicious!

Went to this restaurant with family in the city as they had booked it for this evening. Despite our booking being for 6, we were allowed to go to our table early, which was a plus over standing and waiting. The service was really attentive, without being pushy, and they saw to everything that we asked. The food was absolutely outstanding, from the starter to the dessert. It was a really amazing experience and I feel that is entirely down to this being a family owned and run restaurant. I cannot recommend them enough, the meal was worth every penny.

My daughter and I ate here for the third time tonight and really enjoyed our meal. On each of the two occasions previously I had had the same, the vegetarian anitpasti and penne puttanesca which is delicious but tonight I tried the vegetarian pizza which was also delicious with lots of fresh vegetables and the topping, whilst not really spicy, had a definite piquancy to it which really added to it. The base was my type of base, not too thin and crispy and not too dense. The dessert selection is small but my daughter really enjoyed the tiramisu and I had mango sorbet which was lovely. The staff were friendly and it was altogether a great meal. We will be back.

A lovely, quaint little restaurant that’s perfect for date night. Service was friendly and quick, portion size was great for the price and the food itself was great. Also don’t miss the chocolate brownie with an orange tasting surprise in the middle!

Yet another great meal in Nico's, phoned up at the last minute and they managed to get us in. We are creatures of habit when eating here, the food is excellent in every way, taste, portion size and value with excellent service as usual.

Fantastic experience at this restaurant last night, the food was lovely and the waitress friendly and attentive. Far superior to some experiences at main chain restaurants. Excellent value for money. We will certainly be returning with our family. Was looking for an Italian to take my husband to and took a chance on Nicos, so pleased I did.

This restaurant was fantastic. We booked after we were let down by another restaurant. We were allowed to go early to decorate the table for my Dad's 70th. They explained before hand that if we wanted anything special making that we could request it and they would gladly do it. The meal was fantastic, wine fantastic and the staff were brilliant. Even gave us free homemade shots. The most important thing was that my Dad had an excellent evening and they made this happen. Will definitely go again.....

Friendly staff with a smile. Food cooked freshly and catered well for our party of 12. Generous portions and lovely deserts. Considerate regards individual likes and dislikes/allergies etc. Room could have been a little warmer but on the whole we enjoyed our gathering in a small and friendly atmosphere .

The restaurant was cold. The 2 pizza's were nearly burnt, my meal of Beef ragu at £13 was tasteless even with 2 lots of cheese added on top. Service consisted of just one member of staff, nice young girl but no time to be attentive.

We went to Nico’s last weekend and we loved it. It is nice, small and quiet. Tables have lovely decoration , the atmosphere is great and the food fresh and delicious. You need to try the cakes :) it is not so expensive as well , we all had drinks , starters to share, 2 desserts and paid about 70£ for everything. Very nice and friendly service as well .

I was heading into the centre when 'the best steak' on the board outside attracted my attention.

Without booking anywhere to eat on a business at the weekend I am so glad I googled this place. Yes 1 - the feel of the place and service was fantastic, very attentive. Yes 2 - the food was quite simply amazing. 5 off us 1 steak, 1 chicken fajita, 2 pizzas and a pasta. Every dish was cleaned up with the moans of delight at the food. Yes the best steak ever was a comment from another. Yes 3 - after paying the bill we left a 25% tip as this was simply amazing. This was followed by free homemade fruit vodkas. WE WILL BE BACK :-)

We visited a couple of weeks ago as a Family having per booked. Parking was on the street local, th s was not an issue. The food was not to our liking, portions were small for us. However, the ambiance was nice, as was the welcome. The lady behind the counter said that they have a regular clientele who like what they offer; it is not for us.

My wife and I made a last-minute decision to visit Nico's for a midweek "treat" and arrived to find the restaurant pleasantly busy but fortunately with enough space for us (I would recommend booking). it had been over a year since our last visit and the menu had been updated to include some new dishes.. However, some things had thankfully stayed the same: this included the very friendly and informal service and the quality of the food. We both enjoyed the superb medallion of beef (a fillet steak stuffed with cheese and covered with a jalapeno sauce). A black currant sorbet and an excellent tiramasu rounded off a perfect meal. Surely this must be the best place in Derby for a steak?

The food was just fantastic so were the staff. Really resonable price. I will definitely be going again in fact I have booked for next Saturday.

Decided to give this place a try after passing it by numerous times. Firstly, the place is very small so I advise booking especially at a weekend so you are not disappointed! However, once you have a table the size of the place really is its charm! The food was very well priced with all mains for less than £11! My partner and I had a starter to share a main a dessert and drinks all for under £40! the food quality is excellent (I had the seafood pasta) and I would recommend anyone to give this place a try. Seems to be a really good place for group bookings as one large group can almost have the entire restaurant to themselves! The only reason for not giving an excellent is that the restaurant I believe could be decorated a little more Italian style (although it still was very nice) and the restaurant in hot weather really is very warm as the place has no air conditioning. However, all these are very minor and should not put anyone off going. Lovely little place highly recommend!

Visited this evening and whilst the location is in the poorer end of town the food was absolutely amazing - authentic cooking, friendly service and q surprisingly good wine list.

Very good service, food excellent however I had some spaghetti which was stuck together I don't even do that at home. I feel this place needs a little injection of life and promoting, but all good and give it ago great atmosphere.

Cosy little Bistro with a continental feel. Lived in Derby all my life but never visited this restaurant before. Will definitely visit again. Wide choice of food and drink on the menu. Friendly and welcoming staff. Tasty food. Fair prices. Well worth an evening out.

I visited Nicos this evening with 2 friends a nd was so impressed I wanted to write a review straight away. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress and offered a choice of tables. The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. We did wait a while for our meals but it was well worth the wait. I chose the 8oz fillet steak which was cooked to perfection. My friends each had medallions of fillet steak cooked in a spicy sauce and again cooked exactly as asked for. The sauce was made as mild or spicy as you wanted it. The portions were a good size in fact the delicious home made tiramasu beat me and I regrettably had to leave some as did my friend. The other desert chosen was pancakes with maple syrup and ice cream and they were also presented and cooked very well. All in all a delicious meal enjoyed by each of us. Compliments to Lewis the chef and also to the waitress who made us feel so welcome. I would definitely recommend Nicos if you ever find yourself in the area

Restaurant empty on arrival which suited us... ordered starters , very bland , too much freezer taste on seafood platter , prawn cocktail would have been nice with a decent sauce, mains, chicken with pepper lovely , basic pasta good , speciality pasta bland , seems a shame we read reviews , prices seems reasonable but big portions do not deliver quality , left most of meals

Went yesterday, the restaurant is small and cosy with only a few tables insideGot greeted swiftly and was asked where we would like to sit The drinks menu is pretty small, few beers, quite a big range of wines, very little spirits Main menu has a few ranges of pasta, pizza etc Starter we ordered was the seafood platter Wasn't particularly great, quite tasteless and very small, not enough to share for two I ordered a spaghetti Bolognese, quite tasteless tbh, was pretty disappointed( maybe due to comparing it when I had it in Rome) the portion size is tiny lol literally it wouldn't fill a 8 year old Price is very decent Probably wouldn't go again

A group of eight of us went there for our Christmas night out. Couldn't believe the amount of food and it was all fantastic. The shared starter platters would have done me I think! Only downside was no tiramisu for desert, but the cheese and biscuits I had were lovely. I'd definitely go there again, plus the drinks were sensibly priced.

I've been to Nico's before and always have a great meal, however on this occasion we decided to try and new Italian restaurant in Derby... in summary the starters were poor so we decided to make sure we at least had a good main and opted to go Nico's where yet again we were really happy with the food, service and atmosphere. Nico's pizza's are always fresh with plenty of toppings. Also the waitress is always really friendly and chatty. We will certainly be visiting Nico's again soon.

Joined some friends for a surprise birthday meal - had never been to Nico's before but had passed it regularly- have to say the food and service was wonderful - simple menu good choice and not too much on it so that you couldn't decide either!! Pleased being a veggie that there were choices for me too - there was another table the night we came that was very loud and boisterous- but that was no fault of the restaurant- kept us entertained anyway!!

Have been to this place a number of times and my experiences have been consistently good. Service with a smile and very welcoming with nothing too much trouble. Food was amazing, piping hot and very tasty. After dinner coffee was proper filtered coffee rather than the usual machine coffee advertised as filtered.Excellent place with really reasonable prices - highly recommend.....

Their website said they were open from 6pm, we tried phoning but got no answer so took a chance that they would be able to fit us in. Drove all the way from the other side of town only to find it was closed. So be warned, the trading hours on the website are not necessarily accurate and do not assume they will be open. Luckily there are plenty of other restaurants in the vicinity so we were able to find somewhere else.

Tried this after reading the reviews,got to say we were not disappointed I had the garlic mushroom starter followed by spaghetti bolognese both were delicious the wife had prawn cocktail starter followed by rump steak and fries the steak was probably the best i have ever tried outside the US cooked to perfection,all in all i can't recommend nicos highly enough.

Went to Nico's with a friend as we were both working in Derby and the reviews looked good.What a little gem this place is, the host was welcoming and friendly, we ordered a couple of drinks which arrived quickly while we reviewed the menu. While the menu is not huge, less is definitely more here. We just opted for a main as we were not really hungry although the starters looked great. I had the Spaghetti and my friend ordered the Italian meatballs.Both meals were excellent, well prepared with care and very tasty.I would definitely go back, this restaurants ticks all the boxes, friendly, accommodating, great service, great food and very, very cheap.Great for meeting up with friends but also it is intimate and would be great for a romantic meal with your loved one.If you like Italian food cooked with care, give it a try.

Yet another excellent meal at Nico's, lasagne and garlic bianco went down a treat, this must be one of the best value restaurants in Derby.

Ended up at this place because we couldn't park at where we were going. Wonderful romantic atmosphere excellent service and wonderful food. Staff very attentive and talkative. Very good at recommending things. Fairly priced and good portions. Drinks very reasonable.

Visiting Derby to help a family member move into the area, we went for a walk to find somewhere to eat and spotted Nicos. The option of Mexican or Italian was intriguing. We all decided on Italian and the Carbonara, Bolognaise and Lasagne were well presented, piping hot with the right balance of seasoning, not too much sauce and generous portions. All meals were freshly cooked so whilst we waited, flavoursome and juicy olives were a perfect appetiser.The service was attentive but not overly so, the ambience was very friendly, informal and as strangers to the area, very welcoming.A place we would certainly go back to. Price wise, a bit on the expensive side but overall we felt it we had value for money.

I came here a second time and this time had nachos for starter and lasagne for main, both were lovely and freshly cooked. I also had a bottle of the red Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine which was lovely. Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere.

My wife had eaten here with friends a few months ago and suggested we eat there when a rare 'date night' came about with our kids spending a night a grandparents.From the outside it doesn't look fancy, it is only when you walk in you get a sense of intimacy and a warm and friendly welcome from the staff.The menu isn't vast but still presents a variety of options to suit most tastes.We shared antipasti, had carbonara and calzone for mains and shared dessert of half blackcurrant sorbet and tiramisu. We were given a small glass of homemade lemoncello which was delicious also.The food was excellent and the staff bend over backwards to make sure your dining experience is perfect.We'll definitely be returning.

Me and my partner first dined and nicos around 3 years ago when Valentine's Day crept up on us quicker than we realised! They were extremely accommodating when we made the reservations and managed to get us in at a very reasonable time despite the late notice. Since then we have visited nicos at very least a dozen times or more and every time it has been utter perfection. We have taken friends and family to nicos and have never had bad feed back and they have all returned alone since first visiting with us. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough! The service is impeccable and the staff are always friendly and always remember our faces which just adds to the warm feeling of the place.

From the moment you walk in the staff are working on making you feel welcome and finding out exactly what YOU want.They offer a rare combination of informality and professionalism.There is plenty to choose from without the menu being over extensive. 'Hidden extras' in this restaurant basically means they will, give you some ingredients extra not listed on your meal description for free.They are happy to customise dishes to your liking.I had quesadillas, Nicos special pizza, and desert that was like a coffee flavoured ice cream, a large soda and an espresso for £22.Out the large windows is Friargate with its Georgian architecture, a great situation to dine alone and watch the world go by or meet with friends before or after visiting central Derby or the real ale circuit.

I have never had a bad meal at nico's, beautiful freshly cooked food and lovely staff, wonderful place to eat out. I cannot recommend this place enough!!

Having read the reviews we looked forward to going and it was as good as everything we had hoped Very well priced, great home cooked fresh food, the friendliest staff and a warm atmosphere The pizza and pasta are top notch and so are the steaks, we're working our way through the menu week after week. The home made tiramisu matches any I've had in Italy and the portions across the menu are generous I can't believe people criticise the decor, it's rustic Italian, you want tablecloths and expensive tables and chairs then go somewhere else where the prices are double and the food is not as good Can't wait to go back next week the our new local Thanks guys you should be proud of your place you obviously love what you do and it shows

Been here so many times over the years and seen some changes for better and worse. It's a very cosy little place and the staff make you so welcome but decor a little tired and loos very basic but it has that retro feel that makes it nice. The food had to be prebooked and a deposit given as a party of eight which meant as organiser a bit of a faff which could have done without but understand a small restaurant can't take same risk as bigger places. Food beautifully presented and wine flowed so good time had by all. Pasta dishes a bit too much pasta for the sauce, steak tasty but quite grissley and tough...lot of sawing action needed with inadequate knife. Tiramisu was a bit dry/crumbley but waitress warned us of this before bringing it to us. This place has an old world charm and staff cannot do enough for you but food is not the best but not the worst. All depends what you want from a night out and we all agreed it was a good night and can recommend it for family and friends gatherings.

The restaurant is small and cosy, lovely atmosphere, service was second to none.We had seafood platter and quesadillas for starters both of which were fresh and very tasty. My lasagne was the best I've had outside of Italy, and I've tried a few!! The fajitas hubby had looked great and the portions were very generous.The homemade tiramisu made the meal... wonderful...This place is an absolute credit to the family and we will definitely be returning to try more dishes...I'm not designated driver next time so I can have more of the homemade limoncello!!Thank you for a lovely evening, this gem is highly recommended :)

Lovely meals, cosy was quiet when we first arrived but soon filled up, acceptable prices friendly staff will definately go again the bolognaise was lovely

We have been twice to this little place, once about 9 years ago and again recently and it hasn't changed at all. The food is good. Great value and great tasting. The waitresses were friendly and happy to help. Only gave it 4 stars as the tables are old and sticky. Time for a refurb maybe ??

I really do love it here. It's so small and intimate . Great for a night with a few friends. The food is great, not the usual fancy look but good , quality food and good portion size . Their fajitas and lasagne are great. Really really pleasant and helpful staff .

Yet another fantastic meal in this family run restaurant. Calzone, filled to the brim and topped with bolognese sauce and one of their Garlic Bianco's with mushrooms, superb. Follow that with one of mums home made desserts, a great end to a truly enjoyable meal. A warm and friendly greeting as soon as you enter Nico's with that all important smile, it is a winner straight away with service that is quick and efficient.

Had been busy spring cleaning most of the day, so my partner suggested going for a meal. Although they offered an early table which wasn't a problem for us, turns out they had a party booking later on. Lovely well prepared food, friendly attentive service.. tirimasu to die for, made in house by the owners... absolutely the best.
