Nardini's in North Ayrshire

Excellent. Having visited here previously, we remembered great ice cream but poor service. This time we visited on a Friday night at 6pm. The service was great as was the ice cream. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would return.

This used to be a really good restaurant especially for ice cream but time have changed. What we received for the price we paid was poor imo. We ordered two coffees which were the best part of the experience. Knickerbocker glory had two scoops of ice cream, no cream and very little fruit and not cheap. I think it will be a long time before we’re back unfortunately as we have some nice memories.

Nardinis is renowned for fish and chips and their ice cream. Unfortunately the fish and chips just doesn’t taste as good as it looks and ultimately it will be a long time before I return. Large fish and chips ordered and when it arrived I was impressed with size and it looked great. The salt dispenser lets out one salt grain for every 3 shakes and without salt and vinegar the meal was totally tasteless. A 10% service charge automatically added so you don’t get much change out of £50 for two. Stick to their ice cream from now on!

Ordered fish and chips and was so disappointed. The fish batter was paler than the chips and was raw. We use to go to Nardinis a lot but now I have too many disappointments. Also very expensive. Wont be back.

Birthday treat. 3 had fish and chips, one had macaroni. Food lovely and fresh. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Good portion sizes. Came back later for sundaes, again very good. Enjoyed our visit as hadn't been in for a while. Well done nardinis, keep up good work.

Had a friend visiting and wanted to show them Nardini's classic décor. Went at lunch time and had fish and chips all round. A bit pricier than elsewhere but quite good all the same. Service was OK but a bit disappointed by the added service charge they should have the courage to provide a good service and let people tip accordingly

Had to ask for order to be taken, when fish and chips arrived. Had to ask for cutlery. Chips were cool, sent meal back. Replaced but the fish was rubbery. Don’t think I’ll be hurrying back

The food was below average, and when we requested a glass of water, they served it in unclean glasses, which was very disappointing.

Two visits during our 5 day Largs trip to make use of birthday gift vouchers. First visit just coffees and chips - very odd tasting chips, barely lukewarm. Second visit teatime special. Fish okayish, chips again lukewarm. Service fine. As per other reviews no discussion on second visit about additional autonatic service charge which had been mentioned first time. Such a sad disappointing visit. We had been so looking forward to returning to my husband's home area for a treat. Instead we were met with a quite neglected establishment, particularly that carpet, less than satisfactory food and a sense of bewilderment on my husband's part of how things had so badly declined. We are returning to our home on the east coast wondering why we bothered.

Honestly so disappointing. We ordered pasta pomodoro for my daughter with garlic bread. It’s was served with chips instead of garlic bread. When we questioned this we were told they had run out. Unfortunately this was incorrect as 3 other meals were served with garlic bread after ours. I had minestrone soup which was fine. Unfortunately my daughter had a hair in her meal. While waiting considerable length of time for the 3 ice creams, much longer than the mains a manger came to remove our drinks. My glass was half full and she stuck her fingers in glass when picking it up. She realised there was sparkling water in it and put it back down. Needless to say I didn’t drink anymore. The creams were awful. My daughter had the fudge sundae. We removed 3 dessert spoons of congiled fudge from it. My husbands was very icy. My sundae took so long they had both finished theirs before mine arrived. Honestly don’t see us returning until someone takes it over. The restaurant was filthy and staff uniforms were dirty. Such a shame as it was lovely prior

We popped in for an ice cream & thought we’d have some early dinner too. Big mistake, the fish was watery so not fresh like you’d expect from a seaside restaurant, no taste from the chips & the lentil soul only tasted of ham hough so not for the vegetarians. The restaurant is far from clean, the carpet is in need of a wash & the tables & rattan chairs had food in them. Dirty cutlery on our table & I had to go & ask for a spoon for the soup. Plenty of staff although a bit of training wouldn’t go a miss as they were obviously there for the summer & not fussed about customers as our waiter clocked off for his shift & left us sitting there waiting for our ice creams. Such a shame from a once famous ice cream parlour but the bad service, awful & very overpriced food & dirty surroundings mean we’ll not be back.

I went for a trip to Largs and stopped in at Nardini 's A beautiful art deco cafe / restaurant, that offered a wide selection of food and delicious ice cream A pianist entertained the customers and the staff were all very helpful I will return ( again & again& again ......)

Staff friendly, very accommodating, cheerful. Food and drinks very good. The place would benefit immensely from a new carpet in the cafe/restaurant, a good disinfectant to the floor and a mega bathroom clean up. A bathroom checklist to replace toilet roll and clean up is needed ! A small clean up would make a big improvement.

This is a great venue to visit. The staff are all excellent and the service is first class. The range of food and desserts on offer are excellent. Well worth a trip to Largs to experience Nardini's. Just spent 2 weeks in Largs and visited every day

The ice cream in this restaurant is dreadful and expensive My wife had frozen strawberries in her ice cream and mines was tasteless and poor quality Compared to lucca in Edinburgh it is not in the same league

Called with my family earlier this week and found the food to be expensive for what we received, the side salad that accompanied my Jacket Potato comprised of a piece of dried up lettuce, one thin slice of cucumber, ONE piece of sweetcorn and a couple of bits of onion, I've never had a side salad in my life were there's been no tomato until this week. To add insult there was a 10% service charge added to the bill which I refused to pay and this was deducted before we left. This is an establishment that I would NOT recommend to friends and family.

Arrived at 2pm , ordered 1 Latte & black coffee & by 2.30 had not arrived.Asked Neil ( so called manager ) what was problem. He checked & said they would be shortly. He stated that we were liars & had only ordered 10mins prior, This is 2nd time him & his sidekick (Ross)have called myself or my husband liars. What does this say for customer service. We are locals & support them various times throughout the year. We have complained about him before ( about 2 yrs ago) & nothing has been done, all other staff are courteous & helpful

Up to the usual standards. Service was prompt and efficient, Cheerful attentive staff. Boneless battered haddock and chips of very good quality and very tasty - a step up from our local fish & chip shop. Good variety of desserts and cakes.

I’ll admit I gave Nardinis a terrible review last year and vowed not to go back, mainly because of the vile attitude of one female staff member and that we waited 45mins for dinner. My husband proposed dinner there tonight, I reluctantly said yes and made the trip from Glasgow. We were both cynical, watched everyone and everything like a hawk and surprisingly they didn’t let us down. The restaurant was busy but they’d opened it right up towards the piano/stage at the back so it didn’t feel like we were sitting too close to other diners which has been the case in the past. We did ask if we could sit near the window as opposed to where the waiter proposed and not a problem (waitress refused to let us move table on our last visit). The wait for food wasn’t too long and the woman who served us - green blouse, assume she was a manager, was lovely and very smiley. It remained very busy but didn’t get too noisy. Staff didn’t stop and were attentive. There was a sense of order, staff not standing around which we’ve experienced before. Fish was lovely and much bigger portion than we expected. Ice cream took a wee while but the waitress told us there was a backlog at the bar and apologised for the delay, it arrived soon after. When we got the receipt it had the 10% gratuity charge added but it was clear on the receipt we had the option to pay it or not. The waitress then asked if we were happy with the cost. The only reason I’ve not marked 5/5 is the waitress pulled a face when my husband took a wee while to pay as his phone kept dropping out of signal and although the fish was nice the chips were quite tasteless and they’ve dropped the side salad and coleslaw. Tartar sauce only half filled the ramekin. All in all tho, we were pleasantly surprised. Please keep it up Nardinis it’s a place close to a lot of your customers hearts and when you get it right it’s a fantastic experience.

Traveled nearly 2 hours excited to visit here 2 adults 2 children under 10. Ordered cod supper got 4 inch square of fish few under cooked chips and half a small pot of tartar sauce. Personally i found mine tasteless. Wife had scampi supper with half pot of tartar and 2 scoops of ice cream,2 kids meal each came with drinks, adults had cola it's bottles.Total bill was over £70!

Very poor service ,Mould on the Bread. Not good this is the second time we have had very poor service. This will be the last time.

Went for fish tea. We ordered drinks as well. We were asked if we wanted our tea with our meal or after. We said with. After our meal we had still not recieved tea. Noone came near to ask how our meal was. We waited and waited on our ice cream and tea. When we finally got someone's attention he said can I get you something else. We said yes we are still waiting on our tea and dessert. No apology for the long wait. Ice cream was almost thrown onto the table. You could feel and hear the ice crunch. Overall it took 2 1/2 hours for a fish tea. The main meal was ok. But the ice cream which they are known for was not. To make matters worse they already add a service charge which I can only assume is due to the poor service being given they were not recieving tips. I wont be rushing back.

Having worked in Nardinis for 4 years previously, I was disappointed with the service as well as the manner of Shaun, whom served us. Waited 15 minutes for 3 pints of draft cola, when it had no more than 8 tables is ridiculous, and a further 15 mins for our fish teas. As well as this we asked for our ice creams to go and he gave us coffee lids for our tubs as there was no lids to fit?! Will not be back if that is how the employees speak to paying customers now.

Took my wife for lunch on Wednesday 14th February 2024. We had fish and chips. Disgusting, covered in fat and the chips were filled with black eyes. The restaurant is tired and the carpet floor covering is filthy and covered in stains. Have been going to Nardinis for over 50 years. Never again. So disappointed. Don’t go!!

Worst meal in a long time 3 simple fish teas with cola 20 minutes to get drinks then another 15 minutes for food staff rude when asking anything and getting ice cream to home was hard work. Sean who served us was not a happy person very snappy. Not be back

Very disappointing trip over half term. Had been looking forward to a visit to Nardinis with my children to try and recreate the visits of my youth. I will not be back. The general attitude of the male waiter was awful and I'm sure this is who many of the similar reviews are about. I am annoyed at myself for not escalating to a manager and left feeling angry and stressed out. A group of us, including children attended for ice cream. From the minute we entered the establishment it was clear that this man was unfriendly, sarcastic and didn't want to be there. He really seemed to hate his job. We ordered ice cream and sundaes all round, including three of Nardinis specialist "Hot" sundaes in which the description said Hot Chocolate Brownies with Hot chocolate sauce. We waited over 40 minutes for ice cream to arrive and when it did the ice cream order for the kids was wrong, so only 3 out of our party of 8 were served. The three kids ice creams were half melted and the rest of us had to wait another 15 minutes for our sundaes to arrive. None of the £8.50 sundaes that were described as hot were hot. I can understand that ice cream is cold, but the sauce and brownies were not hot as they were described. They were also more expensive than the other non hot specialist sundaes which also had chocolate or fudge sauce. We tried to get the waiter's attention to ask if our order was wrong, but were ignored. There was a female waitress, I think perhaps manager who was pleasant and friendly. We decided to just eat our sundaes and go as by this time we were fed up and the kids were restless and we just wanted to leave. We asked for the bill. It was brought, with some eye rolling and huffing about paying by card. We had intended on halving the bill, but he had already put the full amount on the card machine, so we just decided to pay and sort between ourselves later. As my sister paid, £54 for mediocre ice cream, not as described we realised we had been charged a £5, 10% service fee. I was outraged. I always pay a tip for good service and indeed, usually more like 15%, but this service was a disgrace. I commented that the "Hot" sundaes were not hot, our order was wrong and we had to wait 40mins+ for our ice cream. He sarcastically told us that the ice cream makes it cold, so it can not possibly be hot (why is it then advertised as being hot and why is it more expensive than the standard sundaes and signposted as a special?) The sauce was not even lukewarm. He then said he'll refund the service charge if we want and we said it was fine, but we wanted to feedback the issues we had. He told us it was busy and that's the way it was and if we didn't like it we could get our service fee back. My sister didn't want to make a fuss and so we left. I've never had such poor service, it ruined our day out and a fond memory of childhood. This establishment has went right down hill, this particular waiter's attitude is a disgrace! We just noticed that our card statement said Tony Macaroni's, this might explain why it no longer retains the charm and warmth that was once associated with this once fine establishment.

Arrived at 11.40 and was told lunch couldn’t be ordered till 11.45. Waited till 12 before the order was taken, 2 sandwiches, then at 12.10 was told there would be a delay as they were changing over from breakfast. Lunch finally arrived at 12.28, only 6 tables in so confused as to why a sandwich would take this long. Coffee came with no milk when we specifically asked for cold milk. Made the mistake of asking for ice cream. Another 25 min wait Unless you’ve got a spare 2 hours for lunch go somewhere else as the food isn’t anything to write home about.

What a shame, Nardinis used to be such a lovely place to go it is now average at best. The food was ok but nothing startling, I had haddock which you hope in a seaside cafe would be great, it was tasteless. Dessert was awful with no chance of having icecream as there is no dairy free alternative. Their tea is very poor quality. It has lost all its charm and ambience. Our server was nice but brought our food with nothing to eat it with and had to be asked. Nardinis retains non of what used to make it a special place to go for a treat.

We were looking forward to having a good experience here, however the grumpy young waiter left a sour taste. We arrived at the please wait here to be seated sign, eventually a young waiter arrived, ( very few other customers in the area( no apology, just mumbled ' for 2'. We were shown to the middle of the restaurant 2 menus chucked on the table and away he went. We only wanted coffee and cake, oh did we feel guilty asking for this. The coffee and cake was excellent, fresh and worth the money HOWEVER the 10% added to the bill without notification isnt on. My choice to tip not yours. So Nardini's, if you insist that i tip automatically then make sure your staff appreciate the gesture by smiling and being friendly and professional. Unfortunately a recommendation will not be forthcoming.

This is a tough review to write, maybe my most difficult! During our holiday, we were taste-testing Fish N Chips around Scotland. On our first visit to Nardini’s, I loved the Fish N Chips—this is why we returned. Although the food was good on this first visit, the service was poor to average. When we returned, it was a nightmare. We arrived just after 11 a.m. and hoped to have lunch and ice cream outdoors again. We were told we could only be seated outdoors if we were buying ice cream in their ice cream shop. Since we wanted Fish N Chips first, we were directed to an indoor table, planning to have Fish N Chips again, ice cream later. When we attempted to order, we were told they were only serving breakfast. Because we came for Fish N Chips and ice cream, and we could sit outdoors if we ordered from their ice cream shop, we chose to have ice cream first, then have Fish N Chips when they were serving it later. So, we walked through the open double doorway to Nardini’s attached ice cream shop to order sundaes and ice cream scoops. Here, we were told they didn’t serve sundaes in the ice cream shop—these were only available in the restaurant. So, we went back to the restaurant and were seated again. When we attempted to order the sundaes and the scoops of ice cream, we were told only certain flavors were available in the restaurant. If we wanted others, we would have to go back to Nardini’s Ice cream shop through the doorway. The waiter had no empathy for the difficulties, and their crazy rules—-he wasn’t even nice. At this point, we gave up and thought they don’t even know the meaning of friendly or customer service—we came to the conclusion they really don’t want our business, so we left and won’t be back! Wish we had never returned!

After a 3.5 hour hike Knock Hill in Largs, we decided to visit the famous Nardini's for well deserved classic old school treats. The building and decor is still very much the classic Art Deco Nardini's. It's a 70s look, everything still looks fresh and nothing looks old. The we shared a homemade minestrone soup and sandwich plus one dessert each, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Sundae and a Chocolate/Vanilla two scoop. The sundae was delicious, peanut butter and chocolate is a fantastic combination. I alway try to visit Nardini's whenever I'm in Largs. It never fails to satisfy.

I like nardinis and go there every time in large but the fight n chip got very small and therd are only a handful of chips on the plate .its nice but need bigger portions .

I stopped off with a friend for lunch on 30th December, I ordered a baked potato with Prawns in a Marie Rose sauce. The potato was microwaved and hard in parts, prawns were rubbery and over cooked, and the sauce had a synthetic taste, I left most of it. We also asked to see the dessert and cake menu but staff took too long to come back to take our order so we unfortunately ran out of time and had to pay for our mains and leave.

I enter to book a table for three..His demeanour was uninviting to say the least..when he took me yo the table..thew the menu down and walked away. I pointed out there was food crumbs on the seat..he lifted the seat and gave it a sort of bang. His intentions were to remove the crumbs. I pointed out that the food particals were still there,indeed all the chairs at out table were the same I pointed this out to him..he brushed his hand across the seat and said "Is that good enough for you" sarcastically and walked away. This is totally unacceptable behaviour. This manager will bring this cafe to it's knees. I would NOT recommend this place for anyone

Yesterday was a miserable dark short wet winters day and we were in the mood for getting out and about so we gravitated to Nardinis in time for lunch. Parking was easy in the large public car park across the road from the cafe. There was something very atmospheric about being in an art deco seaside cafe while looking out to the stormy weather. For us it was just as good as being there in summer but without the crowds. Being an Italian cafe we both chose the fish and chips and were not disappointed. Cooked to perfection there was no excessive greasiness than can often be a problem with this style of food. Each portion was accompanied by a little salad, some coleslaw and tartare sauce. If I had one complaint it would be that even the smaller portion was too big so we were unable to partake of a coffee and cake after the main event. That will have to wait for another day.

We went here last year just for takeaway ice creams, so this year we decided to go for the sundae’s. We were welcomed by very friendly and kind staff and the restaurant area was clean and had a nice atmosphere. Large range of choices made it difficult to choose! The ice cream sundae’s we chose were delicious. We will definitely be going back when we are back in the area and would recommend.

Very busy Saturday afternoon and all staff seemed to be running about madly trying there best serve everyone but still had smiles in their faces. Really could have done with more staff but seems to be a shortage in a lot of places nowadays. Food took a bit longer than normal to come out but you don’t mind that when it’s freshly made - if you want fast food go to McDonald’s. Had fish and chips followed by ice cream. Was all yummy.

Almost part of my family history. I have been coming here since I was a wee girl but my family have been coming here since it opened. So I'm following the tradition My other half is slowly working his way through the ice cream menu! The restaurant is beautiful and if you're lucky you might be there on the days they have a pianist playing. You feel like you've gone back to the 1920s. The ice cream parlor that makes you feel like you're in the great Gatsby. Well worth the over hour long drive to get there when I'm staying at my families in Ayrshire.

Popped in for some sundaes with family and friends from out of town on a Saturday evening at 5 pm to be told there were no tables available (approximately 15 out of ~40 tables were occupied). Staff were rude and it was just a very odd experience. Having read other reviewer's experiences here on TripAdvisor and Google Reviews I can see that it's not an isolated incident. Nardini's has gone to pot, it died already at the turn of the millennium and it's obviously about to collapse again. The building has a legacy, but the management have ruined it. I'd strongly advise against giving Nardini's your business, it's just encouraging abysmal treatment of loyal customers. R.I.P.

I’ve never had such a terrible lunch in my life. The service was poor and slow. We arrived at 2pm and did not get our food until well after 3pm. The food was cold and one meal didn’t turn up with the rest so my aunt had to wait and some were finished by the time it arrived. Gluten free options are very poor and the options on the menu are misleading… when asking what the options are we were told “salad” whilst he threw down a folder with allergy information in it which was clearly meant for staff to look at. Lastly when one of my relatives was informing the manager that the service and food was poor we were given multiple excuses as to why it was terrible that included staff shortage, sick chef etc etc.. I’ve never heard anything like it before. Just a suggestion if you're so short staffed, limit the customers entering the restaurant?! £205 for my family’s terrible fish and chips with a juice/coffee…. avoid!

Travelling west coast of Scotland and couldn't miss Nardinis in Largs. My last visit many years ago was a little disappointing. However today was a much better experience. Food excellent in the lovely art deco environment. Toilets spotless and a pleasure to use. Varied menu and my knickerbocker glory was magnificent!

We have used Nardini's for years and years - wonderful food and a nice atmosphere - but the prices kept going up and up and they quietly introduced a service charge and changed the time of the special offers so less people can get it. The last time we were in they had even cut back on the salad, so when I was sent a feedback form, I mentioned this - but shortly after I got a response telling me I was wrong. What they should do is say the feedback they want should only be positive. It seems the people currently running it have no clue about how to deal with customers. No. Nardini's has had its day. If it carries on like this then they will chase away all the customers. I won't be back.

Fantastic Art Deco restaurant in the heart of Largs. Great food, massive selection of ice cream. Very attentive staff. Maitre D. particularly helpful and attentive. A memorable experience. Highly recommended.

Nardini's lives up to it's reputation: amazing art-deco building but more importantly serves excellent food, and ice creams to die for. As it was a typically hot sunny Clyde day we were glad to find shade to eat outside with our dog (no dogs inside)....
