Food was ok, service was awful.unfortunately I have seen this is a lot in the last few years in shops along stratford road ladypool road.The owners should realise this puts people off massively, especially in this cost of living crisis every customer is king.

I haven’t been to Mother Hubbards in awhile so thought I might pop in for lunch. I ordered the special (large fish) with chips. It is still as good as I remember and was a nice treat.

Dont let looks decieve you.... 1 staff member was abrupt, I only asked for black pepper. Fish is definately not cod! The taste is int he proof. Bought one portion with wife to sit in, waited 25mins, and telephone orders were a priority. Had this gut feeling when I walked in. If your expecting fish & chips like Highfield Chippy B28 or Dovehouse Lane Chippy....think again. Batter on fish is deceiving, fish flakes were soaked in Oil and was seeping into paper try. Not my establishment sorry. Should have gone to my "never let me down place" Grill Thrill on Ladypool Road. My wife suggests these places....know its not 4 me, I would not return back, wife was 20/80 to try again. Curry sauce was watered down, chips were bland, fish was deceptive. Didnt matter how much salt and vinegar you sprinkled, even those 2 condiments were tasteless. I hate these hyped up establishments...always a let down. I should have made myslef a homemade Jam sandwich.... M wife wants spontaneous...jam sandwich? Oh the techno dance music in the background should have made me walk out asap...

The fish was good. The chips were meh and the curry sauce was decent. Had a stomach ache afterwards as did three or four of my fellow colleagues. Not going to order from here again.

Great fish and chips. Always consistently good food. Prepared fresh to order every time. Maybe a little on the pricey side, so we treat ourselves every so often. Never been disappointed, so if you've not tried it, it is a must for fish and chips in Birmingham

Fish and chips were lovely here, fish is high quality & rich batter which will fill you up. Chips were really good. Abit on the spenny side, would recommend though 👌 Will be back for the fiery fish..😋

It's wasn't great fish wasn't fried properly the batter coming off before I can put in my mouth lady that serves me was good went again try spices fish and chips again it's was awful lack any spices to the haddock fish chips I can't fault two young desi can't fault them who ever made my fish and chips needs to go back to training for the the price for sparkhill area deserves better fish and chips no offence lacking any special mother hubbards get act together my latest experience I had boy big let down wasn't great

Came highly recommended, a lot of hype but failed to live up to the billing. Chips cut too thick and fish with no taste and bland heavy batter. Portion sizes are good, but what’s the point if you can’t eat the food. Very disappointed.

With all the fancy cuisines around ,you can't beat a bit of fish and chips ! I ordered the special which Cost around £12 , I think it's enough fish and chips for 3 people imo . The chips are big and fat just how I like them , the fish is huge, tasty but a bit too greasy for my liking. You have to have the curry sauce again like the chips were s perfect. The Only negative was waiting time , it took longer than I expected even when it was very quiet. Plenty of seating area . Parking will be an issue due to its location Overall I'd give it a try .

Fish was particularly nice and chips were good as well. Curry sauce and mushy peas were nice too. Staff were helpful and friendly. No genocidal supporting drinks in their fridge either, may Allah swt put barakah in the business.

Really disappointed when paid for Super Jumbo Fish and received couple of small fish pieces sticked together. When spoken with the manager about this, manager confirmed they stick to pieces together to look like a Super jumbo fish and he was proud to do that. I was even more disappointed, paying for something else and getting something else. According to their menu it says Super Jumbo Fish and Chips, not Super Jumbo Fishes and Chips. And they have been deceiving customers for a long. They always get inexperienced students who even don't know how to place a tray or food on the customer's table. Trading standards either get Super Jumbo Fish removed from their menu or make them pay extra to buy Super Jumbo Fish from their supplier.

Been longing for A Fish & Chips meal for a few weeks and decided I will treat myself to A Mother Hubbard . Alas upon return home and seated to tuck in I was dismal embarrassed and ashamed as my hopes were shattered. The fish was no doubt double fryed but tasty plat-able but it was the chips that were disappointing. Laying under the fish odd uneven sizes big small chipped and dry , hard to the bite an occasional one soft the rest firm not the chips I was looking forward to . How strange ! How can a batch of chips be awkwardly different. Hard soft thin small large so weirdly unsatisfying and disrespectful to serve hard potato chips to a customer who has just paid £9.95 close to £10 to discover chips that cannot be eaten. I did not even feed them to my dog! I binnnnned them. Great packing though and store ascetics pointless if food not up to par. Please study how chips are cut and cooked to the right temperament colour shape and size. Do not serve hard uncooked potato chips for Gods sake. It’s a SIN.

My brother Ordered 2 jumbo fish and chips through uber eats. All i can say is what a complete joke. The chips were rock hard and uneatable. How can a shop that just does fish and chips not cook chips properly. The chips were either old bad potatoes or someone cant cook. So please sort this out and train your staff better or pay more and hire qualified experienced workers. With just 3 or 4 items on the menu it’s an absolute joke. If i lived closer i would have came back in store and it would not have been pleasant. Can tell its part of the big johns franchise With the rubbish food.

Cheap ingredients that aren’t fresh and very greasy, the floor was filthy too

The fish was very good. Crispy on the outside and soft inside. However, the chips were a big disappointment. It seemed like they were cooked in very hot oil as the outside was cooked but the inside of them weren’t fully.

The fish was very nice, but the chips were half fresh half old I'd say. Just been again recently the fish was lovely, unfortunately chips were still half cooked, the curry sauce was also not enough for me on my chips.

A clean and inviting shop entrance The staff greeted me well and took my order swiftly. The fish was cooked to order. The chips are very thick cut; fresh but not very flavourful. The fish was absolutely fresh, the batter was crispy and the fish was white and flakey however again it was lacking taste. A good size for the £10.

A proper Yorkshire Fishery, My only dissapointment was they don't sell Yorkshire Fishcakes, ( 2 slices of potato with sandwich inbetween dipped in batter. ) I was really hoping that you would sell them.

Its been a long time I had Fish & Chips. What a palatable trip to Mother Hubbard’s Fish & Chips store. The crispy, hot fish with battered chips, I would say just WOW. The first thing I noticed entering the restaurant is clean & tidy store with beautiful smiling staff. After some wait the masterpiece was in front of me. Fantastic & delicious😋. Stomach fully filled with quality food. Thank you Mother Hubbard’s and see you again guys.

Absolutely horrible service, they need to either train their employees better or simply fire them with their distasteful attitude. I expected better from them however they laughed when we simply wanted to order a small portion of food. They laughed and mocked me giggling and making horrible remarks right in front of me. A lady dark skinned and another one right next to her. Honestly fix up!

I am changing my 4 star. I just ordered this after over a year. Absolute rubbish. Old oil, this hasn't improved. No salt and vingear, Absolute basics. Asked for Cutlery totally ignored. Must be still illiterate as they were early days. Must be proper tight. Called in to complain, she apologised but was very smug. This shop will not last. 3.5 as a score is too high. And cost £40, gourmet prices for third class food.

This is classic fish and chips at It's finest. Good portion and crispy texture, since I had Mother Hubbard's in Oldham years ago I knew the opening In Birmingham was going to be special.

Don't believe the signs for your food order. Pictures on the fancy signs show one thing, you get another, Tried to order their box meal for the family as the signs show with 2 sauces on the screens. Got told you have to pay extra for anything else. Not impressed.

Really disappointed ordered 2 regular fish and chips eat in. The food came fresh within a few mins. I just could not taste the fish. Very bland, chips were hard on edges. No sauces extra charges for sauce which was poor quality. I couldn't believe how low quality the food is. I won't return again. Shockingly poor quality fish and chips.

The best fish in town, beautiful golden chips, and the battered chips WOW what a excellent idea!!! Service is very good and fast you can see how much this manager looking after the customers and his workers. He is always there ready to help. Well done to whole team. Definitely coming back.

No customer service at all. Fish was ok. The chips were vile. Reheated in oil. You pay £10 for fish and chips. You at least expect fresh chips. Most disgusting chips I ever had and I’ve had fish and chips in many places. Erdington branch much better.

Fish and cheeps test is amazing Can you do the half size Fish and sale as £5 You get more customers and societies get your specific TEST. Lovely food with real test. I will suggest that buteyful test no one bit your product love it

The food is good, while the meals look on the pricey side they are perfect for sharing. Quality of food is excellent and consistent. The restaurant is clean and well presented. I know this restaurant is one of the few that has bespoke batter made as opposed to a generic one that most F&C shops use.

Please avoid over priced food and really not nice to eat also the staff have attitude problems...the 3 ft girl who served me was on the phone to 1 off her relatives while serving the food...

Genuinely the worst Mother Hubbard's in the UK, disgusting to see how downhill this store has gone & the staff are just pathetic. Most don't even speak English either which doesn't help when complaining! Charging +£1 for mushy peas or sauces is just silly when you're paying +£10 for fish & chips anyway.

I came to this fish and chips shop due to hearing very good reviews from around the neighbourhood however, when the fish was served the taste was unbearable, the fish had a foul smell and was slimy. This gave me diarrhoea straight after and made me sick. I will not be visiting tht shyt n chips again tata 👋🏼

Really expensive first of all, you pay nearly 12 Pounds, and they don't even give you any sauces with it. Absolute rip off. Secondly staff isn't friendly at all, thirdly fish is super greasy and it looks like a Popadum with half cook fish inside. Avoid it.

Update. Visited again Oct 23. Absolutely disgusting fish. Batter has no taste and neither does the fish. Woman with glasses on till gave us chips that were mixed so old and new. Solid chips. Disgusting service. Won't be back again not even if it's free. Penchod harami shop Walked in . No one there to guide customers where to go. A whole bunch of customers just standing around. We eventually walked over to a table and sat down. The smell of vinegar in the place was too strong for us. It literally stank of vinegar. They need a smell extraction fan asap. We walked out and didn't place an order.

Great food parking can be a bit of a pain..but otherwise no complaints

I purchased fish and chips. When I asked about which fish choice there were, I was informed they only cooked Haddock. This was great for me. Haddock is a lovely fish. Longish, wait for my meal, but I wasn't put out by that. The fish was being cooked fresh to order. You have to appreciate that fact. So be calm and wait. Staff were all very pleasant and gave service with a smile. My meal was fantastic! I sat in the car and tried to eat a little before carrying on with our errands. But I couldn't stop! Beautifully cooked fish, the chips were delicious 😋 I tried to leave some for later but failed horribly, lol. I left basically a piece of fish the size of 1 and half bites. I surprised myself at the amount I ate as I usually had a mini fish and chips (not even sure if that's available here) but so happy I had the regular size. I actually didn't eat again for the day (apart from the mouth full I kept back from earlier. I'd go back again. My meal was just under £10 for the fish and chips, which I at first felt was too pricey, but honestly, money well spent. I totally enjoyed my meal.

Food was very nice, hot and fresh. Service was good. The location was not the best and it wasn't all too clean. The salt and vinegar shakers were sticky, toilets were not clean. Overall, I'd return for a takeaway only as the food was nice.

Thanks to the two lovely ladies (Naz and Amina) who served me tonight. I asked them if the can wrap my fish and chips box in foil so it stays warm till I get home which is 30mins drive from the store, even tho I came in late they still did all that and with smile. And big thanks to the boss man who made my fish thank.

Worst experience with mother Hubbard, I ordered 3 fish and chips.. one of them Had a hair wrapped around it. When I called them they said take a picture and when you come in I will replace it.. then when we went in store they said no bring the food. And didn’t replace it.. absolutely disgusting hygiene and poor customer service on top.

Food is good and excellent portions, however staffs attitude is really poor, the staff really need to brush up on their customer service skills waiting to sit down and wait for the tables to clear up, all the other tables were in use, around 4 tables was just waiting for rubbish to clear up, took about 10mins for someone to actually notice this , despite numerous staff walking through the seating area can clearly see that there were people waiting to be seated yet the delay in clearing the tables up, also doesnt help to smile as well, all seem so dissapointi and so miserable not very welcoming at all Food was decent apart from That

Overhyped place . Small Portions for a high price cannot be justified. The chips have an unusual taste and appear not to be fresh potato chips compared to Zan fishbar In Derby. Shocked the curry sauce and drinks are pricey that tok for Birmingham area. No tartar sauce or a lemon slice to compliment the fish which is normally part of the meal manner without a charge. Simply put bog-standard fish and chips. Ask your grandma for a better homemade fry up. My family travelled from Derby to this place and honestly was disappointed. Due to no parking I ordered as a takeout and my family changed their mind to dine in and risk the parking spot. As I requested for cutlery which was not issued to me for my takeout meal the short lady in a hijab questioned why I'm eating in to which I answered my mother changed her mind. Bearing in mind the place was dead. We simply sat down and brought the left overs home. The toilets are in need of repairing. The taps especially. The staff need to be professional and not eat the chips at the front desk which I found to be unprofessional as a customer it appears my paid order is being partly eaten. Staff need to be welcoming and not simply stand at the counter crossed arms and expecting me to place an immediate order whilst I'm scanning the menu screen. The place needs to offer more variety for the lengevity of the business.

Awful service. Ordered chicken and mushroom pie but got a cheese pie instead. Girl insisted it was not cheese but chicken even when it was obviously not!! Overall food was average. Battered fish and chips were good. Pies were not great and clearly defrosted from frozen. Hated the newspaper articles over the walls in the restaurant which were mostly about this and that person dying...last thing I want to read about while I'm eating out. Prayer room was much appreciated. Toilets were clean and so was the restaurant.

I visited mother hubbards expecting a nice traditional meal of fish and chips. I was greeted by a rude female staff member who clearly didn’t want to be there. Any questions I asked were answered with just blunt no or yes. I’m sorry but this is the hospitality sector if you hate your job that much then it’s time to change careers, end of the day I am spending my hard earned money to eat out and I would expect a little more respect when I’m being served. I ordered the jumbo fish and chips which came with no sauces etc which wasn’t an issue as I happily paid for them. When the food came out the stuck up member of staff literally slammed the tray on the table and walked off. I was going to complain but my wife stopped me as we had a busy day and she was starving. Now the food…. The fish no doubt was huge, but after paying nearly £20 for just the fish and chips I wasn’t expecting a small portion. Moving onto the food…. The fish was fresh but clearly cooked in old oil and the batter just stank really bad like an off smell. The chips were just standard chips really. The best thing about the meal was the pre packed sauces (tartare/garlic sauce) which I paid for separately to the meal. It’s safe to say I won’t be visiting again as I don’t appreciate rude customer service and Food that is not even sub standard. To end the place was empty during lunch hour and it’s school holidays! Avoid this place!

A bit pricey for a local.chippy in our area. But the fish n are kinda nice. The curry sauce n chips was robbery though. Wanted to try it to compare to the chippy across the road. The price list said £3.25 but they charged me 50p extra so £3.75 & the potion size was too small for that price.They didnt even fill the box. Should've stuck to across the road and got it for less and got more. The other shop that's been there for 30 plus yrs

Lady at the front today was absolutely rude. I myself know how important customer service is for businesses but the way in which we were served was absolutely unacceptable! I would certainly not recommend this place as they have awful customer service and when I asked where the manager is or when they would be in, the lady at the front did not give us a valid answer. Completely awful experience!

We’ve visited Mother Hubbards before, and the fish is so flaky but we opted for the pies this time. Tasty Halal Pies is lacking in Birmingham and this experience was really disappointing. The pie fillings tasted really good. Unfortunately, our pies had been baked and then warmed back up which meant the pastry became really tough to eat. Jaw hurting. If we visit again we will defo be asking for them to be freshly made. We would visit again to give them another chance. Disappointment that the sauces didn’t come with the food.

Terrible will not be going back their portion control is shocking talk about charging 10pound for a fish and chips but literally put 1 scoop of chips also chips taste different owners probably skimped out on paying £1 exyra for quality potatoes the fish is not as fresh as it used to be. I have eaten from many MH chippy this is the only 1 that serve horrible chips and small portions and their food has gone down

Absolutely discusting shop. This is my first ever review and I had to let them know. How does this shop never have any sauces like peas or curry? THE FISH SMELLS LIKE A BENGALIS HOUSE! CHIPS ARE CRUNCHER THAN APPLES. Don't come here, go to the Erdington one.

If this is seriously company owned & the flagship store they should be ashamed of themselves & should urgently look to sell it to a franchisee who actually cares about the brand, product and service. I was appalled to have been served substandard food, which was fried in old oil, food items were tasteless, dark batter on fish & chips hard with a stale taste of oil within the products. A absolute terrible experience...keep away from this site in Sparkbrook… However If you want to experience a great example in how it should be done, try the one in Erdington 100% better in quality / service and cleanliness every single time, 10/10…

Now where do l start. I am so disappointed by this place. They staff are most likely overseas students who know NOTHING and I mean nothing about traditional fish and chips. The shop is huge as fish and chips restaurants go. Even the toilets are very nice. A first for a chippy is that they have a multi faith prayer room. I phoned them to ask if the chicken dippers are chicken breast derived or processed. She was so DISCOMBOBULATED and it was painfully obvious to me that she didn't understand what processed food was. I asked her to confirm with a colleague who also didn't know. The seating area is very nice. It was clean and we went in the early evening and was surprised that it wasn't very busy. We ordered 4 medium fish and and 1 chicken dippers and chips for a small child. It came to about £50. I would have been very happy with paying that for exceptional food and service. Sadly it fell short on both fronts 😪. The fish was very big but lacked flavour. The chips were like potato wedges. We were all disappointed and won't be going again to this branch. The one in Erdington was better and we managed to pay 45p per portion as it was the grand opening.

Surprising great quality fish and chips. Wasn't as expensive as I expected and the portion were very good. This fish was crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. Just how it should be. And the chips were excellent.

Shockingly overpriced for what you get. But a decent meal. Take away the name and fancy packaging and this is just a standard fish and chips place. Nothing special here. Fish and chips is supposed to be a cheap and easy meal hence the popularity of it in the UK. I just don't understand how a fish and chips meal for 2 can cost over £20. London is supposed to be far more expensive but you would usually pay around £14 for 2 and for higher quality food. There are places that have better quality food for higher prices such as Poppies but the difference in quality is noticeable. I look forward to trying Mother Hubbard's other branches and see if its better, I've heard it is. Is this really their flagship store? They have a website but the actual "flagship branch" doesn't sell certain items on this website such as spicy curry sauce. They also don't have the meals that are mentioned on the website which means you have to pay more here and by individual items seperatly. As a traveller the quality of the food is very average, this may be the best Birmingham have to offer and maybe that's why it is so busy. But anywhere outside your getting better for a lot less. Here you are paying for the name and presentation. It was a nice meal and good portion sizes. I enjoyed it but just dont think its worth the money I paid. £1.50 for a small pot of sauce is ridiculous and they didn't taste right. The curry sauce, tartar sauce and ketchup was different and dissapointing.

First time visiting early (11:15) never again. Food wasn’t what it usually is, fish was rubbery chips were off colour tasted stale. I’ve always visited after 2pm and everything has always been fresh and decent in taste, not sure why it wasn’t in the early hours

Hi! I’m one of customer for mother Hubbard. Every week I taken fish and chips. But from last two weeks I took the fish bite and chips, this quality not like before. They’re changed quality. I thought it was very old oil when they’re fried. Another thing chips very harder. Just I took take away after 5 minutes I eaten with my children, they’re doesn’t like even I tried chips was very harder . I never had chips like that. What a disgusting chips. I’m sorry to say to good bye mother Hubbard 😞

I was served by two lovely ladies bahar and fiza. They were pleasant and really friendly. Top customer service.

Drove past many times but decided to stop off this time for an early evening munch with the family. The place was empty at that time, it has nice decor and plenty of seating. We decided to eat in however there were quite a few takeaway orders collected while we were there. This is probably due to the limited parking availability. We ordered the haddock fish and chips and 3 other single orders for haddock only. Portions were generous, chips were the fat variety and the haddock portion was fairly large. Haddock was very nice, crispy and not over battered. I would thoroughly recommend a visit. Give it a go, each to his own and see what you think. Lost a star on atmosphere only due to the place being empty at the time.
