New Imperial in Dumfries & Galloway

Here's me thinking that the owners had got themselves on the straight and narrow and were now producing good food after my last visit, but boy was I wrong. Both of our meals were very salty and lacked flavour. The two boys working behind the counter had no charisma whatsoever, when I called in for my food one of them spoke to a young lad that came in for an order and the language was fowl and for that reason alone I will take my business elsewhere.

This is a lovely Chinese also my local Chinese and I have never had a bad experience with it I think the reason it’s only three stars is because if there’s nothing wrong with it most people can’t be bothered to write about it

Last night my husband and I ordered a takeaway which consisted of the salt and pepper platter, also duck in Peking sauce. When we arrived home to eat it, the chicken was most definitely off!! My husband took a piece, and asked me to smell it as it didn't smell right to him. The stench from it was unbelievable and I could still smell it in my nostrils hours later when I went to bed ... This could have made someone seriously ill, especially a child or pregnant lady. It was not fit for consumption by anything or anyone. The owners will not speak with me or reply to my Facebook messages, even though we have a takeaway most weeks and have done for years. Customer service is as disgraceful as the food. Will NEVER return ... Doesn't even deserve one ⭐🤢🤢🤢

Last three take away orders were wrong, yes three out of three. Returned but refund refused they just stood there and shrugged their shoulders!

Went for a takeaway for 4 people, food was exactly what I ordered and was lovely and hot,very tasty and good portion sizes. Very pleasant service and very clean

We are staying at the Braids Caravan Park in Gretna. We enquired as to the best Chinese takeaway in the area and the New Imperial was recommended. We ordered over the phone and our meals were ready on arrival. We had a chicken dish and a prawn one and both were excellent. Will visit again when we are next in the area.

Always enjoy a takeaway at the New Imperial and can never fault the food. Can always see why some people from the surrounding areas with their own takeaways come to Eastriggs for a Chinese as it does have a good reputation and is worth the drive. Wish it did deliveries! The only negative thing I would say is that certain members of staff behind the counter can be very rude and unpleasant making it an uncomfortable place to come and collect the food from.

We preordered a carry out here last Saturday night and it was absolutely awful. We arrived at the right time and had to wait 30 mins for our food. That wasn`t the problem but the food was. I had sweet and sour prawns in batter alegedly. The prawns were unbelievably tough, who has ever heard of tough prawns, and the batter was as hard as biscuits. I doubt if they were even cooked that day. Sauce was not much better as it was only sour no sweetness. My wifes lemon chicken was passable just, but not worth the money or journey out to Eastriggs. This used to be a good restaurant. Give it a miss and go elsewhere.

It's now eighteen months since we tried the New Imperial and I've promised myself never to go back again in the future. I thought the food would have got better through time since the last owners sold up but it hasn't. The picture frame next to the counter needs to be taken down as it shows a newspaper clipping with the headline "Takeaway fit for an Emperor", but this clipping is over twenty years old and relates to the previous owners, this statement is clearly not the case. My wife's Chicken Chow Mein was so salty that she refused to eat it and my Sweet and Sour Chicken wasn't much better, bits of chicken in thick batter and the sauce was like jelly, gone are the days you used to get pieces on pineapple in the sauce, hence the sweet and sour.

Had a takeaway last night. Disgusting. Tasteless and greasy. Even the prawn crackers were full of grease and soggy. Not often I leave food but my veg chow mein was stodgy and tasteless. Couldn't eat it. Definitely not be back. Gave this another try tonight (06/12/19) just incase they had been having a bad night. Just as bad if not worse. I've never had special fried rice with gravy on before let alone black glupey gravy. Absolutely disgusting. Never again

My dog could have made a better meal! And probably done it quicker! The meal was very bland and watery. I'd ordered over the phone an hour in advance, when I arrived to collect, it was obvious that they had totally forgotten about the order, so I was stood there waiting for 20mins.

Since the takeaway was taken over the recipes appear to have changed and the food quality and taste is very poor. Very disappointed as this was always my favourite Chinese takeaway. Won't rush back 🙁

Heard from a friend that the old owners were back at the helm on a weekend so we thought we'd give them another try. Once again I ordered a Beef & Mushroom dish with fried rice which was as bad as the last one that I had, the meat was like soft rubber and I felt that I was eating a slice of fat, once again most of it went into the bin. Don't know how they cook their meat but they definitely need to change their ways as there isn't many positive reviews to look at. I will certainly have to think twice about ordering a take away from this establishment again in the future.

Very disappointed in meal this evening. Chow mein, plus chicken sweet and sour balls with fried rice and prawn crackers. Rice tasted reheated and very poor, chow mein also chicken had slimy texture and very dark colour, like it had also been reheated, with noodles tasting off. My wife also had soup which had a fly in it, and even prawn crackers tasted off. Such as shame as always have had good food from this place.

Always have a nice take away here. Nice selection and quality is always good. Family visiting always want a take away from here.

Wow £25 for a take away that wasn’t that good. 2 sweet & sour 2 rice ribs and prawn toast, prawn toast was disgusting... wont be back

En una de nuestras visitas a Gretna, 14 de nosotros tuvimos una cena aquí. Está situado junto a la rotonda principal en Gretna (no Gretna Green - dos pueblos), justo enfrente del pueblo y es un outlet confortable pub, con bar con piscina y música bastante ruidoso, lo cual está bien para la generación más joven, y un confortable salón (menos música). También hay una zona para sentarse al aire libre donde se puede disfrutar de comidas servidas, aunque está al lado de la carretera. Las comidas son de la tarifa normal, aunque muy bien preparado y a un precio razonable. Sin duda merece la pena una visita

We've had a number of meals out of the 'New Imperial' since the new owners took over and found them to be OK until today. I ordered a Beef & Mushroom dish and it was that bad that I had to put it in the bin, the new owners must be sourcing the beef from a new supplier because it was atrocious, it was tough, chewy and full of sinew. I will certainly think twice about ordering a take away from this establishment again in the future. I just wish Sarah and Tony who were the previous owners would come back and run it as before.

This used to be brilliant and one of our favourite Chinese restaurants but it's slowly got worse and last week we found it to be disgusting. The chicken is the cheap cubed chicken that you get frozen from farmfoods which appears to be reformed. The quality is dire and the servings are smaller. Avoid

Used to be the best Chinese around but then the new owners came along and it went down hill. I mean like it's still a decent Chinese but I recommend trying another place

This Chinese has really went downhill with the new owners it used to be the best Chinese in the whole area ...I ordered beef and I got white meat that was thin as paper you could see through it ,tasted nothing at all like beef wasn't the right colour I ordered tomato sauce which was defitnetly not tomato sauce it was more like brown watery gravy which tasted vile ...when I phoned up to say I didn't get exactly what I ordered the girl on the phone was very rude to me certainly not a way to try keep your customers when you are rude like that to them ..shame Sarah gave up the Chinese as she is certainly missed by many people ! She worked hard to make it a fabulous Chinese shame as I won't ever be back in it !

We have read a few negative reviews for here lately which is a shame as for us as it is the best chinese takeaway in the region in our opinion.

This used to be the best Chinese takeaway in the area, not any more. There seems to be a definite drop in the quality of the food. Sometimes it is barely edible. Will need to be a vast improvement before I return.

I wrote my last review in March stating that the establishment had been sold and wondered if the new owners food would be as good as the previous owners, well I'm pleased to say that we ordered seven carry outs on Saturday night and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. We hope that the new owners can continue to provide customers with this quality in the future. Well done to all

This is the first time that we have been so disappointed in a carry out from here, and we have used it for many years on a regular basis. The food was cold and not what we ordered. It would be pointless complaining because by the time we took it back etc it would be to much trouble.

We've had eaten there and had take aways from the 'New Imperial' for many years now and the food has always been good. We are sad to hear that the owners have decided to sell this business and move on, we just hope the new owners can continue to provide the quality of food that we've had in the past. Best of luck to Sarah and her husband for the future, whatever they decide to do.

I had the sweet chilli chicken with fried rice was lovely staff are friendly and was fast service with reasonable prices will be back again soon

This establishment is no longer a restaurant, but they continue to do carry outs which are fantastic. The owners have won awards in the past for their food and continue to produce the same quality today

Just had duck orange and boiled rice from here and I certainly won't be back, I don't know what's happened to the place but it's nowhere near what it was.., reheated job for sure

Always a pleasure to get a takeaway from here. Always perfectly cooked lovely produce with great taste. Excellent service.

Really tasteless and watery sauces. I had salt and pepper chicken which I found very hard to find the chicken it was all batter which was like chip shop batter and had a horrible taste. The sauce I had was gravy and was the most tasteless thing I had ever tasted no understatement!!! The rice wasn't even impressive and it's hard to get some fried rice wrong. The dishes come in SMALL clear dishes which are very small portions considering the price also. I had chips rice and curry recently the curry was watery and not very thick or fragrant, the chips were just chips, the rice as I say just not impressive and it was almost £5 I'm sure which is not good value.

Waiting times at the Lucky Date in Annan of 60 mins and at the Mystic Palace in Gretna of 50 mins meant that we, against our better judgement, went to the New Imperial in Eastriggs. Really wish I hadn't it was worse than 'bowfin' (for no-Scots this means absolutely disgusting). I ordered a chicken salt and pepper but ended up with a beef salt and pepper which was covered in what only can be described as a kind of digestive biscuit coating without the sugar. My eldest son has just passed his driving test and took his brother for a MacDonalds - I just wish I'd have gone with them. Never eat here, never order carry out from here it's not freshly cooked, it's barely edible and both the Lucky Date and Mystic Palace will provide you with much more authentic Chinese experience with food that you will recognise as meat. I will never be back, in future when I can't get a Chinese on a Saturday night I will subject myself to a chicken kebab instead of the offerings of this establishment.

Had many a take away from here, enjoyed it immensely, it gets very busy at the weekends so make sure that you phone through your order and a time you want to collect it so you are not waiting around.

Ordered food many times from here and it's usually nice. Ordered a takeaway from here last night with my family and we have all been ill all night. Really a shame as the food is usually great but it has totally put me off going here ever again.

Had a takeaway from here, and was so unimpressed by the quality of the food and the flavours, I almost was forced to stop eating the food I had already put on my plate, and definitely ate a lot less than I normally would (being a gannet and loving chinese food)!The ribs were just passable/edible, but not for a fiver! The rice was dry and forgettable. The mixed-meat chilli ensemble was possibly one of the worst dishes I have ever experienced! The sweetness, which i understand is necessary in some (especially sweet and sour) dishes, was dialled up to 11 and so overpowering I started to wonder whether I at risk of harming myself if I ate it. I also reckon, although do not know, that a large amount of MSG would have been used, and that has it's own health implications!I will not be eating food from here again, which is very dissapointing as it is one of the very few restaurants we order takeaways from due the distance and location, and as I said I love me chinese food.I cannot speak for the service or aspects other than the food and value as it was a takeaway.

Best chinese around the prices are very reasonable and you get good size portions for your money I would definetly recommend it's only chinese I will eat from the staff are all lovely and friendly too The fried beef in tomato sauce with onions and chips is delicious ...just wish they would deliver !

Lovely hot Chinese food from the Imperial restaurant in Eastriggs. Can get a bit busy on weekend nights from takeaway. Would recommend and they have a car park too.

As locals we regularly use this takeaway since moving here 10 years ago, food is always of a good standard, tasty with generous portions and is very good value for money. There are plenty of choices on the menu and they also have a couple of gluten free dishes.

The food here is very tasty and the staff always polite and friendly. It is our first choice when choosing to eat chinese and we are never disappointed. It's unfortunate the restaurant has closed but we will definatley remain regulars.

The best chinese takeaway ever great size portions and very enjoyable especially the fried beef in tomatoe sauce with onions and chips ..delicious ..the prices are very reasonable it's the only chinese takeaway I will use ....I highly recommend !

Fantastic food from here everytime i use it cant praise it enough ! A very extensive menu and all cooked fresh to order have used this plave for a long time and others just dont taste anywhere near as good.And very reasonably priced :)

Take away service fabulous!!!Visited with a group of friends for an eat in meal..... waitress took drinks order, all seemed well, after a long delay - about 10 minutes later the waitress returned without our ordered drink as apparently they don't have half of the things we had ordered. We asked what drinks they offered, the waitress was unsure. Went away to check, returned quickly to advise us there is a menu in the back of the food menu, again would have been good to know from the ofset. Once we had managed to place aOur food order, food came quickly and was fabulous. Over all a funny night, perhaps not always for the right reasons. Wait staff definitely need further training.

Well worth coming off the A75 for excellent food. Staff are accurate, pleasant and helpful. Food is always good and you get precisely what you ordered Good value for money

Without doubt the worst Chinese I have ever tasted.When ordering by phone my wife asked details of a particular dish and we're assured what we would be getting.when opening the dish to my amazement found the exact opposite to what we had ordered.I can now see why Indian restaraunts are by far more popular

I will only eat a Chinese meal from this Chinese takeaway the meals are always spot on ..the best ever !! Good size portions well worth the cost !

service was first class and good value for money, all so was very clean and nice staff ..everyone was so friendly will call again when i am in the area again in the summer and as i go to scotland a lot will be there in the next few weeks

We had heard this was a great chinese restaurant, so decided to give it a go.The restaurant itself looks like it is in a detatched house, and nothing much changes inside. You walk into the "bar" area, where presumably you would wait if ordering a take-away. It was a cold night, and not much warmer in the restaurant.We were told to "just go through" and directed to a door, we went in and it looked like someones front room, although it was sparcely decorated with laminate floor. There was one other couple in. We took a table by a radiator but it was still cold so we sat with our jackets on, the other colour also had their jackets on too. Only "house wine" was available, but it was ok and a good price. We ordered our food (just main courses) and within minutes it started coming out, it was so quick it came before the drinks were served.Food was good, no complaints there. But once the dishes were removed we fancied a cup of chinese tea and perhaps a dessert, but no one came back to see us, our drinks glasses had been empty for some time too.So we wandered through to ask for the bill, the server checked everything was ok, it was, but we said we would have had tea and dessert but no one came back - she replied that usually people would come through and order from the bar! Obviously as we didn't know this was the etiquette we didn't.Not sure we would rush back, food was good, but not outstanding enough to warrant the trip, if we were passing we might pop in.

We regularly get takeaway from this Chinese and have never once had a bad meal from here.They also have a restaurant which can be busy at weekends but the busiest area is the takeaway. Be prepared for longer wait times over the weekend but the good thing is that for all the wait times might be longer it is not at the expense of quality.The food is delicious and if you want anything added in or taken out then it is never a problem.Prices are on a par with other chineses in the area.Personal recommendations would be shredded chicken in Peking sauce or a nice hot chicken curry. The only downside is that they don't deliver.
