Merrymaid Bar and Grill in Birmingham

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Merrymaid Bar and Grill in Birmingham, and it was well worth the trip from Leicester! Everything from the food to the service was absolutely spot on, making it a dining experience to remember. The Fish Pakora was a standout – perfectly crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside. The balance of spices was just right, offering a burst of flavor in every bite. The Chicken Jalfrezi was another highlight, with succulent pieces of chicken cooked to perfection in a rich, spicy sauce that had just the right amount of heat. The freshness of the ingredients really shone through, and it was clear that a lot of care had gone into the preparation of the dishes. The service was exceptional as well. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure that every aspect of our meal was enjoyable. The atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable, perfect for a relaxed evening out. Overall, Merrymaid Bar and Grill exceeded my expectations in every way. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone, and I can confidently say it’s worth the travel – even from Leicester! Hats off to the waiting staff who were great and friendly as well as the bar and kitchen staff who were also amazing.

Me and my boyfriend discovered this place a few months ago, and have been coming here frequently ever since. The food is amazing every time, and the value for money is incredible. The mixed grill, the curries, the naan bread, honestly they never miss. Absolutely little hidden gem.

Disappointing. Quantity over quality. I had the mixed grill and it was covered in red food dye. The meats were indistinguishable apart from their texture. Masala chips were poor and bread middling.

Never been so embarrassed the barman demanded he kept my card as he thought we’d do a runner,not a good experience

We been here for many years with my family and have brought in so many other people because we like the quality of the food . However on our last visit we were very disappointed because we got some drinks before our food and my auntie knocked over HALF A PINT because of how close the door and table are . Tha man was so unhelpful and charged us again for the half pint . I meant for not even £3 this guy has lots customers . We celebrated birthdays , graduations , get together . My mum goes at least once a week . It’s a shame to see places run by these greedy people that would rather have £3 than good customer service .

Excellent food and drink!! Staff were lovely. Outside it looks a bit messy an run down - easily fixed if they tidied out the front. Highly recommended the food!!

It's the best place for a sit down and chat. But also the food is out of this world. The chicken tikka masala with cheese chips and naan bread is the best thing on that menu. It can get a bit crazy with all the people but there is a huge family room in the back that is perfect for children.

How the covered wagon got desi pub of the year I have no idea.ive been to both places and the merrymaid beats it hands down for authentic curry and grill.you don't have to ask for any fresh chilli to make your food hot and spicy as its already in the sauce.i would eat here every week if I lived a bit closer,and the lucky locals do.the waitresses are very good at what they do nothing is too much trouble.can't wait to go back

We did not have any food. The landlord and landlady are very friendly and welcoming. Next time we will dine to experience the Indian cuisine.

Unbelievable food and value for money, this is what was left over from 5 people after a good hour of going at it doggy bags were needed. Everything on the mixed grill was lovely but especially the lamb chops and tandoori chicken were to die for. Make no mistake we will be back for more.

Had a fantastic Madras chicken curry.. friend had a tandoori mixed grill dishes were excellent 👌🏽. Staff very friendly and helpful in advising what dishes to choose. Brilliant! thank you, and we will definitely be back.

This place the food was top notch. When you first go in, bit misleading with smallish front pub area. You go down the side and the back of the bar a more ample seating area is there. Food wise, really enjoyed the boneless mixed grill. Good portion size for two, and so delicious. For mains we shared a lamb bhuna curry. Again superb with a rich ,thick flavoursome sauce with large chunks of lamb. We went for the plain naan which was cooked well. We will be back here again. They also do takeaways, and serve array of vegetarian dishes.

Had a wonderful time during my visit, the friendly staff have a genuine warmth, making you feel right at home as soon as you step through the door. The chilli chips are a must try. So fantastic to see so many great vegetarian options and the portion sizes are super generous.

A proper Indian pub. Traditional. Not the nicest looking of places at all, but that's exactly what you want to keep the "high-standard" individuals OUT of the place and keep the proper Indians like myself IN. It doesn't matter if you are Hindu, Sikh, White, Black; the owner and bar lady were extremely nice to us. The owner overheard the bad experience we had at the previous eatery we had just came from and quickly assured us this would be good... And it was. My friend who doesn't usually like Butter Chicken said it was one of the best he's had and was licking his oddly shaped fingers... My "White British" friend who has the taste buds of a true Indian Warrior was swallowing his bites whole without chewing, that's how highly he rated this food. He was so mesmerized by the food that he proceeded to pick up the wrong pint glass and started drinking from it, because he was feeling so euphoric. It was a natural aphrodisiac for him, that's all I can say. Brilliant curries, brilliant staff, no nonsense place but please do not be put off by the looks of the place. Cobra was top class as well unlike other terrible pints of Cobra I've had in the past. Will come again 100%.

Pure vibes! The owner comes down to london to get treatment from us and he has always said when I’m in Birmingham come down and have a mixed grill….. I have ended up ordering 2 mixed grills to take back to london because we do not get this value in London ! I am only going to be eating here when I’m in bham

Ordered for collection and was unable to pay card? Although I can pay by card at the bar and when I’ve come before, the food was for my wife who’s pregnant and I feel as if the service was very bad and could of easily been resolved but instead I had to walk away without my partners food and went elsewhere instead, I’ll never be coming back or recommending this place again.

Love this place!!! Food is immaculate and portion sizes are HUGE!!! If you’re ordering a small grill for 2 people, don’t order anything else unless you’re super hungry that day😂

bar staff are unable to manage the normal friendly and professional things that make a bar run. example serve you first then tell you minimum charge on a card an be smart about it. asking do you need glasses. minimum charge in what's heading to a cashless society. i you go loo your drink gets pushed aside and you get to find another seat.. again bar staff should be focussed who is in charge customers or staff. atmosphere poor avoid is my advice. been there 3 times .

Seen so many people raving about this place, I've been meaning to visit for a while. Finally got round to it. Firstly you see a lot of reviews talking about the interior, but I actually don't mind it. It brings back memories of how these places used to be before they took off. You definitely won't see young ladies dressing up and posing against botanical feature walls for Instagram in here. The beer selection is very basic, no craft ales, but again, that adds to the nostalgic feel of the old time Desi Pubs. The Mixi is what I was here for, and it lived up to the hype. The only thing that was a bit iffy was the masala chips, but who honestly really cares about those? The lamb chops on the grill were the best I've ever had anywhere. The curry was flavoursome and looked natural unlike everywhere else that throws in red colouring. Portions were big and prices were very reasonable. Service was great. Didn't even have to ask for a menu, was handed two immediately as I bought drinks at the bar. I would definitely be a regular if I lived closer, and I look forward to another visit soon...

Visited in a Friday evening off the back of a friends recommendation. We arrived and the place was very busy, whole building was packed out. We hadn't booked so our hopes weren't high for getting a table - spoke to the lovely waitress who confirmed they were fully booked. After waiting around for a few minutes while thinking of where else to go, we were told a table.had just cleared up and we could go on in - success! We were seated and grabbed some drinks from the bar while browsing the menu. Myself & my partner went for the fish pakora to share fot starter (light spice, moist fish, so good!), and our friends went for the lamb chops. For main, I opted for the fish curry (bloody lovely! A bit of a kick but very yummy). Enjoyed every bit of our food and will definitely be returning. Be sure to bring an appetite as the portion sizes are really generous! I had enough to take home and have for dinner the next day! Yum!

Attended as a group of 5 but I've been before. Food is excellent and delivered quickly. There was a bit of confusion over ordering as I couldn't remember if we needed to order at the bar but that was just the drinks. I'm a real ale drinker but was happy with Cobra. Staff are lovely and really friendly. Again, the food was delicious. Will be back.

I just happened to visit this bar, a few months ago, while visiting Currys next door and wow, I was so blown away! The food was so delicious and the service was also great! Since then, I have visited a couple more times and yesterday, being my birthday, I also chose here for my birthday meal (and I can be picky at times)! I am never disappointed with the quality of the food and the service and pleasant atmosphere makes you want to visit again and again.

Excellent desi grill pub. The pub itself isn't anything extra special, no cask ale, just your standard assortment of lager, smooth bitter, Guinness etc.. but the reason most people visit the Merrymaid is for the food, which is delicious and represents great value for money

Warm, friendly atmosphere with good honest food. The starters were excellent, a lovely Rita, crisp poppadoms and a nice chutney and pickle. The fish pakoras were delicious, crispy and a perfect amount of spice to them. The mixed Grill was excellent, I didn't expect anything else, as I'd heard lots of good things. Succulent range of meats all spiced deliciously. The curries were also excellent, with the chef allowing us to adapt one of the curries which was great. The naan's were also very tasty. Our experience here was excellent and I will definitely be returning.

Food is excellent, not a posh place, but fabulous value for money. The portions are so big we ended up taking away half the food we ordered, food is so good we couldn't just leave it there.

Best mixed grill in Birmingham, we always get a large mix grill, chilli chicken if you like spice this is the best and a curry to share ! Best food around great friendly service also
