This is a very unusual place. The bar area is really nice, the room next door has more unusual decor with hand painted murals and random mannequins, but don't let that put you off as the food is great. Ordered a selection of tapas, and loved it. The chicken with the barbecue sauce, the butterbean stew and the onion rings were highlights. Also, the bread they brought at the start was so good. Good food and fast service, would return again.

Excellent value and great food.

Took advantage of the tapas Thursday night offer. Hadn't booked in advance and they were busy but we were still welcomed in. Service was brilliant,food was perfect and the bill was incredibly reasonable

Just had the Thursday night tapes special, was absolutely amazing, I asked about gluten free options and was told that virtually everything was available gf, not too many places can say that,add to that the friendly staff and you're in for a great time, highly recommended 👍

Fantastic dog friendly pub and restaurant! We’ve been into the bar a few times before but yesterday was our first time trying the restaurant. We hadn’t booked but were quickly seated anyway. The service was brilliant - no waiting about to have order taken and drinks were with us within minutes. We ordered a variety of tapas (6 plates based on the waitress suggestion of 2-3 per person) and each dish was excellent. Again it was all served incredibly fast and we were given some bread and butter for the minimal wait until the plates were brought out. I was astonished by the price, £52 including our drinks, I was expecting to pay much more for what we had. Afterwards we went through to the bar section and I left to collect the dog. It’s incredibly dog friendly with staff regularly fussing the dog, providing treats and water. The owner also informed us that all food from restaurant could be served in the bar area where we could have our dog with us which is great to know for next time. Atmosphere in the bar is great and everyone is very friendly. Live music from 8:30 which was brilliant.

What an amazing find in Carnoustie. The tapas menu was extensive and our choices were absolutely delicious. Service and decor outstanding. The chef Patrice made sure our meals were to our liking and came out to chat. What an absolute delight! This evening was above our expectations and we would definitely recommend.

Great entertainment but a bit disorganised.

We were staying in the Carnoustie Golf hotel but they had kitchen issues so we came here. Lovely restaurant and the girl who served us was great and really friendly. Didn't catch her name. We ate on Satuday 28th Oct. The food was brilliant except the mussles. Far too greasy in our opinion. Mussles shouldnt be tampered with to much. Keep in the shells and serve in a fine sauce of some kind. We did mention this to the chef but didn't seem to bother and they didn't take it off our bill which was annoying as we didn't eat it. Anyway it was only that one dish which again, our opinon. We totally recommend this restaurant. We were going to go to the bar next door and watch the live music but my wife was feeling great as she had a migraine earlier that day. Gutted as it would of been good. Also the restaurant had a great selection of craft beer. More places need to be like that.

The food is so good and there is a great choice of menu to pick from. All the food is so tasty and flavoursome. The drinks consist of a large variety too and the atmosphere is great.

The atmosphere, staff and food was lovely. Alley has developed a decadent starters and entrees. His staff, including Kate, his mom and others were so impressive.We enjoyed mussels, Prawns ( 2x ) calamari, and a sirloin. A lovely Italian Rose . Everything was perfect. We give this five stars. We have been coming to this area of Scotland for several years ago and truly believe this is a rare Gem. Thank you Alley for your great service.

Tapas and music. Great night out

We booked at very short notice but they accommodated six of us. Very friendly staff. The food was really lovely. Six clean plates for both starters and main courses. Such a lovely place to spend an evening.

Recommended by the info desk at Carnoustie Champ. Course. What a good choice. Restaurant is casual but a little upscale (not in price), clean, well decorated and inviting. Service, by Emilia, was top notch. She was friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and continually checking on us, but not over watching. Good bar selection of cocktails, beers on tap and bottles. After several fish-n-chip stops the last 10 days, I thought I was done. But Emilia’s honest recommendation we’re right-on. Extra large, very light batter and great flavor. Fresh local fish, not a frozen box off the truck. Other menu items were also very good portions, prices and flavorful. Ali, the owner, was very gracious with his time, local knowledge, recommendations for the area and info about the three local courses. This is a highly recommended restaurant.

Visited for drink last Thursday, staff lovely and attentive. Left my rucksack there and staff looked after it till I got it back the following evening. Highly recommend it. Lovely place for a drink and a blether.

Back at my Carnoustie favourite on a quiet, chilled (music to match) Sunday afternoon. Enjoyed a glass of delicious Apericena Appassimento and some fresh crusty bread while my starters of mussels in Pernod was prepared. The mussels arrived, big and juicy, pipping hot, garlicky but just nicely so, still a nice wee kick off Pernod too bring the flavours together. Maker sure you keep the bread on hand for soaking up the butter, yum! Next came the sirloin steak, I prefer medium rare. It was perfectly medium rare, with perhaps some kind of pepper crust added for an excellent touch on texture. Chips and salad complimented this, but did not compete with main event. Pepper sauce was a creamy spot on accompaniment. I have no room for desserts, but an espresso martini cocktail finishes the meal off, providing both coffee and dessert.

No reservation made but based upon advertised opening hours we called in to be told that, no, sorry the kitchen isn’t open. This was 8pm. Would have taken 10 seconds to put a note at the door to explain that “something” had happened and kitchen was closed. Indian restaurant next door was excellent.

Food was amazing here and service from the waitress was first class, some of the best I’ve experienced. Would highly recommend if visiting the area.

I had a friend visiting from down south, she loves Spanish food so we chose Maxibell. Huge mistake from beginning to end! The food was terrible, mostly deep fried and not inexpensive. The server never stopped telling us he was the owner, who shouldn't have been serving that evening but his daughter blah blah blah. Not my problem, not interested in his. He was right about one thing, he shouldn't have been serving - his skills left much to be desired. Really won't try this place again no matter how many people tell me how greta it is - that's not been my experience! BTW, it was absolutely dead early -ish on a mid-week evening, so not even any ambience.

Went here for work’s Christmas meal…… linguine was the texture of tinned spaghetti overcooked by an hour or two!🤦🏼‍♀️ Apple crumble was ok but my “crème anglaise” was made by Ambrosia!!! The only redeeming feature was the friendly staff. Not worth the money. Very disappointing 😢

We visited Maribell with friends on a visit to Carnoustie. We ordered 3 tapas each and the portions were very generous, more than enough to satisfy the biggest appetite. We had a wide selection of tapas, mussels in garlic sauce, beer battered fish guorgons, mushrooms, battered calamari, chicken and french fries with alioli. Every tapas was perfectly cooked and delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing was to much trouble for them. Can highly recommend Maribells and we will be back

Really friendly and happy atmosphere. Had a great few drinks on a Saturday night here. Prices were the usual price you would pay at any other bar in the area and I will be back again due to what the staff bring to the place at no extra cost.

Spent Friday and Saturday 2.3rd Sept 22 at Maxibell what a place. Good food great wine friendly and efficient staff. the main guy Alli is brilliant and to top it off live entertainment both nights. a wonderful mix of welcoming, friendly and extremely talented locals. we will definitely go back

This looked interesting and quirky, it did not disappoint we had the French Tapas, with 3 dishes each for the group of 7. The service was excellent, the food the same, we started with the cooked cheese and dipping bread, then various dishes, would go back and was reasonably priced.

With not many options for sit down dining in Carnoustie, we ate at Maxibell's on our first and last nights in town. Their tapas selection is varied and quite good. Had an ala carte steak as well that was a nice change of pace. The live music each night (Wed-Sat) was uncommonly good and quite unexpected. The bar side was lively on the weekend and everything was well tended by the owner/pubkeep & his staff. Recommend!

French tapas was the draw for us, this was a walk past and restaurant looked busy and the smells drew us in,. We were lucky to get seated and the waitress was professional and friendly, The menu was the hardest bit so many delicious choices....

I’ve been to Maxibells several times and really enjoyed the food but I’m afraid this time the food was really sub standard. The chef who used to create some great tapas dishes has apparently left and it really shows!!!

This is a little gem worth a visit. Very unassuming but service, food and price were excellent. Will certainly revisit next time in Carnoustie and have already recommended to friends and family.

I don't know if we were just the first in, on a Saturday evening, or there were 2 menus, one for the bar and another for the restaurant. We sat in the bar to eat, at 5pm when it opened. The menu was definitely not of a French influence. Tacos, paella, tapas. We chose the paella, at £10.00, not overpriced, but was for what we received. The 2 king prawns were delicious, but the paella itself, was obviously warmed up, and fairly dry, with overcooked fish, and quite bland. The wine although good, was also overpriced at £7.50 for 250ml of pinot gricio. I hope that this was just a one off, and as it was fully booked all night, that others had a better experience.

Went for Hogmany. £60 a head for really poor, tasteless food and a glass of cheap Prosecco. Only saving grace was the band Franco who were excellent. So many people squeezed into a small area to make maximum profit. Gave it a try but absolutely wont eat here again..awful....just awful.
