We have been visiting this restaurant for many years and always found the food to be very good with friendly staff who were always helpful and efficient We returned to the restaurant for the first time since the restrictions were lifted and the food served up was average at best. The staff who tended to our table were very poor and in particular one waiter who was both rude and abrupt. The people on the next table to ourselves also voiced their disappointment about the food and the rude behaviour of the waiter mentioned We won’t be going back as their are plenty of other Italian restaurants in the city who serve far better food and provide superior service from their staff

Cancelled our reservation at very late notice due to our daughter testing oositive for Covid. The owner personally delivered a full order of food, some not on takeaway menu, even though they don't deliver on Sunday.The food was delicious and he even remembered to wish me a happy birthday after dropping the food off at my home. What exceptional customer service. I cannot rate them highly enough.

Was our first day out-out to have a long awaited catch up. Cannot praise this place highly enough.. We missed happy hour to suit ourselves time wise. We hadn't booked a table for pre-drinks, but Olivia managed to squeeze us in. The restaurant was quiet because of the time we had chosen, but that wasn't a problem. The food was excellent.. Clean plates all round. After our meal we managed again (thanks to Olivia) to finish our wonderful get together outside in the sun.Will be back very soon.

Our restaurant of choice whenever there’s a family occasion. Great atmosphere and all staff know their jobs and how to make people smile.

Really well organised during pandemic. Regular phone calls to ensure I could preorder my food. Great value for money! Food was very hot when we returned home. The food was delicious. We will definitely be returning.

Don't quite get the love for this place - it's all surface and terribly formulaic. The food is very rich and you have to be to be able to afford the drinks (£20 for a very average bottle of wine you could get for £4.99 - I don't mind a 2x mark up, 3x at a push, but 4x is crazy). The service is rushed, disguised by lots of Italian chatter to make it seem authentic - they were less keen on this once my wife replied and ordered in Italian. We had booked (for a 5pm table, so hardly rush hour) and were told we could only have it for 90 mins. We accepted reluctantly, only to be rushed and told we'd only been given it for an hour, an outright lie they thought we could get away with since we'd had some of their overpriced drink - we'd never have accepted an hour and had paused over accepting 90 mins. They got quite aggressive about it, so we left and won't be coming back.

We’d never been before so didn’t know what to expect but all of the staff were super happy and welcoming. We ordered an aperol spritz, a cosmopolitan and an espresso martini and all 3 were delicious and were huge! Both pastas were delicious too - all round great value and really nice relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Beautiful place and staff were so friendly to everyone. Food was delicious lots of choice and was served quickly. Everything was well organised and nice to be able to get back out restaurants now.

The meal was nice and the staff pleasant but the drinks prices were way too high so won't be going back.

Nicely laid out with a lovely atmosphere and good food. The service was fast and attentive without being intrusive and very pleasant. I had a lovely steak Diane cooked to my liking which was perfect. I would also recommend the espresso & cream dessert for any coffee lovers as it’s divine.

We absolutely love this place. The atmosphere, food and staff are amazing. However, I take exception to the staff not returning my change, presuming it to be their tip. This has happened the last two times we have visited. Unacceptable. We always leave a good tip, often more than the change that was not returned. Will now use my card to pay the bill.

We booked a table for last night at 6.30 for 6 of us. The food as usual was delicious. Only one starter from the Specials Board ... Stuffed Mushrooms and one Tomato Garlic Bread...2 steaks, 2 Chicken dishes and 2 Pasta dishes and 3 Deserts from the Specials Board again. 2 coffees 2 teas, 1 Gin, 3 Cokes and one bottle of wine ... £117 Then a complimentary Sambuca / Limoncello Although the restaurant was busy all night, the staff were all so attentive. The Atmosphere is really friendly and typical authentic Italian.Roll on next time!

A recent family get together, including young children, was made all the more enjoyable by the friendly atmosphere at this local restaurant. Nice food which all seemed to have been freshly prepared. Well worth a visit.

We visited here for the 1st time last night after hearing great things about the place...well it didn't disappoint. Food was beautiful, top atmosphere and the staff were great. Will definitely be going back.

Called in on the way home from work. Got the food home and it was as if we were eating it in the restaurant. Fresh, tasty and hot. We had a lovely meal. Love going here to eat in the restaurant. Brilliant food. Amazing customer service with a great atmosphere and reasonably priced. See you soon!

Been visiting now for many years,seen it's transformation from a small Italian restaurant attached to a bar, to completely having the whole building to itself,the decor is good and the bar very relaxing,no matter what time you go it is always busy,which speaks volumes, I don't know anyone who has had a bad meal,Pascal the owner was very attentive and spoke to all of the diners. Only negative for me was the staff,they were very friendly and business like no complaints with the service ,but staff who were there for years have left and we didn't have the banter we normally have and this was the same on last visit different staff again. Once again food and service excellent no faults just atmosphere a little flat

A farewell meal with family from new Zealand- 10 of us, including young kids- were all made to feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Food was great and the whole atmosphere made our farewell meal very special.I asked if our kiwi granddaughter could wear the birthday hat as it would be her birthday when she returned home. Imagine her joy when staff brought out a special dessert for her without any prompting. Thanks so much for a great evening. Even my hubby was impressed and he is VERY hard to please

10 of us visited recently for a meal. Table was bpojec for 7.30 and was ready on arrival. To help we pre ordered our meals and as a result didn't wait long for service. All of party thoroughly enjoyed meal. We were served complimentary shots at end of meal. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Night was rounded off with a few drinks outside as the weather was lovely. Will definitely be back.

We came as a large family group for an anniversary celebration and we were disappointed. The service was attentive and timely and the dishes were delicious. there could perhaps be a larger range of choice on the children’s menu, but other than that everything was perfect.

Visited several times and just love the atmosphere of the place. Friendly , bit noisy, busy, happy and great customer service. . Food good value for money , tasty , served hot, never tastes mass produced. Personally I'd like some change to menu but maybe my fault for eating there several times .Feels authentic and homely .

The food was excellent, service brilliant and atmosphere wonderful. A good selection of food to choose from without being swamped for choice. We arrived at the stated time of our reservation for my midweek birthday/anniversary meal and it was both crowded and very noisy, we were asked to wait in the bar area which I didn't have a problem with. We didn't wait long before we were ushered to our table which was in the front window area where the seating was quite cramped. A couple at a table for two next to us who had finished their meal saw their friends on a table for four at the rear of us who were just leaving. The people at the table behind sat back down and proceeded to have a long catch up with the people beside us. Due to the noise level in the restaurant this was quite a loud and animated conversation. I have to be honest I found it difficult to make conversation myself or hear what my family were saying and it did spoil the special meal. The food and the service were good but I think the tables were just too cramped where we were sitting and the rudeness of the other diners didn't help.

Food pretty poor, terrible Pasta not cooked. Staff very nice and pleasant, not worth £45 for two adults and a toddler with soft drinks on a lunch time. Won’t be returning.

Visited on Thursday 17th January for a girls night out. Food was excellent and service was very good. The restaurant was very busy but we didn’t wait very long for our food.

A lovely setting for meeting friends. Comfortable bar area while waiting for our table. Beautiful food, well presented by friendly and efficient staff. And also good value for money. With complimentary cocktails at the end of our evening. I returned the following week for a second visit and would definitely recommend a visit..

It was my wife’s birthday dinner and it couldn’t have been better.

Visit here often with family, including our 2 young children. Staff are amazing with the kids and make us feel at ease. Food is delicious and decor is fab. walking distance from our house. it's our go to place to celebrate any special occasion.

Visited the restaurant for my little girls 5th Birthday. Food was delicious and reasonable. The staff were great with my two girls.

Food was lovely, service was quick but was asked to move in to the bar an hour after sitting down just after our sweet plates were removed. The quickest 3 courses ever!! Yes it was busy but we had booked the table.

We came here 4 of us 2 adults & 2 kids on Saturday 15th September for my partners birthday meal. It was our 1st time here and my god we weren't disappointed the service is excellent the food is amazing really good Italian food I would say for me the best in sunderland and the location for us is just on our door step. Went tonight because we had heard good things about this place ordered drinks this took ages as the waitress could not speak English and she did not know what bitter was took two waitresses to order booked our starters and mains together garlic prawns for me and garlic mushrooms for hubby then chicken in brandy sauce and lobster ravioli for mains waited ages for starters the owner went in to the kitchen 3 times to see where the food was eventually arrived lovely food ...mains ....When they got to the table the dish I ordered was there but something completely different for hubby I tried to tell the waitress but hubby said he would just have that one as by this time we were really fed up ordered chips with both and guess what 1 chips and 1 veg we ate our meals paid and left we .notice there was quite a few mistakes with other people's orders and drinks and no apologies we won't be going back there

5 of us went following recommendation. We weren't disappointed. Meal served promptly and all dishes were lovely. Went into bar for drink afterwards and was pleasantly surprised by setting and atmosphere. Would definitely go again for either a drink or meal.

Had a family dinner for three here. Mamma Italia is sited in what looks like a former working men's club in a residential area on the south side of Sunderland. It has its own car park and is easy to get to by car or on foot. The business is divided into a pub on one side and an Italian restaurant on the other, under joint management.

Once again myself and my family will be revisiting mamma Italia tonight at Stannington Grove Tunstall for great food and wine.

Had another fabulous evening in mamma italia last night, very busy restaurant, friendly staff and service was second to none,well done Pascal the owner for making this place the best restaurant in Sunderland, I had a main meal from the specials Summer salad with prawns and chicken for £8.90, well done to Pascal and all the staff and compliments to the chef for this lovely meal

We use this restaurant quite regularly as we can always be sure to get a really nice Italian meal with good friendly service at a reasonable price. One of our local favourites.

Fantastic meal. Lots to choose from the menu. Very reasonably priced. I had steak and it was amazing, melted in your mouth. The staff were amazing, really friendly and attentive. They have a brilliant cocktail menu and a good selection of ciders and beers. Gorgeous little outdoor conservatory to relax in after the meal. I’ll will be returning it’s a little gem of a place.

Attended with some girl friends on Wednesday , 6 of us. The food was nice but personally thought it was over priced for what it was. The table was clearly booked for another party as the staff kept coming over clearly trying to hurry us out which was rude, for that reason I wont be in a hurry to go back.

We called in for an early meal to this very friendly Italian restaurant to find they offer a great value Happy Hour selection. There was a lively buzz to the place and the staff were very attentive, friendly and I loved their authentic Italian accents! The location feels a little strange as it is a converted pub in a housing estate but there is plenty of parking and the interior is smart and well presented. For starters I had black pudding with peppercorn sauce and my wife had scallops both were very tasty. My wife had fish and I had fillet steak for mains which again we would recommend then profiteroles and the tiramisu. My only suggestion is they learn in the bar area which tonic and fruit to recommend with the range of gins in offer...... not really a criticism, more of a suggestion.

We have been going to Mamma Italia for years but have recently noticed the prices have gone up and the pizza toppings are not very good. They seem to be scrimping on ingredients which is not good. I went to a place inDurham and it was then that I realised just how little topping you get in Mamma Italia. It's a shame as we used to love the place.

We wanted a table for four for originally 14:30 for a birthday celebration, but couldn’t get one until 15:00 for Sunday lunch, and it was actually asked on the phone was other menus available apart from Sunday lunch as one of our party didn’t want a Sunday lunch. So we turned up at approx 15:00 to be told to wait in the bar for 10 mins, then asked if we could wait another 15 mins, even though a table was clearly available, we said we didn’t really want to wait longer and got seated.... to be then told when ordering they’d stopped doing Sunday lunches (even though we saw them coming out of the kitchen still), the waitress ran over to the manager when we told her we had booked for this. He came over with no apology at all to confirm what she said. Complete waste of time and we should’ve been told this when we rang up and booked. A pretty poor experience, which saddens me as I’ve read some good reviews about this restaurant and off the back of that ended up giving the nearby Rosedene our custom and had a thoroughly decent Sunday lunch there.

booked as a family of 8 for a birthday meal one Friday night. We live nearby and used to go here a lot over the years , stopped after a couple of dodgy experiences ,but returned last week ...thinking it would be ok. While the food itself is good most of the time , I can only say the waiters are just having a laugh ...mainly with the regulars and friends .eight mains arrive but only 6 side dishes , waited 10 minutes for 2 plates of veg , asked another waiter ..it arrives , cold , not just a tad luke warm, but out of the fridge cold. asked for some hot veg ,, oh its not hot enough for you ! , ..later (5 mins) , this is very very hot ...well actually we've just about finished our meals now without veg ..obviously we were just an inconvenience...we were also not allowed to cut a birthday cake ...first I had ever known this ...he was sarcastic on the way out as well....sorry Pascal but everyone's your customer here ,we know others who have had similar experiences , and there's plenty other restaurants that actually want your custom .

Was rather excited when my partner told me we had a table booked for valentines night. Had been told it was fabulous. Got there 10 mins early and shown straight to our seats. Waitress very pleasant. First impression was Mmmm, nothing really special to look at, normal looking pub turned into restaurant. Ordered bottle of prossecco which wasn't badly priced. Ordered bruschetta for starters, very poor, in fact worst I've ever tasted. Pollo Crema for mains, was nice but nothing special. Partner ordered black pudding in pepper sauce for starters and said was lovely, then he had chicken in cheese sauce, which he said was ok. Desert we had cheesecake, shop bought and farther dry. I had 2 cups tea, bill came to £59 total. Wasn't bad, but really didn't feel like it was a special meal. All women were given a red rose when first sitting down, clearly the owner ( walking around in a tatty grey jumper scowling at everyone) decided my table didn't warrant a rose!! Although I wasn't really bothered about receiving a rose, the gesture would of been nice. Don't think I'd bother to return, far better Italian restaurants in Sunderland than Mama Italia.

Once again we arrived at Mamma Italia this afternoon only to be welcomed with open arms of the staff, the food was well presented and cooked to perfection, my granddaughter enjoyed her greens, etc so pleased as she is a little difficult with them usually....

We all 27 of us really enjoyed our Christmas get together at the ever popular local restaurant. We had two long tables in the Bistro which was perfect for our exclusive(almost) dining experience. Thank you Pascal and staff for a very memorable evening.

This restaurant is always a delight. Delicious food at a reasonable price and charasmatic staff. A proper Italian restaurant. Don’t let the exterior put you off it is gorgeous inside and since the renovations it is even better.

We went for a christening do, and found this place has expanded. It used to be a pub with a resteraunt attached but now you can eat in both sections, and also just have a drink in the original bar. Food, welcome and service just as good as before, so no comprise on this expansion, except the car park is too small, but plenty of street parking nearby.

Came here as a group of 4 late on a Friday afternoon. Staff were really friendly and the food was really nice. I am usually a pizza lover but the pizza's on the menu seemed pretty boring so I went for the chicken valdostana which was amazing. The prices are really reasonable, we paid £60 for 3 starters, 4 mains, a bottle of wine and a glass of wine, which we were more than happy with. The only criticism I can give is that it's a bit dark in here, they've taken ambient lighting a bit far, practically needed a torch to read the menu and could barely see the food on the plate. All in all though, I would definitely come again.

First visit to this restaurant and we loved it. Food was lovely definitely will return. Great that they have Sunday lunch on and also the Italian menu too.

We visit most Saturdays and have never had a bad meal, staff are great with kids and prices are so good we come back every week if we can. Nothing is too much trouble and its a lovely place to sit with family and friends.

Visited the restaurant again, the food is absolutely lovely, speclials on every week and lots to choose from,atmosphere is great Pascal and his staff are amazing I would definitely give this restaurant 5 ***** you won't be disappointed

The food at Mama Italia is always awesome. I don’t trust many places to get a steak just how I like it. But pascal makes sure it is always perfect every time. From the starters to the deserts always fantastic proper Italian food every time. 5 stars.

It was nice enough but nothing special. Presentation of the food left a lot to be desired but it tasted ok. Starters were massive but mains were small in comparison. Steak was drenched in sauce but tender, however, it was too thin to be really juicy. Staff were friendly and attentive and we were served quickly but the temperature in the restaurant was far too hot. Really needs aircon as we were all uncomfortable and couldn't wait to get outside and get some fresh air. Nice to see an out of town restaurant thriving but probably wouldn't go back.

Once again we decided to book our dinner at Mamma Italia why!! Outstanding service along with delicious food. Would like to thank Pascal and his team for providing a great day. Recommend

Visited Mamma Italia for the first time a couple of weeks ago for my Birthday. Decided to give it a go as I have family who rave about this place. I wasn't expecting a lot as it has never seemed to be a well known establishment to me. However I was really pleasantly surprised at how nice it really was. We visited on a Thursday and I doubt there were any empty tables come 7.30pm. The restaurant does offer a Happy Hour but even so, the a la carte itself is very reasonably priced. Looking forward to my next visit

The southern tip of Italy. Opposite Sicily.Mamma Italia, an annex restaurant of the Ashbrooke Pub, is an example of all that is good about south Italian cuisine.Served to perfection by a fabulous kitchen staff and kind and friendly waiters.His daughter, Alex, is a dream. Kind, friendly, attentive and swift with the orders.This is a brilliant place to enjoy some lagers and ciders with friends (sadly no decent real ale) and have a very good meal at extremely good prices.A good band of friendly regulars add another dimension to this wonderful gastropub.If you are in the neighbourhood, drop in and enjoy.

Food is always tasty and staff are very friendly. However they do bring the food out very quick meaning a two course meal is over with in an hour,something to bear in mind is to remember to inform them that you want a break in between courses otherwise can feel rushed,other than that I highly recommend.

Excellent food prepared freshly every day, great for people with Italian taste buds! I highly recommend a Stagoni Pizza which includes Tomato, onions, ham and other numerous ingredients. The Manager of Mama Italia (Pascal) is very friendly and on top of everything, and is pure Italian! All of the staff members are friendly and waiting time is between 10-15 mins. The food is well priced and not too expensive, it’s child friendly and provide full refunds if the food is muddled up. This place has a good future ahead of it and makes sure everything is on time (food, bookings etc.)

The food is always superb, their recommendations (in case you fancy something a little different) are always spot on and the service is superb - oh and their prices are are spot on, this is precisely why they are packed out night after night.In the last 12 months, I have tried the majority of Italian restaurants in Sunderland and they simply cannot compete with Mamma Italia, and they were way more expensive for food and drink that was no where near as goodKeep up the good work!

With working most of Christmas had no time to do it myself so treated ourself to a Christmas meal here. Used to be a family favourite this place. And the staff are great very family friendly. But on this day considering how much we paid it was a huge disappointment portions where very small. And meal was not to the usual standard and felt so cheated and ripped off never been back again.

We went today for first time and will definitely be back! I had a chicken dish and the others had 4 Sunday lunches - all of us agreed the food was lovely. We also had a round of drinks = £55.Quick service, nice decor and very pleasant staff, highly recommended! It was packed when we left and I can see why.Keep up the good work, folks!!

Visited here bank holiday Monday and as always good Italian food - we managed to catch happy hour as well so only paid £25 for two courses each.For mains we had a pizza and a steak both very good. The waiters and waitresses here are very helpful as well, always somebody on hand to get more cutlery or clear a plate. I did feel slightly rushed by the manager however who kept looking over at our table once we were finished, albeit we didn't book prior but we hadn't been in long at all.

Having previously visited the restaurant several times, we phoned late to book on bonfire night and could only be fitted into the bar area. This turned out to be perfect. If we'd have gone in the restaurant, we probably would have gone straight home after our meal. As we dined in the bar, we ate the same great quality food as the restaurantees but we didn't rush out once we'd finished, so we stayed for another hour or two enjoying drinks and the guitar playing singer and bumped into some friends and family who were having a pre-restaurant drink in the bar. A great night even though we didn't even book until around 5.30 that same day.

Visited Saturday night with friends who were new to this place. Bar was packed with a private party and noises so disappointed at having to wait in there. Nowhere to sit and hard to have a chat. However once we got to dining area much better. Lovely and cosy. Food was great as usual although bit of a mix up with sides. We will ordered one chips and two rice ended up with three portions of chips and eventually final portion of rice but didn't have to pay for them. Staff are great but pascal is excellent he wasn't in that night and am sure he would have had them all whipped into shape. My friend said it was the best beef stroganoff she'd ever had. We will all be back again!!!

Hidden away in an estate we went for a family celebration. Great service and different pastas and starters to other Italians. We were recommended to have the fillet steak and they were all perfectly cooked to different orders. We shared chips and vegetables. For starters we had a mix of pate stuffed mushrooms, Parma ham and goats cheese, potatoes skins- all really nice. Would recommend.

friendly , lovely atmosphere. Nice bar and good range of starters. Entertainment also added to Friday night feel. Offered free drinks after meal. Also found waiters very helpful.
