I found this place by pure chance on a trip to the area. The staff were very friendly and pleasant. I ordered cod and chips and off I went to park up. The food was great, fresh fish in a lovely crispy batter and a good size. The chips were very tasty and all in all I would go back if I was down again. Better than a fish supper in Edinburgh The only downside was a lack of parking but the hail, snow and wind kept the traffic wardens away.

Visited this family run chippy a few times and have never been disappointed! Great quality food and excellent service from the staff. Would highly recommend it if you're in the area!

Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the North East area and if you’re not, a reason to visit! The food is always cooked to perfection, customer service is brilliant and to top it off it’s in a perfect location! Don’t forget to try a scoop of the famous Minchella ice cream after your fish and chips. Trust me you won’t be disappointed!

First visit to Sunderland illuminations with a family member who took us to Minchellas. Beautiful succulent thick fish and wonderful chips. Doesn't get much better really. And the weather was good.

called today and had haddock each and portion of chips between us...best haddock we have tasted in a very long time.we had to wait a few minutes but it was well worth the wait.fresh,white chunky fish perfectly cooked.we sat at one of the tables with a cup of tea and enjoyed every mouthful....very pleasant staff who served us too.would certainly visit again when we are next staying in roker

We popped down last Thursday for the switch on for the lights and called in for our tea as usual the portions were huge and delicious. All the tables were taken even though it was after 7pm. We had a stroll up the road then called in for an ice cream on the way back to the car I can definitely recommend the banana flavour. We live in Gateshead 13 miles away every time we fancy fish & chips it's always Minchella's we call to.

Visited with my sister and nephew, what an absolute delight. The fish and chips was not only large, but the best we've ever had. We then returned for ice-cream, which was beautiful. Honestly cannot fault a single thing. The service was so accommodating and friendly. Will be recommending to everyone I know.

I bought fish and chips today and had to put them in the bin. The fish was dry as if it had been warmed up over and again. The chips seemed like they had been warmed up from the morning. I will certainly not be going back.

I went here as this place was recommended. I didn't enjoy the fish and chips at all as they were very greasy. Maybe we just had bad luck as it was on a very busy day when the weather was hot! I wouldn't visit again as there are plenty of other places to try!

Minchellas have been around for years and have a well deserved reputation for high quality ice creams.The ice creams really are special.

Stopped by for some dinner on my break and won't be going again. The chips were rotten and hard. Heard about the Minchella name supposedly being good quality but not in this case. Went elsewhere.

I suggest you do the same, well worth it. They have the most succulent white fish cooked to perfection. Well done and keep up the good work.

I normally don't review restaurants however I feel like I have advise on this one. After taking my money and making us wait quite a long time to be served I was presented with very dry, old looking chips. I asked if these were fresh and was advised their appearance was due to the oil they cook in. I asked them what type of oil this was to be told ground nut oil. I myself do not suffer from any allergies although my niece does. I asked why they do not provide signs to let people know and they said they do have a sign at the back of the shop. This is not visible to customers who are at the serving hatch which I advised to the girl only to be met with a shrug. I will not be returning to this food outlet as not only is the food unpalatable they do not seem to care about the danger they are putting people with allergies in.

As a takeaway you want two things - to be served quickly and efficiently and that the food you get is good - as fish and chips go - this place nails both.

Always had great chips and battered sausages from here. The ice creams are amazing too. Highly recommend this place. The cafe next door is good too though.

Been to minchella's a few times over the years. it is unbeatable: lovely white fish, good chips, 'scrunchins' (bits of batter), and you can walk across the road and eat them on the prom! Watch out for seagulls though, they know you have food.

No hay mucho que comentar. Típico de pescado y patatas fritas en un lugar junto al mar. No está mal, bastante sabrosa. Pasta era bastante dura en el pescado, pero sabía bien. Porciones grandes. No es el mejor que he probado, no es el peor. No comer - hay mesas y sillas en el exterior, en una zona pequeña. El personal era muy amable.

Any time of the year you can come here for fish and chips and they are always very tasty, fresh and hot. The staff are always friendly and even though there are always queues you never have to wait too long.

Can't tell you how many years I've been going to this chippy, 40+ years, I find it's gone down hill. Chips were dry and staff were rude, gonna start going next door or to Downeys at Roker.

Simple review, just to state that at the ripe old age of 49, Minchella's served me the best piece of fish I have ever had in my life. Great batter, but the fish was just so sweet. Just perfect and a total joy to eat

ordered the Cod and chips , the batter was Golden brown and VERY tasty . The fish was moist and flaky , it was really nice. The chips were also a lovely brown colour and just perfect. Highly recommended !

Came to Sunderland to see the illuminations an fancied a bit fish, had to ask for my money back as it was rock solid, you could tell from the colour it was over done! Looking at the hot counter, everything looked overdone. The girl did give the money straight back!

We visit once a week because it's spot on for food and service. You know it's product is good when several other chip shops, take aways and resturants in area are empty and there's a que. All food is great but the haddock is out of this world and always freshly cooked so we order by phone 5 min before we get there. Highly recommended.

We come here quite often for excellent fish & chips when busy. the fish, we have haddock, is always cooked fresh. However one evening we has poor chips as they appeared to have been sat most of the evening so was very disappointed that they don't maintain their standards.

By far the best fish and chips in this area! However, on bank holidays and weekends there is always a queue but definitely worth the wait!!

Warm evening so decided on a stroll along the seafront. This place looked very popular so thought I would give it a try and I was certainly not disappointed. Had plaice which was freshly cooked to order in around 5 minutes. Great chips too. Portions exceed ample. Definitely merits a return visit in the very near future.

We ordered two fish and one bag of chips between us the fish was a good size and very fresh there were plenty of chips the batter although light and crisp did appear dark perhaps the oil was old but still tasty

Beautifully cooked Haddock & chips. Curry sauce as a side. With free batter bits. Seating outside or wander to the beach to enjoy the view. Bargain at £6 per head but maybe that's a Southerner's view :-)

Visited tonight as going to Mini Mania at Seaburn. Was told about the short wait for haddock - no issue and was served within this time. Food was tasty and chicken bites that we ordered for our children were tasty too. Reasonably priced for being on the sea front.While we were waiting there was a constant flow of customers and can understand why.Ice creams looked good - although never had any this visit.Would recommend a visit if in the area.

Came here on Saturday after the football. Fish was a bit over cooked but chips were lovely. Portions generous for one. Good value at £6.

Simply brilliant. Good quality fish and chips cooked to perfection.They do not understand quantity control, so if there are two of you just order 1 portion of chips, enough for two hungry people. Beware of the seagulls the word has got out to them that these chips and the fish make a great seagull treat.

Having beenborn in Sunderland in the early 1960's I can remember these 3 holes in the wall offering fish and chips as long as I have been aware. In fact in 1964/65 I remember eating from here the first fish and chips I had ever eaten. I was therefore curious to try them again when in the area. Not sure if the shop is run by the same family now, but the exterior has been spruced up, although the 3 windows in the wall are still the same. Ordered a haddock and chips, with "batter" of course - small pieces of batter which have been scooped out of the fish fryer while the fish is cooking - for the benefit of non North Easterners. When asked if you want batter with your chips - say yes - it's delicious. Anyway the fish and chips were superb. haddock is so much better than cod, and North Eastern batter is quite simply the best anywhere. Don't know how, or why, or what they do, but it is so different, and so good. Eat fish and chips from here when you are in Seaburn. Worth a detour from the town centre no less.

Went with friends after a local football game to avoid traffic. Portion sizes small for what I'm used to paying. Thought the sausage and chips were overly greasy. Ice cream was spot on though.

Just came back from our monthly visit to Minchella's.The fish looked a bit lighter in colour than normal, however tasted nicer than ever, the service was fast and friendly and have to give a big mention to the bubblegum flavour ice cream WOW

Have to pre order or wait for haddock but we'll worth it. Can ring up to pre order and just let them know when you will be there it will be ready or almost ready for you. Great service. Can pay by card now too bonus.

Delicious fish and chips !! Lovely fish with golden crispy batter and tasty chips mmmmmmmm ! Good curry sauce too. Great sitting eating them on the seafront, watching the waves crashing on the beach.

Tried the Fish n chips here and they were lovely. Fish a decent size, well cooked, fresh and tasty and too many chips. Then I had to try the ice cream. I had a salted caramel nutty cone and it was lush. Will definitely be back

Checked TA before this latest trip, i had got it into my head i wanted a steak but the place i had found (The Cliff) did not appeal (don't know why) so we headed for the beach and my 2nd choice Minchellas & what a find. OK its better if the weathers OK as its take away but they do have a number of street tables over looking the sea. we had the Cod & Chips, i need to go into bit of detail: The Golden Crunchy batter on the fish is quite exceptional, the Generous white cod portion had even me getting selective towards the end, with great chippy chips. served in a box help yourself to salt and vinegar with "Scraps" its been 30 years since i have even seen scraps, what memories but i have to say the batter is even better here than my distant memories. when we are back in the area this will be a definite visit.

Just visited for the first time and really enjoyed it. The best fish and chips I've had for years. It's not the cheapest or the largest portion size but don't mind paying for quality.

Minchella's serves up the best fish and chips I've ever tasted, the batter is so much tastier than any other I've had, don't be put off by the queue as they are so well staffed to enable you to be served quickly. The reason why there is a queue is because of the high quality of the food. The 13 mile drive is well worth it for us.

You always get lovely fish & chips reasonably priced. Its nearly always cooked fresh for you but if not you know it hasn't sat there for long. Portions are very generous so we usually go halfies on the chips. Staff are very friendly

I ALWAYS come here for chips when I am having a treat and it never fails. It's in a perfect location. Great selections, tasty chips (love the curry sauce!). As always they have the best staff about - Minchella's - your staff do you proud! They always serve me with a smile! :-)

Had a lovely walk along the seafront with family finished off with fab fish and chips from Minchellas. Only thing I found bizarre was having to pay for a plastic fork. I know it's only pennies but it's the principle. Surely you should get one for free if you're eating their food. Otherwise, I would have rated outstanding.

Living a long way from the coast, it's always a treat to get decent fish and chips. A visit to Sunderland, a long walk along the beach, and Cod and Chips from Minchella's. It's not just the quality of the food but the sea air that makes this a perfect experience.

Went here yesterday with my son and friend, I would normally go to the fish and chip shop next door but due to my last experience I decided to try Minchella's. Paid £19 and change for two fish and chips and one fish Bite's and chips with three cans of pop. We all enjoyed the food and will return, hopefully to the same standard we experience and not to the standard I experienced years ago at Minchella's, when the chips looked like they were coated in manfat and the fish tasted of dog splatter, (yes I used to roll in it whilst asleep due to having a dog with dementia) I know the similarities very well! Consistency please Minchella's and I will keep on returning, see you soon.

This fish and chip shop has been here alo of years and we always get our fish and chips here when we are at seaburn.They fry in almond oil and they always taste lovely.There are tables and chairs outside and when it is warm it is always very popular.

We thought we would try this cafe as recommended by our Grandson. The fish and chips were lovely and freshly cooked. The fish was a large size and the batter tasted crispy. I had tea which was awful and my husband a cappuccino which was ok and both at reasonable prices. The only down side of eating outside on the pavement is the raucous seagulls. There was a great lack of cleanliness in the eating area!! We finished with a nice Ice cream which was nice.

Nice fat chips with crispy edges, not overly greasy, fresh cod and good mushy peas, all by the seaside. What more could you want?

Quick service and not a bad price. The chips were OK but lacked flavour. The fish was a decent size and taste but the overdone greasy batter let it down. Pretty average.

Minchella's for the win again! We have never had a bad meal from here. I had the fish and chips today which were absolutely amazing. My parents live in Ireland and they always ask for Minchella chips when they arrive because they love it so much.The food is always cooked fresh, service is personal and friendly and portion sizes and prices are ace.
