It’s hard to see why any legitimate shop would be cash only these days. I expect it puts off a few customers like it put me off.

The shop is spotless and everything is cooked to order. Yes it is expensive but the quality is first class. The portions are large and the quality is constant. Not taking cards is an issue these days.

I went to Macoys fish & chips on saturday 29 august around 7pm There was a covid19 social distancing notice by the door There were 3 employees working behind the counter, the older man was doing the frying, the younger guy and girl were taking money and serving. The young guy took my money and tbem went on to scooping chips out of the hotplate and putting them into wrappings. The young girl was also taking money preparing bags and the takeaway dishes the fish and chips are served on. I saw one customer put her coins on the counter and the young girl scoop them up before putting them in the till. At no time did i see hand washing or the use of sanitizing gel. The counter was not cleaned or sanitized. In my opinion, in these uncertain times with covid19, only one person should handle money and not touch food. The other should serve food but not touch money.

This review is a result of the Crong Explorer Scouts who conducted their annual chip survey last night in the Berkhampstead area which I contributed to. "Really nice staff, perfect temperature chips and good amounts of salt and vinegar"

More staff needed at busy times. 40 minutes is far too long to be expected to wait for Fish & Chips. Food tasted ok once we got it but we are not in a hurry to return for fear of the dreaded wait.

Moved into the area fairly recently and been looking for a good fish and chip shop. Have had some poor and some ok from other local alternatives. Have to say the fish and chips from here are more than just good they’re excellent. Batter was light and crisp and chips were good too. Very happy and will now only buy from McCoy’s in future.

Family takeaway, 3 Cod fillets were thick, flakey, fresh and with thin crispy batter. Chips were chunky clean and perfectly cooked. Best I’ve had in many years.

Mc Coys is the best fish and chip shop in the area reason because everything is cooked while you wait which means the fish is wonderful and always hot. we buy my Mother fish and chips on a Thursday which she enjoys very much.

This is a fish and chip shop , so the chips should be good ! under cooked, soggy, in the whole packet not one crispy!! got two stars as the lady i was served by was really polite and the portion was good - but im afraid when you fail at the product your selling its kind of pointless

Went in for two pieces of fish, a portion of chips and a curry sauce at 6.30 on a Tuesday evening. There was no fish, no roe, no steak & kidney pies, one fish cake, maybe three spring rolls, two beef &onion pies, one chicken & mushroom pie and maybe twelve saveloys in a tray of what I assumed to be boiling water. It wasn't. Ended up with a beef & onion pie (okay), a strange gloopy curry sauce, two stone cold saveloys and a miniscule portion of chips. Didn't realise the saveloys were cold until we got them back to our cottage about five minutes later, Microwaved them. Haven't found a good chippy round here. Last time we went looking at about 8.30 one night a fortnight ago, we went to three, none of whom had any fish ready but they would cook while you wait. In the third one we waited for the fish to be cooked, it was okay but small. I might have given them three stars. That seems to be the standard in this area. Really need to find a better chippy now that we've moved down here.

Cracking little chippy in Northchurch. We ordered 7 medium cod and chips. Obviously this order takes a while to produce. Not a problem at McCoy's as you can relax on the faux leather armchairs whilst enjoying a subtitled show on the TV. Lovely fish and chips with batter as golden as the fryer's hair. Chips were crispy and piping hot. A good option. Do it.

Great refurbished shop width friendly staff, had to wait around 15 minutes, but it was well worth the wait. Fish was freshly cooked to order and tasted amazing, chips were so nice, and got to watch the tv while I waited. I've tried a lot of fish and chips from around England, and this was the best I've had!

This is a wonderful find for everyone who have someone who is Gluten Free, the frier is on thurs- sat & any other night you just have to call 1/2 hour in advance and they will switch it on to cook just for you, also if more notice is given they I'll even source Gluten Free sausages for you.The service is very friendly & helpful with a unique frier, utensils & batter for just Gluten free customers. I myself am not Gluten intolerant but my daughter is, but I tried the Gluten free batter & can say I actually preferred it, it was light & crispy .Also for any other Scots living down here it's the only chippy I have found that skins the fish totally before putting into the batter! Brilliant it's only taken us 2 years, although its normal in Scotand apparently it's not the done thing down here.

Waited a long time in a queue for our fish and chips. When we got home, our fish was overcooked and dry. My husband telephoned - they denied that the fish would be overcooked, so my husband wrote to them with a photo of the fish - no reply!Consequently since they ognored us, we ignore them and go elsewhere.

When you plan a meal for ten people around the fact that McCoys does gluten free fish and chips for one of our group....and the they tell you they do Gluten free EXCEPT the day after a bank holiday or when there's an R in the month...and don't expect us to tell you when it's not on, you can go off a place. And we have. So we took our order for 9 ordinary fish and chips to the one by the station and sorte out something else for our poor coeliac. McCoys needs to be more open with its advertising of food it doesn't always have available, or else everyone's disappointed (except the station chippy, obviously).

This is a basic chippy with no frills. The chips are generaly fair but tend to be on the greasy side. Certainly not the best I have ever had. Fish batter also could be better and often the whole ensemble ends up being a soggy mess in the paper bag when I get home. I think they need to review their methods.I have lived in Berkhamsted for many years and have used this chippy regularly. However not because of the quality but rather because it was the only one it town. Now however there is serious competition as a year or so ago a new chippy opened up next to the station and frankly they make much better Fish and Chips
