Went in for a quick drink before a meal out with my family. Went to the bar and asked for a beer and a glass of wine. I asked the lady behind the bar if children were allowed in, and the lady said that as long as hey were gone by 7 which is fare enough. I then went to order the drinks and the lady behind the bar quickly jumped in a said if you have children only one adult can have an alcoholic drink. I would understand if we appeared drunk but as this was 5pm on a Friday and we went there straight from work this was not the case. I pointed out we were only wanted one as we had a table booked at a restaurant but she refused, offered ,no explanation was rude and very unwelcoming. It is fare to say that we will not be returning as I have never met such a vile person that is suppose to be in the hospitality trade.

This was a revisit to the pub after a great time last year, the staff remembered our group well and offered a warm welcome. This is a town pub therefore a lot of locals but all very friendly also this pub has a great jukebox and pub games. Thank you Marshalls for another great visit.

A very pleasant drop in for a pit stop. Pleasing decor. Didn't dine but drank, rested and enjoyed. Good and varied types of seating and good loos. Very good disabled access. Surprisingly no scrumpy available - given it was Devon and cider territory. will go again.

We found this bar by chance and we spent most of the evening there. The live music was brilliant and the atmostphere was so friendly. We really enjoyed ourselves

Easy to walk past, but don't miss one of the last Independent pubs to offer a good choice of ales, ciders, lagers and hospitality. Friendly staff and a warm welcome make it a pleasant visit.

Lovely pub which had a refurb earlier this year. We visited around lunchtime on a Friday. Three ales available, Jail, Bass and Otter Ale. The jail was awesome.

This a good pub serving a wide range of drinks. It is on the list for real drinkers on the Tarka line.

Firstly, I am not sure why this is listed as a restaurant when essentially it's just a bar (they might provide food but there was no evidence of it when we were there). My wife and I were in town on a wet Saturday evening in January looking for one or two pubs that looked cosy, not too noisy and had a table for a couple of oldies to sit down. Most that we saw seemed full of mainly young men watching a football match on TV – there’s nothing wrong with that of course, but not what we wanted. About to give up and go to the nearby Wetherspoons I spotted the words ‘Real Ale Bar’ so went to investigate. Inside we found it a very pleasant down-to-earth bar with friendly locals and a friendly lady serving behind the bar. There was a good selection of ales on tap, and the music (from a juke box I think) was good middle of the road stuff which was very listenable and not too loud not to be able to have a conversation without shouting. It was just the sort of place we were looking for and so looked no further and remained there.

Love this pub, warm welcome, friendly banter and good drinks choice (several rums :) :) ) My doggies are also always made to feel very welcome! There is also a very snazzy jukebox. As a side point having read other reviews.... Gimmick4life: How strange that upon staggering into a pub late at night when you were too drunk to be served you didn't see and kiddies or dogs about?! Who would have thought??

Happened to be in Barnstaple on business with a colleague, wandered around the town looking for a welcoming looking pub, and this seemed to be the best of a bad bunch.

Only good thing is you can order from a screen.. waited close to 25 mins for a kids chips and sausage with curry sauce, chip where average sausage was horrific even by fish and chip shop standards full of water and fat.. curry sauce was super runny and didn't taste great at all.. to top it off the lad who worked there was taking the fun out of people it seemed and laughing.. one lad with curly hair had the work pace of someone needing a crap and had constipation, he threw my food into the bag and was just so slow! Find a new job buddy.. I didn’t say thank you and won’t be going back..

Location wise excellent. Unfortunately, this tired old looking pub has definitely seen better days! Need of major investment, but it would definitely be worth it. Years ago, this pub was full of customers all of the time.

This is a great place for a coffee or something to eat when waiting for a train or shopping in the area. I meet friends here once a month and have never been disappointed. The full vegetarian breakfast is excellent. Don’t go to Costa, come here instead!

We have just had a brilliant family dinner at The Starter Bar. The staff were really friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble! Our boys both have ADHD, which can make dinners out stressful, but the staff went out of their way to ensure the boys were happy and that we all felt welcome. Staff gave the boys colouring books, sharpened their pencils, chatted about dinosaurs and generally did anything to make them smile. We were relaxed enough to stay for desert, which never happens! All the food was delicious, varied and served piping hot. We definitely recommend the brownie sundae for pudding. The meal and drinks were good value and very tasty. Thank you to the two lovely ladies for giving us a really special evening to remember. Highly recommended.
