5 Stars The food here is absolutely excellent, and the prices are very fair for the quality you get. During our trip, we ended up coming back three times because everything was just that good. Every dish we tried was flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. This place truly does not disappoint. A must-visit if you’re in the area — highly recommended!

The food is excellent - think gastropub/British fine dining. The meats were cooked well and very tender. The cocktails are good, and fairly priced. There were a few niggles but the food was so good we didn’t really care. Service was slow at times. There were little bar napkins normally placed under drinks that were being offered as hand towels in the bathroom which was…odd? The layout of the back of the restaurant needs to be rearranged - there are two tables very close together next to the bathroom entrance meaning customers have to constantly squeeze between them/risk knocking into strangers. Would recommend as a place for foodies in a central location.

Only good things is the atmosphere with low ligjts, other than that nothing was good. Pretty average for a place like this. Plus you will pay an unnecessary service charge. Keep that in mind.

Stellar service and flavours! Cecilia was our server and she was simply amazing. Our drinks took a bit of time to arrive and she immediately removed them from our bill without us having to ask. She treated us very very well. The food was also flavourful and amazing, the portions were a bit small but it was still very worth it for the flavours and overall atmosphere of the restaurant. Highly recommended!

We came here around 9pm on Christmas Eve...we didn't have a reservation and they were still able to accommodate us. It was in the bar area, very comfortable seating but a little dark, I had to use the torch on my phone to read the menu. The food, taste wise, was excellent. Can't fault it....but i felt all the dishes were incomplete. I ordered the Pork Belly and that's all I got. A slice of pork belly sitting on 2 really thin slices of beetroot...nothing else...no veg...no garnish just that. Also, it was described as being served with "crackling" but what i got was a giant pork scratching that wasn't crunchy, not what imagined at all. Had I not ordered a couple of sides I would have been very disappointed. Usually, in restaurants where the dishes are designed this way the wait staff will recommend that you order a side dish...we had no such guidance. In fact, overall, I felt like we weren't really looked after. Service was merely adequate. Neither good nor bad. It kind of felt like we were a bit of a nuisance...I felt I needed to apologise every time I asked for something as it seemed I was inconveniencing the staff. Had to ask 2 different people 3 times just to see the dessert menu. Which i must say is underwhelming...nothing on the dessert menu jumped out as being exciting or appealing. We didn't order dessert. Which is unusual for me, I love ending a nice meal with a sweet treat. Overall I'd say the food tastes amazing...but the service isn't quite as good as the food. Probably wouldn't recommend or visit again.

A really classy restaurant, lovely atmosphere. One of our servers was fantastic and bubbly, the other a little short tempered almost which was a little offputting. The venison was gorgeous, but with the small portion sizes you really need to get a side to go with it and there wasn’t really anything suitable to go with it - I got the wedges but it was crying out for roast or mashed potatoes. Fillet steak was cooked beautifully and at least that came with a side.

I recently dined at Monthies in Edinburgh, and unfortunately, it was one of the most disappointing experiences I've ever had. While the venue itself might have potential, the service was absolutely abysmal, overshadowing any other aspects of the visit. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the staff were either poorly trained or entirely uninterested in providing a decent dining experience. We waited over 20 minutes just to be greeted at our table, despite the restaurant not being particularly busy. When someone finally approached us, they seemed rushed and distracted, barely making eye contact or offering any pleasantries. The delays only got worse. After taking our order, we waited an unacceptable 45 minutes for the food, without so much as an update or apology. When we flagged down a server to inquire, we were met with a curt response and no effort to make amends. When the food eventually arrived, it was lukewarm at best, further emphasizing the lack of care put into the service. Requests for basic things like additional cutlery or water were ignored or forgotten multiple times, leaving us feeling more like an inconvenience than valued customers. What could have been an enjoyable meal was ruined by the inattentive and unprofessional service. Dining out should be a pleasant experience, but at Monthies, it felt more like an endurance test. Unless serious changes are made to improve the staff's attitude and efficiency, I can’t imagine recommending Monthies to anyone. A truly disappointing visit.

This place is awful and was probably the worst experience I have had at any restaurant and I travel all around the world. Three weeks ago, our hotel booked us for a table tonight, we arrived at our reservation time and they told us it was at a completely different time and they could not accommodate us at all. Our hotel confirmed that they spoke to someone at the restaurant and confirmed our original reservation time. In any event, there were seats in the bar and we asked if we could eat there, but they told us that they could not seat us there for dinner because "people needed to wait there" when there were several open seats. We then had to scramble to find an alternative as it was Saturday night and most restaurants were booked at that point. The host was rude and unhelpful. I would not recommend going here at all. Go to Scran & Scallie or any number of other great gastropubs in Edinburgh and skip the attitude at Monteith's.

Very ancient and mysterious small restaurant. Super enjoy the vibe! 🥰 The venison is nicely cooked, with amazing mushroom sauce! Never had better mushroom sauce before!❤️ The texture soufflé is sooo light and fluffy, great combination with cheese sauce, but it tastes a bit greasy in the end. The scallops are good, really interesting combo with green peas and black pudding The only unpleasant experience is one of the waiter kept emphasising that we shouldn’t bring food in, though we have explained it’s just gift for each other and they could take it if they want. So not a fan for the service 😅

Dined here last night. Bought haggis, mushrooms and a whole sole. The haggis and mushrooms were good. The whole sole.... that was a sad sad dish. Inedible. Not only did it have no flavour (even salt, pepper and lemon couldn't rescue it), it was overcooked (dry and chewy). I'd bet my house that wasn't a fresh piece of fish either. As we were hungry, we forced ourselves to try and eat it, but could only get half of it down. Hide that dish in the bin (delete it from the menu), or do some serious work on it. On top of that, it was small and it was not sole (but maybe Scotish people call a different kind of fish sole than what we call a sole at home). Hurt to pay 32 pounds for that one. Wouldn't have eaten it for free if I knew what we were getting. On the positive side of things, the atmosphere was nice. The staff were great as well, really nice people and I couldn't fault their service.

A most enjoyable meal in pleasant surroundings, good cocktails and wine list. Sat at the bar and had a Wild Bramble cocktail. We both had scallops as a starter and then I had sea bass whilst my partner had a steak, though she didn’t like the bone marrow served with it ( but that was a personal choice rather than something wrong with the bone marrow). Dessert was good and the service was as expected in such a restaurant. My only criticism would be that the tables are quite close together so not very intimate if that’s what you are looking for.

First the positives: Great staff who take pride in providing excellent customer service. We were welcomed with a complimentary glass of prosecco to celebrate my husband's 65th birthday, which was a lovely touch. The barman took the time to come to our table to ask our likes and dislikes, resulting in two truly superb cocktails. He gave me the 'recipe' for mine and while I doubt I can make one as good as his it will be fun to try. We were seated at the tiniest of tables that was suitable for drinks only but not for dinner. We asked to be moved, and we were into a very dark corner. The restaurant is on the very dim side of atmospheric but we had to hold a candle up to read the menu. The food was mostly disappointing, but starting with the positives, the sourdough bread and house butter was excellent. My husband's starter of whisky cured salmon was thoroughly enjoyed, and his main of venison loin was perfectly cooked and again thoroughly enjoyed. He thought the seasoning was a little over but not so that it spoiled his enjoyment. My starter of steak tartare was the worst example of what should be a very fine dish that I've ever had the misfortune to eat. The steak was brown not the vibrant deep red of aged beef that it should be, although the inclusion of harissa may have discoloured it. I didn't detect any harissa though, probably because of the over abundance of salt. It was vinegary tasting too. The accompanying game chips were also over salted and combining the two together was lip puckering and eye squinting. My husband had a taste and was sorely tempted to spit it out. They did apologise and it was removed from the bill. For sides we asked for triple cooked chips and heritage tomatoes. The chips were beautifully crisp but a little salty. The tomatoes, the slices of which barely amounted to a whole small one, were incredibly salty. My main of (perfectly cooked) lamb rump with chicory, pea puree and minted jus was inedible. One mouthful had me reaching for the water. What is with the chef and salt! They offered to take it off the menu but I was embarrassed after the starter so said not to remove it. They brought me, and without charge, some additional chips and a tomato salad both sans salt. Both were good and the tomato portion was the size that you'd expect for a side dish, not the miniscule portion that was served earlier. We shared a dessert of orange and date pudding, salted caramel sauce and ice cream. It was heavenly! The bill arrived: the lamb rump at £29 was there but we weren't charged for the two very excellent cocktails. We had two bottles of an excellent white wine. The cost was £223. Which wouldn't have been so bad if I'd actually had a meal instead of just a plate of complimentary tomatoes and a few chips. Our experience wasn't great and it put a damper on our evening and my husband's birthday dinner. We had travelled from Cumbria specifically to eat at Monteiths. However, it should be pointed out that the customer service in dealing with the issues we experienced was exemplary. But that chef needs to learn some restraint when adding salt. There is salt on the table should anyone want more. The old adage 'you can add but you can't take away' was never truer.

The bone marrow was missing, but I was assured by the waiter that it was mixed into the peppercorn sauce. It should be worded a bit differently on the menu as it’s a bit confusing. Was tasty though! Also its more of a smooth pepper sauce no actual pepper corns visible. Good wine selection also: The La Rioja (Spanish red blend) went well with the steak and the Port of Leith Port was the perfect dessert / night cap.

Service was patchy, I had ordered bread as starter and my friends ordered starters- they received their food, and the waiter acknowledged that he was going to bring my bread but didn’t. 15 mins my friends had finished their starters and I had to remind them that I hadn’t had mine. It was then brought out- but not great. At no point during the main meal did anyone check our food was ok. The water who had forgotten to bring the bread then brought out one of the mains after we had received ours. The food was ok but not normal standard - too much salt. Such a shame as it had been our regular go to-

Great food, great time. Took maybe 90-ish minutes for the food to come out, but as long as you have a good conversation going, you should be fine. Waitress said that on a normal night, the restaurant is more bar-oriented, and their kitchen is small.

Very friendly restaurant. The service is excellent, the dishes can take a little time to arrive, but the wait is worth it. Nothing to say !

Four of us had a lovely dinner here, one of us even sent his compliments to the chef as he enjoyed his meal so much. Good service, unobtrusive yet always there when required. We weren't rushed which is nice in Edinburgh in July, all in all a very enjoyable meal in lovely surroundings.

Amazing food, ambience and service. We had the Sunday Roast and ALL the things. We tried Haggis for the first time and it was amazing as well as wonderful wine, cocktails and a chocolate mousse for dessert. They even treated us to a glass of champagne since it was our honeymoon!

We tried this place for dinner. The service was very friendly. The food was delicious especially crispy pork belly with creamy mash as a side. Other dishes such as vegetarian version of Wellington and chicken pate were very tasty as well. The place has a unique atmosphere that adds to the dining experience.

An impressive entry and cool bar. Service was terrific as was the food. We had salmon and ox cheek ( separate entrees) and both were excellent. We would recommend this restaurant highly.

A wonderful place to indulge in great drinks and food. There were three of us and we were really excited. It is definitely worth the money and stands out from many of the simpler restaurants around it. A nice change from burgers and fish & chips 😉

Romantic and intimate atmosphere. Our server was incredibly kind and patient with our party, including my husband’s elderly and hard-of-hearing mother. This was our first experience with haggis, the traditional Scottish meal and we loved it! Great service, amazing food, & loved our whisky sours!

Super great service, although we didn’t make a reservation but they still let us in to sit at the bar. I would recommend if you’re planning to go do reserve first. They are very busy. And the dinner is awesome. Thanks for recommending the Sunday Roast and the meat is nice. We also have a beef tartare and it was really fresh.

Ouf, no words to describe it . Delicious food (we had the steak tartar, the haggis and the braised ox cheek and for dessert lemon crème brûlée …). Everything was amazing. Also loved the ambiance, and the service (all of them - Dana, Luc..). Highly recommend. Forgot to talk about the cocktail - unique and creative.

Really nice restaurant for a meal using local Scottish ingredients. The chicken liver parfait was really tasty and complemented well by the pickled onions. My pork belly was also very nice and I really liked all of the accompaniments. My partner had the haggis followed by ox cheek and was impressed with both dishes. We had some nice cocktails and wine too - I enjoyed the clarified mezcal margarita. My partner had a skittles cocktail which was far too sweet for me, but he liked it. Overall it exceeded our expectations.

Went for the drinks (recommended by Difford's Guide), but the food was also really good. Maybe better! Very romantic atmosphere in the basement of the building. Surprising given it's right on one of the high streets with a lot of tourists.

The restaurant was cold to start with but asked to have the temp turned up which was fine. Our first server wasn't a great host but our attendee next was fantastic. The quality of the food was outstanding and very well presented. James

the place is disguised almost hidden but inside you find this super cozy, tucked in restaurant which usually is a sign of...design over food quality. BUT pleasantly shocked, the dinner was spectacular and is one of the highlights of my edinburgh trip! Will be back!

Cracker wee spot just out of the way enough to not bustle like the other tourist traps! Great beer selection! Could do with some snacks but that from a boozy muncher lol! Staff super engaging and knowledgeable!

Called late afternoon and booked a table for 7:45. Glad we did as pub was pretty busy. Friendly atmosphere with table service. Pub food well done with truly excellent not overbreaded fish and chips. Vibe warm and welcoming, atmosphere casual but not loud. Canine customers a welcome presence.

Good atmosphere and reasonable prices but we had a very poor experience. Ordered two coffees which then took around 10-15 minutes to arrive (they weren’t that busy) then within a couple of minutes of getting them another member of staff came round to tell us that they were closing in 10 minutes. They then proceeded to clear up around us making it very clear they wanted rid. Not impressed. If you do decide to visit, suggest you check how long they will give you to drink/eat. If we hadn’t have paid up front would have walked out.
