Merchants Fish Bar in Wyre Forest

I was at the Severn Valley Railway Spring Diesel Festival yesterday, and every time I was at the Bewdley station, people were chomping down on the most amazing smelling and looking fish and chips. I eventually asked someone where they were from, and it was Merchants Bewdley. So I found myself in a very busy queue at 2015 last night, and it was a well deserved queue well worth waiting in. I had their Large Haddock Special meal, at £12. They also had a £6 and £8 option, prices shown in the photos below. Whilst the fish doesn't look that big, it was really thick, and beautiful. The batter was crisp and dry. It had been cooked specially for me, as I'd ordered the large. The chips were spot on. Odd to say, but probably the best salt and vinegar I've ever had 🤷 One thing that I will say is that the meal comes with "sauce". Not knowing what sauce options they had when asked which I wanted, I was told curry, gravy. peas or beans. So sauce is clearly sides in this part of the UK 😂. That said, an American behind me in the queue asked for tartar, and got it without correction, which I thought a little naughty. I didn't see what she got, maybe it was a tub of home made tartar rather than Heinz. I went with curry. It was nice, but a bit powdery, as though not mixed properly. Didn't put me off though. Would I return, definitely. I'll be taking a walk over there at lunch time the next time I'm at a SVR event. This was far better than my experience at The magpie in Whitby, supposedly one of the best in the country, last weekend.

Food is great the fish & Chips are class however I didn't like that sweet curry sauce the taste it was so wrong, The chicken is great but battered sausage has no taste at all and the Savaloys are perfect. Chips are first class but they didn't put enough salt & vinegar on for taking out. Would I go again well yes but you need to start doing Donner Kebabs again.

The scallops were paper thin so like eating just batter and soggy batter at that. I folded it in to 4 and ate it in one bite. Never in my life seen scallops like that!

We eat here every 6 weeks or so so. Always have the seniors special. Great value and all the staff are lovely and friendly. Great view of the river if you're lucky enough to get a seat facing it. It does get busy for obvious reasons.

Very nice f+c set pensioner deal at a good price for fish and chips. Apparently you need to tell the waitress who takes your order if you want the peas and the b+butter which l found odd.

Chips were a bit undercooked, cod was fine, not the biggest or cheapest, but it was okay - but what really took the mickey was the 'bread and butter' or should I just describe it as 2 pieces of dry bread with the tiniest bit of some type of spreadable, VERY thinly 'spead' in the centre of the slice!

Not as good as I remember it. Fish size was good but way too greasy.

We ate outside by the river. Food didn't disappoint.

Best I've had this year easily beating Knights of Glastonbury who were voted number one. I had large cod meal that included a curry sauce.. Will certainly make a return visit when I'm on the area.

Recently went here with the grandbabies, young alfie started choking on a battered chippy chip and the diva with the red auburn bun performed a heimlich maneuver and saved his life! How sweet! P.S go easy on the salt as it is very salty!!!!

We ate in and had the Faggotts. The faggotts were undercooked, chips were cold, gravy cold and tasteless. The only nice part were the mushy peas. This used to be an excellent fish and chip restaurant sorry but not anymore or maybe it was an off day.

It was at the Thai restaurant above the merchant Rami . Wrong food brought out smaller portion when they got it right. Slow service. Vegetable really hard

Ate in today...fish and chips with tea and bread and butter..£11. 50 for pensioners....generous servings....fish chips and mushy peas to die for...will definitely make it a regular x9

Delicious food, great atmosphere, I have never eaten better fish. If you are in the area and don't visit this place, it's a mistake ;) Don't go to any fast food places, just eat here.

Food is really good if you get there before 7.00, after that it’s limited and what’s left is ropey. Service is pretty bad, depending on who serves you depends on portion size, they leave you standing there without acknowledgment , place could be run alot better.

Lovely experience came all the way from Turkey🇹🇷 to try this famous fish and chips and wasn't disappointed Good value friendly Staff we opted for the Restaurant as it was bitter cold but would be lovely to sit out side by the River

Lovely chip shop right by the river severn they do battard chips as well I'm sure I've seen our server on Facebook we had the chicken and battard chips cooked fresh like everything in this place nice and clean inside can be a que parking limited in the tesco car park or a couple of streets up toilets a couple of streets up disabled access okay but a big step brilliant service 😀 love the chips sign

You need to open at 11am 11.30am too long to wait

You can sit in or take away fish is lovely .expensive compared to other chip shops but you are next to a river with lots of tourists .closes early on a night . Discard your boxes and paper well as the sea gulls have a field day lol

I live 20 minutes from Bewdley and took my daughter to the famed fish bar (yes..the hype on social media attracted us). But I was delighted that the food was excellent, the service exemplary and the experience was memorable. My daughter has autism and was happy to chat to the staff (we dined in). Happily recommend Merchants Fish Bar.

Had a large and medium cod & chip meal,they were brilliant,the chips were great and the cod tasty with brilliant crispy batter and some great curry sauce,they were the best we have had in my memory and cooked fresh to order. We just need to find a reason to return to Bewdley, preferably not on a cold Saturday night when we have to sit in the car to eat them in a car park.

Went in at 16:00. Ordered the mini Haddock meal with chips and gravy (lots of salt and vinegar). Had to wait 5 minutes for them to freshly cook the fish. Total time from ordering to eating was under 10 minutes. Fish was nice, and the batter was crispy. Chips were decent, with a mix of nice fat chips and small scraps. Smothered in gravy, it was a filling meal. Value is spot on at £6. Recommended.

Great fish and chips, come here a couple of times per year and it's always consistent. Got off the Seven Valley Railway and walked over to get some chips and mushy peas, loved it. Will you again soon

Hi, popped in to New Year’s Eve had large cod chips curry sauce, had to wait five or so minutes fish cooked fresh chips the same absolutely gorgeous sat by river shared with wife great end to nice walk . Happy new year .

Have been coming here for years and is quite simply, the best fish and chips in the Midlands, if not the whole country! Staff always friendly, but the highlight is the food. Fish is of a superb quality, always tastes fresh and very tasty batter. Onion rings are also really good and definitely worth ordering on the side! However the highlight is the chips, they are absolutely brilliant, taste amazing and would also highly recommend the battered chips. A lot of places try and fail to offer battered chips, but Merchants get them right every time. They also have benches right alongside the river which is great to sit out at on a sunny summers day, have never ate inside but I’m sure that is good too.

couldn’t order cos this guy pushed in with a camera ordering a mini haddock meals and fish and chips. the diva behind the counter seemed like she was being held at gunpoint with how she spoke. i’m partially blind so asked “is that cherry coke” and she replied “what does it look like?”. i would return because in the mini haddock meal you get chips sauce and a mini haddock! 🤷🏼‍♀️

We stopped when passing Friday around 4.30-5pm ish and wasn't busy so didn't have to wait long. Had cod, chips & curry sauce and tasted amazing. The kids had chips and curry sauce and a large portion was massive, very good value for money.

Came here whilst on the way to holyhead to catch the ferry to Dublin. What an amazing little fish and chips shop. Better than binley mega chippy for miles. The chips were crunchy and perfectly cooked and the gravy was perfect texture. Will definitely come back soon.

After getting my silk press, I had that feeling when knee surgery is tomorrow. I decided to treat myself to a MINI HADDOCK MEAL. Upon searching for a nice place to eat, I clicked hide icons, but I could still see this restaraunt. Upon entering the vicinity I was greeted with another woman working the counter. I quickly said “Oh no no no, do not even think about serving me.” and proceeded to point to her and say “Mama, a girl behind you.” she gave me a “WHAT I DO 💙 “ stare but proceeded to let the blond girl take my order. I said “Who is this DIVA 💙” and she replied “Would you like a mini haddock meal with curry sauce” I payed with that FaceCard because it never declines. We got into a full conversation before I realized I was running late for Ellie and MASON House. I quickly said “Just put my fish and chips in the back” and she replied “HMM”. 10/10 service. User868739176690 literally predicted that this was would be BUSSIN and boy were they correct. The food made me crash out Hawk Tuah over it before getting a low taper fade Will definitely be back 👏

I saw this restaurant on the clock app and HAD to get myself one of those mini haddock meals. Although I was overseas, Diva Dest 💜transformed into a mermaid 🧜‍♀️ and swam 🏊‍♀️ all the way down to my country and delivered it to me. Came here last weekend with my boyfriend, we both ordered the haddock meals, the batter was falling off of the fish before we had even got home, clearly had been sat out for a while, the chips were definitely not cooked through as still hard in the middle, customer service was appalling and an overall miserable atmosphere, i wouldn’t recommend

came here with my kids last weekend as i decided to try a new chippy. i got some cod and chips (wouldn’t recommend) i ended up being on the toilet all night!! curry sause was alright but far too runny for my liking. not a very good experience.
