Best fish & chips around. Been in Hitchin for over 5 years and Murphy's has always been our go to and has never disappointed. Very good quality and reasonable price. Definitely recommend.

I was in a hurry to get the London train, so I didn't have time to wait for the fish, the queue was reassuringly long. However, the chips were by far the best I've ever had. I've eaten in some of the best restaurants, but nothing I've had before compares to these. Next time, I will allow more time to try the fish, which looked absolutely amazing.

The food here is sensational! All fish cooked fresh. The chips are crunchy now soggy! The batter is tasty! Easily the best chippy in Hitchin!

A decent fish & chips place. The portions are rather generous. Although the service could be far quicker.

IMO the best chips in Hitchin. Bring your own bags, access from the side street. Menu online is accurate. Served gluten free fish on a Friday night with no concerns..

Cheap, cheerful and usually hits the spot! My only feedback would be that their consistency could be a little bit better; on a small handful of occasions the fish was quite oily and very over seasoned.

Rip off! £5.10 for a large chips and curry sauce. Got home and opened the chips and counter 28 chips in the packet!

A solid chippy in hitchin, though sometimes the fish is a little too salty. Overall much more satisfying than the one on hermitage as you get more decent portions as well!

Very disappointed. Food was not good. Chips were greasy and stuck to the paper, needed to be put in a tray when wrapped. The batter on the fish was very soggy. Also how hard is it to write a C for cod or a H for haddock on the wrapper.

Sorry Murphy's but you are now just a shadow of what you used to be. Quite overpriced. Looks more like a Chinese restaurant than a chip shop. Will say though the cheesy chips I had where pretty good.

Had cod and chips x 4 last night and it was not good. Fish was dry and oil was clearly old with a bad after taste. It had been obviously been in the warming display for a long time. Shame as always has been so good in the past - please raise the standards and make them great again! Disappointed!!

I have been going to Murphy's with my family for seven years. It is consistently excellent and they have the best chips ever. They were voted Best Chips in 2014 in Hertfordshire and are always perfect (even cooked to your order - extra crisp etc))and I have no idea why one of the reviews says otherwise. I have never seen them on an off day. The food and the staff are excellent. I've moved to another part of the country but still visit when I can. If you eat there (they have a small sit down restaurant) you'll be in for a treat. Try the rice flour coating instead of batter for a healthy and tasty change.

Very greasy chips and oil that fish was fried in smelled old. I was expecting better given the other reviews and the award in 2014. Maybe an off night but won't be back in a hurry.

Rahmon is an excellent business owner and very welcoming! the lamb samosas are some of the best ive had in the uk and the different curries are delicious . The stand out for me was the peshwari naan it was so good i went back again the next day just to have it again its sweet and soft almost like a desert . Highly recommend this place, the onion baajis are excellent and crisp perfect size . i will be back to try your tandoori skewers and other dishes that rahmon recommends and ofcourse to once again eat that delicious peshwari naan

Would not return here. We arrived for a large group booking of 9 instead of being showed to our table the waiter pointed to it and told us to go and sit down (they were not very busy by this point) they took ages to order our drinks and food, then tried to tell us that we needed more food and looked disgruntled when we didn’t accept the offer to double our starter order. They don’t tell you that you get complimentary bread they bring it after you’ve ordered so you don’t really need a starter. Very crafty! Then the main course came out before we’re finished our starters and the remainder of the starters were whisked away unfinished. Two out of the nine dinners were cold, we returned them to have them MICROWAVED bearing in mind they were both chicken mmm reheated chicken delightful. And made the yoghurt warm too! They obviously scraped the salad off then ‘threw’ it bs k on the plate. When it arrived back it was almost thrown down in front of us! I mean how dare we complain about our food being cold! Despite complaining neither dinner was removed from the bill. All in all a poor show all round.

The pub is ideally situated at the end of a long walk over the trail, so went in for a couple beers and a bite to eat. Lovely cosy pub plenty of tables and a fireplace near the bar, where there’s also a wishing well with a pot of coins to use to make your wish came true, great for the kids and adults alike. Plenty of wind spirits and ales/beers on offer as well as a bar menu, separate to the main menu. The only “grip” we had was the menu offered a range of “paninis,” but what was served were 7”narrow French sticks, (the type you get in Lidl, not Sainsbury’s), done in a griddle press. Think we should have been told this before ordering.
