My all time favorite pub in all of Ireland. The staff and locals were incredible, the food was to die for, the atmosphere was great, and the cat Friday made the experience even better!

Don't bother some food great others not so great. Took a long time as well.

Filled my belly right up, absolutely chuffed went for a swim down the road in ballygally straight after. Would definitely return as guiness was well up to standard

While staying in town for one nite we wanted authentic public house. Wow! Crazy good! Guinness pie the best i have had. And the locals conversation was the best. Chelsea the bartender was so nice and full of great conversation! After 2 great weeks in Ireland this little local spot was best way to end our trip. Thank you everyone at Matties Public House!

The table was very sticky, the food was clearly reheated frozen and the final touch...my boyfriend found a large piece of plastic in his burger. Very disappointed with the place and the food. Google reviews in no way reflect the reality of this place. To avoid.

A colleague told me about this hidden gem and was I ever glad we went! Excellent food 👌, staff couldn't do enough for us, felt welcome from the minute we went in.. and what a night we had!! Live music and dancing to boot!! Highly recommended.. we will definitely be back!

Small , typical Irish Pub with a friendly atmosphere. Situated a little bit more than a mile away from Caravan and Camping park / Carnfunnock Country Park. We didn't eat there but as I could see Pub was full at the evening time.

Little gem of a find serving up great food. Really friendly staff with a reasonably priced menu, and I hear they're getting ultrafast Broadband on a few weeks! Picture proves how much I enjoyed the 6oz Texan burger I had!!

Charming - simply charming. I was guttered I couldn’t stay for the singing!! You’re going to get a great pint - hearty food and wonderful staff and locals!

Great bar, horrible restaurant, last 2 times ive been in, waited over an hour on a quiet day and a normal day. Only 2 chefs cooking on a busy fathers day. Need staff asap because they cant keep up with demand. Food was good enough but nothing amazing, would rather go elsewhere unfortunately

Matties never fails to deliver. Quality food at great prices. And a perfect atmosphere. Call in on Thursday evening for the best music session anywhere.

We came across this place by looking on Google after a walk the pictures look great, Not anymore. We first had a drink here on the 28th May 23. We were met by a female behind the bar with no customer service whatsoever, no hello, no smile & no conversation nothing. We then by accident ended up her again after getting lost and in need of food on the 5th June 23 so we reluctantly went in. This time the lady behind the bar was very welcoming and bubbly. We sat outside my husband sat on a chair which broke, he told the young man and he said people stand on them to turn the heaters on, this was the 2nd chair which was broke. Managed to find another chair. The table was sticky, we asked for it to be cleaned which it was with cold water and no detergent, hence it was still sticky. We had drinks and my husband's glass was dirty. Both had the Beef Guinness pie, peas and carrots, both veggies were cold, I'd ordered champ when the young man served it, his thumb was holding the bowl with his thumb in the champ. I didn't eat that side of the champ. Lots of photos behind the bar referring to an awards celebration. Not sure how long ago this was I can honestly say it won't be winning again. The place looks unloved and needs some TLC. We wouldn't go back

We arrived on a Thursday night with a group of guests from Australia and England looking for food and a couple of pints of Guiness. We were delighted when a locals lit up a music session, which set the mood for a great night, and they even invited us up to sing a few tunes. Good food, Great guiness, better crack! Great traditional Irish pub, highly recommend, thanks for the hospitality!

Excellent food good value great atmosphere. Our B & B host recommended this place spot on - great all freshly cooked menu. Very helpful staff as 1 dont like raw onion so went to extra lenghts to get on order exactly as wanted. Thanks to staff, Best place we have sampled in this are.

Made to feel very welcome from entering by the staff good food, at great prices and good portion sizes. Live music from Paul Sexton friendly, and a great evenings entertainment, recommend both. Good craic with the regulars as well

Our eclectic group of 6 had a very warm welcome to Mattie’s Meeting House. The food was amazing, the music just incredible and the atmosphere was spot on. We had the best time and the staff was so friendly and accommodating!

A wonderful atmosphere, great food, a fabulous band and an engaging bar staff who obviously enjoyed their jobs. We had the best evening!

Nice pint and food but portion a bit small had the chicken curry and chips was lovely but lacking a full portion of chips

My wife and I visited on a Thursday evening, glad we booked as it was busy. My wife had lasagne which she loved and I had Steak and Guinness pie, one of the best I've tried, washed down with an excellent pint of Guinness. The local musicians were on top form and the staff friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed 👍

Awful food. Place is a dirty dump. Avoid.

This place is a dump with decor that looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70s. The food tastes like it was from the 70s too. My chicken curry made microwave ready meals from Lidl taste like a Michelin star banquet. When you add in sticky tables that might have been last wiped down in the time of the Potato Famine, and filthy toilets, you an guess why we won't be back any time soon.

First licensed in 1840, often referred to as Mattie Moore’s, who was the former owner in early days. My 3rd great grandfather Solomon Morris was born in Cairncastle 1812 and died Cairncastle 1888. No doubt he would have had a few pints or halfn’s in here. Lovely little traditional pub.

The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating to my family (4 adults and 2 toddlers) they made the kids feel special and seen! I loved this. My food was good, but not extremely memorable. The meal did take a while to come to the table, but I can overlook all of this due to how accommodating and friendly the staff was.

Only getting to write this review now . we visited here one lunchtime and i can gladly say the Food was Horrific. The most bland food i’ve ever tasted . i will say staff where nice and friendly but seriously needs a proper chef and proper food / not frozen reheated rubbish

Wonderful little pub. Very quirky and authentic experience. The chicken was delicious with the famous Irish whiskey sauce.

We were stunned to be charged £6.80 for two pints of blacurrant cordial, one diluted with water and one with soda. On questioning the amount, it emerged that a mistake had been made and that we were charged 2 X £1.50 for mixers, whereas we only had one (the other cordial being diluted with tap water).

Great food and service and a traditional Irish pub! Seafood Chowder and beef stew were hot, flavorful and service quikly. Not much on decor, but hit th basics just right. It was exectly what we were looking for

I was here with my Mother I got the Smokie burger and my Mother had the Guinness pie there was a bit of wait for the meals not too bad. The Guinness pie was well presented and came with garden peas, mash potatoes and carrots all was very good the only complaint could have been that the carrots where a little too Al dente but still palatable. The burger on the other hand was very over cooked, dry and tough to chew and had a slightly odd taste as if it was on the brink of going off also it had smoked bacon pieces on it which could have broken your teeth. It came with chips and a bit of side salad and again the chips where slightly over cooked but tasted ok. We had two cups of tea and two glasses of orange and the whole meal including drinks came to £32 which wasn’t bad just a pity about some of the food being over or undercooked. The staff where all lovely and more than helpful.

The food, service and atmosphere was fantastic. We went twice in 4 days and will be regulars from now on. Totally faultless

This place is very quaint pub. From the outside it just looks like a house. The drink is surprisingly cheap and to our surprise the food was absolutely great. If you are in Ballygally it's a short trip up from the coast and worth a visit.

Old fashioned, traditional pub with no frills. Extensive menu; Mattie's Chicken in whisky cream sauce good, as was Beef & Guiness Pie, both with well cooked veggies. Friendly, chatty staff & locals. Craic sadly not great...

Such a great meal. Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed the Guinness pie, shrimp scampi with “twisters” (curly fries), champ, side salads. All was delicious. Service was friendly and helpful. Can’t recommend it more. TripAdvisor says they’re open to 11 pm, but take note that...

Typical irish pub with good food and live music brilliant

Very friendly staff, Quaint country irish pub Attention to detail needed with some aspects to running a country pub, ie; when we sat down at our table, the table surface seemed to be very sticky, we ordered chicken maryland and the accompanying veg was carrot and cabbage, I don't think carrot and cabbage should be served with chicken maryland, maybe peas and sweetcorn would be a better option. Just my opinion. ❤

Spending the night in Ballygalley, we visited Mattie’s, hoping for a local’s experience and we weren’t disappointed! Friendly staff and excellent food! We got the Guinness Pie and a chicken filet (can’t remember the name), both were excellent!

It was my first visit to Mattys. My partner has eater there many times. She told me about the quality of the food, she should have warned me about the quantity. I had a starter...very nice, now for the main event. Steak and Guinness pie...

Good food, great people... now waiting to go back on St Patrick's Day! P.S. We went back to Matties on 17th March and enjoyed a really great night with live music and the odd bit of Irish dancing too. Such friendly and welcoming people. Must go back sometime in the future.

We stayed at The Ballygally Castle for the wifes birthday but headed to Matties on the recommendation of a local I met in Belfast, (cheers Mark!). Glad we did! We were made very welcome and told we could park out back and given a lift back to the hotel, although we opted for a taxi, (they organised for us) to let the staff get home. Food was great and homely, very resonably priced. Staff were very friendly, Naula looked after us really well. Thanks Naula! Drink was reasonably priced. Irish Whiskys were great! It was a quiet Wednesday night in the bar, but we loved it. Thank you folks!

Was a quiet Thursday, not many customers, but the lunch was lovely if a bit slow considering it wasn't busy. All in all lovely pub lovely grub. Recommend it. Took a point off as the Guinness wasn't as good as hoped, but other than that, thumbs up 👍

Had a lovely meal here yesterday evening, along with a couple of perfect pints of Guinness and a superb Irish coffee. Very reasonable for such quality food, even more so during Beat the Clock. If we lived locally this would definitely be our local, so relaxed but with a genuine buzz and incredibly friendly and efficient staff.

Called in for lunch while staying at Ballygally Castle. It says half a mile from the road but it's def a bit more than that! Food was great really good selection and staff were friendly.

Used to love this place pre lockdown. Went back recently for a meal. My husband’s burger was poor quality and the chips were frozen and tasted like cardboard. My chicken was mediocre and the pepper sauce was awful! Who ever decided it was a good...
