I used to visit this restaurant frequently prior to Covid lockdown. I’ve finally managed to come back again as I always enjoyed the food and the service. I’ve realised this was a big mistake! Poor slow service with only 3 tables that had clients. I was finally the only client but that didn’t make the service faster. I believe it’s under new management? The pizza has been watered down. No glimpse of tomato sauce on magherita pizza. I am really disappointed and I’ll be not coming back here again.

We were really looking forward to a family meal for my husband's birthday. Hadn't been here for some time but the reviews were good; we were so disappointed. The table wasn't ready for us on arrival, my husband's salad garnish was mouldy, we had to ask 3 times for water for the table and the food was pretty mediocre. Worst of all, our meals came out so far apart and or pizzas were cold. In fact by the time these were replaced, some of our party had finished!

Absolutely wonderful - It was our wedding anniversary - there were 4 adults and our 6 yo grandaughter . We had garlic bread and calamari to start pasta and salmon calzone steak special and spaghetti and seafood and meatballs followed by tiramisu which was divine. Everything was absolutely wonderful. very well cooked served by friendly courteous staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. We had a lovely evening and will be back. If we as customers want good restaurants we must support them especially after the pandemic. go and enjoy- you will not be disappointed.

I dined here with friends I had not seen for a couple of months, our children are pals. They were wonderful with the kids and the food was fantastic. In a town full of chains I really want to see Elena- the new owner -and her team triumph. I will leave another review under the new name, Al Pacino’s. Brava Elena!

We arrived on their first opening day after the refurbishment and what friendly efficient staff helpful and engaging. The food was amazing we ordered the grilled prawns and what finger licking flavor they were. Even the olives were plump and tasty. We sat in the sun outside with a good few Italian beers and have recommend this refurbished restaurant to all my friends

What a beautiful and wonderful restaurant with new menu and new management lovely tasting food and the best pizza I ever had food and service was excellent thank you to all of you for looking after us and making us welcome definitely be back and I would definitely recommend for everyone to eat here bellissimo

This restaurant has changed name and is no longer actually mamma Mia, and has new management and staff. We used to go there and is was amazing but went there yesterday, waited over an hour for a starter, which when it was bruschetta is ridiculous. The waitress couldn’t understand English and had to keep walking off as even as we pointed to the menu or named drinks she didn’t understand us, the manager said the chef hadn’t shown up to work so it wasn’t their fault that the food was so slow as they only had one chef trying to do everything. Unfortunately there was only three tables in play and none were well served, the service was awful with them trying to get us more drinks during the extensive wait. I told the manager we would not be returning to their new restaurant after years of going to Mamma Mia.

Booked a reservation for 8pm. When we arrived there wasn't anyone at the door and tables were waiting to be cleared. Eventually were seated and advised that due to a large group booking there was a delay in food orders and we may have to wait. Didn't have a problem with that, however, no one took a drinks order and we were just left sitting there. There was clearly a lack of staff so I really don't understand why they took our booking in the first place. We left and then had the task of trying to find somewhere else to eat, not an easy task. This was supposed to be a special meal for our anniversary.....

We had our dinner last night and ordered two pizzas for myself and my husband and one pizza mozzarela for our toddler. The pizza was delicious as always as we’ve been before. However, all three of us had food poison that night. Our toddler was the worst with vomit through the night. We just had diarea and a mild tummy cramps. We didn’t eat anything else that night apart from pizzas from the restaurant and I am almost sure that was the reason of our simptoms. Unfortunately, we wouldn’t eat there anymore and I don’t know if I would recommend it to anyone.

what a lovely restaurant, the staff were very happy and cheerful and the food was amazing. I went for a pizza which had greet flavour and was just the right size. i would certainly recommend visiting here.

Something for everyone! The children love the pizza and pasta , they assure me it is the best in Colchester. The seafood is consistently good and service is attentive. A regular first choice for a family meal out.

Visited Mama Mias at the weekend for some lunch, we got there just after 12pm and there was only 2 other couples already seated. We ordered 2 pizzas before the restaurant started filling up. We waited 50 mins and by this time some of the tables who arrived after us had their meals already. After asking how much longer the food would be, it soon appeared. Unfortunately the pizzas were horrible :( The dough had no flavour, I had ordered a quatro stagioni but received a different pizza with (what I assume was) gorgonzola on it. I mentioned this to the waitress but she told me that that is what I had ordered. My husband ordered the pizza with an egg on top but the egg was completely raw. Maybe it was a one off, don't know if perhaps they had forgotten our orders and then rushed them out, but it was very disappointing.

My partner and I visited this beautiful restaurant for dinner, and both of us said it was the best Italian food we have ever had! The flavours from the home cooked meals were incredible! (We highly recommend the bruschetta and tomato soup for starters and the spaghetti carbonara for main). The interior is nicely set out with features that make you feel like you’re in Italy and being next to Colchester castle the views are stunning! The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly and the staff are also following all guidelines and are completely Covid-19 Compliant and clean! This restaurant needs more credit and recognition because honestly I couldn’t fault anything at all and we cannot wait to visit again :)

I booked this restaurant for dinner on Saturday 22nd May 2021, based on other reviews. I wasn't disappointed - in fact, it was superb. The service was excellent - friendly, warm and always with a smile, we were really well looked after. The food was fantastic - extra sides were not a problem. Excellent wine and reasonably priced. I will definitely be going back. Don't hesitate to visit this family run Italian treat, right next to the castle in Colchester. Many thanks for a memorable birthday dinner.

Well I don’t really know where to start. From the moment of booking to the paying of the bill everything was amazing. I booked a table at Mamma Mia as I was in desperate need for some seriously good Italian food. When I called the restaurant I was told they had only just opened this weekend & unfortunately due to only having 1 chef they could only offer meals from the main menu. I did have my heart set on pizza but to be honest I think I’ve had my fair share of pizza during lockdown. No matter we went ahead & booked the table. On arrival we were greeted by a lovely hostess who offered us to our table & showed us the menus. I have to say the menu looks like something out of a true Italian restaurant. Spoiled for choice I opted for the tomato & mozzarella salad followed by the rump of lamb. Everything was absolutely delicious. The hostess asked me how my meal was & I told her it was one of the best meals I’ve eaten for at least 10 years. She then tells me the chef was the only one in the kitchen & had only been there for less than a week. Well done everyone. Can’t fault it, will definitely be returning.

This place is amazing. Menu has so much to offer. We have been twice and the food is amazing. They have a garden area to the rear where you can have a drink or 2 and look at Colchester castle lite up at night. We will definitely book again

I’ve been dining out at Mamma Mia’s for years now, and it is high time I explained to people why it’s such a nice place to visit. The position is ideal, right in the town centre of Colchester in Museum Street. There is a large paved courtyard with excellent views of Colchester Castle about a hundred metres distant. The chairs at the tables in the courtyard are very comfortable, with arm rests. Precious little traffic passes through Museum Street so you aren’t exposed to car exhaust fumes or noise. It’s lovely to sit there and people watch. There are huge parasols to give you shade or (if you’re unlucky) give you shelter from a summer shower. If you’re a smoker (I’m not) you can enjoy your cigarette in the open air here. Inside there are two rooms for lunch or dinner. The seating is comfortable with padded seats. The toilets are spotless. If you aren’t able to get upstairs to the toilets there is a disabled one downstairs at the bottom of the stairs. The staff are attentive and helpful. And most important of all, the food is divine. I still haven’t tried the pizze, quite possibly because I can’t tear myself away from the other dishes. My favourites include the veal al limone, the pollo alla diavola and the penne all’arrabbiata. The meatballs are terrific, with that kind of slightly crumbly texture that comes from being home-made on the spot, unlike the processed homogenous sludge you can find elsewhere. And the steaks are faultless; you can chose your own sauce to go with them. I’m getting hungry just writing this, so I’d better stop!

Really lovely,authentic,independent Italian restaurant in a nice, quiet side street, in Colchester town centre, right by beautiful Castle Park. My first visit which was on a Saturday lunch time with 3 friends who were treating me and a friend. We booked a table, and all was COVID-19 friendly. A warm welcome, lovely decor, ambience and staff. Great selection of food and drinks. Everything we had was fabulous. Good prices. Nice toilets. Thoroughly enjoyable and well worth a visit.

I went for a meal with a few of my friends yesterday and the service we received the entire night from the moment we walked into the restaurant all throughout until the end was spectacular I’ve never been more impressed. The food came very quick and tastes delicious, there wasn’t one thing we could fault it was amazing!

We went here for a birthday, they were nice enough to sing and bring a brownie with a candle - this was the redeeming factor of the evening. When arriving for an evening booking, we were informed that there was no pizza available tonight - I completely understand that possibly something had happened earlier in the day - maybe the pizza oven malfunctioned?We had to wait over half an hour for our drinks order to be taken, then another half an hour for our food order to be taken - the restaurant was quiet too.We were then informed that many items from the menu were also unavailable, this seemed a lot less like an accident (like the pizza) and more like poor planning. When the food eventually came (again long wait) some shellfish was inedible as the shell hadn’t opened, the pasta was really undercooked (not just al dente) and the sauté potatoes were undercooked and under seasoned. We didn’t mention it because we didn’t want to have to wait even longer for more food! A table behind us complained and they were still waiting for new food as we left.One of the waitresses, I didn’t get her name but she was a brunette - she was incredibly nice and saved the evening. Overall a bit disappointing.

What an earth was going on in here this afternoon?! Disgusted to be witness to a stand up swearing and ‘offering out’ staff row. This took place between the guy who greeted us into the restaurant (oddly) and one of the pizza chefs. Completely unacceptable and made my family and I feel scared and vulnerable. These members of staff should be ashamed and face gross misconduct disciplinary action. I’ve been a regular at mama mias for a few year, good always lovely and same for the atmosphere, but something was very wrong tonight.The food was regrettably poor also. Pasta was swimming in tasteless sauce, too much oil on the swordfish and the tiramisu was stale all of the above makes me really sad. The bruschetta garlic bread pizza and the wine were nice, but we are hurt from tonight’s experience and won’t be back quickly. Very disappointed, usually have so much love for this place....

What a lovely restaurant, food was delicious, very good value for money, staff very friendly & helpful, nice and clean, will hopefully be going again soon.

Good food,good staff and nice atmosphere!We’ve been here since they open the restaurant. We didn’t booked but we are always welcome. Alina was our server we know each other very well it’s always a pleasure to be served by her! Salmon was very tender and rich in flavours, perfectly cooked and the Swordfish as well my husband love it.Never disappointed, they have the best food in the town!

Went twice within one week. On both occasions I had pizza, which was good. Firs visit I had calamari, £7.95 a starter, very small portion which was a disappointment. Second time, I've ordered scallops with bacon and cream. £9.95 for 3 overcooked scallops in undercooked bacon and milk ( not a cream). Very disappointed and won't be recommending except for pizza only.

Lovely place near the castle. Absolutely amazing food. Pizza and carbonara so tasty. A proper Italian meal. Thank you. Our server Elena was working very hard and was very nice.

My wife and I arrived on time for a booked evening meal, they were clearly busy but showed us to a table outside. After 45 minutes (despite asking twice) nobody had come to take our drink order (let alone food), we hadn’t even been given a menu for 30 mins. There was no sign of apology or acknowledgement to reassure us they would be along soon. We saw people walk out and many others waiting for food, drink and plates to be taken away. We left after 45 mins. I’m sure the food would have been great and on another evening it could have been fine, but based on tonight (my only visit) I had little choice to leave this review.

We’d missed this place so much!! Had a wonderful meal here this afternoon. 6 of us had a range of starters and mains, all fabulous. Spaghetti frutti di mare was particularly tasty. Great friendly service and reasonable. So pleased to see it’s as good as its ever been.

wir kamen durch Zufall hier hin ohne Reservierung an einem Samstag. Wir bekamen aber gleich einen Tisch. Die Karte bietet reichlich Essen. Ich hatte Nudeln die al dente waren und die Sauce war auch gut. Meine Begleitung hatte Pizza, für meinen Geschmack war etwas zu viel Käse drauf aber sie meinte es war lecker. Zur Nachspeise gabs noch einen warmen Schokobrownie mit Eis. Das war richtig lecker.Alles in allem sehr empfehlenswert

I had not been here for many years so decided i would give it a try after seeing good reviews. brushetta was very authentic as goes well with a splash of balsamic vinegar. the pizza was of good size however a little too cheesy for my preferedd taste but other than that it was great. the other half had the calamari which was of good size and the chicken with spag bol.i will certainly be returning back here one day.

Tucked round the corner of the castle, just off the high street, with an understated exterior, no one would blame you for walking past this restaurant. However, you would be missing a real gem. The service was very impressive and all of our requests (de-shelled prawns and GF pizza base) were very well catered for. The food was excellent and it was great value. We look forward to visiting again next time we come to Colchester.

Such a great little Italian...We found this place after a long play at Colchester Castle Park a few months ago...and boy have we returned! This is a classic pizza, pasta, Italian restaurant. And they do it seriously well. Pizzas are just amazing. Sea food linguini is super special. Spaghetti bolognese, best I’ve had in uk for a long time.Staff are really friendly, very family oriented.We will be back soon.

Always lovely. Relaxed and good choice of dishes. Some good value dishes. We had vegetarian pasta dish and vegetarian pizza which were both very good.

Beautifully cooked Italian food. Best service, so attentive. And so understanding and accommodating to my one year old son when is very adamant to feed himself. Spag bol was a big hit for him & the mussels & parmigiana for me were absolutely superb.Thank you Mamma Mia’s we’ll be back again soon

Just off the main street. Spacious restaurant, no feeling of being overcrowded or overheard. Clean tasteful decor. Food came quickly, very generous portions. Minestrone soup was underwhelming, but their mussel starter was excellent, perfectly cooked in a delicious tomato sauce. Pizza was also very tasty. Generous portion sizes too. Seems to be a family run business, and very well run too.

We’ve been here on Friday night and all i can say we had a great night! Staff very friendly and the food was really delicious. I would recommend this place for everybody. Big 5 stars!!

The food here was excellent. We shared a portion of calamari to start and that was plenty between two of us. It was also cooked very well.

Set off on the back street of Colchester food was very good starters and main course service was good it’s worth a visit

Service was a bit slow, we were large table but in a fairly empty restaurant. The food lacked any authenticity and was just a bit bland. Came in with high expectations after seeing reviews but came away a little disappointed. If I were to come back I would most likely just have a pizza

I have just dined here on my own whilst working away. It was perfect.

I stumbled upon this little gem of a restraunt and enjoyed a mid-afteroon pizza. It was not only a delicious, authentic pizza bu tthe service was friendly and made us feel like familiy. Not something to miss when hungry in town. The price was great and not so busy we'd have to wait long to be seated although I think we were luck with that as it's easier to seat 1 or 2 than it is to seat more without a prior booking.

Lots of options to choose from including nice range of fish dishes. Pasta and gnocchi great as was the mixed meat platter. Small out door area to enjoy on a warm day. Nice venue just off the high street.

The restaurant, which is close to the Castle, is not distinguished on the outside, but when we ate there we were delighted. The food was authentically Italian and our meal there was a pure delight.

We came across this hidden gem unexpectedly and what a find! Despite the restaurant being short staffed the waitress was highly efficient and very friendly. She served our drinks and food promptly and with a smile and a few friendly words. I regret that i did not ask her her name as she is a great asset to this business. the food was of a very high standard I and my friend had the swordfish and it was beautifully cooked and presented.My starter, pama ham and melon, a really retro choice was excellent and the portion was huge.We all had a superb evening. the restaurant is spacious and has an outside area which understandably due to the heat was full on the evening we visited. i can highly recommend this restaurant.

Visited Mamma Mia on Saturday for a lunchtime Birthday celebration. Food was 1st class ! The waitress was attentive but discreet and nothing was too much trouble for her. There were 5 in our party and we all had starters, mains and dessert. I had whitebait which was lovely though could have been a little crisper ! For my main course I had Escalope of veal which had been cooked perfectly and topped with grilled pear and served with walnuts and a dolce latte glaze, truffle oil and balsamic vinegar. For dessert I had lemon and almond cheesecake which had a delicate flavour and was accompanied with a drizzle of strawberry sauce.

Fantastic food and extremely helpful staff made for a very enjoyable meal experience. If you find yourself in Colchester, dinner here is a must.

Went for the afternoon on father's day, not our first review and certainly not our first visit. Nice vibe, with a large Italian family having a celebration. Never disappoints, nice food and excellent service. A bit of an unsung family run star amongst the many chains that dominate the area.

Probably one of the worst meals I have ever been served, scallops were ok but the lasagna main was pre cooked/reheated, tasteless, dry, worse portion of food I have ever been served.

Ce n'était pas mauvais mais mon escalope de veau à la sauce citronnée était vraiment trop petite et cuite à la mode "carton". Pour un plat à 16 Livres, j'ai trouvé la préparation vraiment basique et un peu fade. Nous n'y sommes plus retournés.

We were in Colchester 21st and 32nd May 2019.

I went here for dinner and ordered the garlic bread as a starter, thinking I would get 3-4 little pieces of bread But I got an incredible amount of it. Way too much to finish at once. So the lady serving me told she could pack it for me so I could take it with me. Then my pizza came. It was a real delicious pizza. I think it has been a long time since I ate such a good pizza. I would recomend this pizzeria definitely if you are in Colchester.

The calzone folded pizza was off the scale amazing (and I've lived in Italy so have high expectations of my pizzas) - great big portion, cooked perfectly, lovely taste.

What an unexpected surprise to find such a good restaurant so close to the castle. Family of 4 - walk in - fantastic service and food to go back for, Swordfish, Sea Bass and Tiger Prawns all cooked to perfection. Friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere, not at all what I expected from a Pizza Restaurant. We shall definitely be returning on our next visit to Colchester.

I came to the restaurant Sunday 28/4/19 with my wife and baby. We were able to sit outside with a view on the castle. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The prices are fair for very good quality food. it was such a nice find and we will definitely come back. Well done and thank you for the great experience!

Went here with a group of workmates. Excellent food! The whitebait was tasty & plentiful! The garlic bread is immense! My pizza was super tasty and the pasta looked really good! Recommended.

Those who had pasta said it was good. However, other items such as calves liver and salmon not up to much. Desserts good. Service not that good think only one person was allowed to take orders.

Lovely restaurant with friendly service. A good menu & wine list. Food was superb. We had focaccia with avocado, mozzarella & tomatoes followed by veal in pear & cheese sauce and chicken diavola with sautéed potatoes & vegetables.

We had a table of 8 for my sons birthday it was totally outstanding from the food to great staff, than you nothing was too much trouble.

We visited Mamma Mia on Sunday and had a late lunch there . Food was excellent and staff very friendly and attentive . Interior is modern and inviting . It was our first visit and we will definitely return . Also very close to the castle and town centre . We had a really good time . Highly recommended .

Had a fabulous afternoon meal friendly staff very attentive. Food was amazing the chicken was cooked perfect, asked for extra chilli on the pasta which was perfect. Lovely wine too. Would highly recommend. Fabulous time

Have visited Mamma Mia on a number of occasions now,and each time the food has been excellent ,from their pizzas to their fish dishes on the special board. On Sat. had the Swordfish with tiger prawns which was delicious. Best Italian in town.

This is Without a doubt the best place to eat a pizza in Colchester. Today's choice is a seafood pizza with added mozarella.

This was our first time and it was a memorable day as we were having a small celebration. It's a hidden gem. Real Italian food and vibe. The place is quite and romantic. It is also a family friendly restaurant with a lovely staff. The food was so good although it is a bit pricey. I highly recommend for special occasions and will definitely be back.

We came across Mama Mia quite by accident.It is situated in the dimly lit Museum Street.A fabulous restaurant with a varied menu.The staff are so friendly.A superb family atmospere.Great service and ambiance.

I've visited mammamia on several occasions but unforunately I never write a review. A place with by far the best pizza in town (also very affordable) amazing steaks and fish dishes. A five star service to say the least beautiful atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

I saw this place earlier and thought "I fancy Italian tonight". I ordered a coke, garlic bread and seafood linguine. The garlic bread was very good, the linguine - who knows? I got swordfish. The plate got placed in front of me with a side of vegetables, I asked "what's this?". 'Swordfish' came the reply. "I didn't order swordfish, I ordered seafood linguine" 'No, you ordered swordfish'...

I took my 2 grandchildren on my own after a cold morning playing in Castle Park. GS chose Pizza, GD chose Pasta with meatballs. No children's menu but Pizza and Pasta in half portions at half price . Excellent value. Child's pizza was huge and 2 children could share. Leftovers are happily boxed to take away. The is excellent and the meatballs highly rated by the 3 yr old. Only slight comment is in desserts no offer to make half sizes. Staff were friendly but as it got busy, stretched and I had to catch their eye to order pudding and then pay. Liked the range of Specials.

My husband and our friends went to mama Mia’s last night as our usual Italian (Il Padrino, turns out they’re sister restaurants!) was fully booked. We’ve never been to Mama Mia’s before and didn’t know anything about it.

I have visited 3 times in the past month! Best Italian food in Colchester! My new favourite! Polite and friendly staff. Nice atmosphere only criticism is the dessert menu could be better

We were leaving Colchester Castle and the kids were hungry so stopped for dinner and it was amazing. Really good food!

Went here on a Saturday night. The restaurant was fairly quiet and we got a table easily. The food was great with large portions. Good service.

Very good food and well served. I heard that they use some products brought by them straight from Italy so thats how the food has the authentic taste.

Delicious food, very good value for money with but portions. 2 starters, 2 pastas, 2 slides and 2 soft drinks for £47.50! All of the food clearly homemade with great service. Really recommend this place!

We had dinner on a Sunday night, and the starters, the fish as well as the chicken and the desserts were delicious! Service was very efficient and friendly! We will definitely be back!

Fabulous food that came out piping hot & well presented. Great service as we were quite a large group of women. Staff very attentive. Would highly recommend this little gem that is hidden just off the High Street. Will be returning!

We were a group of ladies that have started a supper club trying out all the different Italian restaurants in Colchester and rating them. Well we definitely saved the best for last. The food was sublime. Fresh and individually made. You can tell the difference between a good restaurant and a chain and Mama Mia wins every time!

Called in without booking and greeted with enthusiasm which continued throughout. Food superb quality with the fish very fresh and the calves liver cooked as it should be. Will go again as the menu very varied and at a reasonable price.

Was greeted at the door, upstairs seating lovely, washroom very clean and the food, well, I thought I was at my Italian friend's house. Fresh tasting ingredients, absolutely mouth watering. Need to keep going back to work my way through the menu 😂

What a great find wonderful friendly and authentic italian resturant used to visit years ago and now its back to its very best. Menu choices vast quality was exceptional everybody in our party loved evey part of the meal. The breads and pizzas are very tasty. Milanese a real winner. Its worth coming off the High Street and heading towards the Castle you cant miss it. Enjoy

We came across this restaurant just as they were closing at lunch time, having looked at the menu, which was very tempting, we returned when they reopened for an early evening meal. Friendly staff , excellent service. A spotless and modern decor. I choose the seabass from the specials board. It was cooked to perfection , nicely presented. A lovely fresh salad and a separate serving of saute potatoes. Best seabass I have had in a long time. my son had a pasta and meatball dish which he said was very good. The following day we were meeting up with another family member so we went there for lunch. Once again, excellent food. Lovely to find an independent restaurant, not part of a chain. There is outdoor seating if the weather is good. I can highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area. Near the castle, just off the high street.

After a day out at the zoo, my 6 friends and I decided to risk booking this unfamiliar Italian for dinner - and we were all so glad we did! From friendly staff to exceptional Italian food; authenticity has been infused with a modern atmosphere here. It is set back on a quaint side-road, adjacent to the surrounding clubs and bars round the corner which are also really good for night life.

Loose end on a Saturday evening so booked a table and didn't regret it . Lovely meal , staff very polite and food out of this world , Would just say will be going there again

Great food, great staff and a great location. A perfect relaxing evening out. All four of us enjoyed everything we ate. Nothing seemed too much trouble for the staff. We would definitely recommend this restaurant and hope to go again soon.
