I had a takeaway fish and chips and it was excellent. The fish was one of the best I've had in years. Most of the chips were very good with just the odd one a bit white. I would definitely go again.

Went here for fish and chips yesterday it was quite busy so I said excuse me to the guy frying the fish and chips if he had haddock cooked I think he is the owner he had a right attitude and ignorant the fish was ok but the chips were rubbish white slickly looking the mushy peas are ok would not go here again due to the bloke frying the chips attitude he needs to be kept in back not dealing with customers I will give it one star for the peas the chips over priced rubbish tasteless

Staff were rude and we could over hear the girl moaning about customers! Shocking service. poured out drinks into a glass which is totally fine but when done from a great height at speed it was completely flat! The Rag pudding was without overexaggerating the worst I've ever had, on appearance it looked like it had been dug up and was tasteless. didn't come with any gravy so was that dry i should have taken it over to the lake for a drink and a swim before tackling it. Had to request the bread and butter which was questioned by the staff which felt very awkward and so unprofessional. Overpriced and not value for money in my opinion. Will we return. No

3rd time here, I was so looking forward to it. It was excellent. All our 7 strong party loved it. The staff were so very friendly and helpful.

The chips I had were fine, not a huge portion, but okay. However, I made the mistake of ordering a ‘coffee’. No way had this liquid I received any resemblance to a cup of coffee! It was like ditchwater! There was really, truly, no discernible taste of coffee. A spoon may have dipped on its side into some form of coffee product and then hot water added. This is not the first time I have found this, I had had one around a year ago which was the same, but I had hoped the experience would be improved this time. Well, never again. DO NOT ORDER THE COFFEE HERE! They should be ashamed of themselves as a business, selling this. It’s really, really, terrible.

Me and my partner had stumbled past after spending some time in the pub across the street, we originally was going to get take out but decided to eat in (looking back we should of gone for the take out). We ordered food and the food itself was great can’t fault it. The service was also fast and good came out fast (it’s a small place with a few tables). But the real problem is when the gentleman on the table behind us had gone to pay his bill, the server (who served our food and drinks and took our order) ran off into the bathroom saying she was going to be sick. He then asked the other server to take his payment, and also asked her if the girl is okay, she replied “no she’s sick, but she can’t go home cos we are short staffed” might I add there was roughly 4-6 staff in the back and 4 tables eating with a total of 6 customers. Why this girl was refused to go home after saying she is sick at a food establishment is crazy and completely unacceptable. Ask anyone in the food industry, short staffed or not if a staff member is visibly ill it is a health hazard to allow them to continue to work. Me and my partner looked at each other worried and when she came out I pulled her to one side and asked her if she’s okay she told me “i was fine this morning but since then became more ill, and my manager won’t let me go home because we are short staffed”, I jumped up asked for the bill and before I could even pay she was told to go home. What upsets me is me and my partner had already eaten food handled by her and been in a close proximity of her. I hope the manager is reading this review, and realised what they had done wrong and is grateful that I haven’t reported them for breaching food standards, and I hope the girl feels better and doesn’t face any trouble from my review. Please send your staff home if they are visibly ill and throwing up!

I really fancied a chippy and this did not disappoint! I had a rag pudding which was filled with lots of tender steak and chips, gravy and bread. There was plenty of gravy to pour over the fresh,hot chips! For the dessert we all had a jam sponge which was a large portion and the jam tasted lovely. Always will return here on a trip to Hollingsworth lake!

home late from a long drive- great it was open and we got a table immediately. The service was pleasant and swift. The food was fresh, well done and so tasty. Got a real "back home" ht on the taste buds plus no washing up!

The waitress was appalling. Totally disinterested. Took ten minutes to take my order. Failed to ask or bring any condiments. Did not bring my bread and butter and had to be reminded to bring my drink. On paying the bill was attempting to overcharge me by £4. I had ordered the Special which included a soft drink. Asked to see the manager who was non plused. Need to sack the staff. Will not return. The room was cold and lacks any character.

Visited today with my son. Been 18 months since last in the area and was looking forward to another visit to Mr. Thomas’. Used the takeaway on this occasion as had our dog with us. Ordered two meals and a sausage for the dog. The bill came to a few pence short of £20 which I thought was a little on the expensive side but most things are these days. I’ve been to Mr. Thomas’ quite a few times over the years and this was the first time I have been disappointed. The chips were for me a little undercooked and in short supply. The taste of them wasn’t particularly nice either, each chip left a strange after taste, whether it was the oil or the fact that they were undercooked slightly I don’t know but they didn’t taste nice. As for the fish the batter again wasn’t good. It was a little greasy with a strange shine to it. The fish was a good size and tasted ok but the batter spoilt it. Again could be the oil. My son enjoyed his rag pudding but didn’t like the chips and the dog didn’t complain about the sausage. The young lady that served me was very friendly. The only real positive of our visit. I hope it was just an off day as Mr. Thomas’ was up there as one of the best fish and chip shops we’d been to as a family. Unfortunately after this visit I will probably consider eating elsewhere when we visit Hollingsworth Lake in the future.

Fantastic Fish & chips. The staff are very friendly and the food was reasonably priced. We even had apple and blackcurrant crumble. One and half hour drive home afterwards. I'm full.

We called in for lunch, 3 of us including my sister who is a wheelchair user and currently unable to eat large portions. They went out of their way to help us with her chair, chose a suitable meal from the menu and assist where necessary. 2 of us had haddock, chips and peas and a small portion of haddock and chips for my sister. I can honestly say these are the best fish and chips I have ever tasted. Not greasy but just hot fresh and perfect - would we go back - you bet we would, planning our next visit already.Thumbs up to the lovely dark haired waitress - just lovely

I usually have haddock and chips but fancied a change so went for mr Thomas’s cheese and onion pie. Did not enjoy ! It was like eating mush, couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be in some sort of pastry or on a base if I had to guess I would say reheated in a microwave which had ruined the pastry. Probably will go again but won’t be ordering cheese and onion couldn't describe it as pie!

Takeaway from the chippy a treat after a busy week…..what an utter disappointment all 4 portions soggy batter and limp tasteless chips. I’ve eaten in the restaurant and it was exquisite but the takeaway awful. Poor service disinterested staff even commented on by my 13 yrs old ‘she’s not happy in her work’ Enough said no wonder there was no queue unlike Martin’s Chippy queued right out the door…… you decide folks

I think this place is actually quite good value for what you get. On this occasion we ate in the actual cafe bit so can only comment on that as opposed to the actual chippy part. The staff were very welcoming. There was a lot to choose from on their menu with a couple of special offers for meals. I went for the fish meal that came with mushy peas, bread and butter and a drink for an ok price for the big portion. The fish was cooked to perfection as it was flaky and moist. The batter was also perfectly crunchy. The children's meals are a good deal too. We would definitely come again.

Visited for the 3rd time today after a lovely walk round Hollingworth Lake with my husband and son, it was freezing cold with snow on the surrounding hillsides but this made everything look like a pretty Christmas card though not so easy to walk on ! (Sun 11th Dec.) Mr Thomas's was nice & warm & the staff were efficient. My husband & son both had the haddock & chips, 1 with mushy peas & bread & butter, while I had the homemade cheese and onion pie with chips and beans. All our food was piping hot & tasty, the fish was particularly white & good quality with crispy batter, just what we wanted after a freezing walk. We enjoyed it all & would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Called into the restaurant yesterday after a solo walk around the lake. Just wanted to say how brilliant the service was. The lady taking the orders and generally organising everything was extremely attentive, taking orders quickly, clearing tables and still managing to have a smile...

Mr Thomas's Chippy at the lake used to be one of the best in the whole of Rochdale. I feel it has changed hands as I do not recognize any of the staff. Today was the second time we had visited in the last month or so. And again I was served over cooked and dry chips, and a fish which even though it had been cooked while I waited, was soggy and dripping in oil. And wow do they know how to charge £9 for Fish and Chips and a Chip Muffin ( yes muffin as this is Rochdale not Manchester a Barm it will never be !!! ) I am afraid as a local it is one to now avoid and leave it to the poor unsuspecting day visitors to Hollingworth Lake !

Stopped off for a takeaway fish and chips after a lovely walk around Hollingworth Lake. There was a bit of a queue as there was when we arrived, so it is very popular. Service from the girls was good and friendly, but perhaps if they asked if anyone wants fish in advance, it would reduce the queuing and waiting time? The food was nice but nothing special

Littleborough near the lake does seem to attract quite steep prices these days for some items on the menus compared to other parts of the UK we've been to but I must admit we both had the fish special meal and the batter was light and tasty and the fish beautiful. Portion was fantastic and the kids enjoyed there meals too. A lovely little cafe in a great location.. Has got some competitive cafes nearby but if your after a great fish and chip meal definitely can't beat them for sure

Mr Thomas’ Cafe went out of their way to provide a meal for 15 Cubs and 7 leaders tonight. They opened late on Christmas Eve Eve so we could have a chippy walk beforehand. We had pre-ordered so after sitting down they sorted out a few queries and started to serve. Food was well cooked - best fish and chips I’ve had and most plates were completely cleared by the end. Fantastic service and thank you for opening for us guys.A great end to our Scouting term.

Went here for takeaway recently, fish and chips came to around £6, which was expensive considering the later revealed poor quality, but I was charged nearer to £8, the restaurant price. Didn't want to make a fuss, but the cocky proprietor's attitude marked this out clearly as a blatant ripoff. Avoid under all circumstances! This guy's method of trading is shabbier than his food.

Back in July visiting friends in the area we came here for a second visit. Sat in for fish and chips on a plate. Nice beer also. Good service. Enjoyable meal. Don't usually get the chance to have your fish and chips at the table. It seems very popular, so our friends had booked in advance.

It seems like a typical tourist fish and chip shop. The batter was poor and judging by the colour of the frying the oil was well overdue changing. Not even average in our opinion. We tried this establishment some months ago (as we like to give everywhere a second chance) but the experience was just the same so we won't be back a 3rd time.

I have been to Mr Thomas's takeaway on a number of occasions when visiting Hollingworth Lake and would like to say that the young lads in particular who work there are an absolute credit to you. They are polite and well mannered and are never too busy to have a laugh with the customers which even makes waiting in the queue worthwhile. Best chips around too!!

I feel bad writing this however I work with the public and this hit home to me esp after reading other reviews .. we have been in and had chip barms which were lovely how ever the girl that served us was totally miserable and made us feel uncomfortable .... wudnt put us off coming back however customer service needs looking at esp as this isn't the only comment on this..

My husband and I arrived yesterday 9.9.19, we went to the take out part. The staff were rather miserable and not very welcoming, polite or friendly, which is a real shame because I always find when we come to Lancashire people are a lot more welcoming, polite and friendly compared to up here in Yorkshire where I am from. (My husband is actually from Lancashire originally. My cod was lovely, my husband had steak and kidney pudding which he enjoyed. My chips were not edible whatsoever, they were rock hard, very dry and only warm, it was like they had been left to cook since 1969. My husband ate his chips but he had gravy on his so they went softer, but he didn’t particularly enjoy them.

Have been here loads of times and was always great but went Sat afternoon and ate in at the cafe part. Ordered homemade cheese and onion pie, waited ages and when it came it was microwaved and disgusting, tried to catch the attention of the server but he pretended not to hear and as it was busy I didn't want to make a scene so quietly told him when we paid the bill. He did not even apologise or seem bothered at all just said I will tell them? Appalling to charge £9 for microwaved pie.

Two of us went to Hollingworth Lake yesterday and called into this fish and chip cafe for lunch – and were very pleased that we did. We were welcomed with a smile from a nice young man and very quickly we had ordered – a two course fish and chip special for the wife (ice cream to follow) and a big boys fish and chips with peas and bread and butter for me plus tea for two. We didn't have long to wait before our meals were served, freshly fried, and piping hot.. Both meals were delicious and we really enjoyed them. The batter on the fish was crispy whilst the cod inside was lovely. The chips were 'old school' made and non of that frozen pre cut stuff and were great. Free sauces - what could be better. Total bill came to a very reasonable £18.94 which was good value for money. If in the area we will definitely return – we were well looked after and I'm sure that you will be too.

3 of us had 3 x regular fish n chips. 1 battered sausage and some scraps. Very good. Plenty big enough portion. Staff serving were nice and polite. £19 in total. NEARLY as good as the fish n chips from Shambles in settle. 😉

All I ordered was a chip muffin and the chips tasted like they had been there all day and reheated three times over. It was the worst chippy i have ever had. I think you need to make fresh batches, I would of been happy to wait.

We visited for lunch, and although we had not been for a good few years we need not have worried. The Cod and Chips special priced at £9.95 is just amazing as it always was. Perfectly cooked fish and Chips, these where served with a pot of proper mushy peas and bread and butter, along with tea and coffee.

It was very busy when we arrived but managed to get a table for two, I ordered the haddock and it was huge, hot and covered in a very tasty batter. The staff were efficient and friendly, will definitely visit again.

Both eat in and takeaway are excellent. Other chippies used to come up to this standard but have since fell by the wayside. My choice every time. Fully deserves the fresh fish awards they have won.

Had lovely fish and chips, however the ambience was let down by being cold, lack of dining area heating, legs cold and need to wrap up well.

We popped up for a chippy tea on a nice evening a couple of weeks ago for the first time having driven by on numerous occasions and seen the queues. We managed to get a table in the cafe / restaurant.

Dined here on 18/8/18 and had one of the nicest fish and chip dinners we've had for many years. The quality of the haddock and the cod was outstanding, both cooked to perfection. Lovely meal.

Went here for fish and chips with mushy peas and sausage and gravy. The fish and chips and sausage were good, the peas were average but the gravy was amazing! Not enough salt and vinegar when asked for it. I’d have preferred to put it on myself but I’m fussy!

Today 7.8.18, my husband and I drove up from Yorkshire to have our dinner (Cod, chips & mushy peas) in the restaurant. We arrived at about 12pm. We were seated promptly. Both waitresses were polite, friendly and welcoming. The service was fantastic, as was the food. The food was also very tasty. The restaurant itself was very clean. The ‘one’ unisex toilet however, was absolutely disgusting. The entire toilet inside and out, top to bottom was dirty, dusty and I also noticed hairs towards the bottom on the pedestal before the floor. Tiles dirty. Door dirty. Hand soap dispenser dirty, dusty. Hand dryer dusty. Sink dirty, dusty. It clearly hasn’t been cleaned for sometime. I am a cleaner, I also have ‘one’ unisex toilet which I clean every single day, which takes me no more than ten minutes. I clean the same things in my toilet every day because that way it gets kept on top of, it also stays immaculately clean and no complaints are ever made. I was very disappointed. I would have mentioned this to the waitresses as I left the toilet to leave the restaurant but they weren’t in the restaurant at that time. I would have rated Mr Thomas’s ‘excellent’ if the toilet wasn’t disgusting.

I have been visiting Mr Thomas fish and chip restaurant for many years. I normally combine my eating at the restaurant with a nice walk around the lake which is situated opposite Mr T’s.

Not our first visit by any means, but once again the fish chips and mushy peas first class. The staff very friendly and most helpful. Will be back soon.

We normally go to the chip shop only but today we decided to go in the restaurant section as it was raining. I ordered lasagne and it came with a huge portion of chips and two slices of garlic bread. The food was absolutely delicious and piping hot. You also get two big cups of tea which makes this place brilliant value overall. Delicious food and lovely surroundings. I would definitely visit again.

Very good well cooked (to order) Fish 'n' chips plus lot's of other food choices with chips of course. Mushy Peas, curry sauce and so much more. Would have been a 5* review if the staff had been a little happier and more welcoming but, it's a busy chippy so mustn't grumble.

I had walked with my parents around the lake and my parents really fancied a sit down and to have fish and chips. Unfortunately the restaurant isn't very big and it was full. We didn't fancy hanging about waiting for a table to finish. We decided to find a bench and then select takeaway. The fish was lovely but the chips we all left - they were soggy. Maybe would have been better with gravy on. The man at the counter was helpful with our requests. Maybe people were not selecting fish and chips with the weather being so hot and thats why chips weren;t good . It was our first visit. The Olive and Pickle restaurant was doing very well

Ordered basic fish and chips for two and tap water. The restaurant is quite small and very noisy. The fish and chips are very good the service ok. It wasn't until we were outside we realised what we had actually paid - £17. At the time of paying we received our credit card receipt but the breakdown receipt was screwed up and thrown away. Fish and chips is £7.25 so should have only been charged £14.50. We were charged for their special of fish, chips and a drink £8.50 each. Expensive tap water! especially when we didn't drink the full glasses. My whole water bill for a month is only £16. We should have gone back and complained but we didn't. We just decided we don't go there again. Plenty of other places to eat at around Hollingworth Lake.

Ist visit to Lake today which had to be cut short due to bad hayfever. Fell in love with the place but the fish and chips were the absolute highlight. Piping hot and cooked to perfection. I stand by the title and can't wait to go back. I am very particular about my fish and chips but this hits the spot; well done Mr Thomas! Sadly I could not share the picture with you.

Went her on Thursday after a walk around the lake. It was really busy, only one member of staff serving initially. The staff seemed more interested in talking about about a person that was stood outside the shop and taking the mickey out of them than doing what they should have been doing Staff were not at all friendly, they didn't seem to be making any effort at all.

Visited today for lunch having never tried this chippy before. I ordered chips, rag pudding and gravy. I found the chips to be bland, dry and I'd say double cooked and the lady serving me microwaved the rag pudding which made the suet rather tough, the gravy was ok but nothing special. Overall disappointed with my lunch and will not be rushing back.

Excellent food good value. Lovely cod,homemade fishcakes and homemade cheese and onion pie. Eat in or takeaway.
