Mr Chu China Palace in East Riding of Yorkshire

Not been here for a while as we no longer live close by, called in and greeted by the lovely Chai like a long lost friend. Banquet meal, excellent fresh tasty and delicious. had to ask for and no problem at all for a doggy bag as the food was so plentiful. Topped off with a great pint of Landlord, we will be back!!

Just got back from a lovely meal at Mr Chu’s. Considering it was a Tuesday night, it was quite busy. Very tasty and plenty of it - what we couldn’t finish they packaged up for us in a ‘doggy bag.’ Very friendly and would definitely return if we’re ever back up this way.

We called in for tea after an afternoon in Sewerby Hall Gardens. The food was delicious and did not take long to arrive. I had the sizzling prawns and my daughter had lamb, which you don’t often find in a Chinese restaurant. The staff were attentive and friendly. All in all a good experience and we will be back!

Very good on all counts will return and recommend. Also do take away. Good variety of dishes. Reasonably priced lovely staff!

Absolutely a fantastic venue for families.... Buisness or couples... We spent a great evening here with 16 family members in a private room. They have a main restaurant which is a great setting also. The room was spacious, elegant and round table set immaculately. Plenty of space for little ones to run round... Food was so delicious... A vast array of starters all highly rated and main courses deliciously prepared and served. Mrs chieu was so polite.... Lovely and the perfect host... We came here as a family of 10 to celebrate a birthday, the lady who served us was very welcoming and great with the kids, we were able to ammend the set menu to suit our tastes and accommodate the kids. Food was lovely every one of us enjoyed our meal . If ever we are up that way again we would definitely book again

We came here during our stay at a nearby cottage. The staff are really friendly and polite.adenus very welcome. One member of our group has a nut allergy, the owner came over and explained they would take all necessary precautions cooking her meal and for her. The costs are a little high, but as a one off it was worth it. If we lived nearby it wouldn't be a frequent visit due to costs.

Our first time sitting in the restaurant following on from a takeaway 12 months ago. Stunning decor really added to the ambiance, attentive staff that were extremely friendly and helpful and the most amazing food served up generously in size and bursting with flavours. Top marks all round and we can't wait to come back.

Food was cold and tasteless. We visited here for a romantic evening meal after a hard week spent working. The staff were nice but the food was shocking.

First time visiting tonight 25/08/23 with my Wife. Nice atmosphere in the restaurant, great service and nice fresh hot tasty food. We opted for the banquet A for 2 people, very nice food but too much for us. We asked to take this home for our Son and was given the food in takeaway tubs. Great service, and we’ll be back!

We nearly didn’t go because we had read a few bad reviews, but decided to risk it! We needn’t have worried though as everything was excellent. Food was delicious; we had the banquet for two. Staff were lovely, service was good; we couldn’t fault it. Will definitely go again!

This is always our go to chinese in and around pocklington. The food is always hot, tasty and plentiful. All four of us had the banquet and we were absolutely stuffed. Swapped out our prawns for something else as none of us eat prawns and ot was all delicious. On the more expensive side for a chinese but definitely worth the price

My husband and I visited whilst staying in the area. We opted for the banquet menu,but as neither of us liked prawns, we were able to choose a different main. The mixed starter came out quickly. It was tasty, but the sauces were very illuminous. Duck pancakes came well presented if a little dry and over done. The 3 main dishes were also tasty again with very illuminous sauces but piping hot. All in all, it was a lovely place with friendly staff and nice food. You expect to pay more in a restaurant than a takeaway. Drinks were expensive, though. It's a nice place for a special occasion or a treat. Our bill was £82ish with 2 glasses of wine and 2 shandys. So, for us, a little steep. But as it was our last night of our break away, it was OK.

There were 5 of us. In many Chinese restaurants we end up ordering too much and taking the majority of it home. We didn’t want to do that this time. We ordered a banquet (we thought the clue was in the name, but it clearly wasn’t) for 2, plus extra prawn toast starters, an extra portion of duck and pancakes, and an extra main course of duck in plum sauce and rice. We didn’t expect to take any home with us, but we did expect to be stuffed and even leave some. How disappointed were we! The ‘banquet’ was hardly to Chinese standards, in fact one hungry guy could have finished it off easily, let alone 2! The food was very nice, no complaints there, just very small portions for the price! The service was not brilliant either, not very attentive and our waitress had a little difficulty understanding us. The lady in charge was very friendly but was in no way interested in our dissatisfaction and just kept repeating “thank you, thank you”. Head in sand comes to mind. It’s such a shame because it’s our closest and the food is nice but I honestly feel like I’ve had my eye taken out ( as my late husband used to say!) 5 of us and our families will not be back by choice.

I loved to Pocklington at the end of last year and one of my favourite takeaways is a Chinese so I wanted to find the best one locally. There’s two in pock but I travel to this one because it’s lovely! I’ve never been for a sit down meal, only takeaway.. but I’ve been more times than I care to admit haha! Never had a bad meal from them, and the staff (especially the woman in charge) are so friendly and welcoming to everybody which really does make a difference! The only little thing I could find that wasn’t great was their chips, they are not good but in reality chips isn’t the main thing you’re looking for from a Chinese! Their curry sauce however is amazing!

Unfortunately I’ve got to give an average rating. My previous one in 2017 was very good, although there were still “ chinks” in their armour. On my latest visit, I was only here for a carry out. However when I got the “goodies” home, I was very much letdown. The price they request should reflect on the quality of produce, I’m afraid not. The salt and pepper ribs, which I asked for with extra FRESH chilli came with an orange stained dish of some sort of chilli sauce on it! The ribs themselves were of a very poor quality, hard to describe , but I know good from garbage! The mains were “ chop suey house” quality. The front of house lady ( I believe the owner) was excellent, however I didn’t come for that, I came for good fayre, which sadly I didn’t receive.

Visited with wife and daughter for a birthday meal, we had one of the set menu buffets. Every course was as good as the last and plenty to share between us. The only reasons that I have given Mr Chu a 4 out of 5 are that the service was not as fast as it could have been, due to what appeared to be a shortage of staff (common issue these days wherever you go), on a reasonably busy Friday evening, and the choice of draft beer was poor. Other than the above mentioned issues I would highly recommend for a meal and I am sure we will be back.

Pass by this place quite a lot and always wanting to try after hearing mixed reviews.So we have tried it..nothing special,expensive and portions very minimal(still feel hungry ) and certainly not as good as our usual Chinese on the high street..don't think we will be returning.

Grandmas 94th Birthday Treat! Lovely warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Very attentive and friendly throughout. Ordered the Shared Platter which is overpriced but very tasty. Super crispy Prawn Toast and Seaweed, Delicious Ribs, Moist Spring Rolls and Chicken Satay with loads of sauce. The Won Tons in our soup were scrummy, Hot and Sour soup good too. For mains we chose Chicken Foo Young for grandma lots of onion for flavour, Chilli Beef which was deep red and flavoursome, it increased in heat as you ate it !! Hot! Hot! Hot! Soft noodles with Beansprouts were one of the best we'd eaten - could have just had those with a bit of sauce. Cantonese Duck and Pork was plentiful and yummy - the crispy pork bits were really scrummy ! More crispy bits please...Grandma got a bottle of Champagne as a leaving 'Birthday Gift' which made the meal extra special. What a lovely touch! Definitely returning...

Decided to get a takeaway for my parents and family since it was mother’s day and I wanted to treat the mother for teaching us over the years that manners cost nothing. This is relevant as I’m assuming that she could train a member of staff at this place! I started trying to phone to place an order at 5pm. Getting no answer for 45 minutes, I decided that (since it was mother’s day) it was probably busy so it would be easier to go and order in person. Imagine my surprise when I turn up and see only 7 cars in the large car park. I smiled at an elderly couple getting into their car. I assume that they were probably in their teens when they phoned up to try and order their meal. Quelle surprise once more when I walked into the bar area where you go to order food. The place was dead apart from 3 people sat at a table enjoying a chat. I went to the bar and one of the people stopped her conversation and came behind the bar. She looked at her watch, scrunched her face up and looked at the watch again. When I asked if there was a problem she said “well it’s mothers day and we were really busy last night.” I said “I can only assume that’s why no one answered the phone for 45 minutes?” I can only assume the stress of the previous ‘busy’ night had caused PTSD and the poor lady was unable to answer the phone. Thankfully when I told her I’d go somewhere else a helpful lady came out from the kitchen and told the ‘busy’ lady that it’d only be 20 minutes. If only the kitchen lady could help out on the phone/customer service. Ordered the food and collected it 25 minutes later. The food was really good to be fair. Compliments to the chef. The order was incorrect though when we got it home. No compliments to the ‘busy’ lady. Food : 4 stars. Service : - 3 stars.

Our starters were absolutely fine, mains were tasty but both were not piping hot so suffered accordingly, a pity as that took the edge off the occasion. We will try again, the food was tasty and the service fine.

Again - the food is delicious, but the service is incredibly bad. Starters were on the table before we'd even sat down - to not even get to the table and have the food out is far too quick. Waiters also took away glasses we were using, very very bad. Fairly pricy too for what you get. Could be great but needs a lot of improvement.

The evening started with presentation of the menu and invitation to have pre-meal drinks as we arrived early for our booking our party of four ordered our food al-a-cart,3 starters to share,prawn toast,green seaweed and spare ribs. Three mains of sizzling beef in black bean sauce,sweet and sour pork in batter and chicken in ho sin sauce. We shared a big dish of Special boiled rice By the time the drinks came our table was ready and on arrival we were asked if we required Knife,Fork or Spoon in place of the set Chopsticks. The food was delicious and was brought to the table and placed on hotplates in the center of the table and two of our party used chopsticks and normal utensils the others just normal .After our meal we retired to the Bar lounge where three of us had black coffee with cream and one Cappuccino which was supplied with a small black chocolates. Can honestly say that this is the worse Chinese I have ever had. From luke warm water, to the soup, which was just about edible, to the main, which consisted of slimy chicken and grease soaked fried rice.

Absolutely awful from starters to main. We had set banquet for two all three courses were simply awful.

Service was good with friendly staff. Was with a party of 9 people and all good arrived at the same time, the table top has a turning segment allowing food to be moved easily around the table if any banquets or sharing platters are ordered. When the food arrived it was all hot and was delicious, went for a birthday meal and all went well, would recommend to others.

Went for sit down first visit - good food but slow service yet only 4 tables in use and waitress kept forgetting to get things like extra drinks. Decided to try a take away the second visit. Many calls made and no reply! Decided to visit in person - had to wait 75 mins. No apology either. Chinese food is supposed to be quick to make so why does it take so long? Won't be using them again

Food at best average but not bad enough to send back. Had better from our local takeaway. Friendly greeting on arrival but then we were ignored for some time. It is disconcerting to have the waitress staring at us all evening while stood at her post. Not much atmosphere in a strangely designed building. Could easily be so much better.

I can understand restaurants being overstretched and making mistakes but you would expect an apology and problems being fixed rather than getting shouted at by the manager.

Puede falta un poco de ambiente cuando está tranquilo, ya que es un restaurante bastante grande. It was a birthday treat, the welcome was very friendly and sincere, the service attentive, and helpful, the special platter was all that was wanted and it arrived quickly, well presented and served. The tastes were all very good. We will come again. Oh, my car broke down and the staff agreed I could leave it on their premises, no problem, for several days. Very helpful.

I had booked this banquet meal for the Chinese New Year celebrations and whilst I simply cannot fault the food for the price we paid including the entertainment we felt a little let down!

Cold plates, lukewarm bland food (plenty of it), poor service, hardly any staff, no atmosphere, and non-existent drinks service at the tables.

We pass Mr Chu's often and keep meaning to find a spare evening to try the food. A chance unrelated phone call led to an invite to a pre booked banquet and show.

Last minute decision to visit with colleagues, as always Mrs Chu was an amazing host and couldn't do enough for us. The food was excellent and service was second to none ! Myself and my colleagues were extremely impressed. Keep it up !

Fuimos aquí esta noche 24 de septiembre, comenzó muy bien, era mi cumpleaños, amigos 80th no me ayudó con los globos aerostáticos que nos dieron, a ellos atrapados en cualquier lugar. El servicio era lento al principio, la comida cara, pero bien, nada sabroso, al final de nuestra comida, donde tanto la aclaración de la mesa, nos trasladamos a la zona del bar. Sólo los clientes que era donde. Ahora pedimos café y cervezas, así que podría traer la tarta. . . . 40 minutos más tarde sin bebidas, finalmente llegamos las cervezas y sin café, cancelamos la café y pedimos la tarta. . . . . Yo iluminado. mucho más tarde que yo y se lo llevó,

Vivir en Francia, lo que se pierda una buena comida china. Tuvimos un menú para cuatro y no nos decepcionó. Los camareros no todos parecen estaba al tanto, pero la comida más que compensó por esto. Esperamos volver en el futuro.

Fuimos a cenar con amigos. Recibimos una orden muy cálida bienvenida y nuestra comida fue rápidamente adoptado. Pedimos un banquete para cuatro personas, que era de 25 libras por cabeza. La comida llegó y era muy sabroso y fresco. Había un plato, pato, luego los platos principales, así que mucha comida. No nos apuraron entre campos y tenía un montón de tiempo para hablar con nuestros amigos. Una noche muy agradable y sin duda volvería otra vez.

Dont get me wrong - the food here is incredible. Always too much and the starters are the best things I've ever eaten. However, the service is dire. Staff are always miserable and bring out the wrong food to our tables - even though they knew the order was wrong (and even said 'I know this isnt what you ordered, but do you want it anyway'). Slow service as well. Food is great but really let down by the staff

Visited for a birthday treat and was not disappointed. We were seated in a lovely part of the restaurant overlooking the River Humber. We decided on Banquet A for a good selection of food, it was all served hot with just enough time between each course. By the third and main course we were both stuffed. All of the food was delicious ... we wish we had room for more! The serving staff were also very polite and attentive. Can't wait to return here, we definitely recommend to others. Once again superb food. The staff are excelent always happy and can not do enough for you. We ordered several different things all were very good. Can not wait to go back again.

I am not one to write reviews but I was so disgusted with the takeaway we ordered the other day I felt compelled to write a review. Firstly we had items missing from the order we placed only finding this out when arriving back home. Now comes to the food.....totally inedible. The chicken fried rice consisted of boiled rice and boiled chicken pieces with no seasoning. Pork and duck stir fry should be renamed gristle and fat stir fry because that's what is consisted off. The curry sauce was that powdery it stuck to the roof of your mouth. Can definitely say would not recommend a take away from Mr Chu and will definitely not be returning back.

We went when the restaurant was fairly empty. The service was the worst. Left with dirty dishes for an hour or so, we were totally forgotten about. When the next course finally appeared we had to ask several times for forks! So slow, never been here and had such bad service. Drinks were practically thrown at us!! Need more staff! Won't be rushing back.

The restaurant is decorated beautifully and the furnishings reflect the cuisine, I was welcome at the entrance and asked where i would like to sit, the menu is extensive and reasonably priced, the food is excellent and staff are attentive, one of the best Chinese restaurants i have visited.

Me and partner visited whilst on a weekend away. Mrs Chu welcomed us and was on the ball throughout our meal. We had a banquet which was lovely and there was more than enough food. Would visit again.

We were staying with friends who are regulars to Mr Chu's.The restaurant was nice and spacious,and the library bar was a lovely touch to enjoy pre dinners drinks in a peaceful area.The staff were friendly,however were very forgetful on more than one occasion.We didn't let this spoil our dinner,which was lovely.We would definitely return when we are in the area again.

Went here last night (19th April) with good friends,the welcome was both warm and friendly, decided to have the set menu for 4 and one can only say the food was delicious, service was prompt yet unhurried They forgot one extra but then so did we until nearly half way through the meal once we realised and pointed it out the matter was sorted quite quickly, The sauce and spring onions with the duck was a little sparseand the french fries were from a cater pack of frozen chips which is a pity fresh cooked home made would have been nice, still it was a good night ,a good meal , and good company, what more could one want, 4/5 visit and not had a bad experience at this restaurant yet and will definitely be back

We had the most amazing meal here on New Years Eve. Plenty of food that just kept coming. It was probably the most tasty Chinese food we'd ever eaten.They were very busy and service wasn't the fastest, but hey, who cares - it was New Years Eve and we weren't in a hurry and were possibly grateful for the break between courses to let the food settle!!

We went as a group the food was fine nothing to write home about. The service was so bad we got a drink as soon as we came in but after that we had to walk round and find someone to serve us not idea when your spending over £200 the restaurant was quiet and It still took 2 and a half hours to get our mains. Was not impressed at all and would never return.

A quite large group of us had booked for the Chinese New Year Banquet @ £25.00 per head plus drinks.The usual starters were quite quickly served and were as you would expect, nothing special but OK. This was followed by duck with pancakes and plum sauce. Again it was OK although there was insufficent sauce and spring onions. Once requested the staff did respond and fetched more which considering how busy they were they did a splendid job in looking after us and getting more drinks.The main portion of the banquet should have been the 6 different main courses, one of which was to be fish. They looked very similar, lacked flavour and were totally without individual character. As a group of 13 we were enjoying the company and talked about other matters rather than the poor quality we had before us.We did complain about not receiving the fish dish only to be told we had and therefore not appreciated the fact. It that was correct it tells you everything about the standard of the food looking and tasting the same. There was also a total lack of sauce with any of the dishes.This was not a cheap night out and talking the following day I don't think any of us will visit the restaurant again

Visited for Christmas Day dinner. Very warmly greeted. Excellent service. Food up to it's usual excellent standard. Most enjoyable experience.

As usual took family here for Xmas Eve Dinner.Food was absolutely fantastic.Beef in BB sauce, Hong Kong Prawns, Lemon Chicken Crispy Duck. So so good.Nowhere comes close to this quality. Faultless

Stayed in the hotel rooms and had a banquet meal in the restaurant. Best Chinese meal ever had.Rooms are spotless, facilities are as good as any 4 star hotel. Slippers, dressing gowns, toothbrush toothpaste, combs, tea & coffee, safe in the room etc etc. Breakfast great.Owner Mrs Chu runs a fabulous establishment, her and her staff gave a excellent service.Would recommend this to anyone, I certainly will be going back regularly xxMany thanks from the Lazenby gang x

We are regular devotees of Mr Chu's in Hull but that's been closed for renovations since forever. In an attempt to sell a Saturday afternoon trip to the York Outlet, my wife suggested we could stop at Hayton on the way back. I'm just too easy...We were welcomed at the door and, despite no booking, they found a table for us with no problem. The mixed starters were as delicious as the ones in Hull, the duck was gorgeous and the only issue that was the one main course we ordered - sizzling beef in Cantonese sauce - didn't arrive on a sizzling platter as we expected. It was still lovely though. The whole lot plus drinks came to £55 which, while admittedly not cheap, wasn't too expensive either.Thoroughly recommended, and we'll be back again if Jimmy doesn't pull his finger out and get the Hull restaurant open soon!

My wife and I have eaten at Mr Chus a few times over the years both as a couple and with our family. On this last occasion it was just the 2 of us so we gave the banquets a miss and ordered separate dishes. We started with Chicken and Sweetcorn soup followed by Duck pancakes in hoisin sauce-both starters were excellent. For mains we the Beef in Blackbean sauce and Chicken in hoisin sauce-we enjoyed both mains and even managed to finish them! The hostess, Mrs Chu, is extremely hospitable and warmly welcomes everyone-a lovely person!

We have been here on a number of occasions with both family and friends. The food is excellent and the wine and drinks list very good and reasonably priced. The nice thing is the guaranteed warm welcome from both the lady of the house and the staff in general. Well worth the trip out and this is somewhere where we can safely recommend. Brilliant !

Chinese quisine at its best! Used to eating in Manchesters China town! Mr Chu equals this if not better.Highly recommended for a great Chines food experience. Excellent service from friendly staff especially Mrs Chu!

We visited Mr Chu's in a party of 7 and they obviously don't know how to cater for larger groups. When we got there we was sat into a waiting area and was given menus and had our drinks order taken. We was sat waiting for a good 25/30 minutes until a waitress came and took our meal order and then we was taken to our table. In this time we had all finished our drinks but the waitress never asked if we wanted any more at all in the whole time we was there and we was at the restaurant for 2 hours nearly which is very unacceptable! When our food came out the rice came out first then a couple of meals so a few members of the group had their food and others were sat waiting so by the time other meals came the side dishes was stone cold! There was still one meal missing which they said would be 4 minutes and we was still waiting for a good 10 minutes for the meal to come which was the wrong meal completely! It was a fish dish and there was 2 similar on the menu and the one that arrived happened to be the most expensive one out of the two and was nothing like the meal that was ordered!! When we told the staff they made up excuses about the wait time saying that they can't get fresh fish in the area so they was waiting for the fish to defrost which is absolutely ridiculous and you can get fresh fish in shiptonthorpe!! It's hardly in the sticks. They accepted no responsibility for the long wait, mix up in meals and offered no reduction of the bill due to poor service! In every other meal it was more vegetables than meant and when you are paying up to £16 for a meal you expect a lot more meat that there was! We will never be here again the food was awful with no flavour and tough meat and the service was diabolical!

Went with friends to celebrate a retirement from work. The food is very good, and the service fine. The restaurant is spotlessly clean.

Have been a few times to this restaurant over the last few weeks and have enjoyed every visit. Great food at reasonable prices.

This is our second visit. First time it was good.However this time, everything seamed greasy. The soft shell crab was overcooked.The seabass in chilli had not been descaled which really spoiled the dish.Also found it expensive, £70 for 3 of us for below par chinese food. Staff didn't seen to care either. Will not be going back.

What a fabulous place. A large restaurant just off the 1079 in Hayton. Great, personable staff and amazing food. Really worth the trip! We'll be back soon, that's for certain!

some 15 of us had gathered for a wedding reception and decided to eat at Mr Chus as some were staying there. We decided on banquet meal No 2 to save all that ordering fuss and there was not one single compliant, it was a brilliant meal served well.

The food is undoubtedly good: good choice, well presented, good flavours.However, the venue is excellent.........a selection of rooms for parties and groups, interlinked to the main area and conservatory.Very well decorated and low noise levels.Part of the building includes a lovely pub bar with a library room too.If that isn't enough, there are 10 rooms for overnight stays.I'd love to have a breakfast here!

Also part of the Plough Inn this Chines experience is wonderful. It has its own entrance or leading straight from the car park the walk through, or stop in, the bar for a pub drink is just truly welcoming. There is also a village Restaurant and a Coffee Lounge. They say they have comfortable Hotel rooms and we saw the pictures of their gym.We met Mrs Chu at least a couple of years ago, or even more, but were not able to post a review then or several times since due to not getting Trip Advisor to recognise what we were calling it. Never mind better late than never. All previous visits were on our way back for lunch from York to the Humber Bridge near where we live. This visit was different as we travelled the other way to celebrate our wedding anniversary.The place was bussing and at first we thought we should have booked. We will next time. There were in excess of thirty people although mid week it was just over half full with 3/4 people waiting tables including Mrs Chu the owner. Until last night we have never been advised to change one of the ordered dishes. Mrs Chu came to warn my wife she had ordered a very dry chicken dish and was persuaded to have a similar one but with a light sauce, she did and loved it.After a start of delicious duck and pan cakes we then enjoyed our choices, mine being a wonderful lamb and onion choice in its own iron container with a live candle incorporated to keep it piping hot. I don't drink alcohol when driving but my wife made up for me with a good white wine she said. The Chinese tea was very good and yet again we were given a tea strainer the only Chinese we have come across that provides them!I cannot recommend and praise this restaurant enough one has to go there and believe my words for ones self.Yes Mrs Chu is married to Mr Chu and they own one of the biggest such restaurants in the UK called Mr Chu in Hull. That one is also well known to us and we look forward to it reopening, hopefully, in September when it will also be an Italian Restaurant, a Japanese Restaurant, Indian Restaurant and of course a Chinese Restaurant all in one. That will not stop us going to Hayton again and again and again!

Im afraid to say I go to MrChu's for a takeaway at least 2-3 times per month!! I've tried almost everything on the menu and the one and only thing i've found that i didnt like was the spare ribs. However, I did order them again a few months later and they were spot on! So. i'll just put it down to the supplier on this occasion!Always friendly, always great service. The only word of advice is that it is so busy on a weekend you cant get through on the phone! So call early or go in and order and then sit in the bar and have a cold beer and some free prawn crackers!!!
