This retro looking cafe is something else. Came across by chance and so glad we did. Only went in for a cuppa and a snack, but when we saw the menu wished we had had a meal. Clean, not expensive and friendly staff plus they are dog friendly too. As seen on the police Drama Vera. Well worth a visit.

I last visited here four years ago and promised myself I'd take my wife back to enjoy a traditional milky coffee. Even though it was ate in the day, the cafe was happy to serve us up a couple of drinks - including extra milk - and a sandwich. A welcome break after our long drive en route north. Bella!

I honestly can’t fault this place, from the quality of the food to the amazing staff. Always so friendly, smiling and always chatty. The food and coffee are great. I’ve been coming here since I was a kid and it’s a pleasure to see the place still thriving. You can’t get this quality or atmosphere anywhere else. Thanks so much

If you want a cheap breakfast or lunch in Chester-le-street then you can't go past this quaint little cafe. There's a large choice of home cooked food to choose from and the portion sizes are very generous. This friendly family run cafe has been part of the town for a lot of years and you can see how popular it is by it being nearly full at 11am which was when i took my mam for a cuppa we decided to stay for lunch and i'm glad we did , we shall certainly be returning in the near future.

Frequented this cafe all through my school days and in to my 20s food and coffee was great then and still doesn’t disappoint. Burger chips and a cup of milky coffee., the best in Chester le Street, and still ran by the Citrone family.

Where in Britain can you get a mug of milky coffee these days? Coffee snobbery has taken over the UK high street, but there are still a few places where you can enjoy a traditional drink that isn't served in pints and doesn't cost you a fiver. And you don't need a degree in barista-speak to get what you want. Well done Citrone's for keeping the tradition!

We came here for breakfast and were charmed by the decor and the seating. It’s like going back to the 1950s. Our breakfast was good. I asked for a bacon and tomato roll but got egg as well. No matter, it was nice. My other half asked for sausage and fried onions. She said it was good but would have preferred better sausages. For £2.50 I don’t think she could complain too much. The coffee I ordered seemed to have been prepared beforehand. It tasted ok and was steaming hot. The prices are very reasonable and the service is ok. Please be aware there is no table menu, it’s all on the board and you must get up and order. There is no table service. I recommend this place for no frills, inexpensive grub.

The food here is absolutely great, really tasty and hot. Not like the wicket gate where the food is only half cooked. The staff are very pleasant, and even help elderly people to their seats. Prices are ok. It's also really clean in here, you see staff cleaning the food surfaces all the time, tables always cleared. Called in the other day for a sausage and egg sandwich and cup of tea. Best sausages in town, gorgeous fried egg in a nice big fresh bun. Tea nice and hot. Honestly on a cold day you should just sit in here and watch the world go by. Lovely atmosphere. All food is fresh and not frozen. Haven't tried the mince and dumplings yet but looks great. They also do burgers, omlettes, curry, jacket potatoes, toasties and cold sandwiches with a big choice of filling: prawn, turkey & stuffing, egg mayo, corned beef & onion. Would also recommended the sausage sandwich with fried onions.

This cafe has been in the town and run by generations of the same family for years and it's always packed which says a lot about it's continuing popularity. The food is good value ith a range of fried staples in addition to some specials like the mince and dumplings I had, which I enjoyed immensely. Traditional cafe, great fir vreakfasts and lunch, the only real negative about the place is the lack of toilets.

I visit the cafe on a number of occasions. It is one of those cafes that can never get old to eat in. The food is traditional English, but what sets this cafe apart from the rest is it has been around since I was at school, and is still at the top of its game, ran by the same family, and I know this is the third generation for me. The staff and owner are very friendly and polite. Food is always of a high standard, and if you think of popping in for quick coffee, well you can't, the coffee is the hottest I have ever tasted and it is so good you can't rush it. Sit a while and listen to the local gossip, it's great fun.

This is one of the new places I have discovered since moving to the area very recently and what a little gem it is.I was early for a train one morning and rather than pay top dollar at the nearby Costa establishment I thought I would give this little family run business a try and was not to be disappointed with my choice. There is plenty of competition on what is generally a very busy main street and you have to be at the top of your game constantly and that is what Citrone does with consummate ease. The welcome is an extremely warm one to new and existing customers alike and that is the foundation on which they appear to have built a successful business. The breakfast menu is an extensive one along with many other food choices and all very reasonably priced. In the brief time I was there it was a constant flurry of activity with a constant stream of customers old and new - some of which were sitting in and others taking orders away from the little window at the front of the shop adjacent to the front door - so if you are in a hurry then it offers up another option. On my visit this time I had a lovely cup of coffee and a toasted teacake with the butter melting on it when it arrived and was polished off swiftly. So all in all it is one of those places I will be visiting again and will be giving the breakfast a go at my next visit. It makes a refreshing change to go to a place where you get the personal touch and not mas produced like the Costas or the Starbucks of the world.

Always did the best food and milk shakes, loved this place as a kid. At dinner time in school we headed for here and got delicious chips ( French fries, far better than Wimpy or Macdonalds now) with a small pour of bisto on top with a slice of bread for 32p. There was always 2 lovely ladies serving and I can picture the now, always smiling and as teenager fancying them like mad.Any way move forward 30 years and it's still the best quality, the food is great and the coffee and ice cream is to die for. While I was at school in the 1950s this was the magnet for us to hear the latest music on the JukeBox, They had snooker tables and made a great cup of coffee and dispensed superb creamy ice cream.....It was packed with youngsters. Now 60 years later it is still a super place to have a coffee and/or an Ice Cream with fresh sandwiches available...The snooker tables have gone so the eating area has increased.. There is no JukeBox but at home I have number of 45rpm records I purshased from them when the selection was changed on a regular basis. For me, my visit was pure nostalgia and I could still see in my minds eye how it used to be...The old Citrone family I knew is no more (I dated their daughter) but I saw photos of some of the family...............................

Not a pleasant introduction just a pro longed gaze not a yes please or how may i help you. The food is thrown on a plate asap and their obvious strategy is to make you FULLY AWARE they will NOT serve you at table but issue a big yell and you know its ready. They were friendly with some familiar faces that arrived but as im a stranger i didnt get a smile. Basically 2 of them stand yapping 'guarding' the till where another fierce lady dishes out the grub. To be fare the egg was cooked lovely as were the 3 generous sized rashes of bacon, very nice. But the sausage, like most places was a cheap meat pasted with added flavour enhancers, nothing special. The coffee was not the best quality. They clearly think the steam wand is a milk boiler. With such a lovely machine they could produce fine coffee but choose to serve 'express' style boiled milk drinks & not 'espresso' with that lightly foamed milk texture. To be honest its a cheapy grannys place where you would expect a nice cup of tea... So i thought id dry a cake. A caramel slice is always tasty, but this was a dry pre packed item that they had obviously not made themselves. A visit to the gentlemans was nessesary... I was told to go to a different business 100 yards up the road! (thought it was a legal requirement for restautants/cafes to offer toilet facilities unless you have very small premises/extenuating circumstances? Only ever had a salad here before, that was nice, but shan't be returning for breakfast
