Had a takeaway from here a good while back, just awful. First time I had food from here. Not coming back. Scores on the Doors - Official Food Hygiene rating of 3 out of 5 - ' generally satisfactory '. I would expect a rating of 4 or 5 - especially in a nice area like Kew and Richmond.

A local and have been going there for a few years. Food has always been amazing. However I last went there a couple of weeks ago and the food was good, but not as good as usual, but the service was terrible and the hostess was rude . Very disappointing and will not be going there again especially when you get much better and more friendly service at other local places such as the Bingham Hotel (bar menu), Thai Square, Verdi and Cote Brasserie at similar prices.

Tasty but highly conventional Thai fare. Considering they have higher dining ambitions, with white tablecloths and an extensive wine list, that doesn't feel good enough – the menu needs to have a level of finesse that matches the surroundings.

I feel seriously sorry for Kew residents if this is the best they can expect for Thai round here. I had the misfortune to stumble across this place a couple of weeks ago with 2 hours to kill. Village tea room atmosphere aside, the food is the main weakness here. The lacklustre defrosted fish cakes, satay and spring rolls were perhaps not their fault but a for staple such as green curry to comprise European peas and aubergines instead of the proper Thai ingredients (makhuea pro & phuang) is frankly inexcusable in London where they are readily available. The other main courses (red & massaman curries) also bore little resemblance to actual Thai food. The sorry excuse for food was augmented by painfully slow and indifferent service. Definitely a place to avoid.

Having lived and travelled in Asia for the last 15 years, I experienced the very best Thai food , So I am frequently disappointed with offerings in London. Not at a Montien. This is truly the flavours of Thailand, transported to Kew, served by a charming Thai family. The settings are very humble; tired even; more like your front room than a typical restaurant. Don't be put off.Once the food arrives, you will be rewarded by delicate flavours, freshly cooked, normally only available at a restaurant in Bangkok or ChangMai frequented by locals and recommended by a Thai friend. Don't miss it.

We have just moved into Kew and our love of Thai food made us look for some locally. Montien ended up being a 10 min walk away. We have been to Thailand 3 times and is by far our favourite food. Based on reviews posted on trip advisor we decided to try Montien Thai. Firstly when I rang up, the receptionist was polite and the order was taken quickly. However there is no delivery service so I had to collect but being 10 mins away was fine. When i got home it wasn't a great start, the curries were in polystyrene cups and the portions were very small. Overall compared to other Thai in London this was average and we won't be going back and not recommending. If you are looking for really good thai - Tong Kanom Thai (Kensal green) and Pomegranate (Willesden green) is where you should head

Montien has graced Sandycombe Road in Kew for decades. It is a true family restaurant in a glorified corner shop. It also offers some of the most elegant and delicious Thai food in London. We always start with the same thing: the chicken and galangal soup. It is presented in a tureen for two, and the servers always have to keep us from fighting over who will get the biggest second portion. It is magnificently fragrant and explosively flavourful. Then we always get the prawns and vermicelli -- equally reliable, equally sumptuous -- beautifully presented in a clay pot. Lately our third choice has been the penang curry, which is a rich tomato/coconut broth with lots of Thai herbs. Service is friendly and helpful, cooking a bit slow, and the place, though nicely decorated, a bit cramped. But thespectacular food makes all small shortcomings invisible. Oh, and it's really cheap. You will struggle to spend £15 per person on food.

I have been going to this classic restaurant for over a year now and for good reason. Apart from the charming staff and great atmosphere you get the most fresh ,fragrant cuisine .I love the rice with crab claws . For me this works really well with the pork and ginger stir fry which I gather from the helpful staff has Chinese influences. The spare ribs are a must , as are the pork dumplings which are ensconced in a sweet soy sauce that compliments this delicious dish to perfection. If you like fish try the sea bream , it's utterly superb augmented with bean sprouts and king prawns.I came with a party so all of these dishes and more were sampled and more.Needless to say everyone enjoyed both the fare and the vibe of this wonderful family run restaurant .The wine list is extensive and the Thai beer is always served cold unlike some restaurants in the nearby vicinity .Also , the prices are not over the top . In fact for such fresh produce and such high quality cooking it's amazing. It is important to book in advance on a weekend as this quant little gem of a restaurant is very popular indeed. The service is OUTSTANDING, a lot of other so called great restaurants could learn a thing or too from this place. You could not fault the service. Food also delicious, ok the starters were a bit run of the mill and bland but my god the mains are amazing. I asked for extra spice and they got it perfectly right. My husband had fresh steamed seabass which was delicious. Even the fried fish actually looked like a fish (and had a face!) Really well priced wines (actually super value). I love real authentic Thai food but have become both perplexed and disappointed by the glut of chains selling sub-standard variations of westernised 'quick fix' fare.It was whilst discussing my consternation regarding this subject ,with a foodie friend of mine I was alerted the Montien , which is situated in the quaint surroundings Sandycombe road , near Kew Gardens .Trust me this establishment is off the page! The service is impeccable in this family run restaurant and,the atmosphere is second to none . The menu is both authentic and expansive. and the excellent multi-tasking waitresses double up as culinary advisors who really know what they are talking about.I have tried much of the fish related fare and the chilli embossed sea bream is so delicately prepared it quite literally melts in the mouth. The King prawns with cashew nuts are also rather superb! As a lover of hot food I enjoyed a custom made red curry which was augmented with plain rice and a side of lightly infused beansprouts and noodles. My friend also ordered several dishes which I feverishly dipped into on every opportunity. Whist he popped out to make a phone call I relieved his plate of some lightly battered prawns and some dumplings that were out of this world. The salad selection is wide and varied and caters for carnivores and vegetarians alike .I enjoyed the minced chicken and beef salad in equal measures !I was also compelled to sample a dish fro the stir fry section , as was my friend. The squid was so succulent' and so was the beef with chilli.Another great touch at this 'great find' was the choice of little home made dips and garnishes that came with each course. The Thia beer was served chilled and the post meal brandy came in a heated tumbler. What more can a man ask for.Incidentally ,the friend I took was an established restaurant owner and he has not stopped talking about Montien. Enough said..!

We are going to give it another shot in a week or so to see if we caught them on a bad night. If you live in or near Kew, this is ok for satisfying a Thai craving. If you are visiting, opt for another restaurant in Kew, Q Verde for example, or seek out Thai food in Richmond, Elephant Thai for example.

Five minutes walk from Richmond train station. Absolutely love this Thai resto. Friendly, courteous staff. Busy eatery, but staff kept their calm and were very respectful despite the hot weather – it was the hottest day this year! The place was packed out during lunchtime but the staff assured us that a table would be made available. Lovely beautifully designed interiors with ethnic touches. We had the seafood pad thai, mixed satay, the tofu panang curry with tod mun pla fishcakes. Mixed satay was excellent, with a zingy sauce. Seafood pad thai was well done - juicy king prawns, mussels, squid and egg all fried together with rice noodles in a sweet and spicy sauce. Finished off with crunchy peanuts, fresh coriander and a squeeze of tangy lime.. lovely!

Where do I begin, the moment I walked in, I was treated by a gorgeous friendly waitress who sat me at a table, brought me a glass of water that I had requested with the menu. I ordered a Beef Kee Mao and requested Thai spicy. The best bit wasn't just the service, it was the Thai food and it was unmistakable amazing, the best I have ever had. I've been to Thailand and it tasted like the food there - a rare place to find in the UK I complemented the waitress on the food and was informed theres a new Chef, complements to them. I recommend any and all to atleast experience this feeling of great food and service.

Delicious Thai food served in a comforting authentic fashion. The panang curry was deep, rich, and the perfect amount of spice. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. Will definitely return!
