I was the first time we had been there and certainly won’t be the last food was amazing great atmosphere, very good service , we had other great food , belly pork , Teriyaki beef amongst other tasty food delicious

The food was disappointing. It took three attempts at cooking tortilla chips properly. The seitan was terrible. The cocktails were overpriced for what they were. It didn't have a very good vibe either. I would not recommend or return.

Food and drinks were lovely staff were brilliant.

Such a cozy atmosphere, on a lovely street, food is tasty and being served as tapas means you can try loads of different things and they are all fantastically presented. Slightly on the expensive side, but a fantastic local business worth supporting 🩷

I thought I’d missed my chance to go here but I’m glad it’s reopened. - Nice margaritas - Grilled peach and mozzarella salad was an absolute treat - I would have preferred a thinner slice/smaller chunk of fish in the ceviche - the tacos felt light on toppings. The meat was cooked well. The miso duck leg was my favourite, but none of the tacos blew me away. All in all, a bit meh, but a good option for the area.

Visited today for a birthday meal for the first time since the reopening. An extensive new menu provided plenty options that were not available before, plenty of which being tasty too. Between the 3 of us we had: the steak, squid, cod, pork, thai rib, fried chicken, and crab tacos, as well as the standard fries which we each got a portion of. Overall, the food was pretty good, one or two of the tacos lacks a little bit of flavour, namely the fried chicken and cod ones, but they were mostly very tasty. The service too was nothing short of exemplary, with each of the workers going above and beyond to help, especially with one of us having dietary restrictions. I recommend, and would visit again.

Cool Mexican tapas place with ok food. I feel like the idea of the place is better than the execution. It’s lovely inside with a good atmosphere, but the food was meh. We got the salsa and tortilla chips for starters, and I got a range of vegetarian tacos whilst my partner got the meat tacos. I didn’t particularly like any of the vegetarian tacos, the seitan was undercooked and the texture was awful. I think using different meat alternatives would make it better. My partner liked the pork tacos, but the rest were just okay. The tempura broccoli was awful really, just broccoli coated in heaps of soggy batter. We really enjoyed the smashed garlic potatoes though, they were spectacular. The salsa and tortilla chips were good too. Overall, the sides were mostly great and the tacos were just ok. The atmosphere and decorations are lovely inside though. Service was pretty good too.

Absolutely devastated to be saying goodbye to one of Sunderland’s best spots! So we had to get a final visit in. Food, drinks and service all as superb as ever. Defo the best tacos and margaritas around! I am really excited to try out all of their new ventures across the city ❤️🤍

Absolutely fantastic Mexican "fusion" (is it fusion? I'm not sure but it was delicious) Great atmosphere and service from the off. Food was absolutely outstanding, plates come out fast and hot. The tacos we tried were the Crispy Squid, Korean Pork Belly and Pork Carnitas with some Cray Fish Dirty Fries on the side. Everything was 10/10. Three each was definitely enough but I could've maybe squeezed one more in if I'd have been greedy. Cocktails are superb and the Hell's Pilsner on draft is a tasty drop. We'll be back very soon. Awesome 😙👌 EDIT: been back several times since this review and it's been fantastic every single time. Every taco tried including the new menu (Oct 22) which I've uploaded as there doesn't seem to be a copy online. EDIT 2: still visiting Mexico 70 but tonight was probably out last visit. Nothing to do with the food or service but it's sadly closing its doors. It's been a real pleasure dining here and will be sorely missed. A lovely, quaint spot! Really enjoyed our visit to Mexico70 and will definitely be back. The alcohol menu seems amazing although we didn’t try much. Food is great and the small plates are perfect for a night on the town! Some flavours are questionable; however, the majority of food I did try was lovely. Atmosphere could improve ever so slightly to immerse customers in an authentic mexican experience.

really good food, relatively small portions, but that means you can try lots of different things; the cocktails were also really really nice and staff was so friendly. the place itself has nice low lighting, the space is quite dark, so it immerses you more into the experience

Having been a long time patron of Mexico 70 I'm sorry to leave a poor review. The Taco menu has dwindled down to 6 options, disregarding the 'vegan' options. The loaded fries have disappeared to be replaced by tatertots?? Which were poor, dry & pretty tasteless. Overall a huge disappointment, I'm sorry to say. Change is not always good

I loved this restaurant & have been many many times however if I had known prior to my visit this evening that the menu had changed & what was on it now, I would not have went. Removing firm favourites & replacing them with tasteless new options was very disappointing. Even the sides have changed from chips to children tater tots. The choice of tacos & sides have been reduced so there aren’t many options & the food quality has also gone dow. dramatically. I for one am gutted.

Loved this place, been tonight and and was told there is a new menu! Very disappointed in choice of menu and food quality! No where near as good as previous! There was only 6 tacos to choose from and 1 was off menu! No dirty fries either Was our favourite place in town, not any more

We had been looking forward to visiting here but when we came in at 5.55pm the music was so loud you couldn't have a conversation. There were 3 other people in the restaurant and the lady at the side complained about the noise level to us as well. We were shown promptly to a table and that was it. No one came with a menu or asked us if we wanted a drink. After a few minutes we decided that this wasn't for us and started to leave. The customer on the adjoining table said she was going to do the same. As we left the table, one of the waitresses hastily picked up a couple of menus but we were out of the door by that time. I am really disappointed that we had such a dismal experience. With only 3 people in there, 2 of whom had been served with food, I can't think the staff were rushed off their feet.

Everytime when we visit Sunderland we go to Mexico 70 to have incredible and authentic Mexican food. The little tacos are so creative and delicious. The staff is very friendly and the drinks are nice too. So, we will come back again and again. :-)

Staff were friendly and welcoming, they walked me through the menu. There is a good selection of soft shell tacos on the menu all with a fusion style twist. I ordered a Baja Cod taco which was really tasty but the stand out was the Vietnamese Beef. The meat was tender and well seasoned and every ingredient played a part in bringing together a well rounded dish that I'm still thinking about 2 weeks later. If I lived closer this would be a frequent visit

Very cool place to eat or have some cocktails. We got three Tacos each and some Fries, which was the perfect amount. The service was very friendly and helpful. Each taco is brought out when it is ready, which helps keep things fresh.

The best restaurant in the city centre. Consistently delicious tacos, the crispy pork belly being a personal favourite. Inventive taco choices and regular margarita specials makes it more than worth coming back again and again. Fantastic options for Vegetarians and Vegans. Cool venue and tunes, always a great evening.

Visited here last Monday. Great food. Great drinks. Our server George was amazing- single handedly taking food and drink orders, bringing food out and doing check backs. Nice atmosphere and amazing margaritas. Will be back / although I can’t help feel the stress of only having 2 people on shift tinted the atmosphere a bit. Mr and other diners commented on how stressed the waiter was. We could not relax knowing someone was stressing to bits trying to do everything. In my opinion more staff needed

This place looks less polished than the other restaurants nearby but don't judge a restaurant by it's covers. Once inside it's atmospheric, the staff are friendly helpful and knowledgeable about the food dishes and drinks. So tapa's ordered for two: squid, duck, king prawn, cod, miso chicken, Vietnamese beef and fries side. This was plenty for us two. Each dish was beautifully presented and well cooked. compliments to the chef. We also had Paloma cocktails which were refreshingly nice. Excellent food and atmosphere. Party of 12 very well catered for, service was quick and friendly. I had a query about the bill afterwards which was dealt with very pleasantly and efficiently ( turns out it was my mistake). Will be back!

Mexico 70 sells great taco's and great cocktails. Allow about 90 minutes for your visit. Book in advance via RESY, if going before 7.30pm as the theatre opposite fills the tables before then. Taco Tuesday means you can get some choices of taco's at 3 for £10. The ambience is lively, music is upbeat , and there is a mixture of normal tables with chairs and some high stools at table in the bar area. Staff are good at explaining the menu if needed and attentive without being intrusive. Taco's are like small 6 inch wide, home made flat tortilla's, and you are recommended to get 3 per person which is about right if you have skin-on fries , with or without extra toppings, and some tortilla chips and dips too. 3 of us shared a plate of skin-on fries and 2 dishes of tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole, plus 3 taco's each. That was enough for us and cost about £15 per head. If it wasn't Taco Tuesday, you could add £5 a head to that. The majority of the tacos come with sriracha (which I am told enhances the flavour) but can be ordered without it, thankfully, because I am no fan of the stuff. The tortilla chips are definitely so much better, fresher, crisper and with more corn than anything you can buy in a bag and the dips are fresh and delicious. The green salsa comes with pico de gallo ( finely chopped onion chilli pepper and tomato) has a bit of a kick with a definite coriander background, maybe tomatillo too? The guacamole is smooth and tasty with a hint of garlic and you get a lot for the price of the starter, about £6. Hot bottled sauces are provided to enhance the experience and each one is quite different from the other, my favourites were the chipotle (smoky one) and the jalopeno. The taco's came with a decent amount of filling in each, more than last time I think, and the combination of protein, vegetable and sauces are well thought out and combine beautifully. I had the crispy miso chicken, with asian slaw, miso crema and spring onions. Good quality chicken pieces, definitely crispy chicken - maybe panko breadcrumbs on them. I also had the baja cod, which is a chunky piece of good quality battered fish, with pea and mint mole, tartare crema and crispy capers. Classic combinations in a taco. Star of the show for me was vietnamese beef taco with thin rounds of red piquillo pepper, and crispy shallots. I dont know what was vietnamese about it , but it was the tastiest shreds of shin beef ever , which tasted even better with the shallots. The only downside to this venue is that there do not serve desserts or coffee and while I appreciate that this allows them to turn the tables more quickly in this 30 or so seater , busy, excellent place, something else to finish the night off would be most welcome.

Very Tasty food, Great selection of Drinks including margaritas. Food was prompt and delivered as each dish was ready, which allowed us to talk between each taco serving. Would recommended to friends for someone for a bite before drinks or theatre.

Delicious fresh food, brill atmosphere and great service. This is a Mexican Tapas style restaurant where 3 taco Tapas each is recommended. Theres a large variety of Tapas. I had muergez, prawn and the vietnamese beef. Each was generous and full of fresh flavours. We shared nachos with delicious guac and loaded fries which were cooked to perfection. Three tacos for £9.99 on Tuesdays is an excellent deal. The cocktail menu looked great too. I loved the fun but moody atmosphere. My friend and I relaxed for the evening chatting and nibbling. Great for foodies and fans of casual dining. Recommend!

The rustic decor and friendly service make this a great place to visit before a show at the Empire Theatre. The tequila menu (get the Don Julio Reposado!) and tacos are tasty and help to get the evening (and the party) started.

We were here for dinner on St Patrick's Day and I wish we had gone elsewhere. Apart from being rushed all through our meal, which was quite expensive in relation to portion size, my husband asked to use the disabled toilet as the main toilets...

My sister and I had the best cocktails ever at this place…somewhat unexpected, but the chilli pineapple margaritas on special when we visited were exceptionally crafted and designed. Looking forward to going for food.

After reading all the great reviews I was really looking forward to our first visit... Unfortunately it wasn't all that!! Don't get me wrong, it wasn't horrible but when I see an average rating of 4.7 I'm expecting great things or at least great food! I'm still a bit confused actually but that may be my age catching up on me... The two young ladies that served us, were pleasant enough, polite even which is not guaranteed in this day and age Unfortunately... We were pretty disappointed at the non alcoholic drink options my wife had an orange cordial and water which is what it is and me a pineapple juice which looked like I had just emptied my bladder and the temperature of it was very similar... Probably the worst pineapple juice I've ever had... even stealing my wife's ice didn't help much.... I would hope they will give some thought to adding a few non alcoholic cocktails to the menu. So my wife had the crispy miso seitan taco which was pleasant enough, it wasn't that crispy, and we felt for the money they were all lacking garnish which adds to the overall freshness and flavour of each bite. She had the Baja cod taco for her 2nd and again it was ok. I had the Korean Pork Belly which was the biggest disappointment for me personally when eating pork belly I want it to be juicy and the fat to melt in my mouth but it was overcooked dry and chewy, maybe the chef knew because it was swamped with sciraca sauce I could not taste any other ingredients even squeezing half a lime on it couldn't help gandhis flip flop.... The 2nd I had and by far the best was the crispy duck not sure I tasted scotch bonnet marmalade but it was fresh, zingy and well cooked and delicious... We shared my 3rd sesame and ginger king prawn, The prawn I would suggest is a brought in generic product, not very tasty and slightly overcooked again seriously lacking a bit of inventinvous and flavour... also shared the crayfish filthy fries which were probably for me the most underwhelming thing we ate, apparently parmesan cheese tastes and melts like mozzarella because thats what we had on our fries no flavour and for £6.50 definitely not worth my money... My confusion is still about, so maybe not my age but the way the food is brought to your table I wouldn't of thought 5 tacos and some fries would be hard to serve at the same time but my wife had her 1st taco served and eaten before we got 2 more then a random amount of time for one and then another and our fries came well after the tacos were eaten..... Just seemed a bit disjointed.... They were not super busy so yeah still confused... Room for some improvements in my opinion.

Really, really good food. Cocktails were excellent and interesting, and the service was spot on. The soft shell taco with pulled beef was unreal! Really good vegan options too. Only thing I'd not order again was the guac -£6 for a few nachos and guac when you can get more chips or another taco for less!

Had a table for 2 booked for half 7 on a Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary. I tried to call to say we were running a little late but there's no phone number online anywhere. After arriving only 8 minutes late and being shown to the table, there was no urgency from the staff to take our food order, until at 7:55, a waiter came over to apologize for an error in the booking system, that someone else had booked our table for 8:45, but to say that we should still have time for food. This made the whole meal feel rushed and stressful. We ordered and the food came pretty quickly, but mid way through eating the same waiter came back at about 8:25 to say we needed to move to finish eating at the counter (55 mins in). This was completely unnecessary as we would clearly be finished in 20 mins, and there's no way we should be expected to move under an hour after arriving, mid-mouthful, for other hypothetical customers not in the building. And then after we did finish the staff showed no urgency to clear the table or offer the bill, so why come over and hassle us?! As it turned out, we were done at 8:45 anyway, at which point there were 6 free tables and no customers ever arrived ... Upon raising this issue, no members of staff showed any sincerity or offered their apologies. Instead they tried to say we hadn't read the booking properly. The booking certainly doesn't say we had to move after 55 mins, and if you look at Resy, it actually says tables after 7:30 on Saturdays get two hours!! All in all service was a real shame because the food is great, but next time we'll go somewhere we aren't stressed and hassled by the staff.

We ate here for a pre theatre lunch, it was fab! We got 3 tacos each (as recommended) and shared fries and tempura broccoli. Really tasty food!

Had heard this place was worth a trip from friends, not usually something I would go for but I am so pleased I gave it a try. Can't wait for my next Mexico 70.

For a place called Mexico 70 all they sell is tacos. No burritos, quesadillas, chalupas or chimichangas. Don't get me wrong the food was a good quality and taste, but the menu is very limited and quite pricey too at £4.50 a taco which they recommend 3 per person (gone in about 3 or 4 bites) I think if they expanded the menu I'd go back, but now I've had the tacos there's nothing else I feel personally to take me back.

Food was average. Server very disrespectful and rude to my friend (the only guy), and made us all uncomfortable. Ended the night on a bad note.

If i could give 0 stars i would, we were served by George who came off as very arrogant (cocky). As for the food part tapas were 5-6£ each which served one bite only, this isn't the problem, my main thing is that the food did not taste good at all, on the verge of being disgusting. Then towards the end when we asked for the bill, Mr, George the waiter was extremely disrespectful. A discount was given to the two girls who were with me and when I asked for it myself his response was "I dont know you why would I give you a discount" now this is extremely unprofessional to say and also very sexist, being a guy between my two girl friends. I also payed triple the amount that my friends did despite ordering similar things. Terrible experience made us all feel very uncomfortable. I would not recommend it to anyone at all. The only reason I would go back is to speak to the manager to file a formal complaint.

Would highly recommend, came for a Mexican left with a mouthful eclectic flavours from around the globe. Impeccable service and great music. A must visit for sure, if I only I could give it 6 stars.

Having been intrigued by the Mexican tacos and following their social media, a post online of the soft shell crab taco had me hot footing along for a tea time treat. We ordered loaded nachos to share and three tacos each from the extensive menu, the staff were very friendly and helpful making suggestions and checking for any food allergies or veggie/vegan leanings. I must say the nachos were delicious, freshly cooked and really really loaded. Five meat tacos and the aforementioned soft shelled crab came along when they were ready as everything is cooked to order, small plates, well presented and a bargain. Delicious. I'll have to return, the wings looked fantastic on the next table and the veggie options will delight the small child. I can't recommend this place enough.

5 stars is not high enough. Mexico 70 is God's gift to Mexican food. It is so good, it should be illegal. Just visit here, it is class. I promise.

Great service - food very good in the main. The service was very friendly and professional. The food itself was excellent in parts but average in others. The taco fillings were delicious as were the filthy fries. The tacos were quite stodgy though and unappealing. The standard fries were just that. The nachos that came with the refried Beans were inedible. On the whole was a good meal but not exceptional as we anticipated.

First visit here before a show at The Empire recommended by my daughter. Very friendly imformative staff, explaining everything about the food. The recommended 3 tacos and a side which i thought wouldnt be enough so we opted for crayfish fries to. Every meal was absolutely delicious and the service was so quick. I shouldnt have worried about not having enough to eat because we struggled with the fries. We wete absolutely stuffed with the tastiest 3 dishes we've had in a long time. It was delicious.

Holy cow. What a place. Loved it. Went in on a bit of a whim, they were fully booked by the looks of things but staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and sat me by the window. Food was super fresh and very well made. 3 vegan tacos and some tortilla chips with refried beans (well recommended!) was just right. Clearly a place that is passionate about its food, drinks and most importantly it’s customers. Amazing.

Third time visiting yesterday, basically tried the full menu by this point. Can't recommend this place enough. Food, drinks, service and atmosphere have been faultless every time. Impressive 3:2 meat:vegan taco ratio, without skimping on vegan options for sides and extras. In my experience, it's rare that a restaurant that has so many meat options that they execute vegan dishes to an equally high standard (my partner is vegan). The tacos themselves are well and truly the main event with each encompassing bold flavours, with every element balanced - no flavour or component being lost in the mix. The menu is definitely Mexican fusion, with alot of Asian inspiration, but we're here for it. We're always impressed, and will continue visiting from Durham when we can - it's worth the journey!

A must visit in Sunderland! Couldn't fault the staff with how friendly and informative they were. The owner took our food order and suggested complimentary dishes to what we were ordering which definitely upgraded our meals. We got 3 tacos each, 3 sides, 2 fries and extra bread between 3 of us which was way too much, I think 1 fries and 2 sides would have been better suited. Excited to visit again!

Our go to place when eating in Sunderland. Food is amazing and they sell pints of beer instead of you being forced to drink bottles of overpriced lager. Recommend the Asian beef loaded fries.
