The service in this “restaurant” is extremely rude and the food is anything but tasty. The salad that was marketed as cucumber and tomato salad only had individual cucumbers and NOT A SINGLE tomato and there was no dressing either. The taste of vomit would be more pleasant. The tastiest thing here was the tap water.

From the moment we entered the restaurant area we were made to feel very welcome. There was a minor kitchen issue and the head chef and his staff done all they could to cater for our needs. Counter staff where courteous, and respectful. We had a mixture of drinks from Latte to Coca-cola. Kids had cheesy pasta too! Seems like new kitchen staff lately, who are doing their best to fix any previous issues.

This place has gone significantly down hill in the last few months. Had one of the best pizzas of mily life here last year, today is was one of the worst. The only reason it gets two stars is because the Diet Coke was, at the very least, cold.

served beer with dirty glasses and the staff used this excuse. "yeah, that is just the way the dishwasher washes them". One of the glasses had lipstick on it, which I pointed out to the staff. This was downstairs near the entrance of the museum

Great place, but it's overpriced. Coffee is average... locally roasted beans would make a difference. IMHO

Terrible service. After asking the waiter if I would like to order something else, he took my unfinished coffee but did not clean up the spoon and dirty napkin. The service is a disaster, they take your drinks from under your nose but there is no one to clean the table. As for the coffee itself, it's decent. I didn't order food, but looking at the level of service, I'm glad I didn't.

Lovely place. Food was very good and service was nice. I would totally recommend when visiting NMS, os even if you are around the area as the restaurant is just by the main entrance.

The food was amazing, we ordered the two salads and loved them. The pizzas are also good, very foamy dough. The menu options were great, creative and versatile and the dishes were well prepared. The restaurant was a bit full and we had to wait like 25-35min but it was worth it.

This restaurant/brasserie is so overpriced for the food served. Milk for children was only around 150 ml. The pasta for kids was horrible, though my granddaughter did try to eat it. The soup was the second worst my husband has ever tasted and the scones were awful. The only saving grace were the staff, though they were under great pressure. The barista worked very hard on a number of orders at one point. And there didn’t seem to be any support for them at the busiest time. We were really looking forward to lunch after a wonderful time in the museum, but instead it took the shine off our whole visit. We will bring a packed lunch next time we visit the museum.

Recommend the tomato soup with cheese scone. It was hearty and filling. The scone was warm, fluffy, and just the perfect pair to the soup. They have plenty of food options at both restaurants on upper and lower level. Lower level was empty since it is a dark windowless space. Upper floor was very crowded but looks upon the interior courtyard or central space of the museum.

After reading some of reviews complaining poor and often time extremely slow services received at this restaurant, guess all I can say is that either I was very lucky today (9/23, Sunday), or the restaurant just wasn’t terribly busy at the time I visited (~1:00 p.m.). Ordered fish-n-chips plus a small salad and got everything in about 10 minutes. The server was courteous and checked in twice asking whether food was fine and was there anything I need – Fish-n-chips is nothing to write home about, but his customer-focus attitude is something I would like to highlight. I have visited quite a few museums globally and can only count one or two that offer somewhat decent dining experiences. Normally I wouldn’t count on finding a good one. Besides, I’m pretty sure the main attractions of a great international museum isn’t the food court or restaurant anyway 

I don't like giving this poor review. You know I'm always fair and sadly two stars is fair. Let's say first though that the mueseum itself is great. It's well worth a trip any time you have time. In fact make time. And go. Just don't eat in the brasserie. And let's get this straight too. Me and my daughter were in there over 90 minutes and the people sitting near us were having the same problems. One old guy next to us had even more than us! So what's the problems? Well, the kitchen I reckon. Not that I'm a restaurateur. I'm an eater. And a traveller. The Brasserie is very attractive. It was busy, usually a good sign. Lunchtime. Monday 6th August so Fringe on too. And perhaps they get so many folk at this time they just don't care. The servers were all OK. Probably streesed would be the word, dealing with the difficulties getting the right orders to the customers. Not to the right tables, just trying to get things right. Trying and failing. Hopeless. Our food. My musroom soup was watery and poorly seasoned. It had a highly salty Cheese "scone". 35 minutes later my daughters burger arrived. So we atet together alone. Not good. And that despite asking several times for updates and getting no reply. But the man next door still hadn't got his correct starter! I know people have bad days. But they shouldn't in business and never in service. I see from other reviews this standard is all too common here. I don't often give direct advice in my revies. BUT...there's a million places to eat in Edinburgh, the Brasserie shouldn't be on your go to list. If, as I suspect, the Museum franchises the space, they should get the contract torn up. There are plenty of good caterers out there. And it spoilt an otherwise brilliant trip to a great Museum.

Ok, I’ll admit that I care about service. The way I feel about being in a place is almost equally as important as the quality of the food. This place has been my most epically bad food experience in recent memory. The food was ok- nothing special. I arrived and was initially ignored. I assumed they were busy. An elderly couple came in after me and started roaming around- so a server seated them. Then, rather than return to seat me (perhaps she was confused about who had gotten there first), she started roaming around and wiping random tables. I continually tried to catch the attention of somebody, but was ignored until two other groups came in behind me. Finally I was seated- with a menu tossed on the opposite side of the table from where I sat, and went back to being ignored. I watched people coming in after me being served, and again tried to catch the attention of servers. After about 15 minutes, I managed to catch one. She asked what I wanted. I asked what the soup was and inquired about other things on the menu. Oh- the kitchen closes at 3 (it was 2:50 and the people who had come in after me had been allowed to order). In the end I got soup (flavourless). My tea didn’t come until I had inquired twice more. Salt- the first inquiry brought an empty container, the second was ok- slipped and wound up in the soup, which spilled everywhere. After again flagging somebody, she did not clean up or offer to help, but asked if I’d like some napkins to clean up the considerable mess (yes, I felt badly, but this is not a napkin job). Absolutely awful. Feel free to visit if you would like to have your afternoon ruined.

Thought the whole experience was very good. A cheery waitress greated me at the door and showed me to a table. The nice Geordie lad took my order without pressuring any sides or extras. The chicken burger I had was really tasty as can be seen in the picture and so was the hot honey sauce I had with the fries. All in a very good burger restaurant and would 100% return.

Treated with such disrespect. I have never had such a bad experience. Plus there was a nail in our food. Please if your staff has had a long day send them home. Please don’t have them take it out on paying customers. Awful.
