We cannot recommend this cafe highly enough! Very well set out in view of covid rules and regulations- very clean - super friendly staff and a jolly good selection of snacks/meals. Coffee really good. Toilets are on the same floor with excellent facilities.

The cafe upstairs was full to overflowing so I opted for the ground floor Market Place . Not all M&S stores have these but they certainly have their attractions . The menu is not the same : it's a lot more Mediterranean and Middle Eastern. The salads were amazing and very good value . I couldn't finish my generous £5 worth of 3 different ones and as they were served in a cardboard container I could take them away with me . Everything is disposable and eco-friendly ; drink containers and 'cutlery' alike . Only complaint : it's so popular it's very difficult to find a seat .

My wife ordered a cheese toastie and two teas. She brought the teas after payment but we had to wait 30 minutes for the toastie which was slapped down on the table by a woman who disappeared immediately. Obviously what tea was remaining was cold. One young man was running about serving but it was obvious he needed help.On this occasion there was a serious problem. More staff required or redeployment of staff or more cooking equipment needed.

The lady in front of me was very irate about her coffee when I arrived. I thought, how rude of her. So I ordered my beef burger and fries and 2 regular coffees. I paid £11+ for them. Rather expensive I thought, but it is M&S;, it should be good. I was told to wait to one side for the coffees & they would call out when the burger was ready. I waited as instructed. My burger came, I still waited. 4 people got their drinks orders, but as they were all teas, I thought maybe coffees take a little longer. Then there were no more customers waiting & the girls started talking between themselves. They didn’t ask me why I was still standing there. So I asked them if they had forgotten my coffees. There was no apology, she just went over to the girls & they mumbled between themselves & then brought my coffees. Still no apology for forgetting my order or for the wait. Just handed over my coffees & went back to talking. By then my burger had been in the carton for some time, so when I started eating it, the base was totally soggy. The fries & the burger itself were Ok but what a great disappointment. If I want a very expensive snack in York another time, I know where I will NOT be going. If this place was a private enterprise, they would not be in business for very long, especially as there a a great many good eating places around there who are far more professional than this place. I like this cafe but the queuing system needs to be looked at as there is a long queue and when you get near the front there is two order points but people always walking up to the front and pushing in today a member of staff had to watch as people were getting cross about this. The food is lovely and what I really like is each item tells you the calorie count as being on a diet this is important to me. Tables need clearing quicker. I have lunch here every few weeks, but we are getting increasingly frustrated with the service: it is now quite normal to be told that we will have a wait of 20 minutes, even when we order soup ! Last time, we waited over half an hour, by which time our tea was cold. We did mention this, and they did give us fresh tea, but no cups to go with it (ours were full of cold tea !). Individual staff members who bring the food are always pleasant, our quarrel is not with them, but their managers.

It has a beautiful outside area, in Summer, shaded by full foliage trees. A very good coffee and tea, but marred by slow and inefficient service. Despite four staff in attendance, there did not seem to be any organizational, and despite a queue, people waited and waited. This seems to be a common problem in many cafes, lack of training and supervision. Forgive me for getting on my high horse, but when we can land human beings on the moon, why?why?why?do we have to wait so long for drink of tea or coffee. This is no reflection on M and S other services, as I have shopped with them for over sixty years so they are doing a lot of things right, just that their coffee shop is not functioning efficiently.

The last two visits I've had with my mum have been very disappointing. After a very long Que around Xmas time we ordered 2 pots of tea . We weren't warned the dish washer wasn't working and gave us takeaway cups!. We were still charged for a pot of tea. We ordered jacket potatoes, I'm assuming the jackets are warned up in the microwave as mine was solid and couldn't even put a fork through it. Our second visit was today and they only had 2 choices of sandwiches, "wild salmon " which was nearly 4 pounds for tinned salmon and my mum decided to go for a jacket potato again which was very dry, apparently if you want butter with your filling you have to pay extra. We never used to mind the prices but is there anything on the menu that is actually cooked from scratch? May as well go to a cafe in the market it's cheaper and the food is cooked to order.

I cannot fault the food and drinks they are what you would expect from M&S; decent quality and average prices. Like other reviewers it is the lack of staff or poor planning that lets this place down. Service is steady at best and the clearing of vacated tables very poor. Coupled with the fact that there are no obvious places to return used trays to means that at any given time several tables are littered with abandoned trays. Additionally by mid morning there was no butter available! Poor planning at the very least plus there is a food hall in store. Might someone not pop downstairs and remedy the situation? This must be a real money spinner for M&S; and a little bit more attention to detail and staffing levels would mean a much better customer experience. Make us want to return not simply assume we will return.

There isn't a big selection of food to purchase and not ideal for Coeliacs as no GF foods were on available in the morning. :( Wouldn't recommend visiting a M&S; cafe, unless you have time to spare.

Afternoon tea seems to be a new offering in the Marks' cafe so my friend and I tried it today. We each had four tiny 2 bite sandwiches 2 tiny 2 bite tarts, a scone with jam and cream and a pot of tea . This was £12 .95 for two .All very nice but could have been a little more generous .

Although very busy,..well it was 1pm , the queue kept moving along. Yes, it looked full, but everyone got seats by the time their order was fulfilled. I was served by cheerful staff who did their utmost to keep tables clean and ensure cleared ASAP for next customers. As always the food served was piping hot and fresh, presented well. What do some people expect? Having scanned other revues I feel they ought to in future take a table in high end restaurant...M&S; give excellent value for money and I for one will keep going back.

Called in on a busy Saturday morning, we usually go upstairs to the cafe But for a change we went to the one in the main entrance to see what it was like. The service was very quick and the young staff were very efficient and pleasant. We had a bacon bap and a cheese and tomato pastry which was nice and hot and tasted delicious. The drinks were nice and hot and we just sat and watched the people go by. The area was nice and clean. Will be visiting again soon,no doubt.

Was in york shopping so decided to call in to good old marks cafe, I've been in a lot of there cafes over the country and its always good service and food, but this is definitely not the case with there York store, poor choice, and dirty uncleared tables, we had to ask for it to be cleared away and cleaned, even the very apologetic member of staff admitted it wasn't good enough! There was no cutlery too we had to wait for clean ones coming out of the dishwasher, come on marks pull your socks up on this store and give someone a kick up the bum and make this as good as the others.

This M&S; cafe is a disgrace to York. A long wait to be served, tables not cleared and it is not nice to be sat amongst other people's debris. Our tea was cold and almost consumed by the time our order arrived. We could see other customers were having the same problems. 3 Managers were stood at the entrance of the cafe having a chat, they would have served a better purpose if they had cleared tables.

Visited at half term so this cafe was busy, but no excuse for poor service, surly and unhelpful staff. Requested a pot of hot water with our tea: was told they didn't have enough pots! Would not give hot water in a jug or cup due to "health and safety"! Was told they would refill the teapot: had to queue another 10 mins for this. Not good enough!

On arrival at the upstairs cafe there were used pots and plates on all the tables. I ended up clearing our table whilst my wife ordered the food. As we were in a hurry just two soups of the day and drinks. However, this must have taxed the staff greatly as after 30 minutes our soup had still not arrived. The couple next to us had also been waiting over 30 minutes for two small meals. On enquiry as to how long our meal would be I was told to come back when she wasn't dealing with customers (I assumed I was one).

Just called in at Marks and Spencers café (upstairs) I decided on the special of pie and mash and my husband Panang curry. How long does it take to heat up a pie?????? Well the queue to order the food took 15 minutes and then we waited and waited. After 30 mins we enquired where the food was and were told another 5 minutes. We FINALLY got our food after 55 minutes. Surely management could do something to organise the staff.

Despite the sales being on the shop wasnt that full, so we were pretty perplexed why it took 20 minutes or so queuing for a cup of coffee... that said the coffee tasted great, and the cheese scone was nice and fresh.

Why, oh why, is every single Marks and Spencer Cafe chaotic? No matter which one you go into - and we have been in a lot - they always seem to have loads of staff and loads of queueing customers. The coffee is great - hence the visit - but they are always completely disorganised. Surely staff behind the counter should not be disappearing off to 'get things' - trays, milk, passing hot orders to the kitchen? Tables are never cleared swiftly enough and staff look miserable. Is it the coffee machines that take too long - no, I don't think it is. I know we are not the only ones to think like this and every time you go in you feel like taking off your coat and getting them sorted out. It makes absolutely no difference what time of day you visit it is always disorganised. Please M & S sort out your cafe systems. If you do want a decent, reasonable priced coffee and access to clean toilets then go to M & S but be prepared to stand and wait a disproportionate length of time to be served!

My sister and I were in York recently and had a coffee break in the cafe downstairs in M&S; and we decided to go back for lunch, we both had roast beef bloomer sandwiches which were delicious and you are able to add chips for £1.00 and a drink for 50p extra so it's very reasonable, the service was quick and the staff were very nice. I would definitely recommend and will return without a doubt!.

Popped in for a bite before work and noticed that it was filled with dirty tables which made me want to take away as i went to get my tuna sandwich i noticed a pair of scissors just lying there as i gave it to the guy working he looked completely clueless, once my food was cooked they picked it up with their hands!! and just shoved it in the packaging so when it came to eating it, most of the tuna and cheese was stuck to the top and it was not enjoyable. I wish I went back to complain and get my money back but I just didn't have time by then

No gluten free options on the menu so my 17 year old niece who has coeliac was offered a snack bar. We had already ordered food for the rest of the party and then was told that she couldn't purchase anything from Tesco to eat in the cafe with us. Not only were the cafe unable to accommodate her dietary requirements, they were also not willing to accommodate her to be able to eat breakfast with the rest of the family. This does not feel very inclusive and nor does it meet the requirements of the equality act 2010. Very disappointing Tesco!

The coffee ☕️ is excellent here, and the staff service is outstanding. However, the queue at peak times plus the waiting time let this cafe down. Creating 2 permanent queues, having 2 tills permanently staffed along with 2 drinks stations permanently staffed would perhaps help.

Sadly the staff were bordering on rude , especially the lady who appeared to be in charge . There was a tiny space to wait for a table. As I was on my own , the table which had been cleared for me by one of the other staff was not given to me and I was pit at a table next to a door where children were attending a private party. I wanted to order soup but was told it would be ½ hour. Not sure why that would be as it said soup was available from 12 noon and it was simply a case of putting some in a bowl ! This , coupled with a frosty atmosphere was enough to make me leave. There were 3 staff working in thr seating area yet there were uncleaned tables and lots of people who were clearly waiting to order . Sadly , I decided I wasn't particularly welcome and I decided to leave.
