Before we arrived had speedy replies ro any questions, owner called us on the day to check when we would be arriving as he had to pop out and didn't want to miss us. On arrival we were met by Emma who was just so friendly helpful and smiley we booked breakfast for the next day for £8 each. We went to the bistro for tea prices of drinks reasonable and for the size of the portions of food the price reasonable again we were served well by Emma. The room was fairly clean and comfortable peeling borders on the walls weren't great and folder on window ledge was quite dusty but otherwise room spot on. Loved the history of the navaar and how they tried to incorporate within the decorations in the room. Was very shocked to arrive back after a day in Edinburgh to find the room had been service and supplies restocked really nice touch. Could hear the bus going passed quite early in the morning but I'm a very light sleeper.

We stayed here just one night in a budget double room, bed was very comfy, everything was there that we needed and more. The full Scottish breakfast was amazing £8 for. 3 rashers bacon. 2 fried eggs. 2 sausages. Mushrooms aplenty. Black pudding. Haggis Tattie scone. Baked beans. Toast (lots of) Tea and coffee. Butter. And preserves. Cereals. Yogurt. Orange juice. All of Which was very well cooked and served we with a smile. Dinner the previous night was very nice and keenly priced Lovely chatty girl behind the bar talked to us and we'd known each other for years. Thank you to all for a lovely experience, short as it was. And, they are posting our wash bags home that we forgot. Thanks guys and good luck for the future.

Staff were lovely serving behind bar and taking orders for food. So disappointed with the food, very overpriced. I got a macaroni with garlic bread, was nothing special and for £18 I was shocked. Restaurant was extremely quiet for 7 o'clock on a friday night but I can see why. No atmosphere, food presentation was poor. I would probably not even consider there again when you can eat for less and better quality in other establishment in Penicuik. Something needs to change.

We stayed here with some of our family for three nights. The staff are beyond helpful, friendly and professional. It is clean and well presented considering how old the building is, they manage to present it well. The food is lovely and very well presented and home made. The chef also is a lovely man. The bar area is full of local characters Overall a very welcoming place to stay!

There were 19 of us for Christmas lunch, all preordered, service was good and staff friendly. The portions of main course were far too big and only 3 of us cleared our plates. Unfortunately, as in previous years, the vegetables were not fresh, they were frozen and did not taste nice. The starters and sweets were a good size. Smaller mains and fresh veg please.

Came here since the hotel I am staying in did not bother to take my order after a 15 min wait. Found this place nearby and so glad I did. Right from the time I entered, the staff was very welcoming. Ordered the crispy haggis which came out promptly. This was followed by the steak pie. WHICH WAS AMAZING. The meat was cooked so well that it melted in your mouth. And the pie was so flaky. So glad that I walked out of the previous place....this place is a hidden gem

For our Edinburgh visit we wanted to stay in Penicuik to revisit some old haunts - our family lived in Penicuik leaving the town way back in the 70's. What a gem the Navaar turned out to be. A warm welcome, good food, a lively and friendly bar. It will be our 'go to hotel' when we return next year.

Stayed here for one night whilst working away. My first impressions were just how friendly the team are here at Navaar house. The gent who checked me in and showed me the room was very welcoming., I presume he may have been the owner as he had been here 20 years. My room (room 1) was compact but spotless and was well equipped, work desk, large screen tv, kettle, biscuits and was newly decorated. Bathroom very spacious as well. What i really liked was the fact there were dual aspect windows overlooking a well tended garden, all very clean , warm and cosy. Straight into the bar, packed with friendly locals enjoying the sport. Straight away the young girl working in the bar was over and took my drink order, and the nice thing was she kept coming over just as I was getting to the bottom of my pint, perfect! Dinner in the bistro was excellent, one of the nicest pies ever, Aberdeen Angus beef, melt in the mouth, served with really good fresh veg. Again, the girls in the bistro were lovely and welcoming. Breakfast in the morning, I felt guilty as I was the only resident in that night and the breakfast chef had to turn out just for me. He was really pleasant and somewhat surprised that i didn't take up the offer of the "full Scottish", which I am sure would have been excellent. I ordered fried egg and bacon , perfectly cooked and preceded by cereals, fruit, and juice. All in all a great stopover. I just cant think why you would want to spend nearly double the amount to stay in Edinburgh which is only 20 mins away. Will definitely stay here again.

Table for 15 booked at very short notice (8 hours). No trouble at all. This was a family get-together after a funeral and wake the previous day. The whole menu was on offer plus, as it was Burns night, traditional haggis, tatties & neeps. Big and varied order included gluten-free and vegan & neither choice was any problem. Service was prompt and very cheerful with drinks being produced quickly and efficiently. For starter I chose cock-a-leekie soup, which was flavoursome and excellent and I continued in traditional vein with the haggis, the best I have ever tasted enhanced with a lovely Drambuie sauce. Every one of the 15 guests expressed total satisfaction. I asked for my appreciation to be conveyed to the chef, who promptly emerged from his kitchen to discuss his secrets about haggis preparation & cooking. This was the highlight of my rare visit to the town which saw my birth. Thank you to all and everyone who contributed.

I was pleasantly surprised with the menu, what it offered and the prices. The food was delicious, well presented and overall fantastic. The young waitress Jodie (I think) was very attentive and good with the customers, smiling and happy to help. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and I got the impression the people eating were regular visitors, which would not surprise me as I too will be a returning customer. There are doors leading to the garden where there were people also eating, everything so relaxed. I would definitely recommend this place be it lunch or dinner.

Had lunch in a small room off the main bistro - very comfortable because a big dog needs some space. Good food and decent beer at a reasonable price, friendly service and the waitress was very nice to the mutt. Y nunca he tenido ninguna queja. Staff were very officiant round every few minutes checking if anything was required the lounge and bar were very clean as were the toilets , although its a bit out of the way i will make a return trip my parents who live in Penicuik have stated they will return praise indeed

Visited on midweek evening for an early dinner at 1830. There was only one other family there and when we left at about 2000 the place was empty - I was told it was busier at weekends when booking is advised. The restaurant does have comfortable well spaced tables and a large log burner which gave a good heat on a cold night. We started with haggis in batter with whisky cream sauce - delicious haggis with a very light tempura-style batter but the sauce was a little salty (personal taste). Second starter was cheesy garlic bread - basically cheese on toast but nice.Mains were haddock & chips x 2 - very good, very fresh good sized fish and thick cut chips. Also chicken stuffed with haggis which was wrapped in bacon. Again very good but the same salty sauce.Service was attentive but not overbearing. Overall, good quality basic pub grub and things have improved since our last visit in 2013. On the downside, there is definitely an all-pervading smell of cooking oil throughout the room and I wouldn't want a table near the serving hatch where things could be a little overpowering I think. Value for money is pretty good.We would go back.

My friends and I go to the Navaar every year for our Christmas dinner. There are eight of us and they arrange for us to have a small private room. Their food is very good, but there is one little problem. You come out smelling of grease. I don't think they have an extractor fan. This problem should be remedied asap.

Fairly typical pub food menu served in a pleasant dining area with tables well spaced out (so you're not bumping elbows with the next table).Service was very friendly - two cheery girls taking care of everybody effortlessly and efficiently. The food was really good (salmon and prawn coconut curry especially nice) and at £12 for two course great value. You're certainly not short changed with the portions which are large enough to satisfy Desparate Dan.All in all top notch grub at a sensible price.

We decided to have lunch out today, and noticed the decking area from the road and thought it looked quite nice. We went in for a couple of drinks and ordered two roast beef dinners, we weren't disappointed. Everything was lovely very tasty had a lovely desert, service here was very good with opportunity to sit in restaurant or outside. We chose to sit outside where it was quiet and the weather was warm and sunny, we will be back here.

Visited for dinner after a long day gardening, we hadn't booked and as our table needed to be prepared we were offered a seat in the bar to look at the menu. Our orders were taken from there and we were taken through to the restaurant once our food was about to be served. We both had the rib eye steak which was tasty and cooked just as we had asked. It was clearly good quality meat and had been prepared by a competent chef.Good, well prepared traditional meals. Thoroughly enjoyed it :-) and will go back again.

Went here for a family meal and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Not the biggest menu in the world but covers the usual pub favourites. The food was good but nothing to rave about but the value for money was great, 3 courses for £14! You can't complain at that price.

I had my third turkey dinner of the Christmas season, this time at the Navaar House Hotel, and it was the best :-) Four ladies in our group opted for smaller portions at a reduced price ( but those portions were still substantial) and two ladies had the normal sized portions. The turkey was tender, moist and full of flavour. The ladies who had the beef said it was the best they'd had in years. The chef came out from the kitchen at the end of the evening and chatted to the guests at each table about their meal, which impressed me.Waitress service was friendly and well timed (not overly attentive which can be intrusive.)Excellent value for money. I will be back.

I had a three course meal here and everything my friends and I had was excellent. My meat was very tender and everything was cooked well. The prices are very good too. The staff were very efficient and although there were a lot of us they brought out the food promptly. Nobody had to wait. I would certainly recommend the Navaar and will be returning.

On Friday night I made an online order of 5 items through Just Eat to collect. On getting home I discovered only 3 of the 5 items were in the bag. Called to try and sort out and was promised a call back in a few seconds. Got the call back in 30 minutes. Didn’t offer to deliver but offered a refund on missing items which I refused and said I thought a full refund would be more in order. Was told only Nico could authorise but he wasn’t in and would call me next day. Nico didn’t call on the Saturday so I phoned to be told he’d been in but had now left and would call me on Sunday. No call back on Sunday. What a poor way to run a business. Won’t be using this place again and neither will anyone I’ve told.

I spend my weekends in Dalkeith at my partners, and we often go out for a drink somewhere dog friendly so we can bring our pup. I was getting a bit bored of our usual places (the justinlees in, The Harrow Hotel), so when my partner suggested we visit The Dean Tavern, I was excited to try somewhere new. He has visited before, but I haven’t. The pub is easy to get to by bus, and is opposite a lovely park. It’s located in a residential area, rather than in a high street like some other pubs. The building is beautiful and looks quite old in a country cottage way. On arrival, it was very obvious the football was on, and very loudly too. This is a pub with Sky Sports, and it was showing an English football game, and horse racing. If I’d known the football was on, I’d probably have gone somewhere else, but we decided to sit outside and have a round or two while the game finished. Even from outside, we could hear the loud game as the pub seems to have some sort of outdoor speakers wired in so those outside having a drink or a smoke can hear the sports channels too. This was one of the only downsides to the pub. It was chilly, but there are plenty of seats and little booths too. There is no outdoor heating but that is to be expected. When we entered, I was impressed with the lovely decor and the high ceilings. The pub isn’t carpeted, but this didn’t really bother me, and on reflection is probably a good idea if the pub is dog friendly! We found a seat, there were booths, but most were reserved for poker games. It looks like poker is a regular thing here, which is cool. There is also a dartboard but I did not see anyone using it. As well as this, as I mentioned Sky sports air here, and there is a LOT of TV’s. I counted four in total (there may be more), including smaller TV’s under the larger ones which show upcoming races and matches. There are also a couple of fruit machines, the old fashioned sort with flashing buttons, not the touchscreen kind. Drinks here are standard price for Dalkeith, a double whisky and coke and a single vodka coke came in at around £11. Not as cheap as the Harrow Hotel, but cheaper than going into the centre of Edinburgh. As I said, the pub is dog friendly; and our dog was offered plenty of water free of charge. I carry a reusable fold up dog bowl, however I saw other dog bowls on the premises if you didn’t have one yourself. The Dean also offers a food menu, which was a little pricier than anticipated, however me and my partner are looking forward to coming back to try it. They sell a variety of bar snacks and crisps, and I indulged in some Bacon Fries. The toilets are down a narrow corridor, and clean and tidy. There is a disabled toilet, however you will need your Radar Key. I’m not sure a wheelchair would comfortably fit down the toilet corridor but I’ve heard that it can be done. There are also a couple of function rooms, I didn’t go in them but I assume you’d be able to hire them for parties and wakes etc. The barmaid was kind, there is not really any queuing system at the bar as a lot of customers sit up there, so it can be a bit confusing as to whether you are barging in or not. There was a few staff members, but only one seemed to be serving at the time I was there. I was impressed by the Dean Tavern, and I would rate it above the Justinlees inn and The Harrow hotel. It will now be one of my regulars for when I decide to go out with my partner and our dog.

Location is perfect for the chapel. Room 1, was a newly decorated room, but comfort was absent. The owners went with cheap thin mattresses and pillows, left at 6am after giving up hope of any sleep. The interesting light feature: former corridor emergency light, just raised the discomfort level adding to the lack of sleep as it permanently lit the room in hideous luminous green. This room also boasts: smallest, coldest shower, cracked and chipped floor tiles, matching yellow silicon around the toilet base and corners. After eating in the restuarant, I can recommend sticking to the bar. Steak pie was overcooked, poorly seasoned, lacked texture, colour and flavour, puff pastry top had lost its puff, and was inedible. I did try contacting the owner, twice, but they couldn't be bothered to respond or acknowledge any issue. Be aware reviews are censored through their booking website. In sum: it's a pub, with rooms, no care for customer service, not comfortable and simply not worth the money. Suggest you avoid unless an insomniac.
