The food was amazing and with one person in our party being gluten intolerant they went above and beyond to accommodate her dietary requirements. The waiter we had was so attentive with a refreshing sense of humour. We will definitely come back again! The only negative I can say is that we were one of two tables so the atmosphere was subdued but the food and especially the service was outstanding.

Had some excellent breakfasts here with my partner. They allow dogs outside so we were able to bring him to sit there with us. The outside needs some TLC but the staff were great, kind and helpful and we’d come back here any day. Excellent coffee!

Poor quality food- would avoid! Arrived and was seated promptly, nice table and attentive staff, we ordered the tapas selection and a sirloin for my wife / ribeye for me both medium rare, onion rings and Caesar salad as sides, the tapas arrived in 3 little ramekin size dishes nothing was seasoned at all, meatballs where ok, chicken and chorizo was an extremely over cooked stew with the chorizo being the deli sliced variety and the chickens being so over cooked it was like pulled chicken that has probably been festering pre made in the back of the fridge, final tapas was a tortilla which was so dry and over cooked the 3 little squares had curled up and was slightly green - again no seasoning what so ever. My wife had ordered a cocktail which was really nice, my shandy on the other hand was half Peroni and half soda water or carbonated water - probably the post mix machine not working. It was replaced and I was told ‘perhaps it was because of the Peroni as it’s a lager’ and that they had tasted it and deemed it fine, replacement was sent which wasn’t great but a little better - I ended up just drinking about 1/3 of the drink. Main courses arrived promptly and there was a visible difference in size between the 10oz ribeye and the 10oz sirloin, the ribeye was about 2/3 of the size and even with shrinkage not acceptable. The dishes looked totally bare on small triangle plates with a small bucket of chips which were seasoned and cooked ok half an on ripe plum tomato which was more or less raw with no seasoning, olive oil etc for flavour. My wife had ordered the peppercorn sauce as an extra at £3 which came out bizarly in a tiny shallow dish ( like a small crème brûlée dish) the sauce was clearly bought in and straight out of a packet like savoury custard and warmed in the little dish, possibly the worst peppercorn sauce I have tasted. No other garnish what so ever for what was a £30+ main course onion rings were homemade and very good. The Caesar sales or ‘mini Caesar salad’ was just a handful of leaves with 7 croutons on top with a few shavings of Parmesan and a squeeze of what I assume to be ready made Caesar dressing on the top, not a mixed well dressed salad at all, once this was tipped on a side plate it literally looked depressing and at £4 for what probably costs 0.50p food cost an actual joke. Everything is an add on, you want a sauce it’s an add on, garnish it’s an add on, I asked if the steak came with any compound butter and was told I could have some garlic butter on the side, we started to eat the steaks and I had put the garlic butter on it and the steak was so cold the butter didn’t even melt, not even slightly. My steak was under seasoned except for a token sprinkle or garnish of sea salt on top) but no seasoning on the steaks whilst being cooked. My tiny rib eye steak was rare but tender enough, my wife’s sirloin was blue and actually stone cold which she had to return- when it was returned it had clearly been in the microwave and was so tough she had to leave it. We was asked for some feedback which we gave and we was told “no one has ever complained” which of you read the reviews is clearly not true. We was offered complimentary drinks and alternative main courses but by then we had had enough and if you can’t season food correctly I couldn’t face another badly cooked in seasoned dish - in what world would we want more poor food? The restaurant manager did speak to us and again said no one had complained before, we was offered desserts but had seen enough and I can only imagine how bad they would have been. In departing one look in the kitchen tells you all you need to know, 3 young ‘chefs’ which clearly isn’t enough for the size of the restaurant, the chefs need to be trained properly as they clearly lack basic knowledge of how to cook. it’s a shame because I’m sure the restaurant and cocktails look good on Instagram but the food is awful, the chefs need to be trained how to cook and season food properly and how to ensure food is at the correct temperature- shocking food

It took a good couple of minutes further for the staff member to notice me standing there. The first waiter we had (Rishi) was amazing-very friendly and polite but then we got two different waitresses after who were polite but seemed uncaring. One was wearing an un-ironed oversized shirt which I personally don’t think looks smart especially half tucked/untucked-even if this was meant to look fashionable it didn’t it just looked messy. The restaurant was almost empty too! A few years ago it would have been busy so in my opinion I thinks it’s because they’ve let standards slip and people no longer see the value-I certainly didn’t. The starters were lovely and deserts. The main was disappointing though-I’m happy to pay £40 for a nice steak (which it was) but the presentation looked cheap and I would have expected a bit of salad garnish perhaps. The sauce was stone cold and congealed which was disgusting so I had to take it back up to the bar as I wasn’t going to wait for my food to get even colder before I got attention from a waiter/waitress. The replacement sauce was weak too-tasted more like watery Bisto. Totally ruined my main course and all we were offered was a free dessert (£10 compared to a £40 main). Looks as though they’ve cut back on staff due to cost which I understand to a certain degree but not when I personally am paying £200 for a meal out! We were really disappointed with our experience and probably won’t go back there again now which is obviously what others have also thought as it was dead for a Saturday night! Awful 80s music too. Elysium Group…looks nice but your standards have slipped dramatically…sad times when competition is high-I’ve been to better restaurants in Colchester and paid a fraction of the price for a meal.

Disappointing food, services & atmosphere. Beautiful restaurant, with only a few dinners meant it lacked atmosphere. Staff slow to take drinks order and not at all attentive. The menu was limited. Starters were really nice, but my seabass, potatoes & green beans were swimming in melted butter. The waiter did offer another dish, and was very good, but everyone else would have finished if I placed another order.

We had the most wonderful evening! Beautifully grilled calamari, breaded whitebait, homemade scotch egg and pulled pork Benedict starters followed by beautifully cooked sea bass, lamb tagine, traditional fish and chips and steak burgers. Everyone loved their food and our staff were so helpful and attentive. Family friendly and a great children’s menu. We finished our meal with the cheese board, cheesecake and chocolate fudge brownies. We fully recommend and will be back soon! Thank you to trip advisor for helping us find this treasure!

It was a shame really as the actual evening itself was nice, food was prompt and the cocktails were lovely, HOWEVER, really let down by paying an extra £40 on top of our drinks bill for drinks we didn't order, we were a group of 10 but we all paid pretty much as we went along to ensure we wouldn't have an outstanding bill at the end. The red flag was that a Strawberry and Cream drink was on the receipt which none of us had or ordered... I can only assume they added drinks to our table that weren't ours. We all paid our food money up front to our friend so pop on one card in order to avoid this, and all knew what drinks we had ordered, which wasn't alot as we all left very sober. There was no system for them to tell us what had been paid for, which is very odd! They only put in the amount and no the item purchased!!

Manager chewing gum. Lovely!!. Lots of space, but everyone crowded together just to make the restaurant look busier than normal. It is very difficult for them if you don't like the seat and want to be moved. Uncomfortable wooden seats. Who's idea was that? Disappointing menu. Sunday roast chicken was dry but had a nice flavour. Good amount of food just could have been presented better. Decor is awful and confusing. What's with the golden dinosaur? 🦖 we will not be going back. Trying too hard to be something it isn't. What a shame.

As requested by loudly shouting across the restaurant “sarcastically” by manager Justina we should give 1 star review. She had already taken payment from my partner and teared up the bill in front of our faces because we politely declined paying £50 service charge The reason being we had to repeatedly remind staff to bring out our orders that seemed to have been forgotten, some did net even arrive and we just choose to forget about them. This was First time visiting this restaurant and considering the size, menu and decor, we was expecting something a bit special and it to be busy on a bank holiday weekend, there was just one other table being occupied, should have been red flags straight away! However decided to stay The bill came to £450 so considering we was paying a fair amount and the restaurant only having one other table we thought the service would have been better. But it was absolutely terrible! And the manager (so she called herself) Was vile, when confronted about the ripping of the bill and the “give us a 1star” comment she was speechless but blatantly smirked and laughed as our backs would turn to gather our belongings Again we questioned her rudeness and disgusting behaviour, but she gave no comment But continued to laugh as we left She really did embarrass herself and let the restaurant down Obviously there was more to this but we cannot understand why, we was polite and caused no problem whatsoever, we did not even complain about certain items that did not arrive, we never complain. all we could make of the situation is that one of the servers was foreign and could not understand or speak English properly To take our payment first and then afterwards treat customers with this level of disrespect is very brave considering the lack of customers they had, I doubt they can afford to carry on with this management and customer service. 1 star given, does not even deserve that, will Definitely not be returning or recommending

Lovely food, AWFUL outside, glamorous inside...firstly, let's start by saying we highly rate the Elysium group, both Pavilion & Hudson are superb venues, and Mimosa (although an odd location) certainly carries the same level of grandeur upon entry to the interior and with regards to its high level of food. It was a sunny morning, so we decided to have breakfast outdoors, we walked through the lavish interior and to the back area. At first glance the outside looked nice, but as we went to get a chair we saw they were actually rotting we went to another table, the wood was peeling and there was green algae on the chair, we walked to a booth but the seating had partially collapsed, we eventually sat in the one spot that looked "ok" only to see coffee stains on the table, then looked up to see cracks and spliters in the wood with rust lanterns hanging down. To be honest, the outside area was an absolute shambles. It really should not have been open to the public in such a state. It needs an awful lot of landscaping work, cleaning and brand new furniture. On a positive, the food was very good, the service was OK (albeit a little slow) and overall we would go back.... I just really hope the management can put some money towards improving the neglected outdoor area, especially when the sun is out and people will want to use that space.

I went last night for a friends birthday and there was 15 of us. We all had to pre order our meals a few days prior and I ordered Brie for starter and Sirloin for my main. The restaurant wasn't that busy and the food took a very long time to come out and everything didn't come at the same time, there could be a 5 minute period where the burgers would come out then the steaks after. The worst part was that after waiting nearly 10 minutes after everyone else's starters came out mine still didn't come out so I let the waitress know and it took another 10 minutes for mine to come out at this point everyone had finished their starter. The starter however was really nice but could have been slightly bigger. Again when everyone's mains came out I waited another 10 minutes and mine was nowhere to be seen. I told the waitress and it took another 5 minutes for the manager to come over and ask me what I ordered at this point I just decided to change to a burger as I didn't want to wait so long. It took another 15 minutes for my food to come out and everyone else had long since finished, I ate all my fries and a bit of the burger which was pretty basic but I was just annoyed at the experience at this point. The staff didn't apologise for the service and didn't explain why both my dishes were missed out. The manager didn't even come over but was happy for me to pay full price. I wouldn't mind if it was really busy and they were rushed off their feet but it wasn't. I'd suggest when it's like this they could put everyone in one section of the restaurant so servers can move between tables easier. Quite a few of my tables food also came out cold. I wouldn't go back here and wouldn't recommend. Most of the staff are nice but seem to ignore problems with service and also didn't apologize for both of my courses being forgotten about.

12 of us went for my brothers 50th on a Thursday night. Only another 2 tables of 2 eating. First of all the table we wanted had no light. We were using our phones torch to read the menu but they said they couldn’t turn the lights on 🤷🏻‍♀️. We moved to another table so we could actually see what we were ordering and eating. It took forever for the starters to come out but one fish cake didn’t come until 20 mins after we had all finished ours. The waitress dropped scallops all over the back of one of our guests. That scallops came out again within minutes and yet the fish cake didn’t. The steak and lamb mains were nice but the steak burgers were lacking. They then decided they wanted £65 service charge which we obviously queried and reduced to £20. How they had the audacity to charge us beyond me. I wouldn’t recommend and am certainly not going back. Overpriced and not worth it. As they only had 4 other diners, I think locally this is known not to be a place to go. Never will go back.

Valentines meal Ordered starters and main to wait 45 minutes for the starter, then waited a further 1 hour and 40 minutes for the main after several times asking how much longer it would be. Steak cold chips burning hot mushrooms under cooked, complained only to be told there’s another booking at our table so there’s not time to re cook our meals, we spent a total of 3 hours and 20 minutes at the table and I find this totally unacceptable. Totally disgusting service from the manager and staff with no respect for the customer, will not be returning and would advise against this restaurant.

I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. The staff were grossly incompetent and did not fit any expectations. We were seated at 20:30 and by 22:35 our food had still not arrived, when asking the staff how long will it be they kept saying it’ll be 5 minutes or it’s being plated up now which was purely a lie to keep us happy. The excuse of it’s “busy” when not even 40% of the restaurant was occupied and knowing that it’s a popular time of the year to go out to eat you would expect them to have more staff working to fulfil this “demand” if they purely could not cope. We decided that it had got too late after waiting nearly 2 hours for our food and asked to pay for our drinks we had so we could leave to which the manager was completely blaze about the situation and kept repeating “it’s being plated up” when clearly it was not. The waitresses behind the bar when we was attempting to pay for our drinks was blatantly speaking about how “impatient” we was being and was told by the manager to be quiet and go away is completely unprofessional. And the audacity for them to add a service charge to our bill when what service did we actually receive! Would never recommend to any person I know and will never be going back!

Food - mediocre is being kind. Steak underdone and had better fries in mcdonalds, salad - starving rabbits would have left it. Yesterday I had booked for 4 of the girls to go to Mimosa like we have many times. There’s been a change in management since we last went. We arrived and the female manager with brown hair and glasses who we assumed to be the manager had a very condescending attitude. This was intimidating my friends and I are in the age range of 25-28 and she spoke to us like children. We ordered simple things 1 x fish and chips 2 x Burgers & a Ribeye steak and a few side’s from ordering our food to arriving at our table took an hour and 15 minutes, the restaurant was not even a quarter full. Our food was cold and half of the sides we had asked for were missing, I went to talk to the manager who completely dismissed the fact that we had waited so long and the food was cold with missing items ordered, she didn’t try to rectify this by any means or offer any solution. I must say the cocktails served by the Bar team were amazing and made with care Again this was my birthday meal, I was wearing a birthday badge and my friend had given them my Birthday cake to bring out. I went back to the table and waited another 5 minutes for the food we had missed to come. It didn’t I gave the waiter my food at this point as it was freezing, the girls had finished their meal (most of the food had been left bar the ribeye) and told the waiter I no longer wanted it. The waiter was lovely, I can’t remember his name but he was a young guy with black hair and glasses. I had tears in my eyes and just wanted to get out of the restaurant to make the most of the rest of my birthday night, we had asked for the bill 3 times & repeatedly had to ask for the service charge and burger I gave back to be taken off. The food was being served without the hot pass on, (we could see into the kitchen where we were sat) guests were complaining about their food on the table behind us, The difference was the manager went over to them I can only assume this is because they were older ladies. She gave them the respect all of the customers deserve regardless of age and status. I worked in Mimosa previously when under Diego as director and Catalin and James as managers. I’m an avid fan of the owner's venues in and around Colchester I.E pavilion, Hudson. We usually get the Tomahawk and I’m so glad we didn’t pay £90 for food that seemed like it was made hours ago and left out to go cold. At this point, my friend asked for my birthday cake back as we were going to go somewhere else to get food. The manager laughed at her, gave her the cake & rolled her eyes. I have never experienced such disrespect, disregard and Ageism on my birthday from my favourite restaurant !! I will not be returning. The service and the whole night was horrible, no one should cry at a restaurant on their birthday. I hope the owner reads this and thinks about who he trusts being the face of his business. I would come to Mimosa for all occasions and talk about this restaurant with such high regard I am so upset that I can no longer do this.

We went for brunch on a Sunday morning, it's was very quiet and quite cold. When we asked the staff if the heating could be turned up, they said there wasn't much they could do. However, they did however make every effort to get us a blanket and apologised. We soon warmed up and enjoyed the food we ordered. Unfortunately we have just had one of the most disappointing experiences we’ve ever had, we have family from America visiting and wanted to take them to what we thought was a lovely restaurant, our table was booked for 6.45 and we had our toddler with us, wasn’t busy at all so we ordered our toddlers food straight away and ordered our starters and drinks, an hour had passed and our toddlers starter wasn’t even out so we asked how long this would be and told 5 minutes another 20 minutes passed until it came out we waited even longer for our starters, 2 hours after ordering our starters came out and we waited another half an hour before our plates were cleared it then got to 9pm and still no sign of our mains, we asked the bar staff and waiters who said they would chase up, we then requested to speak to the manager about getting mine and my partners boxed up to go as it was 9pm and our toddler was getting so tired and they still were not out, only to be told that they hadn’t even began to make any of our party’s meals, we then said we would like to cancel our whole tables orders as we will go elsewhere, we asked what the delay was and told that there wasn’t enough kitchen staff, we completely understand that things happen sickness etc but we should of been told this upon arrival or upon ordering, the manager bluntly responded that she decided to go into the kitchen and help instead of telling people of a delay which is absolutely ridiculous. We also noticed at this point that the other 5 tables in the restaurant had no food either so everyone was waiting. We were left completely disappointed and hungry, this has ruined our last family night together and we will certainly never return to this poorly run restaurant.

Poor and overpriced food. We visited for an impromptu lunch whilst in the area. The venue is nice but I have had better food in a cafe. Fries pre cooked and rubbery, chicken skewers x 2 and bland rice with no accompaniment for £16 then charged additional fee for a sauce. A steak sandwich which was steak on one half of a baguette is not a sandwich. Please look up the meaning of the word sandwich in the dictionary. We were robbed of nearly £50 for a very mediocre lunch and guess what, we won’t go back.

Fixed meal Starter was a good standard Main the won’t have better description beef stew was Ok but the smash potato was watery and other parts of the main meal was of poor quality. Sweet so called sticky pudding with ice cream was substandard Ice cream was good but little of it, dry out ginger bread cake with no sauce was meant to be the sticky pudding with a load of ground biscuits crumps over it very poor. We have eaten here before a few years ago and it was very good unlike this visit. The restraint layout and fittings are of a high standard unlike the food they served. No wounded why not many guests were booked and appeared to be approx ten percent used on what should have been nearly full. So I expect the standard of the food being served has become general knowledge. So sad if no changes are not made.

Very disappointing meal. The place was empty at 8pm on a Friday night - no atmosphere. It was freezing inside everyone at the tables were wearing coats. Our food took forever to come despite it being empty. All our food was cold, lukewarm at best (half our table were salads so there weren’t many hot meals to get out at the same time). My friend is vegan and when I asked what she could have as there was nothing on the main menu they said “the side salad!” Won’t be going back!

The food was delicious for me, personally. That's my only positive comment. One of our group had his steak over done (supposed to be medium rare, came up WELL done. It shook the table when he tried to cut it!). He was told a new one would be out for him in a few minutes and the waitress took the who plate away, sides and all. 20 minutes later, after everyone else had finished, the waitress brought back a plate with one nicely cooked plate, and nothing else. No chips, salad, just the steak. With everyone else finished, the person didn't really want to eat on his own, especially not a bit of meat on its own! When we complained, the waitress was not helpful, saying they wouldn't take the steak off and gave him a free coke (!). The person next to him received the wrong order main and dessert. It would be fine but the waitress was outwardly frustrated and it tainted the dining experience. In general, it was slow, but we expect that from Mimosa having been there a few times, we know it's going to be slow. An hour to get drinks and starters, given we'd pre-ordered, was a bit much. My review would not be so negative if someone, at any point, had said "I'm really sorry about that". Not once was there an apology about the long waits, wrong food being put down, or steak being cooked terribly.

Spa day for Mothers' day. Lucky that the beauty therapists were so good because it saved the day. Pool area looked very good but the aromatherapy room had nothing of aromatherapy about it and the pool itself was icy. The relazing pool was also too cold to sit in but the jacuzzi was warm: unfortunately the bubbles were absolutely violent and because so much chlorine had been used in the water, it was spat in your eyes and we had to get out, eyes streaming. So we went to get our afternoon tea: what a disappointment! When we got to the café area we were left waiting for quite some time with no one to seat us. The room was in a mess: tables covered with detritus. They only managed to clear up by getting a beauty therapist to come and clear the tables! We settled in for tea.5 minutes later we had eaten it! We each had the equivalent of 2 slices of bread cut into 4 little sandwiches. Only 2 fillings: cheese and tomato and egg mayonnaise. Usually if you go out for afternoon tea you have double this amount and are then offered more. At Ballentynes you had a couple of mouthfuls and when we asked for more were told we would have to pay for them! The one scone each was actually very nice but the cake selection was dismal, with a small piece of chocolate cake that we had to cut to share ourselves and another that looked so amateurish that neither of us wished to sample it. Absolutely nothing special about this "special Mothers' Day" event. As is often the case in hospitality the management is trying to increase the profit margin by cutting back on the quality of the offer once payment has been taken and cutting back on staff so that staff, who were, I should add, all very pleasant, are rushing around and unable to provide the expected level of service.The place is definitely not meeting it's potential. We will not be visiting again.
