Nick The Fish of Penn Hill in Poole

Utterly shocked that chips can take 30 minutes whilst I sat waiting as about 10 orders were collected for delivery. No salt and vinegar offered which made for a very bland meal, tiny pea fritters and also the vegetarian options are a complete joke. This is the second time I've been disappointed by this place. Won't visit again.

New to area. Trying to find out best fish and chips. Ordered large fish and chips instore and waited over 25 mins, whilst online orders were prioritised. Fish was cooked well, but definitely wasn't large. Chips not salted/vinegar, or any mention of this being done.May resort back to shop in Bournemouth Road

So disappointed, the chips were so dry it was as though they had been reheated and it was only early evening , the fish wasn't moist again very dry and the batter was so stoggy not nice crispy batter ,

This place has gone completely downhill- undercooked chips, a skinny little burger patty, and fish and mushy peas nowhere as nice as they used to be. Avoid avoid - terrible value for money

We have been coming to Nick the fish for years always been a bit more expensive but was definitely worth it . Unfortunately not anymore chips last night were not nice at all very dry . Looks like they have a new owner if they are going to keep the same high prices as they have then they need to have the same quality as the old owners .

Lovely family run chippy. Honestly some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had, and the curry sauce was the star of the show had a nice kick to it. Highly recommend 👍🏻

Seeing a recent review referring to change of ow might explain my need to express my disappointment at what used to be a reliable chippy. The awful chips, partially burnt where they’ve obviously been left to bake after frying. Neither good texture of potato nor finish on the outside. The fish, Haddock though is good.

Called an order in this time; staff really friendly. Last time we ordered (back in Feb) portions were a little tight but last night we couldn't even finish it all! Glowing review of the cod from the 8 year old and curry sauce is banging.

**1-Star Review:** I used to be a regular at Nick the Fish, but since it changed owners, the place has gone completely downhill. I ordered chicken nuggets expecting what I used to get, but instead, I got some awful processed chicken that tasted terrible. I wasn’t told it was a new item on the menu—I obviously wanted real chicken like before. I called to complain, but they refused to do anything about it or give me a refund. The chips also taste bad now. I asked if they still use ground nut oil, which they always did before, but I doubt it. Something has changed, either the oil or the potatoes, and it’s not good. I also had the fish, and it was nowhere near as good as it used to be—it tasted bad, and the mushy peas were disgusting. It’s clear they’re using cheaper ingredients. The menu is different, and not in a good way. I wasted my money and won’t be coming back. This isn’t the Nick the Fish I used to love anymore. Avoid it!

Fast service time, lovely staff who are very chatty.

Came in for large fish & chips with curry sauce like we do every week . They must have new owners as it shows in the service and the total disorganised within the shop as they clearly knew nothing of how to run a chip shop . I would like to say that the people who run the shop should not be of a foreign origin who don't know anything about proper fish & chips . The curry sauce wow how watered down and totally disuscting the total complete opposite of a few weeks ago ! The fish was ok at best but the chips ( about 20 of them in total ) were hard thin and total uneadable bad bad bad .. We have been coming here for 2 years now and after tonight's disaster of a meal we won't be returning EVER AGAIN !! Such a shame really is as there isn't one even close to us .. Anyone reading this please just avoid this place its gone so down hill within a few weeks .! Run

*EDIT* May24 - 3* down to 2*. Oh dear. Thought we'd give the new owners another chance. But this time, a tiny amount of cod covered in a mass of batter. Asked for battered sausage and got plain. Found out when home. I think we will now find an alternative Fish & Chip shop. Shame, as we've been loyal customers since the original owners opened. *EDIT* April24 - 5* down to 3*. Disorganised new owners at front of house, clearly being 'shown the ropes' by a confident teen! Couple of people failed to make head nor tail of the pointless shiny new self-serve Order point, resorting to old skool order-at-the-till approach. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Chef still obliged with gluten free batter, which tasted good. Let's see how this new ownership pans out...jury's out just now. Shame, as always our go-to. 2020 Always turns out fantastic fish and chips. Kids portions perfect for hungry little people. A local 'go to' chippy. Highly recommended

Be warned. The restaurant has changed ownership (so most of the reviews here are based before the change), and with it has come a big change in quality, gone from the best in town to one I won’t be visiting again. Battered sausage was not battered, fish was over cooked and tasted like it cooked in burnt oil , even the chips have gone down hill.

The new owners are doing things well - crispy non-greasy batter on plump white cod, tasty chips, lovely mushy peas, all served with a smile - couldn't fault it !

So, first time with new owners of this place and sadly having been amongst the best it's now only average at best. Batter over greasy and chips just not crispy and poorly prepared with 'eyes' in many. To add to the experience large chips now not large at all and they managed to miss them off our order meaning a return trip to get them . This is a premium location and they will have to up their game significantly if they are going to maintain local support. Given the machine based ordering system it's no longer possible to get a relationshop with staff but to be fair the last owners installed that. We will not be back, sorry, there is a better establishment locally that fills the premium market.

We always used Nics fish & chip shop but now it has new owners in my opinion it has gone down hill. Sad but true.

Whilst their fish and chips are excellent the buying process is abysmal. Their phone is on permanent answerphone, I couldn't find a way to order online. In the shop there is an impenetrable ordering machine. Orders can still be given at the counter but having paid I was then told there would be a 30 minute wait, which turned out to be 45 minutes. I could see why the delay as , despitethe staff working hard, numerous food delivery company couriers kept arriving with a different order numbering system to Joe Public and their orders were clearly prioritised. I'll go elsewhere next time for my fish and chips - there's plenty of local competition

Superb fish! Our first visit after living in the neighbourhood for two months, but we will be back regularly. It took a while to get the food, but that's to be expected on a Saturday evening and the food was great - especially the battered cod, one of the best I've ever tasted. I can't understand the negative comments some have made.

Used to be good, must have changed oil or something now tastes poor, plus very expensive. Batter and chips tasted awful.

If you're gluten free then this is the best fish and chippy to come to as you can order any day of the week. Sadly they have just installed a silly touch screen device for placing orders if paying by card (demographic is older people so not wise decision) but you can still order by talking with a human if paying cash.

Bought food here for the first time, having found it by accident. Was very surprised (because other trumpets are blown louder) by great quality, decent size cod, and fast service. Will definitely return here. Had previously frequented an alternative Westbourne fish and chip shop, but fatty food, portion size and a very long wait all killed that off. Happy to have discovered Nicks.

Great service, nice staff. Food is a little expensive but portions are big and the food is fresh and tastes amazing. Parking is the only main issue. Few spaces out front but they were all full and we had to find a space in the roads up the hill from it

We had a take away a few weeks ago. Never again will we order from here. The fish tasted like an old shoe and the chips were brown and tasted awful. Even the mushy peas were disgusting 🤢 there definitely will not be a next time. It was horrible!

I always buy my cod and chips here when visiting Poole. My only comment would be that the staff are just a little distant, but the cooked food is great.

What a disappointment, we decided to have supper this evening at nick the fish by pennhill, as our meals have always been good, But not sure what happen tonight as I asked for large cod ? Didn't realise it was a piece of cod with large batter at least 70% was batter, and not edatble plus very grease, very Very disappointing!! As we normally eat here on a Friday but had surgery this week , and fancied fish n chips not chips and batter, couldn't eat much what a waste, Maybe should of waited a day till Friday, My order number was number 25, shame !! Not sure if we will be going back going back ????

We ve had ordered food from here on numerous occasions, but tonight s was not great the pie I ordered was cold as were the chips when it arrived ,such a shame ,I know we had to wait for the guy to do another drop off first but our food was delivered to the door in a paper bag maybe that's why

I don’t normally order fish and chip and find they a bit bland for me. But nick the fish has made the difference. You can taste the quality of fish they use and it’s not greasy butter. It’s worth of visit, and I heard quite a few famous footballers been their regular customers. So can’t be wrong ☺️

The best fish and chips I have ever had in my life. Used to regularly have it but have since moved away to the Midlands. I miss it so much and I can't wait to visit on holiday and have the amazing taste I miss so much. Never found anything half as good since moving :(

Ordered regular chips along with other items and it was more extra small size. I called to ask if they changed their portion sizes and the person said that’s the size of regular. I mentioned I wouldn’t use them again after years of using them and she hung up before I could finish. Really poor service from our local chip shop.

At Nick The Fish of Penn Hill Went there just yesterday eve - bought meals for three - asked if it was ok to dine in - was told first that it was ok - then it became not-ok to dine in all of a sudden. No excuses was presented. Had to bring packed food home just to find out it was missing the drinks. I don't seem to have time to drive all the back to get my drinks. Co-incidentally, I will never find time to go back to them ever again, neither recommend them to anyone I know.

Excellent product. Dreadful customer service. Went tonight was completely ignored by staff for five minutes before they took my order. Waited twenty minutes to get fish and chips. Deliveroo drivers seem to get priority over actual customers who are waiting. No please or thank you , no apology for wait times. Then to add insult to injury you have to open all the boxes to add your own salt and vinegar. They need more staff and have more fish and chips ready prepared especially on a Friday evening when they know the demand will be there. The fish and chips is a good size when you get it but not sure its worth the wait.

I made an impulsive decision to visit Nick the fish on Thursday and expected a good meal. It was not only good, it was great. Great Haddock, plenty of hot, crispy chips, homemade tartare sauce-delicious and friendly, fast service. Thank you Vicky and Nick, we will be back

My favourite local takeaway fish and chips. Fish is lovely and flaky, batter not too heavy and chips well cooked! And plentiful!. I LOVE the mushy peas . Always order 2 portions😋. Had a homemade tartar sauce as a freebie tonight and was certainly not disappointed. I usually order through deliveroo, never had an issue. And also sometimes collect when not too lazy😁always found staff and owner friendly. Thank you and see you again soon.

Went there for fish and chip supper, very busy indeed. Food was delicious only downfall was that personally I found the batter very greasy.

Absolutely disgraceful overpricing for warm, undercooked chips. Charged £3:75 for a large (?) portion which is shown as only £3 online. Definitely would not revisit or recommend.

Waited nearly 20 minutes for order. All deliveroo and Uber were being served first despite coming in after us.

We ordered a takeaway and we found the fish to taste like an old leather shoe. It was all dry and it tasted like it was cooked in 20yr old oil. The fish was definitely NOT fresh. It was dry and had absolute no taste at all. The chips were dehydrated and shrivelled up. The mushy peas arrived cold and overall I wouldn’t recommend that anybody else orders from here. The fish and chips were disgusting!!! I won’t be ordering from here again.

MOULDY BURGER BUN!! When we called to complain about mouldy food, we didn’t specify what it was to the initial person who answered, just that we wanted to speak to a manager. The person then was heard to say “he’s got a mouldy burger bun” indicating they knew! Glad my son didn’t eat this! The mould was enough to distract me from the fact my chips were not cooked thoroughly and the general standard of food was vulgar- a huge shame considering the glowing reviews. Will be taking it further and leaving more reviews for everyone to see for the sake of food safety!

Ordered via Deliveroo and the fish was delicious but we ordered one extra large portion of chips and the one which was delivered was small so very few chips to share around 4 people and unable to contact via phone to query this. The complimentary mushy peas were delicious.

Usually, very good. Today I ordered, and it was not at all. Fish practically fell from the batter it was so soggy, and fish itself didn't taste fresh and was not its normal flakes. There were black hairs in the food, each around an inch. I rang to discuss, I found the lady helpful at first but toward the end of the call, when I said I likely won't return she said - "these things happen". I feel these things should not happen at all, which is what caused me to write this review. I didn't feel the customer service was appropriate, and I won't return. Update: Friends and family visiting soon wanted to know if there was a good fish + chip shop nearby and I said there used to be, but I had a bad experience and said I wouldn't return. They asked me to try it again as it may have improved. Spoiler alert: it has not. I got it tonight: fish is soggy, just feels wet and I wouldn't say slimy as that would be an exaggeration, but it isn't far off that. Not remotely close to the fresh white flakes it used to be. It beggars belief to compare in my mind what it was before compared to now - it's like comparing two entirely separate fish+chip shops. Yes, the chips are fine, peas fine, sauce fine, but people come for the fish. I honestly don't know what happened to this place. This is twice in a row that the quality was sub-par, although thankfully no hairs this time. It seems they're overrun with custom, but it's quality not quantity, and if you're having to sacrifice the quality because you have so many orders - then either hire more people, or take less orders, because you clearly cannot handle the ones you have. It may mean less bank, but you'll have much happier customers and a much better reputation. Edit : response from the restaurant proves what many are saying. They aren’t willing to accept any fault or flaw. Listen to your customers and do better!

Long wait, for (oily) fish that wasn't really worth it... Also the young lad at the front who took my order has terrible manners. Wish I hadn't got in the que, but anyways... Lesson learnt.

Food was okay but there was a lot of oil in the fish, and the waiting system is terrible. They told us to wait for 30 minutes and we had to wait for an Hour:(

I have used Nicks frequently. However yesterday I ordered 6 portions of fish and 6 portions of chips. Only 2 portions of chips arrived - when I rang I got a pre-recorded message so there was nothing we could do but our evening was spoiled. I contacted Nicks the next day, i received a scant apology and told it was up to me to contact Uber -eats for a refund. Terrible customer service. Trying to get a refund from Uber eats has not been easy.

Food good, customer service NOT. Our order got delivered to the wrong address. We phoned Nick The Fish and they said we had to take it up with Deliveroo. That is no help when you are hungry and have paid for your food. We went to our neighbour that had received the order – they said that Deliveroo had returned it to the restaurant. We drove down to Nick The Fish and we had to pay for the food again (not sure if Deliveroo had returned the food at that point). They told us that they had had problems with two or three Deliveroo orders that evening. Why did they not look after their customers and take the matter up with Deliveroo themselves?! Totally unfair and unreasonable in our opinion. We had to pay twice for food and have received no compensation from either Deliveroo or Nick The Fish. We will never use either again.

Easily the BEST fish and chips I ever had! The Pea Fritter is excellent, homemade, with mint and lemon, very fresh and tasty. And the chips nice and crispy.

First time ordering, best fish & chips we have had in a very long time.

The quality of the food remains good but the organisation of getting food orders to calling customers is a shambles and a disgrace. I waited 65 minutes today from ordering to getting my food - no apology for the delay either. Nicks have to decide if they are going to serve calling customers or just become a Deliveroo cooker !! If there are a lot of calling customers take the Delieroo phone off the hook and only serve those that have taken the trouble to visit the shop. Many people waiting were also extremely fed up with the poor service and the time to serve the order. Very disappointed !!

Great quality gluten free fish, ordered large chips and was what I would expect from a small to honest. Hence the 4 star review.

Don’t know, still waiting for the delivery. over a hour later, don’t waste your time going here go to the halfway fish bar instead. it’s the last time we will use this fish shop. The delivery man has been stood in there waiting for the order for the last 20 minutes. Absolute Rubbish!!!!!!

Had a delivery, took over 2 hours!! Fish stunk like it was off when it finally got here. Chips were stone cold. Greasy and soggy food!! Do not go here. Waste of money!!! Would not recommend.
