Ming's Oriental in St Edmundsbury

Have eaten here a few times so my daughters chose here for a mothers day meal for me , i was disappointed in the mains mine and my daughters chicken was very rubbery and tough , very disappointed in the meal.

I don't like to write bad reviews but I was so disappointed with our recent meal at Mings that I didn't want others to have high expectations like we did. The Staff were pleasant enough and the Dim Sum that the waitress recommended was delicious. But unfortunately the Seafood Noodle Soup was tasteless and the seafood in it was tough. My husbands Beef in Mings Oriental Sauce with Noodles was so rich and dripping in the sauce that it made it very sickly. I know people will say why didn't you say something at the time but it is embarrassing for us, the staff and also we didn't want to dampen everyone else's evening by being that couple to complain. I can safely say we will not be going back there or recommending it to others.

I love the food here. Not pretentious just good food and service. Everything is delicious and the selection is great. I love his oriental riblets, chicken gzoyas and scheuchan beef. Yummy

We ate here last night and it was faultless, service wise and food wise. We have tried to get in here before, faced with queues so we booked well in advance and so glad that we did. One of the best meals. None of your 'glow in the dark', Wing Yip food which has you twitching for days after. Greated by Mr Ming with a handshake. A stark contrast to the surly-borderline-indignacious -- ('you want service?') from a certain chain restaurant/brasserie we ate at the night before, just up the road!!), we were in a small room with two large group bookings and 2 tables of 4. It's easy to be lost as a couple. We were not forgotten. Despite our being slow to place our orders we did not feel neglected. One waitress in particular kept a close eye on us. It's hard to choose quickly, so many wonderful dishes. Eventually splashed out on the soft shell crab (most expensive starter but worth it), wok fried pork dumplings, mini glutinous rice parcels, satay beef and prawn ginger and garlic Mings Special. Everything was absolutely delicious, well cooked, plates hot which is always a bonus for a slow eater such as myself. Some reviews comment that Ming's is not cheap but then nothing culinary in Bury is. One thing we very, very rarely do is order pudding. I'm glad we broke this typical behaviour. Cheesecake and chocolate brownie. Perfect and not too sweet. I'm so glad we remembered to book ahead. This was such a special meal and therefore, such a special evening. And no MSG poisoning! We'll be back.

Yet another great experience. Great food, great service and an outstanding choice of menu items. I love supporting a local restaurant and Mings never disappoints. Love their oriental ribs, chicken gyzas, and szeuchen pork. Perfect location for dinner before a movie or play at the Theatre Royal. Lots of tables and beautiful views of town high street from elevated tables!

Ming has a glowing reputation for delivering such wonderful flavours and tonight I believe I had some of the best . Starters ..squid and Prawn toast set us up nicely for Spicy noodles and Mings Beef in black bean sauce. Simply fantastic !

We visit Mings often and are never disappointed. The food is always delicious, freshly prepared and such good value. The venue is lovely and the staff very attentive. We are returning for a family celebration meal this weekend.

Our expectations had been high for Mings, as one of our party had eaten there previously and been impressed. However, this time the owner was not in, and the food was rather average, and the service from the two young people stationed at the bar distinctly casual. At the outset, when asked, they couldn’t really give much advice about the dishes we might order. The crispy fried duck we had for starters was good (note to server: a quarter duck at Mings will fill c.12 pancakes so is fine for a starter). The mains however were less remarkable. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was really, really sweet, but not countered by much sour. The Chicken Yellow Bean too had a very sweet sauce, and was not very yellow beaned. The Mings Special Noodles were better, with a good mix of vegetables and meats, but were slightly lacking in “zing” – OK, but just a little tame, as if they’ve been downgraded for a Suffolk palette. The table setting was a bit flat too – presentation is not quite as glamorous as the photos on the website. All four of our dishes were served on flat white plates, sauce one side, rice on the other: it’s quite hard to chase things round a flat plate with chopsticks, which I guess is why most Chinese food comes in a bowl. And there are no rests for the chop sticks, so the only option is to sit them on your napkin. But the thing that most put me off was seeing one of the staff at the bar openly eating a bowl of ice cream, in front of all the customers (and at the end tipping it up to drain the last into their mouth). Of course staff need to eat during service, but normally this is done a little more discreetly. You have to wonder if they would have done that had the owner been there…

I have reviewed Mings many times. Well that is because I love it so much that I often go back. It is so good. Love their starters of oriental riblets, gyzos etc. And Mings Szechuan Minced Pork is spicy but delicious. I cannot stop eating it. I never have any leftovers because it is soooooooo good. Love the location and that it is a local restaurant...not some chain. My first choice in Bury St Edmunds

We visited Mings to enjoy a family dinner with our daughters and can honestly say that this is our favourite oriental food restaurant. The service and staff here are of a very high standard, very welcoming, and the menu has lots of choice for everyone. The food is fresh, well cooked, and delicious, well priced for such good quality food. A good selection of drinks too, a relaxing atmosphere, and excellent service means we shall certainly be visiting again.

We came here after the pub for a meal and had a nice time. The service was a little slow, but that wasn’t the end of the world since we were chatting and distracted, until it came to waiting half an hour for the bill and a takeaway box at the end, which was quite irritating. The staff themselves, though, cannot be faulted as they were polite and friendly. My boyfriend and I thought our prawn toast was a little bland, but the rest was good, especially the duck pancakes. He and I also had beef in black bean and mixed noodles which were both nice, as well as a drink each (double and a mixer) and the total came to around £80, which we felt was extortionate! There are better places for that kind of money, but we’d consider a takeaway from here if it was cheaper than eating in.

I have to admit that Mings is my go to restaurant, the food it delicious the service excellent and I would say great value for money. All the dishes we tried were amazing. I will be back again and again and again.

This restaurant has well cooked oriental food, most dishes are gluten free and very tasty. We tried chicken in oriental sauce, sweet and sour chicken, shredded duck. Also as starters we tried the satay chicken and spring rolls. We would certainly eat here again.

We ate at Mings in August & it has been a favourite of ours for years. But the food was not up to the standard we have become accustomed to at Mings. Its Covid compliant so no worries there.

We visited Mings with high hopes in view of the excellent reviews. However, this was really a very poor experience.We had booked but on our arrival, there seemed to be no expectation and there was certainly no welcome.We waited over 20 minutes for our order to be taken and another 30 minutes before it arrived. An apology/reassurance or at least some contact during that period would have been welcome.The squid starter was totally lacking in spice, the 'batter' was soft and the squid was rubbery - very poor. The chicken satay was no better - covered in a bland 'gloop' instead of being served with a flavoursome satay sauce.As for the mains, they came ready plated! Again, what were supposed to be spicy Singapore Noodle were wholly lacking in spice. The 'Capital Chicken' was the only acceptable item - nothing great but quite nice.We can't comment on the desserts, as we were not offered any! Nor were we offered coffee. We just received the bill, premptorily delivered to our table, without a word!Throughout, there was an atmosphere of confusion with disorganised and disinterested staff, lacking in training and without any hospitality 'bonhomie' whatsoever - such a contrast to our visit to Giggling Squid a couple of days later!As we observed at the outset - what a huge disappointment. We thought that this restaurant would be something special and become a regular favourite but we shall not go again. There was simply so much wrong sas to prevent us giving a second chance.

We've ordered several takeaways from here during lockdown and we've never been disappointed. The food tastes fresh and 'clean', unlike the usual greasy fatty takeaways you can get. Three of us had Ming's Oriental Sauce with Chicken which has a lovely flavour to it. The Thai green curry was also nice. Prawn crackers are just the best as well!The menu helpfully shows what items are Gluten Free (two of us have a gluten intolerance so this is really helpful). Not sure why there have been a couple of negative reviews for takeaway. We would highly recommend Mings, the takeaway is not a compromise to sitting in, same taste same food, just at your own home. Looking forward to our next takeout!

Decided to try mings for a takeaway instead of our usual Chinese. Mixed feelings really. If you do not like spicy food , please be aware everything has a spice to it and it is not stated on the menu.I had capital chicken which was really nice , however it was spicy and had no chilli next to it on the menu. Luckily I like spice myself but my family did not. The ginger and garlic chicken was very disappointing as was very bland also spicy with no warning. Satay chicken was decent and gyozas were great. In terms of value for money I actually would say for a takeaway it’s a bit over priced, if you were going for a sit down meal it’s more reasonable. Tasted fresh and not as greasy as a normal Chinese takeaway which was good.

I used to work in Chinese restaurants growing up so I know a lot about their sauces and how they should taste. Honestly, I've never tasted a Schezuan like this before but it was delicious and would definitely order again. For me, it tasted more like a Pad Kra Pao, a Thai Mince Pork and Basil in Garlic and Chilli Sauce. This is a compliment and definitely not a complaint, as this dish is highly rated for those that love Thai food!In terms of value for money, we can't complain. Two course take out for two for £33, £16.50 per person we think is good value. Maybe a little more than a normal takeaway but we expect that when ordering from a restaurant.Overall the food felt cleaner than most Chinese takeaways, you're not left feeling greasy and gross and most importantly happy that you've chosen to order out instead of cooking in. Arrived 7.30 for table booking 7.45. Decided to leave at 9.45 as Mains still not arrived. Service , non existent, Had to constantly try to get someone’s attention for water, wine etc. Seats hard, uncomfortable, and upstairs area very noisy from behind bar.

First visited this restaurant when hubby and I visited the Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre in December 2019. We wanted something different to eat and this place has it in abundance! The chef is absolutely amazing; the food is fresh EVERY day and what this man does with the food is amazing! It is not your average every day food; this food is cooked with care, appreciation and love! The chef and staff take great pleasure in making sure that your time at this restaurant is second to none. Nothing is too much trouble. Visited today for the second time and could have eaten the whole lot over again! It was my birthday today and I was treated to a free dessert - totally unexpected! We will definitely be going back in the near future so if you want authentic Chinese/Thai food I wouldn't go anyway where else. Best to book as this place is truly amazing! My wife and i went to Mings on a recommendation from a work colleague: what a sound decision that was! Service was prompt, with a smile, and made us realise the huge gulf in takeaway and restaurant Chinese.A bill of £75 including a couple of glasses of wine, sees very reasonable for the tasty, quality food.Highly recommended.

We tend to go to Mings after a film at The Abbeygate Cinema, and always find the meal delicious, and the staff are very helpful and friendly.

Went to my favourite restaurant Mings Saturday night how disappointed I was the service was awful had a table booked for 4 people at 7 didn’t get mains until nearly 9 o’clock the waitress didn’t seem at all bothered we were kept waiting our drinks went to the wrong table when we did get our food that also went via another table ( the food was fab) but having booked a taxi for 915 we had to eat it quickly so very disappointed What’s happened Ming ? My friend also complained and was told to e mail you direct but she has heard nothing

Went to Mings mid week with a friend, never had just bad service, which is a shame as food was lovely. They really need to show the young girls some table manners.

Enjoyed a very good lunch whilst visiting the Christmas market. We were seated in a cosy area downstairs. We both had a different noodle dish and they were delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. Next time we are in Bury we will return.

My second time at Mings and although not an exhaustive menu you might be used to in other chinese style restaurants I found the choice certainly good enough and the food freshly cooked to order - will return.

I’ve walked past Mings many times but never tried it. The decor is nice, not what you normally expect from an Oriental restaurant, less tacky and more stylish.

Easy, efficient booking on-line. Really nice welcoming staff, no fuss. Always consistently high standard of lovely freshly cooked food with nice big flavours. Ticks all my boxes.
