Tried to order lunch for our office, ended up not ordering as they had no vegetarian option. It’s 2023, there should be a veggie option at the very least.

Wow. My first time ever trying pie and mash with liquor. Didn't know what to expect when my sister in law said she was bringing us here. Loved it. I'll definitely be back.

Times I've been to Braintree 20 miles from where I live near Cambridge and never realised there was a Pie N Mash shop and its a Menzies , brilliant great taste as always , ill certainly be going back .

Right in the middle to Braintree High Street, a real tast of London East End food. All made to traditional recipes. We had Pie and Mash take away, great value and lots to eat. Give it a try - its an institution!

Absolutely disgusting. I eat pretty much anything, even if I don’t like it. The pie is so bad my instant reaction was to spit it out!!

This pie n mash shop has the best eastend grub! Grew up on Pie n Mash in Canningtown/Stratford and this is Pukka the real deal! Lovely staff great place to eat in & takeaway is perfect! The liqour is just the right parsley green & stewed & jellied eels are top notch. Love your food Manzies👏👏👏

Traditional pie & Mash from the Walthamstow original. Friendly and authentic. Now working restricted hours due to Covid but well worth a visit when they are open.

Eaten here a few time, old english spit and sawdust eatery, good pies, but sadly not the quality or taste I remember from Walthamstow high street, But if your hungry, go. I will certainly attend again when in town.

First time of going in this Pie & Mash shop & was well happy with the 2 pie & mash I had and the rest of the clan enjoyed there's as well, the lady serving was very pleasant & polite. Would be more than happy to go there again. P.s. Only downside is it's cash only

Great traditional East end food lovely crusty pies and fabulous Liquor. Small but clean and friendly restaurant would definitely recommend and will be going back regularly !

A little bit of heaven from the old Eastend. I brought my son up on Pie and Mash he first had it at 10 months. It's just so delicious and takes me back to my childhood too.

Family-run, offering typical and wholesome East End food - dark-crusted pies, jellied or hot eels, mash and liquor (parsley sauce), in a traditionally decorated eatery. We have be several times, now, and always find everything freshly cooked . I really love the hot eels! You can take out, too. Open only in the daytime, which is a pity. Not especially cheap, but tasty.

Decided to try the Londoners favourite, was disappointed although I know of people who eat here regularly. Even though I am Londoner so is my husband we didn’t like the pies bit too flat

Went today lunchtime for a take away pies were not ready 15 minute wait, the lady serving was very nice, all 4 adults were very disappointed with the pie mash it was tasteless, pie filling was gristly, the mash and liquor was awful. Would not return. Nothing like London pie mash

With a decreasing frequency of visits to the big smoke I had almost forgotten about the existence of Manzes and certainly couldn’t remember the last time I’d sampled their Pie and Mash. Consequently I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was an outlet/franchise locally – albeit that I subsequently found out it had been open for a couple of years!It is not large, seating perhaps 30 at a squeeze but with the wooden floor and tables and tiled walls it looks like you are back in the East End. When I arrived I had to wait for a fresh batch of pies to finish, which was encouraging to hear and to know that they weren’t microwaved as a lot of eateries are prone to do these days.I had a well made cuppa whilst waiting and attended to a couple of text messages on my phone. Sending replies was a challenge as, along with the rest of that part of the High Street, the place was a mobile phone blackspot (obviously depending on your network). I told the friendly staff what I was doing and had to walk to the end of nearby Bank Street to get a signal. On my return though I was soon tucking into Pie, Mash and liquor and relieving days of my youth.Whilst enjoying my trip down memory lane I noted that cash payments only are the order of the day here but also intriguingly they offer a takeway menu! Which I intend to explore in due course.

So glad they are now in Dunmow, love this place. But please make sure you have enough pies, 3.25pm Thursday NO PIES 😞😞 ????? Very disappointed family 😢😢

Went for pie& mash today for the first time in Braintree not impressed very fatty pies lots of bits of gristle in the pies need to get better quality meat.

Met up with an old school friend who I knew from my days living in Hackney and eating pie mash every Friday night. My expectations are high and Manzes delivered. I have had pie mash many times in Essex and really haven't been a fan but I have to say this was the best I have had in a long time. The taste took me back to how pie mash should taste. Plenty of mash and put on the plate the old fashion way and not with an ice cream scoop. The pies were hot and really tasty. The service was excellent the lady who served us was chatty and really friendly. A massive 10 out of 10 for me and I will be going back really soon. I must add also the lady who served us made a cracking cup of tea. Excellent food excellent service and all for a really good price.

I have been here quite a few times since it opened and I just can't get enough of it. Huge portion of mash with 3 pies, sets me up for the day and you can get more liquor if needed. If you want eels I would suggest phoning before going and they will gladly prepare them in advance for you, if they have any. I've had them and they are the best quality eels. Just to let you know, it's cash only. For a small business it's just not viable to accept cards. All staff friendly and are always ready to chat.

81st birthday treat for my dad. He wanted both eels and pie, then jellied eels for home. NO EELS. He was so dissapointed. We stayed for pie and mash, but it was dished up while I was out getting cash, they don’t take card! So was in the stand on my return, all doors open so food was no longer hot, no microwave to heat up. The food would have been lovely if it had been hot. Thought I’d write to the manager as no eels is half the menu!! I got an answerphone message, quite rude. Saying no eels on a Monday, then this should be advertised so people don’t waste there time. And asked why didn’t I go in and complain, reason being I thought they would rather read a complaint over me going in and speaking in front of customers. Obviously not! Was not asking for my money back, they just need to put up signs saying no cards and no eels on Mondays. Poor dads birthday treat ruined, and no word of apology,or a little gesture of maybe bowl of jellied eels for him if passing, nothing. Just a flippant telephone message. So will not return and will not recommend. Real shame.

First visit to this new outlet. The "MANZE'S" name should reflect a quality offering and this did not disappoint. Lovely pies, beautiful mash and plenty of authentic liquor and all served with a smile.

Pie mash is my all time favourite food. Tasting the very best in the East End this had high standard's to meet and it definately did. Every element was perfect, the service and decor adding to the experience. Been here several times now and beats the high street rubbish like McDonald's any day of the week.

Being brought up in the East End, pie and mash was a staple food. I missed it and it was good to hear that this shop was opening in Braintree. Extremely clean with exceptional pies, great mash and, the crowning glory, fantastic liquor. Totally enjoyable in a decor reminiscent of 50 years ago.

The food was excellent fresh cooked we had to wait a while as the pies weren’t ready. We recognised the friendly lady from Walthamstow where she worked for many years. Nothing flash just good food just like the London shops. Try it. Graham

Travelled all the way from Spain to try out Manze’s in Braintree, and wasn’t disappointed! Have been to several pie & mash shops around the Essex area over the years, and have to say, this is one of the best. Just like I remembered from my days going to the Chapel Street Market shop. Will be returning!

I had a takeaway Pie, Mash and Liquor from Manze's today and thought it was absolutely fantastic. Really nice Pies, Thick lumpy mash and very thick gloopy Liquor. Exactly as it should be. I have eaten at a few different places over the years, but this certainly ranks up there with the best. All finished off with a generous splash of Chilli Vinegar. I will certainly be going back!

Made a special hour and a quarter journey to get pie and mash. Happy to drive that distance because we as a family love and miss good old pie and mash.

Over the years I have tried Pie & mash on Holloway Road, Chapel Market, Sawbridgeworth, Tower Bridge Road & Maldon. Hand on heart this one is the best. My wife cannot wait for another visit.

I live in Australia now but was born and breed in South London and one of my favorite food has been pie and mash. I visit both Orpington Kent and Braintree Essex when I come back to England. When in Orpington I go to Scott's in the Walnuts, Orpington and have never been disappointed with the meal. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the experience I had in Braintree at the newly opened Manze's. it was by far the worst pie and mash I have ever had. The meat in the pies were poor quality and tasteless, the mash and liquor were average. My husband agreed he thought it was awful and I'm afraid we will definitely not be going back there.

Best pie and mash that I've had for ages, can't recommend it enough. Can't wait for my next visit! ❤ Good, fast, hot food. Nice strong tea. Perfect liquor! The staff are really welcoming, and the restraunt looks really cool and has a lovely atmosphere.

I couldn't wait for shop to open, being from the east-end and visited the Walthamstow shop many times we had high hopes, although the Pies are not that great, not enough meat and the Large version has onions added which is not traditional Pie n Mash, the Liquor is very thin and overall the meal does not warrant the price.

Comfort food for many Londoners, this has become my secret lunchtime favourite. Authentic pie, mash and liquor made by artisans, the original fast food of London. Beats those burger combo meals for price and quality any day. Lovely Jubbly!! 😋

Me and my boyfriend have double pie and mash with gravy to takeaway. Gravy was nice and thick, mash was smooth and pies were lovely, although they could be filled with slightly more meat. Overall was very tasty and would really recommend.

Recently purchased for 15 members of staff pie & mash take away which we pre ordered at 10.30 for collection at 13.00. Had to visit the shop to place the order as there is no telephone number. The pie and mash did not look that good, the meat pie filling was either non existent or gristly and hand no flavour. Gravy tasted okay but was watery. The liquor was okay and probably the best part, although have had better/tastier. Overall a very disappointing experience. Cash only accepted and could not give a receipt! Shame as staff are local and probably will not return!

Went here recently and paid £19 for pie and mash (twice) and pie and mash to take away , seems a bit expensive , the meat was gristly for the 3rd time I've been here so the first time wasn't an accident, not so keen now

Newly opened and in a listed building so restricted to what they can do with the premises. Service was quick but limited as a long queue. When the pie and mash arrived it did not look that good on the plate and I found the pie was disappointing. The filling was not meat as I know it but minced. Mash and liquor was good. Prices were reasonable and you could have take away as well as dine in.

I was a bit apprehensive after some of the other reviews but we decided to give it a go and I had double pie and mash and liquor and single pie & mash for the wife. When I lived in London I visited the Pie & Mash shops in Bethnal Green and Hoxton and was hoping that this one was on a par with them and wasn`t too disappointed, Yes, they are a bit mean with the filling in the pies but there was no gristle and have had tastier liquor. But even so we will return and hope it does improve.

I have been waiting for years to have pie and mash again. Very disappointed. The pies were only half full of meat. Do they cook them in London and chill them to be re-heated here in Braintree? Had a fair bit of gristle in the pies and as for the liquor it was very bland, couldn't taste any parsley and looked too white and watery. Not How I remember pie and mash from London when I was a kid.

Pie was ok but nothing special, mash and liquor were good, tea was also good. I guess this appeals more with the rose tinted glasses on, as the title says... good enough

Many so called authentic Pie and Mash shops have opened in our area without success. When we heard that Manze's was opening in Braintree we were exited to try it.

Very busy when I visited but got served reasonably quickly. Pie and mash was good but not the best I'd had. Would visit again.

Good food, fast service but not the friendliest staff. Will return. Can take away. Need opening hours on the door, please help your customers!

It's a pie & mash shop: Not much more to say about that. The pies are best suited to cold weather "filling" food along with too much mash than is healthy all lubricated with that mystery "Green Gravy" as we have called it in my family for generations having come from - like many living in the Braintree catchment area - East London origins.

Very nice pie & mash, friendly staff, clean shop, shop is small only about 20 seats but wasn't a problem as with any Pie & Mash shop I've eaten in London You sit were you can.

After all the hype we visited today and there was a big queue - so that was a good sign, however when we actually got our pies there was far too much gristle in all four of our pies. This is something we've not experienced before when eating in either Harold Hill, Maldon or Basildon, pie shops.

This restaurant has just opened with much hype (Walthamstow branch a favourite of the Beckhams) so I thought I would give it a try. Restaurant was full, I think they only have about 20 seats, so I decided to try take away, for which I had to queue for 15mins. Food is extremely reasonably priced, but you get what you pay for. If your idea of a meat pie is something that has pastry the texture of a plastic carrier bag filled with mince meat and onions in a gravy in which the only flavour is salt, and a lot of it, then this is the place for you. Well what a surprise walked down Braintree High Street only to find my favorite pie 'n' mash shop almost on my doorstep. Turns out that they only opened on Saturday, spoke to the lady behind the counter and she has worked for Manze for 22 years. Chapel Street market shop and Walthamstow now closed (bet the stall holders are choked). Well if you haven't tried this, you'll soon be hooked. Double pie 'n' mash and liquor is a must. This is the only food my wife will eat with a spoon and fork apart from spaghetti. We were brought up on this delightful British meal second to fish and chips.We were there at 2:30 pm and had to wait 10 mins for the pies to be cooked well worth the wait.Steady stream of people coming in with big beaming smiles on their faces. Only about 3 or 4 tables inside what looks like it was originally an old butchers and probably a Grade II building. This will be visited by us every week from now on.We wish the family well and every success with the relocation.
