New King Wah in Newark and Sherwood

We used this restaurant when it was the the Old king wah in town over the savoy cinema and have been many times since. We havnt had a takeaway from there for a long time so thought we would give it a go. Have to say its the worst Chinese/cantonese takeaway we have ever had, some of it was inedible! When I arrived to collect it the staff were all arguing between themselves and were very abrupt with me. One dish was missing!The food was disgusting and prepared and packed with no care at all. The curry dish was so so salty that we just couldn’t eat it, I mean I like salt but this was something else!! Has been good over the years but would not consider going again for sit down or takeaway.

Went for lunch and settled in looking forward to our Chinese delight. The place was empty, utterly bereft of life, it was quite unnerving to be honest. Eventually a server ambled over to the table in the manner of Julie Walters 'Two soups' and took our order. What really annoyed us about the restaurant was that the food was really very nice indeed, we enjoyed what there was hugely. But there lies the problem, there wasn't very much of it at all. I'm not sure who decided on the portion size but it wasn't with adults in mind. Such a shame. Consequently for what we paid we felt short changed. Hopefully, we just v=caught the staff on an off day...

Great place for a meal. staff, most pleasant with great food and good menu

We dined at this lovely restaurant on Saturday evening 9th March. Food and service were wonderful. The only thing that let it down was that the food was not as hot as it should have been, and the plates were cold as well. It's such a shame, a rookie error that spoilt a really good experience.

Heard only good things about the place, they must have all been wrong. Terrible from start to finish. Drink orders taken and eventually we recieved them, ordered a set menu and one extra dish, starters came out fast which would have been a good thing if they weren’t all tasteless, bland and uninspired, plates were cleared and then began the long wait for mains, just before we were ready to give up hope and ask if there’s any danger of us receiving more food it arrived, but we really wish it didn’t. More bland tasteless meat and veg , the chow mein was one of the worst looking meals my eyes have had the displeasure of seeing. The “Chicken” was strangely moist and shiny and looked like large pieces of onion. It’s a remarkable achievement to make so much food and ingredients taste of absolutely nothing and the final kick in the teeth was the cost , charging as if it’s fine dining when in reality calling it Mediocre would flatter the place. Best advice would be go anywhere else you can find.

Visited New Years Eve for my Granddaughter’s birthday and so pleased we did. There were six in our group, table booked for 8.15 we were shown to our table straight away and ordered drinks. Although the restaurant was busy, staff were all very attentive and the everyone’s meal was fantastic, will definitely return.

We went to the New King Wah for my sons Birthday celebrations. We loved the food , especially the duck. The staff were lovely and friendly. It was clean and well maintained. They attended to our every need . Perfect food Nd perfect staff . Thank you , we will definitely return 😊

Just had a take away and it must rate as the worst ever, such a shame as we had a similar order 5 days ago which was excellent. It seems that quality control is absent, but honestly today was diabolical almost inedible

When we first came to Newark, this was “The” restaurant to eat at. Sadly , not now- noisy, often children running amok, and our food was cold, and horrible, as though it had been cooked days before, then kept in the fridge. Before Covid, we employed a student from the violin school who worked part time here. She said the restaurant is very popular with the traveller community, and because of this, appears to have become extremely busy, but less focused on its once excellent food and service. Our employee found working here a tough call, with challenging hours, and often rude customers. She finally left after watching a girl quite happily, and openly wipe her mouth, several times, on the tablecloth !!.

My husband and I had a great Sunday meal at the New King Wah. Both meals were really delicious, rich in flavours and textures. The coconut ice cream dessert was super delicious too with pure coconut chips on the top followed by a special jasmine digestive tea. The waitress was very polite and sweet. However, unexpectedly, I forgot my expensive bag with my pair of glasses, make-up and wallet wih very important documents and cards. The next day I received a phone call from the owner, who by the way, was very respectful and attentive when we were in the restaurant, saying that he had found my bag and kept it for me. Super professional and caring! We are loyal clients now. :-)

What a shame, people used to come to this restaurant from miles around, gone down hill dramatically. Food had been nuked in a microwave, no napkins, cheap laminated menus and waitresses do not know what the food is you’re ordering, they only know by the number on the menu. Not be long before it’s an all you can eat, that’s if it last that long. They still want to charge top dollar for microwaved food

Waitresses weren’t able to provide information about the menu, we had to chase up part of our order, food was average especially the sharing starter. The vermicelli Singapore style was a winner though and would recommend this if you are going and the price is very responsible.

What has happened?! Was great and now terrible in all aspects. All of the fried food was greasy and soggy. Things that we have been having for years have been redesigned and are not as tasty as before. Add the HUGE increase in price and reduced portion size it is now an avoid from us!

Waste of time and money. Taken the wrong order, bad customer service. Too salty food. There are lot more better restaurants around them. Overpriced for the quality of food. Think twice before start placing your order.

We had family meal tonight at New King Wah, which we have done numerous times before. The food is always very good and the staff very pleasant. However, tonight's experience was totally ruined by the people on a nearby table letting their children run around making a ridiculous amount of noise, shouting and being a nuisance. It seemed to escape that staffs notice that at least 4 tables were very unhappy with the situation. The lady on the next table to us was really not happy at all. Someone did mention it to the management and he finally had a word (which had no effect whatsoever!) But that person shouldn't have needed to. It is a restaurant, not a playground and the staff should have spoken to the culprits without being asked to. I think the dining experience for many was ruined tonight.

What’s happened? The food was not good , chewy chicken, fatty ribs, fishy seaweed? Last time we ate here -three months ago it was lovely but now…… we won’t be returning.

Best Chinese Restaurant I've been too. I won't go anywhere else.

Probably the worst Chinese meal I've ever had. The restaurant is quite well laid out although it lacks atmosphere. The two girl waitresses were smart and efficient. The food was very poor, the starters were dry and tasteless, the main course was absolutely covered in MSG and the rice was stodgy and unappetising. To add insult to injury it was expensive we had one glass of wine and one coke and it cost us over £60. TAKE OUR ADVICE AND STAY AWAY, ,

Never been before so thought we would try it, we hadn’t booked. Warm hello and welcome on arrival, asked if we could get a table, we could but had to vacate by 8pm which was fine for us. Drinks ordered and bought along quickly. We had mixed starters, which were lovely, hot and tasty, meat just fell off the bones of the ribs, delicious flavour. I had a sizzling dish and my husband had another dish, both dishes and rice were tasty and thoroughly enjoyed. Served hot, hot plates and heated tray. Waiting staff were all attentive and friendly, checked to see if food was ok on both starters and mains. Decor is a little dated but that is the charm of a sit down Chinese restaurant ( they are not trying to be something they are not), tables were laid with nice fresh linen,glasses and sparkling cutlery. We really enjoyed it and will visit again Thank you

Thought we would pop In for an alternate Sunday lunch. Wish we hadn't, service was amateur, didn't have the wine advertised so had to settle for second best food not hot or tasty. Very bland first foo young I have had without any onion or bean sprouts.. we left most of the food. A Born again Christian was holding sway in the restaurant shouting and ranting, nothing was said by management. In all an un pleasant experience not tobe repeated.

My first time here was a couple of weeks ago on a date night with my wife. The service and food were impeccable. A refreshing change. Tonight I had takeaway and couldn’t resist the Satay chicken kebab I had previously. Just want to say all your food is delicious but the satay kebabs were the best I have tasted even though I’ve had them everywhere from Hong Kong to Thailand to Newark. Well done!

After the first unsuccessful visit years back I decided to give it another chance and ordered take away. Firstly, we have been assessed by a very pleasant young lady; secondly, the food was delicious and fresh, and last but not least the price was reasonable. We will definitely order again

Absolutely disgusted. Walked out after 20 minutes of being ignored. Tables turned up after offered drinks and served we were left waiting so we walked out to go elsewhere. Never have I seen such poor service. Will not be going back.

Waited 1 hr 10 mins for meal. If you don't include the free 20p worth of prawn crackers shoved on the table at some point, obviously to stop us complaining. Rubbish food, the 'meat' spring rolls were the tiny little things, not a real spring roll. No meat in the filling, just raw carrot in pastry I ordered sizzling black bean prawns. Prawns were lovely, fresh tasting and well cooked. However, the black bean was non existent, and the dish was tasteless and bland. All very disappointing, especially for the price. Much cheaper, much better food elsewhere. Will NEVER return.

We visited here for Valentine's night. Greeted not by "Welcome" or "Good evening", but "Have you booked?"Not welcoming at all. Seated and, 20 minutes later, still waiting to be asked if we'd like a drink. Collared a waitress to order drink otherwise I think we'd still be sat there! People who arrived after us were served before us. There seemed to be no organisation for serving tables. Service very slow. Not like it used to be.

Visited this restaurant last night what a shambles the place is still in the 70s with the decor.Food arrived on cold plates not heated trays to keep it warm hence ending up cold and greasy and at £24.99 a head for a set menu used to love coming here please get your business back to a good standard

Ok it was a busy Saturday night. But for the price the portions were very poor. My family all thought so and were disappointed. Not going to rush back 😢

Went in on a Sat Lunch time to be told by an unsmiling waitress they would be closing in an hour but she sat us down anyway but it had made us feel we were putting them out. Only two other people in there. No atmosphere and the girl serving had no personality. Presentation of Starters served could have been better. No garnish. Main Courses were fine. Didn't stop for Coffee.

First time going here, really great Chinese, one of the best I've had, will definitely be going again, service was spot on.

Food was very nice, didn't give 5 stars only because couple of dishes came out different to what I would usually expect from a Chinese, however, was still nice. Can't fault the service. Decor is slightly dated but clean and seemed quite busy for the time of day I was there.

Do not eat at this restaurant/takeaway, we ordered £35 worth of food, and received half the amount you would get at any other Chinese. The food was also cold and bland with no flavour. On top of that, we’ve both got food poisoning after eating from this place. Please avoid eating here, and get your takeaway from somewhere else!

Absolutely shocking, normally this is the best place for food got back home and have the wrong order and got my food mixed up I then eaten some of my egg fried rice to discover to find egg shells in my food !! Absolutely disgusting 😤

This Chinese has stood the test of time in newark for a good reason . The food . We had the set menu which was a variety of meat dishes , £25 , which includes a sharing starter . The sharing starter is gorgeous believe me . No carpark , so use the pay and display near the castle barge , one minute walk .

This place is going down hill. Asked for drink on arrival 20 min later decided to turn up (we was the only ones in) service was awful no welcome or not even a smile. Chicken was slimey and under cooked!!! I was in bed all the next day sick!!! If h want a day off work the next day get yourself hear!!! Or avoid tike the plague!!! Prawn crackers was ok tho

Great food Poor Service. !! Family meal last night While we can’t fault the food or the servers personally there is clearly a need for some retraining as we spent far to long waiting between courses not once were we asked if everything was ok Also waited over 30 mins to have table cleared we would have stayed for dessert and coffee but the lack of services spoiled our experience. We won’t return unless service standards improve Pity as food very good.

Poor service from the outset. Despite arriving for an early evening booking we were placed on a table near the toilets rather than one near the window. We had to constantly ask for service rather than be approached and whilst the girls serving were all very polite, they did spend a lot of time standing together talking and were not being supervised by the Manager in any way. Food was good as always but we will think twice before returning

Food was good as always, service was appalling. Waited 25 mins to be even asked if we wanted a drink, another table of 4 was seated after us and then asked before us for a drinks order. We did comment but unfortunately the young lady was too inexperienced to give us a decent explanation/sorry for this experience. Never mind will still come back for takeaway as it is the best Chinese food in the area.

First visit for 4 years as moved out of the area. This used to be a top class restaurant but is now obviously in need of urgent work to bring it back to standard. The food was good but the staff were surly and inexperienced and were not particularly welcoming. I staff member had to be reminded by me about fade covering and the service was very slow and not attentive in the least. The decor is in need of upgrading and staff allowed customers to wander through the restaurant without face coverings- disappointing- don't go there!!!

The waiting staff were good and the starters were also good. Then the crockery for the main course arrived. The waitress spotted a dirty bowl and took it back, replacing it with another one but both bowls still had odd, tiny, black specs in them. Hmmm. When we looked at the plates, however, they very, very dirty. I'm not talking about a thumb print or suchlike, either. They were smeared across with old food! Pre-Covid, it would have been stomach-churning, but in September 2020 it was frightening. We got up a left. The owner blamed the waiting staff for it but it is 100% his fault for not ensuring his kitchen are following the most basic hygiene practices. Eat here at your own risk. Literally.

Had a great meal here tonight. Hubby and friends have been here many times before and always had a top meal. The Trip Advisor rating doesn't seem fair. Bottom line.... we had a great meal, the staff were attentive and on the ball, thank you New King Wah for a lovely meal

We had a nice time and most of the food we ordered was lovely, I really recommend the duck and the sizzling beef dish but when the chicken chow mein came out it was very slimy and the chicken lacked proper texture and to be honest was not very pleasent. But everything apart from that was very nice.

My husband and I when out for the first time since lockdown, in our 70s To the King Wah. booking table by phone 7 p.m. ,Arrived on time. Were told to wait in the bar for as the table was not read and with a load of other people. Finally we were shown to our table at 7.30 pm. WE then must have wait another 20 minutes for our Food and drinks to be taken, was getting very angry by then. Had to ask a second time for the drinks by . The Spare ribs then arrive. No Main course arrived, time by then was 8 35pm. by that time totally Had enough. When asked the staff where is the Main course all we were told. Its on its way. Got up and spoke to the owner, told him we were leaving , never apologized, we paid for spare ribs and drinks. Then left. we were in there a total of 1 hour 45 minuets,Just for spare ribs, disgusting and scruffy. R & J

Very dissapointed. Expensive so thought it would be lovely. Usually use new island but they were shut tonight. Salt and chilli ribs were dry and had no chilli at all just spring onions. Salt and chilli chips again no flavour to them. Crispy shredded beef was just chewy. Sweet and sour sauce was more like bbq. Will not be using them ever again!

Best Chinese restaurant around.

I'm sure the food here is great but we wouldn't know as they won't answer the phone. Tried about 10 times, several times they were busy, then when it did eventually ring, (on multiple occasions) it rang for a good 45 seconds and they didn't bother answering.

Authentic taste. I've never been disappointed with the food served from this establishment

Does not appear to be a clean establishment all furnishing are drab the food is deep fried and uninteresting cannot recommend would not go back

Been eating at The New King Wah since 1981, always excellent, food second to none, staff attentive & always helpful. Recommended to friends when visiting the area & always hear how they wish the NKW was closer to them. Thank You

Came here for our staff Christmas lunch. We pre ordered to make it easier for the restaurant. Food was quick and delicious, I could not fault the sweet and sour chicken probably the best I've ever had. Staff were all friendly. Will definitely becoming back again!

Really lovely food and service was quick. They arent the most engaging of waiters and waitresses as it seems like they are told not to chat but overall food was great, reasonable price and hit the spot

New to Newark and have been to this restaurant twice. Both time the food has been really good, the service was ok as well. The cost is slightly higher than i would like i will be back again.
