New Dungeon Ghyll probably has much more to offer than just a cold, good beer, but for me it was just the place I arrived at, after an intense day of hiking in the mountains. A pint of beer, slowly sipped at a table outside the restaurant, tasted delicious!

Very enjoyable meal on Friday evening following a hike. We had looked at the exciting menu in the morning but didn't want to commit ourselves by booking a table beforehand and rushing back. Relieved that they had a spare table . My husband had the leek confit as a starter which was plentiful and tasty. We both had the seabream which came with new potatoes, olives and spinach. Despite the high cost of the ingredients you didn't feel that they skimped on the portion. 2 nice pieces of fish each, plenty of olives and spinach. We benefited of their special offers, £1 off per pint from 16.30 to 1900. I have no hesitation to recommend this place. The rating is 4 out of 5 as the dinning room is a bit dark but the food was top marks

Unfortunately, the dining experience in this restaurant did not even come close to the beautiful surroundings in which it is located. The building itself is striking, demonstrating the typical slate brick construction on so many buildings in the lake district, however, unfortunately, that's where it's positive impact ends. The decor, which was perhaps intended to be create a classic country pub ambience, is closer to what what one might see in the dining room of a nursing home. David Dickinson would not be impressed. The customer service, whilst civil, lacked any genuine warmth or salutation. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the food was significantly disappointing. The majority of offerings were redolent of reheated frozen food(the phrase 'Aunt Bessies's' was used on a number of occasions), the meats were tough and lacklustre and the pigs in blankets were the worst I have ever seen in 45 years walking this earth. Any exposure that they may have had to a heat source, seemed purely accidental. It is quite frankly, criminal, that an establishment such as this should, seemingly, rely solely on it's isolated position to mug hikers off, who after having traversed some serious terrain, should be rewarded with offerings that are befitting of the great adventures they are. Perhaps they should replace it with a Premier Inn....

We both ordered fish and chips and they were the worst fish and chips we'd ever had. The chips were undercooked and the fish batter was soggy and tasteless. The mushy peas were ok. The waitress did bring us some more chips when we mentioned they were overcooked, and they were marginally better. It didn't seem like any effort had been made with the food at all. The food was served very quickly, obviously not leaving enough time for cooking. It's such a shame as the setting is beautiful but we definitely won't be back.

It really saddens me to write this review. I have a huge affinity with Great Langdale and all the people in the valley that have a genuine passion for this beautiful area. G G or done 20 years now I’ve stayed here and it’s never faltered. Staff are an integral part and I am faulting them one bit. I have issues with Red Cat. I really do not think they understand the culture of the Lakes. It’s laid back and hikers are bread and butter and not done pub down South. The outside area for patrons at the rear has been ‘landscaped’ hence trees giving natural coverage are now gone and wildlife has virtually disappeared regarding birds. Tree felling in the Lakes is not a great idea as it impacts on wildlife. Secondly, the bar area has been extended through to an area that was previously just for patrons of the hotel. This is a quite annoying as now you have everyone walking through the area while you’re eating in the restaurant. Pub mentality. The outdoor area a bar itself is more like a Wetherspoons than anything to do with the Lakes. I really do wish delicacy was implemented on these precious areas that need our care… I hear weddings are a big focus on the hotel. ……No focus on the actual hikers/walkers/runners then just another corporate owned business. Very sad…

Was recommended this place. Looked good. Small menu so hopefully fresh and in a beautiful setting. Sign on blackboard in bar said ‘ask us for vegetarian options’ being vegetarian I did just this and was told I could have the chicken Caesar salad without the chicken, bacon and anchovies… so a bowl of lettuce with some Parmasan shavings then… or the pasta without the chicken… both at the same coast as with meat. That was it. Absolutely awful. So, now don’t laugh, went for the roast beef dinner with no gravy and fed the beef to my dogs, if I have to pay for it then they can eat it. So had a couple of roast potatoes, parsnips and carrots with some mixed greens and a Yorkshire pud for £16! We all had ‘haloumi’ fries as starters, shame they were covered in breadcrumbs and frozen and then deep fried.. I know haloumi is chewy.. but these were like rubber. Took nearly any hour from starters being cleared to being asked if we were ready for mains… One redeeming thing was the lovely chap singing… but he’s not there every day. My family enjoyed their food, and the dogs loved the roast beef, but if you are a vegetarian then stay well clear…

Small food portions, overheard staff talking about portions too, management was cold with no people skills and hid away from any conversations.. food way overpriced and charge 1.50 for choc bar. Lovely views and walks in the area but when asking about the food the chefs were cold and hostile. My advice would be bring food with you and a bottle opener

We had lunch in the Hikers Bar after a long walk and found it to be very pleasant. A small lunchtime menu (with Specials) but the food was excellent quality and unpretentious (I had a veggie curry and my wife had soup) and really nicely presented. There is also a good range of beers. The bar is designed for hikers so is rather basic but the tables are lovely scrubbed pine and very clean. The staff were helpful and friendly. We would certainly return to this venue.

We visited with family this month. The room was a VERY basic twin room, it had numerous cobwebs in the bathroom, nowhere to put your toiletries, clearly not cleaned properly from previous occupants, not enough hangers in the wardrobe, my headboard was on a 45 degree angle, it stunk of smelly dog. The Bar area was ok, but didn't feel right sitting in there (as a hotel guest) when all & sundry can walk in. The dining room, dirty menu covers, no fresh linen on the table, no linen tablecloths, no bread rolls, and yet they say on their menu they have "homemade bread" I think we saw it twice in 4 days, (probably an uncut loaf from the shop) service of some of the staff was dreadful, the food was very basic & repetitive, breakfast was dreadful to the point where some mornings it was inedible, we had a pudding also unedible. I can appreciate the short staffed issue, but it's not the paying guests fault, if you can't cope then you need to half or quarter your capacity of guests, until you get it right. Would we come again............most definitely not, its a shame because the scenery was amazing.

Tables in their lovely garden have stunning views up stickle pike and the langdale mountains and valley. If raining they have covered tables and the bar inside is lovely too - light and airy. There was a long queue to order at the Walkers Bar hatch but the staff member who served us was friendly and the food came out fast so that made up for it somewhat. We had burgers for dinner one evening and sandwiches for lunch later in the week; all tasted good except for the dry bread buns which fell apart in our hands on both occasions (we assume they’re probably frozen and then defrosted so not great quality). All in all, this pub doesn’t offer the best value for money but it’s ideal for grabbing a bite to eat and having a sit after a long walk. We’d come here again if we were in the area.

Having spent Christmas in the Lake District with the dogs, we had hoped to have Boxing day lunch at the New Dungeon Ghyll. A few days before Christmas we popped in for breakfast just to see what it was like, and heck we were disappointed beyond belief. The atmosphere was cold as was the welcome from the staff. The Christmas decorations were non existent except from a pair of sparkling skis, and we were made to feel as welcome as a poo in a swimming pool. We asked for some breakfast as there was still time before breakfast ended, but were told as it was only 20 minutes before the Chef ended his shift, he had packed up and gone home....great !!. So having decided definitely to cancel our lunch plans for Boxing day, we left. Lucky we found a place opposite this excuse for an eating house that was completely different. Oh yes, we spent many lovely hours there so really I have to thank the staff at the New Dungeon Ghyll from the bottom of my heart.

I recently wrote a review about the Sticklebarn pub, I have to say that New Dungeon Ghyll blows that place out of the water to be honest and I’d recommend this place over Sticklebarn. My fiancée and I came for dinner on Saturday to celebrate our 4 year anniversary and we were very very impressed with the overall experience. We were staying at the National Trust campsite near by. We had drinks outside but had to move into the bar area as it was getting cold! Laura ordered the steak special of the week (I can’t remember exactly what cut it was but I think it was a flat iron?) and I ordered the special of the week Beef stew with herb dumplings. We were most impressed. My beef stew was just melt in the mouth cooked to perfection and laura’s steak was grissle free and very moist. We were impressed with the service of the bar staff as well who were attentive and liked a laugh. I ordered a Guinness and black and met with the comment, “sacrilege” which I love, it’s great to have bar staff with some personality and not some faceless robotic automotan just pouring and serving the drinks saying “what can I get you sir? Here you are sir, that’ll be £3.40 sir.”Another nice touch was the live music from the lady with her acoustic guitar. She played classic crowd pleasers and took requests, I enjoyed Crazy Little Thing Called Love and got to shake a maraca as percussive accompaniment. In short, better menu, better staff and just a nicer feel.We will definitely be returning, hungry for more of the same.

On Saturday evening four of us booked a table at 20:00. We arrived at 20:08 and I immediately apologised to the barman for being late (I've worked in hospitality so know that a delay can be annoying). The barman was a lovely guy, very gracious, very friendly and served us right away with drinks. As we were being served an elderly waitress approached us, again I apologised for our lateness but we were all completely taken aback when she flounced off stating that she'd have to see if the restaurant could still seat us! We could see into the restaurant and there were many empty table, it was bizarre. When she came back through but ignored us we decided that it must be OK to look at the menus. Five minutes later we seemingly inconvenienced the lady again when we weren't ready to order and it looked like I'd mortally offended her when I asked if we could go through to our table. Her reaction was laughable, apparently the chef wasn't ready for us! Another five minutes went by and the lady took us to our table (with the exception of a table of 10 people (I think) in the middle of the room just finishing their desserts the room was empty.

We came to the Walkers Bar on a Sunday after working a charity challenge with 6 of our staff being up in the mountains in bad weather supporting fundraisers for over 10 hours. Everyone was really looking forward to a good hearty breakfast! We went in and asked for a table and were met by a rude member of staff who was huffing and puffing about us needing to put some tables together as he needed them for other customers. There were only two other people in the restaurant and it never got busy! We were told we needed to not be in the way, were not given any help to move tables and chairs and felt anything we asked for was met with aggression and we felt very unwelcome. We spent over £72 on breakfast which was mediocre and had a 40 minute wait for food after being told it would be around 10 minutes. One of the party was celiac and was served non-gluten free fried bread on their breakfast. When I checked in with the member of staff about this he just said no that’s not gluten free and didn’t apologise or offer to exchange the plate. They obviously have no idea how serious a celiac reaction can be. Would not recommend unless you want to be made to feel unwelcome and stressed!

My friend and I called into their walkers bar at the back of the hotel , it's only small but warm and welcoming, walkers and dogs are well catered for, log fire to warm you up, friendly staff and the food was fab, we opted for a starter and desert , I had the chicken liver parfait, I'm partial to this whenever it's on a menu and this was lovely, I then went to the bread and butter pud which for me was perfection. I know enjoyment of food is subjective but you would be hard pressed not to find something to suit your taste here, to be honest I didn't expect such quality in a walkers bar. If I lived in the langdale valley I think I would lunch here everyday, good thing for my waistline that I don't .

We went to the Walkers Bar. The food was ok but nothing special. The pan fried mushrooms starter tasted very odd - such a basic dish and yet it was really quite unpleasant. Also we ordered cheesy garlic bread expecting some lovely crusty ciabatta but what we got was some very thin cheese on toast! Odd that such basic dishes were not good. Staff were friendly and helpful (there was an error on our order and they quickly rectified it with a smile) and the toilets were nice a clean and well maintained (unlike the Sticklebarn pub next door). The location is wonderful and the atmostphere very nice (we sat outside with beautiful views) - but the food really needs improving.

We were staying further up this stunning valley but decided to walk down to new dungeon ghyll to try their food on a recent Friday evening. There was a very limited menu available but I have to say the lamb tagine I chose was delicious. My husband was less pleased with his mince and vegetable pie with chips. The whole meal was very small, no sign of any vegetables in the pie and the chips were poor. Looking at the other dishes as they were brought out, apart from the tagine, nothing looked very appetising. We certainly will not rush back when there are much better meals available nearby.

I love this hotel, I go here for a weekend every year, what a wonderful place it is. Very very different from the formulaic pubs that now occupy the Langdale Valley. You can come in here and be welcomed just to drink and chat, you don't have to eat!Super friendly and warm, on a sunny day it is out of this world, big beer garden as well. The beer and the food here is excellent and not overpriced as is almost everywhere else in this valley.

Popped in for a pint and some food following the Langdale Half Marathon. Ordered a couple of pints of wainwright, the sausage & mash & the chilli. It arrived in good time, and the beer was excellent. The chilli was served with good chips but dry rice (half and half). It was spicy but the main flavour was beef OXO, the meat was odd, not bad but not quite like beef or pork mince - just a bit odd in texture. The sausage & mash - the sausages were cooked to a good colour on one side but a bit soggy on the other so that the skin could easily separate from the rest of the sausage which isn't all that nice. The mash was something i've never seen before - tasted of mash but looked like rice - perhaps mashed in a food processor? Anyhow - for a professional bar/restaurant all a bit wierd. Cook the potatoes for 20 mins, put them through a ricer, add butter guys... All in all, though we'd just run a fair bit and were starving we couldn't face finishing the food, had our pints and left. Its a shame, as I've always thought food in the Lakes stays at a good standard because of all the business. But here i was disappointed.

Set in an absolutely stunning location, this traditional-style pub attracts a range of customers, from climbers (this is one of the earliest recorded climber-friendly spots) and walkers through to families using the fabulous National Trust campsite across the way, the all important locals and the occasional day-tripper. The centrepiece is a massive range or cooker which glows invitingly when there's a nip in the air. Lakeland ales await along with hearty fare, assorted steaks, pies etc in generous portions. No frills but a cracking, proper English pub. Sorry can't speak for the restaurant as even when we've stayed here, we've chosen the atmosphere in the pub as our prime option.

There are two parts to the hotel - the formal restaurant and the Walkers Bar. We wanted to experience both during our holiday but the Walkers Bar was too crowded on the night we tried. This is obviously very popular because of the large amounts of fell-walkers, cyclists and campers who want somewhere to eat and drink without the pressure of worrying about appropriate footwear. On our last night (Friday) we are in the restaurant (having booked). On entering the hotel, we were struck by the attention to detail and lovely touches from the staff eg being shown into the lounge to look at the menu, having our order taken but waiting comfortably nail being escorted into the dining room. The dining room looked stunning, beautifully lad tables, soft lighting and candles on every table. A refreshing, discreet approach from the staff instead of unnecessary chatter and silly comments which seems to be the norm in most restaurants these days. It cost £20 for two courses and our meals were lovely - we had steaks and a lamb tagine. We finished the evening with coffees in the lounge. Having been fell walking all week in very casual dress, it made a nice change to be smart-casual. In conclusion, if you've got muddy boots and muddy children or dogs in tow, head for the Walkers Bar. If you want a break form that and want something more special and to sit in glorious surroundings, head for the restaurant. Obviously the hotel looks great but we weren't staying so I can't comment on this. Highly recommended.

The food is average - reasonable portions but nothing to shout about. It will fill you up if you are hungry. The burger was disappointing- the patty was quite small and was rather overwhelmed by the much larger bun. Not worth £11.95. The meat pie was ok and so was the fish & chips. There is a real log fireplace, but otherwise there is not much of an atmosphere. Have a meal here if you are in the area but no need to make a special journey.

This pub is in a beautiful part of the Lake District. The surrounding mountains were capped with snow on 9 February. Lunch was had at a reasonable price. The beef and vegetable pie was a little too salty. There was a nice log fire in the pub which was rather cosy. The staff were friendly and service was efficient. I would not come back here for a meal but to have drinks outdoors on a warmer day in such a beautiful setting would be nice.

Hope they will make some adjustments in that department. Also WIFI signal was only working in their lounge and pub area.

I would say that this whole place suits clientele of retirement age and above. There was very little ambience and the decor in the dining room felt like it was designed in the 80's...very lacklustre which isn't a reflection on the restaurant itself per se but just not to our taste . The service overall was good although the older waitress who greeted us on arrival spoke in a very curt manner and appeared inpatient when we were deciding what to order. That said, we could not faultthe starters or main course albeit they weee rather small portions, however the desserts had to be returned (0plum crumble) due to not being cooked properly and being served cold. The staff were however very apologetic and deducted one of the desserts from the bill. Rather disappointed overall at the eating experience of this place but can see the attraction for people that likeThe old fashioned traditional hotel restaurant ambience.

It was a beautiful evening so we sat outside in the last of the sun, and enjoyed a really tasty meal - homemade hummus followed by a perfectly cooked steak and Cumberland sausage. The presentation and delivery were beyond expectations (similar food to be had at the O.D.G. but slightly more slapdash there) and we really enjoyed our meals. Service and beer were also great. We stayed at the Great Langdale Bunkhouse so there wasn't much choice around for walkers in terms of food, so we went in here. As walkers we were only able to use the 'walkers bar', which even with a small log fire felt a bit cold and uncomfortable with only hard tables and seats. The service was friendly however, and food was average hearty pub food. If you're looking for something special whilst staying in Langdale, this isn't the place (head up the road to the Old Dungeon Ghyll), unless you are in fact staying at the hotel here. The staff were kind enough to fill up our flasks on two mornings ready for our hikes as at the bunkhouse we didn't have such facilities. Visited the NDG on New Years Day and were pleased to see they were serving food (as many pubs etc were not!). Can't fault the place, food was excellent and service was fast and efficient. What made it for us was the two young lads behind the bar (apologies for not knowing your names!) went out of their way to make sure our 3 year old daughter was happy, they brought out a chocolate milkshake which she loved and we hadn't asked for it so thanks for that. Might not sound much to some doing this but it's the gesture of making sure your customers are happy which is what it is all about. The place - Stunning surroundings but the 'restaurant' is a small room, with wooden tables and chairs, it looked very bare. Certainly not what we were expecting, and not the impression that the website gives you. Plus, our table had not been wiped down from the meal before and once asked for it to be wiped down, the young man did so with a rusty pan brush! He assured us that was not the scouring pan brush....but even so, it was rusty and smelt awful. The toilets were not too clean either.Food - very pricey, that is what comes to mind, for what is on offer. I had a mushroom soup and a cheese/chutney sandwich (the soup was very nice); hubby had a quarter pound burger with chips (which he is sure they were frozen, and he is a retired chef); we had a tea for one and a half pint of soda and lime. This came to £21.10!!!Quality - the soup was lovely and so was the homemade chutney. My husband burger was well cooked, though very small - certainly not a quarter pound. The chips frozen and machine cut. Our daughter had fish and chips. The fish was well cooked, but again, disappointed by the frozen chips. Plus we had to ask for mushy peas as the dish was served with boiled carrots and cabbage!! Where on earth is fish and chips served with that? Apparently, the chef had forgotten the mushy peas.Service - the young man tried his best, he was friendly and put up with us (we were rather disgruntled with the disgusting table), but again he was not well presented. His uniform was stained and it was only 1pm by the time we got there. BUT - he was serving drinks as well as food....All in all - would we go again? Yes it the prices were cheaper as it is NOT a good value for money.

The hotel is in a lovey setting, right amongst the fells. On arrival we went into the walkers bar whilst waiting for our room to be ready in the main hotel. We were greeted by too lovely young people who organised two breakfasts for us which were super. Quite soon our room was ready & we were shown in. I was very disappointed in the room as it was very tired looking & needed a paint. As it was my birthday weekend I was hoping for a nicer room for the price. We went for a walk & on our return my partner mentioned the room to the same lovely girl that had served us earlier. She very quickly spoke to someone else & we were promptly taken to another room. This room was much, much, better. It had recently been redecorated with new soft furnishings & the view from the windows was amazing. We were more than happy to move. So all in all a satisfactory result. We dined at the hotel & the meal ws lovely.

We arrived in lovely sunshine but were disappointed to find that contrary to the impression given in the advertisement by Lakeland Retreats of sitting on your decking enjoying the sun there is no sun as the Lawns is surrounded by high trees making the interior constantly dark. You have to put the lights on for your breakfast and if you eat in later in the day then also. My partner decided to have a bath the first night but unfortunately contrary to the management company's assertion that there's a constant supply of hot water the hot water ran out and the water turned cold. This happened twice as it did to our neighbours in the adjoining Lakeland Retreats property. We normally have a cooked breakfast on a Sunday but we were appalled to find that the two frying pans supplied were pitted with rust and unusable. Finally as the season turned from summer to autumn the evenings got a little nippy. We tried to turn up the storage radiators but found that the controls are blocked by wooden brackets screwed over the radiators so you can't use them. A beautiful area but we won't be using Lakeland Retreats again if this is the standard they aspire to!
