Mamma Roma Restaurant in Edinburgh, City of

Wonderful meal with family last night, the food was amazing, we all had starters and a main each and everything was unbelievably tasty. The staff are so friendly and helpful, we will definitely return next time we visit Edinburgh.

Table for four, booked online for a 9pm sitting. A widespread menu catering for different tastes (meat, fish, pasta, pizza). The dishes of our party included the focaccia bread as a starter, this was outstanding and appeared to be freshly baked. The mains included paccheri pasta with fennel based Italian sausage in a rich tomato sauce; this was my choice and was so glad it was. Could not fault any of the meals in either taste or portion size. We all thoroughly enjoyed, a great dining experience of hearty home style cooking.

I cannot praise enough the wonderful welcome, service, attention to detail food and value for money! The atmosphere was incredible. We were transported to Italy this evening! We look forward to returning in December with our family! Truly special. Thank you to everyone!

This is a lovely friendly Italian restaurant. Great service and great food at good price. There was 12 of us in our group and food all came out together and everyone enjoyed it.

Food was amazing. Family with two kids. All had pasta dishes for mains. Different dishes - all tasty and good portions. Highly recommend the dish with the clams. Friendly service and good atmosphere. Special mention to Giovani. Highly recommend

This was hands down the best Italian food we've eaten! Everybody that we encountered was polite and welcoming. We could not have asked for a better experience.

Not quite 4 for the food 3.8 /5 Lovely intimate Italian restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I ordered the mussels, felt the portion was a little small for the price. Had lovely fresh cherry tomatoes. Subtle tomato and herb flavour, lacked some seasoning. Found the same with the seafood tagliatelle, lacked some seasoning to bring out the flavours of the seafood. Good variety of seafood in the dish . But found the portion was a bit small compared to my partner who had the same dish.I like some spice in my food, the spicy olive oil that was provided was weak. Overall an ok Italian, the service was the out standing, and nothing seemed too much trouble for them . They accept both card and card. Service charge was not automatically added. I was happily to give them a tip. Good service and prompt for early Saturday evening

Nice food although the portion of calamari was super small,lasagna and pizza were delicious.Awful service though,the waitress who welcomed me andy son at the door have had a look at us (I was straight from uni) as we were not dressed accurately.Well it is not dress code required restaurant,felt judge,we were not checked if the food was alright.Obviously poor manners,I am discouraged from visiting again

Had the good fortune to eat at this restaurant last night , the food is excellent hot and tasty the staff even though very busy ( it's that good) were friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Will be back no doubt .

First time here. Went for a colleagues leaving meal. 17 of us! All of us seated within minutes of arriving. Didn't wait long on getting asked if we wanted drinks. Food was served quickly (we had pre-ordered), and it was good. Staff were friendly and quick to serve/clear food/dishes.

Lovely place for food, great range of choice with it all being Italian. Very friendly staff and good price for central Edinburgh. Would highly recommend to everyone!

Hearty Italian place with wide selection of pastas, pizzas and meat dishes. Service was alright, but it did feel like some of the waiters were deliberately not making eye contact, hence we had to wait awhile to order our food.

The food was nice, especially my pizza was good (we shared pizza & pasta). The pasta dish with fennel sausage was okay, but not a great experience, even though it came under mum's recommendations. The waiters were.. yes.. Italian. Maybe you should work a little more with LEAN (workflow), as well as a more flat and less hierarchical work culture and friendly service mindset, instead of a slightly snooty attitude.

Great place in Edinburgh to take a break from Scottish food and eat good Italian cuisine. Long hours and good service. It is not far from the new city center. To repeat.

First time for lunch and it was amazing I walked by this restaurant many times and it’s a few steps up and missed it. I’m glad I tried it today. Soup was nice and hot Fish was amazing and the waiters are very helpful and friendly. Highly recommended

My first time visiting Mamma Roma and it definitely won't be the last, we thoroughly enjoyed the great food and the welcoming and attentive staff were lovely.

A mid-level restaurant. We tried margarita pizza and ravioli but it wasn't very wow. We went directly from the airport with our suitcases in hand. Even though the restaurant was quite empty, they sat us at a ridiculous table in the corner, we couldn't understand why.

Me and my Boyfriend came here for dinner yesterday and it was one of the nicest places we have ever eaten. food was amazing and staff were very attentive, taking away empty glasses as soon as they were done etc. service was also the quickest we have ever received !

Amazing! Amazing lasgna, polite and very fast.

Really lovely staff and great service but we felt the food was hit and miss. The fried seafood starter was tasty. Pasta stuffed with pumpkin was delicious as was a spaghetti Bolognese but we found the pizza and calzone we ordered were not properly cooked so were very "doughy". But all in all a nice evening.

From the first moment, friendly, exquisite and familiar treatment. Excellent food in capital letters. We stayed several days and we were able to try the pasta, the pizzas,... everything was magnificent. Highly recommended

Oh my goodness!!!!! This was simply the best Lasagna I’ve had in a very very long time. You HAVE to eat here when in Edinburgh. Everything about this restaurant is perfect. I could t finish my meal so I took half back to the hotel to eat later in the day. Their take-away boxes are even perfect. I could put it in my purse and absolutely no problems with transporting these delicious left-overs. Hubby’s Pollo Caprese was also a hit. Thank you Mamma Roma!!!!!!

Amazing evening out!! Best Italian meal I’ve had in ages😍 the mussels dish was so good ( we got the sharer starter ) !! Only downside of the whole evening was the cheesecake .. not great :( but the staff here are amazing! Very attentive and friendly

Came here with my wife after watching Jimmy Carr, however the waiter who served us, couldn't have been anymore rude if he'd tried. My wife wasn't that hungry, so just had a wine, I had a pizza and a beer, he seemed horrified at such a small order, and almost seemed to get the hump about this, to which his attitude changed dramatically. Next time we do the Playhouse, we certainly won't be coming back here, the atmosphere was pretty dull as well to be honest.

I came in to eat by myself and the host called me honey and refused to seat me. He had some issue with me because I was alone. He didn't even offer to put me on the wait list, while there were clearly empty tables in the restaurant. This rude man shouldn't be working with the public.

Avoid this place service is rubbish dont recommend

Very good and authentic Italian food. If you want a good Italian cafe, this is the place for you.

Lovely food and service, only thing that we found confusing is there are two entrances right next to each other but the two areas aren't connected so we went to the wrong entrance to meet the person we were eating with and the staff there were confused when we asked where this person was.

Possibly the best pasta I’ve ever had! Piping hot when it came out and was so delicious. The restaurant is comforting and feels very authentic, with plenty space between each tables Staff were amazing, very quick, friendly service and accommodated extra requests.

Had to get take away due to full house, and not surprising. Pumpkin Ravioli the best I've ever had as well as zucchini fritas💜

Real Italians and a menu with beautiful dishes. We really had a fantastic meal... we didn't try the pizza and pasta... and we think that's a shame when there are so many beautiful Italian dishes.

The food was very tasty, but we had to wait an hour for our meal today. （we arrived at 8pm，but have our pasta 9pm…）We thought there was something wrong with the man who took the order. He would skip us and go order for others first. We waited for 30 minutes just to order. By the time our food was served, those who came later than us had already finished their meals. My friend said that the staff who took the order was new. He also has a very bad attitude. All in all, he resulted in a poor dining experience for me…

Had the best experience here yesterday evening. The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff were out of this world. The mother had the Pasta Capricciose (she said it was the nicest pasta she had ever had…), and I had the (outstanding) Cannelloni. We shared some delicious garlic bread, and a lovely chilled reasonably priced bottle of rose wine. A pre-theatre meal for my mum and I, we would return in a heartbeat. We are already talking about which menu options we would try next time! Thank you to all the incredible staff for making our night extra special 🫶

It's very bad when you book and they don't give you a table

It’s a must visit. The food, the service, everything is so good!

We were drawn in by the 4.6 stars on google but this place far from lives up to this rating. The dishes are profoundly confusing. Inexplicably there was a biscotti crushed on top of our pumpkin ravioli, brown beans in the sausage pasta, and the chewiest shrimp I’ve ever had in the seafood pasta. The dishes are overpriced and the atmosphere was cramped and uncomfortable. The staff was very nice, though they don’t compensate for this restaurants many shortcomings.

I have no idea how this restaurant has over 4 stars, I would give it zero if I could. The wine was like bad flavored grape juice, the pasta was undercooked, and shrimp rubbery. The other strange thing is that for some reason they crushed biscotti on top of the pumpkin ravioli? The people were nice but overall I would avoid in the future. There are better Italian places for the same price in Edinburgh.

A few minutes walk from Princes Street. Old school Italian, the food is what you would expect, service was very good and enjoyed the meal, we were in the downstairs section, airy and lots of natural light. We enjoyed our meal, the timed meal and timing on the table are to be expected. Would go there again.

We stopped by for a quick lunch and it couldn't have been better. Really friendly service, food was served quickly and both dishes were amazing. On top of that the prices were incredibly affordable for the area. The panacota for dessert topped it all off😄

This little Italian restaurant was recommended by our hotel. It didn't disappoint. Reservations are recommended. We ended up eating there 2 nights and they remembered us, even though they were very busy. We were greeted as family by the owners. We had the Pizza Pasta special on the first night which we split. It was a great value for the money. Our pasta was the Carbonara, which was so good. Their pizza sauce and crust were so flavorful! The second night we each had our own dishes. My husband opted for the Carbonara again, but I order the Strigoli al Salmone which was very tasty. We ordered cheese cake for dessert which was lovely. Thanks so much! Our stomachs were happy and so were we!

The story behind the restaurant is very special. The food is amazing and the Italian hospitality warms the heart. A must try !
