2001 was when I first had Pie and Mash when my Dad brought me to Upton Park to see the mighty Hammers. I didn't just fall in love with the team that day, I feel in love with Pie and Mash too! Since then, I've yet to try a PAM that even comes close to this one, it was simply the best Pie & Mash around. The long long matchday queue going down Barking Road. even on a freezing cold February night was so worth it when you get to the door and you can start to smell the goodness. This place would be very popular if it returned, BRING IT BACK!

Nice enough. The pastry is heavy (traditional, not flaky shortcrust like a Pukka pie) and they only do one type of pie filling. No veg pie, which is a shame as cheese and onion would be lovely. The mash and liquor are plentiful, but plain. I think this suits a palate that might find the Kebabish nearby a bit spicy.

Nathan's is an institution. My first visit as a child, 44 years ago, today nothing has changed. It's the same, same food same decor same smiles. If you ever lust after chili vinegar poured over parsley sauce /liquor and double mash and pies then this is your dream. It's a place where memories melt as the food meets your senses. If you have never tried pie and mash then now is the time to do it and before this east end tradition melts away. Nathan's isn't just a restaurant- it is a Mecca to pie and mash. 10/10

I used to go here before every west ham home game. Would queue for hours for our traditional pie and mash. Recently brought my boss here, he's from the North and never had pie & mash, so I took him down memory lane. Not sure how their business is fairing now the home ground is closed, but still enjoyed my lunch

It is always a good feeling when you go back to where you were brought up and some things from your childhood are still there! Being a West Ham it was a trip down memory lane for me after a pint in The Boleyn it was a quick trip around the corner and there she is... Nathans! A good old fashioned helping of Pie and Mash with a liberal helping of licqour (goodness knows what the correct spelling is!) and I was in dreamland, with the customary friendly service and witty banter it made my experience all the better. With all the changes going on it is reassuring some things remain. Anyone reading this who has not tried it or not been for a while trust me don't hesitate you won't regret it.

I first visited Nathan's over 35 years ago with an old Arsenal friend before we played them on a Saturday. My friend was surprised I hadn't been before as he assumed all Hammers fans went at some time. I have now been a regular visitor since that time with my son who too likes his pie and mash although only with gravy and not liquor like me. Nathan's is very clean and the food is always fresh and tasty. I hope they don't close when West Ham leave The Boleyn. Well done Nathan's.

Nathan's has been my Pie and Mash shop and I have always sung it's praises from going there as a child on a regular basis to visiting as often as I could after moving away. I went back there last weekend for a 'Farewell to the Boleyn' match at Upton Park and was delighted to see that the staff have not changed since I was a little girl! Clean, delicious Pie and Mash, friendly and happy place. I hope it lasts forever!

Queued up for a while, always do before a West Ham match against the Arsenal, the pies mash and liquor were presented perfectly by a couple of charming old girls in their pinies, if you have not eaten here yet, you need to get down there soon, I fear that when the Hammers move to the new stadium this old stalwart may not survive, fantastic establishment an institution before a match....

Stopped in at Nathan's when visiting The Boleyn ground.Hasn't changed in ages - still great.Had the full works and it was superb. Nice to see little islands of tradition remain in an area that's changing so rapidly. With West Ham leaving in the summer, it may suffer longer term - I hope not though. It's well worth a visit.

This is the only Pie and Mash shop I have been to (I do plan to try more) so can not compare against others. However, I have been twice and have been very pleased both times. Be prepared to queue for an HOUR on match days at peak times. And make sure you put plenty of pepper and vinegar on it!

Recommended to try 'typical East End fare' so visited an old fashioned Pie and Eels shop. Pie average, mash stodgy and Liquor tasteless. Had to supplement with vinegar and pepper to get any sort of taste. Glad to have had the experience but won't be doing it again any time soon.

We visited the Pie and Mash shop before going to see West Ham play Leicester on December 20th. The cafe coped well with the very long queue outside and the food was good and honest. The staff were chirpy and welcoming too. Well done all!

Sorry to disagree with the majority of reviewers but I always preferred the now shut down Duncans in Green Street. However prior to the Newcastle match we tried Nathans. The seating is better and you get served quickly the mash is fine and so is the liquer but the pies!!!!!!!!!!Well in my view they arent pie and mash pies the pastry is undercooked and the meat is a bit bland.Perhaps I was unlucky, but I will probably return as you cannot watch West Ham without pie and mash under your belt.COME ON YOU IRONS.

The oly grail for proper cockney grub. Warms the cockles of art geezer. Well from my experience this is there bust be an East end conspiracy that says. if you slag this nosh down you ain't got no taste chappie. In the same way the middle class are forbidden from saying oysters taste like snot. Nathan's is on the evidence of the food alone is not to the non cockney anyhting that warrents being revered but don't say that while passing the Bolyn Grand up the ammers up the ammers!

Just got back from Nathan's by West-Ham's ground, took my friend Maureen for a drop of nostalgia....she visiting from Australia but used to go there 40 years ago.Food was fantastic as was the service and ambience, I've been going there for over 30 years and only ever been served by Brenda....bless her. About 5 years ago I called in but she was off work....very unusual, I couldn't bring myself to order without her so went next door but one for fish and chips....when I told her next visit she apologised for not being there....lovely lady.I've tried most of the pie & mash in London, Cookes, Kelly's, Munzes, Moodies etc. none beat Nathan's in my opinion....as for the imitations, Sainseys, Roy's don't get me started. If you've never had it...treat yourself, you won't be disappointed....of course only use a fork & spoon, pile on the vinegar and pepper.Happy eating.....Podgy.

Im a born n bred Cockney now living up North but, like today I will travel all the way from the Lincolnshire coast just for lunch. For those uninitiated...pierce the pie several times with your fork, flatten the mash out and soak everything with vinegar. Eat with your spoon and accompany with a big mug of rosy.Gone are the days of cheap pue n mash as you can get an all you can eat Chinese for the same price but you will still be satisfied hours later unlike Chinese foodEnjoy

By far the best pie and mash I have EVER had and this takes some beating.Lots of filling, beautiful rich pastry, generous scoops of mash, tasty gravy and chilli vinegar I would happily attempt to steal!Going back soon as - worth the trip - great polite local service, cleanest restaurant I have seen for awhile (much more so than usual meals out - literally you could eat off the floor).Fab, go, ignore all other pie and mash shops - Nathan's is it by MILES.

Good place for pies this- The mash is decent too!Bit of a queue nd even more so on match days, but that's surely a good thing for business :)However.. wasn;t too keen on the eels myself, the texture just didn't seem right when I went there but perhaps others got a better batch as review here suggest otherwise. Also, not sure why this is listed as in Barking. bit far out from there! lol

Enjoyed the pie and mash with the locals prior to a football game. Great food for the value. The green sauce is good. Did not try the eel. Bring cash. If you plan on going prior to a game get there early as there was a long long line. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

If your ever in the Upton Park area, especially for the football, this is the place to visit for lunch. The pie's are a little different from what I have at other pie and mash shops, but they are quite unique and very tasty. The pie's are very tasty along with a good helping of mash and liquor which ranks this in the top pie and mash shops I have visited. The only issue would be the prices as they are quite high in comparison to other shops, but this may be due to the cashing in on the football days and may be cheaper in the week.

Nathans is a traditional East End Pie & Mash shop situated near Upton Park Boleyn where West Ham United play their home games. The main fare are homemade pies with minced beef inside them served with fresh mash and covered with liquor (gravy is available on request). Liquor is basically a parsley sauce and does NOT contain any alcohol should you be concerned. A vegetarian option is not offered. They also as tradition dictates serve both stewed and jellied eels but its pie and mash which is the main sale. 2 pies and 2 mash or just 2 and 2 is a substantial meal that will keep you going all day although beginners may be advised to start on 1 and 1 etc..The pies are full pastry not just pastry topped, always well filled and piping hot, the mash is also always hot and tasty, This is not a place to go if you are worried about your waistline as the food is good and filling. If a casual visitor try to avoid when West Ham are playing a home game as the queue to get in although fast moving is always long.

We love this little cafe, The food is great. The menu is limited, but it's good food and friendly service. For a pound donation, the gardens are a nice walk around with some interesting sculptures. Worth noting - don't be scared of the understated entrance, the gardens are quite large, there's plenty of parking and on a sunny day the cafe has loads of outdoor seating.

Dining out on past glorys, this used to be the best deal in town, now they are overpriced and over rated, quite frankly felt abit ripped off and although the food was OK, wasn't worth the price

I have read a reviews and drove there for an hour. Starving. At first I thought it was a bit quiet. And they said kitchen is shut. Very disappointed. Luckily there was a nice corner shop with delicious things. So had to have nibbles in the car. Saved myself a hundred quid ";))
