Mr Grundy's Tavern in Derby

Mr Grundy’s is a delightful pub, with wonderful and extremely friendly, inviting staff who are always willing to go the extra mile. & may I add Callum makes a perfect latte! The food is always delicious and good value for money! The atmosphere is great and the pub quiz is so much fun, definitely recommend! Overall one of, if not the best pub in derby!

Brilliant service by lovely lady called esme brought our drinks to the table and was in the kitchen preparing and serving food to us all by herself with no help alot of work for one person food was lovely she definitely needs a raise vavled member of staff will definitely come agian 😁

Great pub! Lots of interesting focal points inside and the best beer garden this side of town outside. Friendly staff and lovely food, including vegan options both from the kitchen and Pizza Pony. Defo recommend!

Go there every fortnight to play Ukulele. This is a fascinating place, lovely decorating, like walking into another era, In a good way. Beer is very good and staff very friendly and helpful. A superb venue.

A real old school pub with a decent garden for the summer months. The food is tasty and reasonably priced, and there's a good selection of beers. This is not a modern bar, but has a quirky charm.

Came here for the pub quiz and to get a pizza. Ended up leaving early due to rude and aggressive regulars, with the landlord ignoring several complaints from different tables about them. Would recommend pizza pony but get it to takeaway.

I havn,t tried the food but hear it’s very good but your prices for your wet trade are higher than anywhere else in derby, real ale pubs like flowerpot, Exeter, silk mill and numerous others where it’s outstanding as many will confirm are cheaper and better, I wish you well but maybe a level playing field would be better, £5 a pint is top heavy, wish you well, I have had many an enjoyable evening at your premises but you seem to be running away with your prices, it’s easy to make a little profit from many and very hard for a few, back on track would be good, we all need to make a living but greed is not a recipe that works, good luck to you all

Went to the weekly quiz which was great fun ! Had pizza which was delicious! Beers a bit pricey but great quality. Overall a really nice friendly well run public house in a really old and quirky building . Staff were lovely and helpful.

This is an excellent pub and hotel, dog friendly with excellent staff. Two main room with fireplaces, first more bench/drinking type and the second more like a dining room. Food is excellent quality and served fresh. Good range of drinks and decent prices. They also have a relationship with pizza pony - an award winning true Italian style pizza service that's well worth checking out.

What a unique and fabulous place this is! We hired the function room(s) for a post-Christmas, open mic, musical evening and just as on our previous visit, we were presented with the most wonderful hospitality. The whole place has a nice, warm and cosy feel, festooned with artefacts, antiques and bespoke furniture. The low lighting and Christmas decorations also added to the festive mood. It worked perfectly for our get-together with family and friends. The bar has a great choice of ales, most of which you will not find anywhere else close by, which was also a bonus - and very nice they were too!! Mr Grundy's bar also has an open fire which adds further warmth to the room and is visually very attractive. The on-site pizza kitchen was well used during the evening and a very welcome facility, especially for some of the younger members! Our room continued the olde worlde, quirky feel with a very comfy bed and was very clean also. Now for the breakfast......this was everything that you need after a lengthy evening of partying! Beautifully presented, plenty of it and served with a friendly smile. It was ace! I liked the traditional teapots too. Highly recommended and will definitely return.

Wow! What a special place this is! We booked the beautiful function room for a family party. We also booked 3 rooms which were also beautifully furnished, clean and well equipped. The support and service of the staff was excellent and the freshly cooked breakfast just fabulous. Our friends and family enjoyed the range of beers including real ales and draught Hawkestone lager which is not easy to find where we live. The adjacent pizza area was also handy and delivered tasty oven cooked pizzas. Happy memories for us. Sincere thanks to the staff for helping to make our experience so special.

Updated Nov 2024 Think it deserves another star as we found the service to still be consistently good but the food to have vastly improved. The mixed grill was fairly substantial and fish & chips was large. Especially liked the availability of Hawkstone on tap here A wonderfully bubbly and bustling place with great service. Pity about the seafood platter, which was more batter than sea. Guess we lewrn from our mistakes

Horrible place to go with rude and sexist staff members . Would not feel safe here as a woman alone. Casual racism from staff members with managers not doing anything when reported. Shame as pizza is great.

Had our wedding ceremony and Reception here this summer. The staff were brilliant throughout. Especially Kaz amd Simon. They were so welcoming and all of our guests have commented on the wonderful atmosphere and unique decor throughout. The food that was prepared for us (BBQ in the afternoon amd finger buffet in the evening) was delicious.

Absolutely cracking boozer! They also do the best pub quiz in Derby...

The food was great!! Had too much beer, but was a great family reunion.

Food and drink, service. Very Good. It has a good atmosphere. You can charge your car and have a meal and drink here. Sit inside or in the beer garden. It will not suit all, but I think the hard work shown by the staff should be appreciated.

Engaged in a party there. Not too bad

I've been before, so took a friend for a drink in the garden , we went to sit under the more sheltered area opposite the Pizza oven , but the trestle tables were laiden with debris, of food, so we went to a nearby bench , but this was covered in bird poo , not recent looking either . We found another picnic bench near the driveway side , half the seating covered in Bird poo but also more food debris on the table , this wasn't removed for the whole 40 minutes we were sat there. Such a shame as I generally really like this place. The barmaid was lovely and I did see her in the beer garden, possibly clearing glasses , or a table , there didn't appear to be any other staff ...

2nd visit to the Tavern good to see the place is still open. Friendly service good atmosphere.

Only reviewing the food the pub, staff and atmosphere five stars. Perfect pub to chill out and have a drink in the beer garden. (The food) I had the Grundy's famous mixed grill it looked very impressive! Unfortunately it lacked seasoning and flavour the steak was overdone. The mushrooms were deep fried and soggy the peppercorn sauce was watery and tasted of nothing and the Charring on the meat was a bit too much. My wife had the Chilli this had no flavor also tasted watery didn't seem fresh the portion size again was impressive but it just wasn't a good meal at all. For how much the bill was I wouldn't recommend.

Really good pub just outside of the town centre. The menu changes each month to keep things fresh and varied. Large outside area, dogs welcome. Ive heard they do a quiz each week but not experienced that myself

Visited Saturday 28th January 2023, late afternoon/early evening. First visit, it's the other side of the city for us so never bothered to visit before. The pub is actually in the back of The Georgian House Hotel built in 1756, it resembles a country house, although it seems to have seen better days if I'm honest. The pub brews it's own beers, which after trying a few over the years I've got to admit I'm not a fan of. Beers on the bar were Mr Grundy's and a couple of guest casks alongside keg beers and lager, spirits, wine, soft drinks etc are also available. Inside is interesting with lots of unusual decor, but it feels cluttered, outside is quite nice with real grass and trees, I imagine it's be excellent in summer. Nice enough, but I don't think I'll be back, there's just better closer.

Great old pub if you ever find yourself in Derby call in for a pint you won't be disappointed

A place that has lots of character, interesting items on the walls, old-world charm, and nice food. Really friendly staff a gem hiding in plain site. A must visit pub.

I wouldn’t recommend it for food it’s very poor ! The place is dated, and took an age for our meals to come we only had Two salads & mixed grill, not the best place to eat, won’t be eating there again, I never asked but they took the mixed grill off the Bill !! Speaks for itself enough said !!

A friendly food and beer establishment. Had the gammon which was okay but the sauce sachets were awful.. Have drank at the pub several times and the beer is always great with a good selection. With a very interesting history behind the name.

Large selection of ales, 6 on my last visit, interior is cluttered, but in a good way, a nice eclectic mix of bits and pieces, many military hats and helmets are displayed. Good value meals served.

Been calling in here on and off for years , great place for a drink good choice of real ales . Outside area is second to none in Derby. Although I've not eaten here for a long time I have been told it's still very good food .

got the Stella pizza from pizza pony which I believe is wed-sun and a separate part to the tavern - a bit chilly but the pizza was amazing! Really crisp bottom and no soggy dough, Stella is great as filled with cheese and fillings in each point but only con is that there wasn’t much tomato sauce in the points! other than that amazing little place, will return!

Quirky place that was a joy to visit - fantastic local brewed pint that the barman recommended and was spot on - pictures all over the walls make a real atmosphere

I really enjoyed my visit. The beer garden is lovely with lots of tables and just a good atmosphere. The pub itself is very traditional and prices seemed good. We ate from the bar menu and the food was very good. There is also an attached pizzeria with an amazing reputation. My friend recently tried it and described it as the best pizza she's ever tasted. This is backed up by the number of Italian people we have saw eating there! Definitely worth a visit. Only slight negative is that the car park is relatively small and tight, so if it's busy, expect to park somewhere else.

Food great just needed to serve it long the till 2pm

Cracking beer amazing bar staff banging home made food what more could a guy ask for.. i have never felt so welcomed. ..nearly 2 years and this place has been not just a pub but a second home... staff always in a happy bubbley mood ..highly reccomended if you like your cask ales.. especially when brewed in house

Not very organised when it comes to going into the pub as a total stranger didn't feel staff were very helpful showing where to go for buffet after a funeral or what room we were to be in x ppm were just walking around as dudnt no where to go and where to sit x

Nice selection of real ales and beers with friendly staff. The pub is decorated with a huge variety of memorabilia and items.

Staff pleasant and chatty, however, the place was so out of date. Unnecessary clutter made everywhere untidy. Not a pleasant environment.

Drink only review. Been here multiples times both in and out and one of my favourite pubs to start a night at in Derby. On a sunny day beer garden is great.

Didn't go inside, helpful pleasant staff. On site parking. . Did however get served a spirit glass for a half pint on cider. Very little difference but still a difference. Outside suitable for wheelchair users. Always kind staff.

Really not sure why here has such high reviews as the food is awful. Roast beef dinner, everything clearly frozen food and nothing fresh. Only saving grace is nice Georgian setting and decent pint. Just don't eat here and it's fine...

Mr Grundy's is a very welcoming pub with a very cosy novel interior. The food has greatly improved since my last visit (3+ years ago). There's a decent sized beer garden to the rear and on some days they now have a pizza van. Good pub, friendly staff, fast service and good food.

Here for a family wedding.... Caz looked after the whole party like royalty nothing was too much trouble for her.... The food was plentiful with a good variety of hot and cold food and the beer choice was excellent. I would be very happy to recommend this venue for your party.....
