We come here every year . We visited last night . Food was lovely . Staff welcoming . We got our food quite quickly . There was 11 of us yesterday and every meal was tasty . Fish was dripping with all like some places , see you all soon , thank you

Unfortunately gone downhill!! Food prices have increased immensely. Food was just ok, portion size a little on the small size. The toilets were absolutely disgusting!! Clearly not been cleaned in a very long time. Grime round the taps, floor and the hand rail going up was gross!! We won’t be back which is a shame as we used to go here all the time.

Unfortunately not the best of food sorry folks, understand the menu states fish may contain bones but blimey it was definitely not filleted properly.

Very good food, decent prices, nice dining space outside. Friendly engaging crew. I've been before and I'd go again, definitely recommend.

Food was okay and it’s all an enjoyable time with my family until I can hear shouting from who looked like was a manager at a young girl I could hear the young girl wanted to cry by the sound of her voice and she kept apologising but all I see is this older man with a grey T-shirt and glasses shouting at her. If that was my daughter I would be sueing the owner immediately after him shouting more or less in her face. Poor girl won’t be coming back

First time here. Batter wasn’t crispy. I waited an extra 20 minutes as my order wasn’t ready. After receiving my order, batter on the Cod wasn’t even crispy. (Usually batter is the best part). Also, the Cod was not meaty as Cod should be. Fish was paper-thin. It wasn’t real Cod…. The Gerkin (my snack, because I had wait sooooo long) was super tasty. Maybe because I was starving or because it was from an external supplier? STONGLY advise locals & tourists avoid at all costs. Look elsewhere.

We decided to have a late lunch so came across this lovely looking place. We were in. Southend from Kent at the request of our daughter for her 18th Birthday. Would have been nice to have had sugar free drinks and the food took nearly 30 mins to arrive so we were really hungry. Other people arrived after us and their food arrived quicker. Was told we were waiting on the scampi that our daughter ordered. The food when it eventually arrived was lovely. Very well cooked (2 x Haddock and chips, Burger and chips and scampi and chips). Staff did look a little bored and a few smiles would have been nice. Overall we enjoyed it and the food was really good.

Absolutely lovely place to eat, Very clean, friendly and helpful Staff, the food arrived quickly and was 5 stars. Would highly reccomend this place to eat in if you visit Southend seafront.

Prices have gone up as expected but quality not as good as it used to be. Luckily we had finished our food when we saw the young blonde waitress looking in the mirror picking her spots and the older man who I assume was the owner saw her do this and not say anything just shrugged his shoulders when this was mentioned Do not recommend

My partner and I dined here after the fireworks, we was seated almost immediately, our order was taken and the food was served in a timely manner, food was fresh, hot and delicious. My partner and I were trying to have a conversation and it become clear it was going to be impossible for us to talk, loud loud people shouting not talking to each other across the tables many times I had to ask my partner what he said as I could not hear him. If you want a quite meal this is not the place for you.

I organised a weekend trip to Southend-on-Sea for 14 people and decided to take the group to Neptunes for meal. I called days before to book a table and spoke to a lovely lady called Charlotte. She agreed to do a meal with a drink at a very reasonable price for each person. On the day, I sent the groups orders ready for our visit in the evening. Charlotte and her team were wonderful, it wasn't long we arrived that all the food and drinks came out to our table! The team were so welcoming and friendly, they served with a smile and the food tasted fresh and tasty too!Thank you for serving us with a smile, we had a wonderful time!

Tastey food plenty of choice, the chips were not greasy which was a huge plus as many of the places in Southend hand you a bag of grease.Friendly fast service and the price was fair. Sat outside was a nice location.Had mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side was delicious, plenty of lemon and haddock was cooked beautifully

After a day (friday 27th) of rides and pier walking we needed food before heading home. Went in to Neptune as it looked inviting and there were already a few people sitting in. Met by a member of staff as soon as we entered and sat down. Drinks order taken and food soon after. I ordered a mug of tea, and it was a proper mug, omlette and chips. Son and hubby ordered burgers. Food was really good, proper chips. Burgers looked good and so I was told really tasty as well. They both had milkshakes and they were huge and really presented well. Generous portions and although the puddings looked good, we didn't have any room to put them. great value, friendly staff and value for money. It got very busy while we were in there as well which goes to show they do good food!!

Friendly service, attended to as we entered, beautifully cooked cod and chips ( small salad included on plate ) thin crispy batter, beautiful chips. also on the menu, proper sliced loaf bread and butter, a cup / mug of tea which tasted great. Reasonable prices.

The chips from here were really tasty and not greasy. However, they were served in polystyrene trays. Why? Get cardboard trays. Polystyrene plays a part in destroying the very seas they are opposite. It's insane that Southend council do not ban the use of polystyrene used in this way.

We were out with our 3 kids and they needed feeding fast! We popped in here on a whim - very happy! Food was fantastic - good portion size and great value was £33 for all of us! Would definitely return if we were in the area again

We decided to visit Southend on-Sea today (18-07-2021) and chose to have lunch in this fish & chip shop.We were shown to a table for four (we were four adults ) and given a menu to make our food choices. The restaurant area was nice and clean, we had a good distance from other couples and were looking forward to a pleasant meal.We asked clarification of what is included in the chicken and beef burgers. Two of our party cannot eat tomatoes, although I like them. I also asked if the burgers come with chips?The waitress said they did, but they are elsewhere on the menu. (Basically you need to order them as a separate item).So we ordered 2 x chicken burgers, 1 with tomato, 1 without. 1 beef burger, without tomato and 1 portion of chips. The other member of our party ordered ‘eggs, beans and chips.When the chicken burgers were brought over, she couldn’t tell which one had tomato. Not surprising really because neither had any! Annoyingly for some reason all the burgers also came with a portion of chips (so we ended up paying for two portions of chips we had not ordered, but had been given.One of our party was the kind who would have created a scene had we called the server to tack over what we had been given. The server had left very quickly and we could not raise the issue until it was time to pay.We are not stupid and knew it was far to late to do more than complain about what we had had to pay for. However what really annoyed us was no one came over, no one came to check on what we had said and basically ignored us.At the very least I would have expected the manager to come over and apologise. Rather than wast two portions of chips we didn’t want (but paid for) we got a container and bought them home with us.Would we return? Because the food was nice. Was hot. Was fresh, yes, we would. However I know now to give the order to the server but then get them to repeat it back! That way, everyone knows exactly what is ordered and what we, the customer expects to receive.

I hadnt seen the reviews before going, but I have to say it was a lovely takeaway.. we had 2 cod and chips and large sausage and chips.. which was reasonably priced and if you are expecting the seafront to be cheap then guess again... this is one of the cheapest on the seafront and I have to say we were very pleased with it.. the batter was lovely and crispy and the chips were crunchy. We will certainly be coming back again and will recommend. It just goes to show that you cant always believe what you read.. I do admit that we had a positive experience and staff were friendly. Keep up the good work

A meal for four was £16, fine if we both had fish. Very pricey for x1 fish x1 sausage and x2 chips. My fish was very poor quality, soggy, flavourless and sauce provided was not even heinz. I expected more and was disappointed. We wont return.

Really nice fresh chips which were served fast. Would recommend if you are looking for fish and chips in Southend.

Awful wouldn’t even let us in!!! Was asked to wear a mask to which me and my partner are exempt!! Was asked to prove this which is not a illegal requirement. We should not have to provide evidence of our medical conditions and the government actually states this. This was unacceptable and embarrassing for us and you should be ashamed!!!! Mask policing is awful and no one should be made to feel this way. I will never ever return and will be spreading the word on your awful behaviour. My son was so upset!! No one has to prove a medical condition some illness are invisible how dare you!!!!

By far the worst place I've ever eaten in. Tried changing me for items i hadn't asked for. Even the seagulls wouldn't eat the food.

Had lunch at this restaurant today. (23.10.20) The food was perfect, not greasy at all, well cooked and a generous portion. The friendly waitress welcomed us at the door, she followed Covid guidelines completely by checking we were wearing masks, taking our name and contact number, asking us to use sanitiser then showing us to our table. She explained we could remove the masks while seated but would need to wear them again if going to the toilet. I especially liked her approach to this. In other places I’ve found some waiters to create a horrible atmosphere by saying what we can and cannot do, however she explained it in a very casual friendly manor which made me feel more comfortable. She was attentive and chatty with my children, which made for a nice relaxing lunch even with the current situation. I would happily return and recommend :)

The service was poor, young rude girl with no mask and did not sanitise her hands between serving us and other customers. Touching till etc. We ordered A large portion of chips, we were served about a handful, no fork given to eat with. The chips were not nice. Support a more deserving business there are plenty of other shops around.

Terrible service , food and they will rip you off. There are many restaurants around use them and do not waste your money on this terrible fish shop.

Would never ever eat or recommend this shop to my worst enemy the staff was rude aggressive,when I asked about the cleaning process I witnessed, again staff was extremely rude,the young girl used the same cloth to clean the tables, menus,seats n baby high chair, I cant rate this shop at all Especially with COVID-19 you would of thought it would be much much cleaner

We had breakfast with them was lovley big portions. Very helpful server's very friendly. Lovley proper milk shakes and coffee.

I wanted to have meal with the kids so i asked for 6 fish and chips portions when I saw how the portion is big i asked for a smaller portion but because I have already paid they refused to change my order , even though I didn't take anything yet of the counter !!! total rip off .When I chose this place I did because the long queue they must be very good but when we got the meal it wasn't that great and we had to bin half of it.

Went with family and grandchildren this week. Apart from the lovely girl who served us , who was brilliant, the food was awful. Out of the 10 of us no one had a good meal . I always try and find something good to write about everywhere I go but not this place . Avoid !!!

We had a day in Southend on Sea in June and of course wanted Fish & chips for lunch!There are dozens of restaurants offering this (only take away available at the moment) but we are so glad we chose Neptune’s. £8:50 for large cod & chips, we walked across the road to the beach and sat in the sunshine whilst enjoying as good a fish & chips as we’ve ever had. Well done Neptune’s!

Worse chippy I ever been to. Expensive and greasy as u like. Bring back old school baileys all day best chippy ever in Southend but long gone(remember them queues along seafront lol)

We stopped by for a bite - judging by other reviews, we must have arrived on a good day, as the restaurant was not overly busy and the food was fine. Service was good, fast and friendly. Would return on a future visit to Southend.

Do not go in here. Just don’t. Old guy in the back swatting flies surrounded by mountains of dirty dishes. Should have walked out then, but when you’re starving... Soggy, wet batter, tasteless fish, undercooked chips, angry chef...waitress was lovely but come on guys? Does anyone really want one slice of cucumber, one slice of tomato and 4 pieces of shredded lettuce underneath their fish? Positioned perfectly, this could be the one, sadly it’s not.

In Southend for the day recently so popped in here for fish and chips. The service and food were average, nothing special, pricey too for what we had to eat. Will try somewhere else next time.

A delightful meal.1/4 burger and chips. Plain omelette and chips,peas. Sausage egg chips and peas all cooked to perfection (cleared plates). Friendly helpful staff. Parking nearby usually chargeable

My goodness where do we begin? Always check trip advisor. The fish and chips were quite possibly the worst we have ever experienced and we have certainly had some bad experiences over the years. There were tell tale signs on the tables as quite a few plates on empty tables contained over half of the food that people had ordered , and left. The fish most definitely was not fresh and what on earth the fryer did to the chips I do not know. The most awful taste remained in our mouths for the rest of the day.The bins outside the restaurant were full of thrown away food. As you can imagine, that is exactly where ours ended up. At £17 it was some of the most expensive rubbish we have ever thrown away. Never again

Don’t eat here. This is the worst chippy I’ve experienced. ‘Milkshake’ made without ice cream. The milk in it didn’t taste fresh. Soulless, tasteless chips - I ate two.Very dry cod in a horrible stodgy batter. Staff member lugging boxes of “frozen fillets” through the delapidated restaurant.Bottom of the barrel tourist trap rubbish.

I went here with my family to eat at this positively praised fish and chip restaurant raised by another holidaymaker, we checked the opening and closing times but when we arrived ,it was raining heavily,we were told by a young looking waitress who told us that they had shut, this is pathetic as I’ve never heard of any fish and ship shop with indoor seating to close due to the weather! Just appalling and laziness of the staff and business, so I inform you should go when the weather isn’t so bad or just don’t bother at all if the weather is horrible

Southend and fish & chips are synonymous; it’s just that the fish needs to be fresh, not frozen as it was here and the chips crisp and tasty, not just hard. I will discuss the batter. No, on second thoughts, best not! Crisp is the key word surely, not a bread type crust as this was. There must be better chippies in Southend, but this put me off looking.

We called in on Sunday for Fish and Chips for 3 of us.

The food was awful. Looked like it was thrown together and had no taste , Save your pennies and Spend your money elsewhere it will be worth it Definitely do not recommend

Celebrating my sisters 65th birthday. There were 9 of us, had to wait 10 mins for 2 tables together to fit us all. Some of us had rock, some cod, some haddock. 1 had chicken nuggets 1 had sausages. All meals came together and everyone agreed all the different fish we had was good, Friendly young female staff, We were all happy with our meals & service.

Expect to pay extra at the seaside,but £9.95 for fish and chips plus £1.75 for peas,scandalous,don’t usually mind paying for good food but the chips were tasteless and hard and the fish was dry and had very little flavour,disappointed!!!!

Visited Neptune’s last week and it was disgusting! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! It’s totally over priced and awful! The worst food I have ever had in my life! I usued to go here when I was younger and it was beautiful, but when I was talking to a local about how awful the food was she informed me it was under new management! If I could give it a zero I would! This place should be shut down..

Quite busy today, but what do you expect on a sunny Easter Sunday. A bit of a queue but soon went down and well worth it. Great fish and chips. At a fair price. Will return.

Terrible, dirty restaurant, dirty workers, rock fish was just batter and bone for £10 very over priced this fish and chip shop has nothing on ‘The Ye Old Chippy’ down the road it’s a shame that is not open all the time as had to resort to this place

I live in London and went on a day trip to Southend. We went for lunch at Neptunes and it was the best fish and chips I've ever tasted. Would highly recommend.

We fancied fish and chips when we come here, there was a lot of staff around, when we order I had a omelette, it was nice his burger was BLOODY greasy, so much come off when he picked it up, I had a milkshake i knew it was the stuff u add milk to I have it at home his hot choc tasted horrible. Then a staff memeebr was going home we over herd the manger or who ever it was saying okay we will pay you every weekend gave him cash in hand he walked out the door, never again will I come back to this place, I should gone some where else, I fancied fish but £9 or £8 for fish,that is a rip off, I would pay that in a nice restaurant not in this place.

Went with my family after a day out in Southend, for traditional fish an chips. Had the worse fish an chips ever an worse restaurant experience ever. The lady who took our order was ok but very slow in service but was quick with the humour to recoup her mistakes.But took her awhile to take our order as she was to busy talking an joking with other staff members. The food was below standards for what they were charging. The chips were warm but dry you could tell they had been there awhile an the fish may have been fresh but was dripping in oil,an not even crispy inside or out. An looked like it had been thrown on the plate. An the worse of all which I've never seen in all my life was a small mouse running around the restaurant, an then disappearing under the vacant table an chairs.Avoid at all cost as couldn't believe what I saw or how dirty the place was. Would not recommend to anyone.

Nice pleasant meal with excellent staff. On a cold February day it was just the thing to warm you up.

We have had chips a few times from the takeout window we have never sat inside.

After a long walk along the front stopped for a bag of chips and a drink. Service was a little slow. Chips were good but salt pots needed a clean. They could also do with a better selection of cold drinks. Little expensive but probably to be expected as they are on the seafront.

After waiting for 15 mins yesterday we asked if it was table service or if we needed to go to the counter. We were curtly told that they were busy and would be over in a while. So busy that they had 5 empty tables and this waitress proceeded after another 5 mins to clear a table opposite rather than take our order. So we got up and left to go and spend our money elsewhere where we wouldn't have to beg to be served.

Visited Neptune’s in July and thoroughly enjoyed the meal.The only minor complaint was that the chips could have been done a bit longer.

Not great quality of food and expensive for what you are getting but friendly service and located on the seafront.

For a sea side town this is the worst fish and chips we’ve had. It was £8.50 for takeaway cod and chips. The fish tasted awful ( we left it) the fat needed changing so the chips weren’t good either and to cap it all it was served in a non recyclable polystyrene container. You charge more for your sub standard fish and chips than Southwold!

Went on Saturday before the firework display so it was very busy. We were seated quickly and our fish and chips was hot, fresh and tasty and served quickly and efficiently. Shame it's not licenced as a glass of wine would have been great but the tea was fine.

After visiting a couple of really awful restaurants in Southend, we found this lovely restaurant a few years back and go every time we visit there. The food is cooked fresh and the chips are really good. My husband loves the fish, and I have enjoyed the veggie options. I had a plain omelette and salad this time, and it was cooked to perfection and a good variety of salad, including beetroot. Ok, the place is quite basic but it is clean and the food is the whole reason we go there. The staff are always polite and friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. I have never felt rushed either, despite this being a very popular place to eat.

Came here on a rainy day for lunch with the other half. Service was quite slow and it’s quite run down and tired looking, but the food was alright! Scampi was nice. Chips a little anaemia but perfectly edible and piping hot. The price is a bit high for what you get - cod & chips, 6 bits of scampi & chips and two cans of coke came to £21.50!

I was visiting Adventure Island with my cub pack and we wanted to have dinner on the beach. One of our leaders approached the Neptune during the day to find out the cost of a kids meal and Kate was brilliant giving us her mobile number so we could order later.

This is an eat-in and also take away. We had fish & chips and also a childrens sausage and chips. The fish and peas were fine, as was the sausage & beans. The chips however were very pale and although cooked were not very appetising.

I see they are looking for summer staff and boy do they need them.Long wait for order to be taken then they mixed up the cod and haddock, forgot one order of coke, we had to ask three times before it arrived and as for the chips the worst chips we have ever had.Our advise walk past , the service needs attention ,the chips need proper cooking and the prices are too high.

Nice fish and chips and coffee. It was very quiet and did not had to wait for long . The fish and chips had salad too it was nice. The waitress was a kind lady .

Disappointing food...cheap quality produce which showed on the plate. My scampi was at best described as soggy breadcrumbed fishy tasting mush. My partners burger was partially cremated and dry. Service was adequate but adding extras which other places offer as part of meal bumped up the price. Would not go there again.

We queued for a very long time (queues were an hour long) and then decided to go inside and sit down as it seemed to be moving quicker. We did get a table faster, but the service was still shockingly slow and not particularly polite or friendly. When the food came the chips were terrible but we’d waited so long we ate them any way. As we left, the people that were in front of us in the take away queue were just being served. It was very busy but this place is only busy because of its location, nothing to do with the quality of the food. Prices were also pretty high.

The first visit we got chips from Neptunes me and my partner really thought they was amazing.

My fiance had cod and chips from the takeaway hatch of Neptunes. The fish was cooked fresh while we waited and was reasonably priced and tasted great. It got a thumbs up from the fiance!

Was very clean & tidy, got served very quickly. The staff were very friendly only thing was it was pricey. Cost us £27 for burger & chips and nuggets & chips with drinks. The food was really good though and it wasnt canned coke it...

I'm currently sitting in this so-called fast food restaurant and I've been waiting over half an hour for fish and chips!!! Honestly how hard can it be for goodness sake! The slowest most awful service ever. Avoid this place it's terrible

We visited on a sunday afternoon and there were two other occupied tables at the time of our visit so very quiet.

Milkshakes ordered where a thin watery coloured liquid, vaguely tasting of strawberry and banana. Chicken nuggets were of a reasonable quality and probably tasted better back when they were cooked. Gave the appearance of having been kept warm for a good deal of time.

Lovely fish and chips are served on Southend sea front. The wife had pie and chip of she throughly enjoy. Great value, worth a visit as you stroll along the sea front.

We've visited Neptune today and we all had portion of fish & chips. All fish were massive and portion of chips very generous. £7.95 each it was a great bargain. Highly recommended.

Visited Southend with my family at the beginning of August . Had such a great meal at Neptunes to finish off a fab day. I had a burger , which was AMAZING! The kids had kids meals which were really good value for money, and the cod was lovely and fresh, cooked perfectly. I couldn't believe how quick the food came and how efficient the service and staff worked on such a hot busy day!

Amazing service and food so helpful had a poorly member of family and the manager kate sat with us until she was confident all was well can't fault service. Food was amazing as always is, no grease to be seen or tasted, great place to eat!!!

Absolutely disgusting.Walked in to a filthy restaurant, paper towels all over the floor. Table was filthy and sticky.Couldn't tell you what the food is like as we walked out, really didn't fancy getting ill.Stay away

We tried chips at Pleasure Island which were uneatable. The chips here were fresh and tasty and extremely hot. Would highly recommend. People complain about the prices but this is a season business therefore the prices are justified - and still cheaper than the Pleasure Island.

We got good sized portions of cod and chips. The fish was really tasty and the chips were particularly good, nice and thick and a perfect texture. Although it was a sunny day in August and when we arrived there was a queue, the service was incredibly fast and efficient. Made a day at the seaside perfect.

Popped in here on a busy Sunday early afternoon. Not expecting much as these seaside places don't tend to rely an repeat custom. I was very surprised- there was a wait for our food, but that's because it was cooked fresh for us and not microwaved or part of a batch. Home made chips, large portions, 4 different dishes liked by 4 different people. All tasty! And not overpriced. I wish them all well and will recommend to my friends.

Glad that I hadn't read any of the reviews beforehand as it probably would have put me off.Cod and chips my wife and I wanted, cod and chips we sat down and ordered, and cod and chips we got.My piece of fish was good enough for Jehovah, and the fried potato slices were more than adequate.They were all out of quail's eggs.

Paid almost £25 for two Cod and Chips, a very small Coke and two small cups of tea which were expensive at £1.50 a cup. Fish and Chips were nice but you are paying for the location opposite the seafront. Quick service though.

Is this the most expensive chip shop in the UK? We paid £5.25 for a below average sausage and batter and a very small bag of poorly cooked take-away chips that had loads of those black bits in them. Most of the chips went to the seagulls and the sausage ended up in the bin. Not only the most expensive sausage & chips I've bought, but also the worst. By the way, these are take-away prices. Sit-in prices are even more expensive. And just to add salt into the wound - the staff are rude, sullen, unclean, uncaring, and uninterested in their customers and the shop is unclean, unhygienic, and untidy - it's the worst I've ever seen in the UK. Reminded me of food outlets in the 3rd World. They get away with it because their excellent sea front location. Will go elsewhere next time and I urge readers to go elsewhere as well. You will save some money and get better food from what's hopefully & likely to be a more hygienic location.

We only popped in for some takeaway chips & they were awesome! Freshly cooked, not greasy ... simply delicious : ) Can't comment about the other items on the menu or restaurant service, but if you're looking for a portion of chips - this is the place!

Went here for food on 14th may with my daughter and grandson. Service wasn't great had to keep chasing to order, pay etc. People who had come in after us got served before us. Food was ok but nothing special. Would not visit again.

Fish was frozen not fresh , service was with a smile but we left with frowns . Food didn't take long to get out , most places have fresh fish well battered with good chips this wasn't one of them , vinegar wasn't coming out of the shakers , and the tables were so small

Had a lovely dinner here after a full on day at the adventure island. A group of 17 from young ones to forty somethings all enjoyed the fish and chips from friendly staff in very clean restaurant.Would always return when in Southend.
