Mattoni Italian Restaurant in Peterborough

Myself and my daughter met some of my work colleagues here for some lunch. We'd pre-ordered our food as we came during our lunch break. The service was quick and efficient. The food was delicious. Highly recommend this place. Chef Leo done a fantastic job. Looking forward to returning here on Sunday for a roast dinner.

The majority of our cutlery and crockery were blemished with dry food or grease stains. We chose the "freshly baked" in house every day 'Focaccia & Olives' After eating a couple of slices of bread, we noticed that the bread underneath was COVERED in mould!! We decided not to carry on with our meal. They were good enough not to charge for what we had already consumed. The staff were not shocked by the issue, it felt like they were accustomed to having problems. We were told that the chef thought the mould was olives. I'm not a trained chef and it was 100% obvious by the blue colour and pattern that it was mould. Avoid at all costs.

Good food, good atmosphere, not crowded

Excellent meatballs with spaghetti! Bacon in the Carbonera is delicious as well as the alfredo sauce! The cheese bread is basically a NY white pizza and was great! We needed some good food and this hit the spot!

Disappointed to say the least. I ordered the Gnocchi alla Mattoni and it was just a goopy mess. I had an aperol spritz and that also wasn’t great. However, my partner had the Modenese calzone and was happy. Stick to pizzas, avoid the seafood. Staff were friendly and quick. Only gripe is with the food and quality of the cocktail unfortunately. Would also say outside tables need to be tidied more.

Saturday lunch deal was very good value, pizza was delicious and my carbonara wasn’t bad, it would be much improved if it was made the authentic way with no cream and more Parmesan sadly the cream dominated the flavour, having said that service was prompt and food was freshly made, will go again but not for the carbonara.

Booked an anniversary meal online - arrived 5 mins early to a hoard of people blocking the entrance. They had clearly booked a private party. Fought my way to the bar to say we have booked a table for 2. Was met with - did you book online? Sorry that doesn’t work - we have no tables! If your online booking platform “doesn’t work” then remove it! There was no apology - then reluctantly said if you want you can sit outside? We decided to sit down outside but after removing rubbish from our table and surrounded by cigarette butts - they said we will be out to you in 5/10 mins! No offer of would you like to see a menu? Can we order you a drink while you wait? Nothing! Sat for 5 minutes then decided to leave and go elsewhere! Terrible service - rude staff - will not be returning. Sort your online platform out- or remove it - simple!

They don’t use salt AT ALL. The pizza dough didn’t have any salt so it was like eating flour dough without flavor. The pasta where really nada as well. Terrible place

We hadn't been here for many years and have been reluctant to try it more recently since it changed hands, and we'd heard some devious reviews. However, we decided to try it for an anniversary meal, close to home. Pleased we didn't listen to the reviews. The food was lovely, decent portions and very tasty. The service was excellent. We hate to be rushed, so when we finished our starter (a large antipasti sharing platter!) we needed a bit of a breather and so asked for some time. We were listened to and given a decent break between courses. Everything we asked for was provided promptly and staff were all very friendly. We even got a surprise 'happy anniversary' dessert with a candle, which was a lovely thoughtful touch. A couple of small things could have improved the experience a little. The atmosphere was lacking, but I this was largely as a result of so few people being there. Sadly, I think people have listened to the reviews, so for a Saturday night, it was dead. This isn't the restaurant's fault though. The background music wasn't quite right for a Saturday evening in 'Italy'. And the toilets are passed their best and need to be better maintained, and stocked with toilet paper. We'd really like to see this local business do well and hope they'll work on the things that can be fairly easily improved and that local people will return here. We really enjoyed our first child-free meal out for many weeks and will return perhaps for a lunchtime treat with the children in the coming weeks.

We took the family here to celebrate a birthday, having heard great things about the food, plus I like an Italian meal so it was a natural choice. Mattoni's is very local to us too and we like to support local business where we can. The initial service was great, and they accommodated a change of time at short notice as we were running a little late. We found the food to be well presented and to a good standard, with plenty of taste shining through. At the end of the meal most of the waiting staff seemed to vanish into thin air and the standard of service and attention evaporated with them. We struggled to gain the attention of the two junior waiting staff who were left, they seemed to be more interested in sitting at the bar chatting. In the end we telephoned the restaurant and asked if they could bring the bill over!

This is an excellent restaurant. I always feel relaxed here and enjoy the atmosphere. The service is polite and friendly and the food is very tasty and authentic Italian.

Food was very nice only 4 people in the restaurant on a Saturday night when we arrived very quite no one arrived while we were there. There wasn't a atmosphere as the place was nearly empty. 2 staff front of house took drinks order then came back for food order food came out quick but once we got our mains that's the last we saw of the staff they stood at the bar we was never asked if everything was OK or if we wanted any more drinks so the service wasn't very good

I’m actually ashamed at myself for having to put 1 star. There wasn’t an option to do “0” stars unfortunately. Drinks took 20 minutes Food took over an hour - The very small restaurant was only half full when we ordered The margarita tasted like nail polish remover The chips were stale First and last time visiting this awful place.

I ordered the salmon and hubby had the meatballs both were delicious. Unfortunately the restaurant was out of a few things on the menu. The pudding was not added to the bill. The table was very sticky and I felt it needed a good clean. A nice evening but we won't rush back.

I went in this week there wasn’t much choice as ran out of lots of food but our waitress recommended a few dishes they did have in stock and they were a great choice was little disappointed that again they had no veal and ravioli when they menu says it’s hand made. Our waitress was lovely her service was amazing and she is always a smiling face when we walk in always remembers us which is lovely. I believe her name is Kirsty that what the receipt say always see her talking to tables and working so hard.

Very shocking with the quality of food here. I had high expectations for this place. Food quality was appalling. Ordered scallops. As the menu read, pan seared with double cream, topped with mozzerella then baked in the oven. Served flaming. Served with our freshly baked focaccia of the day. Scallops came in a pot of cream. Bland cream. Was chewing on a scallop (there was 3 in for £9.95) was a raw texture. Spat it out. Cut open another one to check it wasn’t raw. Was hot to touch. Good sign. Was NOT pan seared. Was NOT topped with mozzerella. was NOT served flaming and my bread never did arrive. (Wasn’t overly busy for them to completely forget the bread) Garlic bread start was good. Can’t fault that. Alfredo for main. Bland as anything. Mushroom just tasted boiled. Ham is ham and tomatoes were halved and hot. Meatballs main was bland. Not seasoning what so ever. Very basic. As a side I ordered French fries. Paid extra for ‘dirty fries’ that’s one word for them. Was the cheapest tasting fries I have ever tasted. Burnt. Bacon was nice. *note* I did complain about the scallops and the nice lady did take it off the bill. *note* was never offered black pepper or parmasan.

Italian restaurant ? Oh please. Food has nothing to do with italian cuisine. Pizza ? I'm sorry but frozen pizza from aldi is much better. Pasta, completely tasteless. Very disappointed, the owner clearly has no idea about italian food. Never again.

If you love Italian food - DON’T GO THERE! The restaurant is an insult to Italian cuisine. Bland food, clueless and unwelcome staff. The only thing authentic here is the bill you'll receive. Save your appetite for a real Italian experience elsewhere.

First time we've been since it changed to new owners, but was just as nice as I remember it being before, maybe even a little better. Food was great and well presented, and the 2 for 1 cocktail menu is a nice addition.

Super breakfast, presentation was 10/10. Coffee was amazing and staff were friendly and helpful. The food was hot and great quality.

Went for the first time two weeks ago, was so impressed went back twice for the weekday lunch deal and yesterday had the Sunday roast lunch, huge portions, beef a bit chewy, lamb, veg and Yorkshire pudding all excellent. Deserves more customers. The weekday lunch deal is pasta or pizza for £7, get it wile you can!!!!

I popped in for some breakfast on Saturday morning, the food was fresh, hot and presentation was 10/10. The coffee was delicious.

Haven’t been to mattonis for years as I was always a little disappointed in the food. Went last week and so glad I gave it another shot, the pizzas were fabulous! Service was great too. I will now be a regular.

Lovely food, disappointed that they had run out of the main I wanted and the desert, plenty of alternatives avaliable. Comfortable seating, good choice of drinks avaliable, did not feel rushed to order or leave after eating. They put the service charge on the bill, but this was pointed out before paying and the staff would have taken it off if requested. Was happy to pay it and probably would have paid more than the 10% added, if not already included. Worth a visit

Excellent local restaurant with delicious Italian food and a good range of cocktails and beers. Comes across as a lovely authentic Italian restaurant with heaps of style. Very much recommend.

Food is really good, can be a bit noisy at times but not too bad.

This place has gone downhill since being taken over last year. The base of the pizza was so hard the knife was unable to cut through it. The salad is now missing the lovely sweet onion relish making it very basic. This will be my last visit.

I guess this is what happens when non-Italians run an Italian restaurant. The new owners need to make up their mind in terms of what type of outlet this place is, and fast. It's very far from Italian but its an "ok" local generic eatery. Unfortunately we now have a grand total of zero proper Italian restaurants in the area.

We have been coming here since it was first opened. However, the last 2/3 visits have left us feeling disappointed. Tonight (9/2/24) is probably our last visit. The staff whilst friendly were clueless as to the menu. Our server did not understand what a Rioja was. We were told that you did not have any so chose another red wine only to be told that a Rioja was found. Not only did the Rioja arrive but also the second choice of wine. So far it was humorous like an episode of Fawlty Towers. I received the incorrect pizza which was returned and was tried to be fixed by removing incorrect topping and adding the correct topping where the new topping was cold. A fresh pizza was then prepared which came with a soggy doughy base and was not particularly warm. My husbands meal was taken back to the kitchen to be remade so we could eat together. His new meal was salty and dry, not at all appealing. To top it off the bill arrived where we were overcharged for a bowl of olives to be told that this was a computer error. We had a reservation booked for a family party in a couple weeks which we have subsequently cancelled because we no longer trust the restaurant. Summary, inexperienced staff whilst friendly and tried their best do not know the menu, food poor and felt diddled with the bill.

A lunchtime treat for my eldest granddaughter & I as she was going back to uni. We’ve always liked Mattoni Hampton & seeing the are now open on Mondays, it was first choice. Friendly welcome, tasty food & very reasonably priced. We both chose half pizza with fries & salad for £7 & we weren’t disappointed, it was delicious.

Wanted somewhere nice to take granddaughter before she went back to uni & noticed mattoni now open on Mondays. We had the lunchtime offer of half pizza, chips & salad rather than pasta which was also available for £7. A real tasty treat.

Had a bad day and didn’t want to cook so we looked at reviews online and decided to go here never been before and all I can say is amazing, our waitress was very friendly and very smiley it was nice to see such a welcoming attitude on arrival. The bill said her name was Kirsty she very helpful recommended a few dishes one of which I had and it definitely was what she said it was a mushroom starter I had pizza for main but my friend had the pasta she recommended and enjoyed it also. Didn’t have room for a dessert so she recommended a dessert cocktail which was lovely Mrs mattoni Enjoyable experience

Went with five friends who recommended it but we had to wait 40 mins just to order a drink and then longer order food. The waitress asked if we all wanted to eat together (strange question as no one ordered starters). Food was nice when it finally came but the service was not soo great. The waitress leaned right in front of me whilst I was eating to serve across the round table rather than walking round and the second time she did it, I had to say something. They had run out out various things only had one cider, one beer and as we discovered at end of meal - only four of us received chocolates. It wasn't even busy in there so I dread to think what service is like when busy. After food no one came to us for ages and by the time they did we couldn't face the wait for dessert so called it a night. Don't think I will return which is a shame as the menu looked varied. I ordered the seafood spaghetti (lacking in seafood I'm afraid and although it said octopus on menu there wasn't any in the dish).

Amazing delicious food and presentation.Our server, Kirsty was incredibly and friendly and attentive throughout our meal.I am a vegetarian and ordered Penne Arrabbiata which very beautifully presented and delicious and a variety of choices.Lovely and friendly atmosphere would highly recommend it !

Great night with friends. Came in to the restaurant and was greeted pleasantly and sat down straight away. The place was decorated beautifully for christmas! Our waitress Gracie was very polite and had amazing customer service on such a busy night. Always checking on us for drinks and anything we needed. I ordered the pizza which was absolutely delicious. We have been regular diners for 12yrs,however,after this evening’s visit,I don’t think we’ll be back again,the tables are in a terrible state,and either need a cloth or refurbishment. The very young staff leave a lot to be desired,forgetting cutlery,just all over the place…. Food was ok,but not as good as it used to be,a real shame….

I have just had the best steak I've ever had whilst eating out. All I can say is wow. The meal was sublime and the service was spot on. I shall be going again and again and again. First class.

After a month of no carbs, we were looking forward to a decent Italian meal. We found this place after taking the kids to a local soft play centre (sky high) and.... WOW. What excellent food and friendly service. Very welcoming of the 2 year olds we had with us, plenty high chairs, nice decor. No baby changing facilities. Large menu with plenty of fish and veggie options. Best calamari I’ve had since in Spain last. Pizza excellent, chilli meatballs also top class. Estrella and peroni on tap. Only criticism was the lack of a stone pizza oven but everything else made up for that. Generous portion sizes and a decent kids menu with proper food. Lots of on street parking nearby. Has on and off licence so can buy booze to take away.

Last time I ate here was a year ago. I’d been several times prior and always had excellent food and service and I’d rated them as excellent on tripadvisor but not on the last occasion. They just wanted us gone at 9pm when we had booked a table for 8pm. This visit the restaurant was back to how it used to be. Busy, great service and excellent food. I’m told the restaurant is under new management. Certainly will go back.

There is a reason this place is failing. Since the fast exit of the previous owner this place has fell down, run out of food when not busy, substandard cocktails and a very rude new ‘’management” team, the only person worth any wait is Gracie who it always very pleasant, this place will not be here for long and not to be confused with Mattoni in Eye who are exceptional.

Visited twice recently for lunch and food was amazing on both occasions . Generous portions and made with care , a credit to the chef and staff were so attentive and professional.

The atmosphere was amazing, we got shown to out table straight away and service was perfect the food came out quick and after we were done with the starters we got asked if we were ready for the mains which came out 5 minutes after that. Definitely will be coming back.

I went to the restaurant with two of my friends. One of my friends was celebrating her 60th birthday. We arrived at the restaurant and seated, we waited over 25 mins and then had to ask a member of staff if we could please have some menus and order some drinks / cocktails. They brought the menus finally. Then we waited another 20mins and had to ask again to place our order. We ordered some cocktails ,bottle of wine oh and our food as we didn't want to wait any longer. The cocktails arrived one had a fly in it so had to be replaced , the wine arrived no glasses ,they were just coming oh no they weren't. The food then arrived.would you like black pepper or parmesan? Oh parmesan please we replied, so the parmesan was grated over our pasta and us !!! Then eventually our wine glasses arrived. As this was booked for a special occasion, the whole experience turned out to be an expensive disappointment 😞 so won't be returning.

Food was nice and at good value. However, whilst dining with my colleagues over some business work, we couldn’t help but overhear a couple hard working staff members who were very polite, mention how they were hungry and couldn’t eat until after their shift. (Which isn’t a problem at all) Some of these workers, were working all night and not once did I see them have a break or slack during their shift. Energy is extremely important to work in hospitality and as a business meeting, me and my colleagues were astounded to overhear these poor workers do not get to eat during long shifts. This ruined my dining, as although the food was lovely, staff need more appreciation, old and young. I appreciate the staff that made my dining experience enjoyable until I heard this, as they are extremely hard working, polite and visibly good at their job. Thank you to the staff, I hope you will be able to boost your energy with food on your shift and be able to take a break when needed in long shifts. It is a pleasure to see that they can have a drink, however they need food too.

Food good but check your bill as service charge is added and we were not made aware of this, yes we should have checked the bill before paying but we were there for a birthday celebration with everyone enjoying themselves and we have never been to a restaurant that has automatically added service charge although after checking the bill when we got home it says optional we were not given the choice. Had we been made aware when the bill was presented to us we would not have then left a tip. Left a sour taste in our mouths after a lovely evening,

Tried it twice now, lunch and evening meal. Hard working staff, got a good meal both times for reasonable prices. Very nice pizzas and good carbonara.

Exceptional food in a vibrant atmosphere, well served by great staff. Has become our go-to restaurant. Inexpensive, too.
