The food is amazing. The restaurant takes blame for apps such as just eat who are a Terrible service and gives restaurants such as this a bad name for late delivery, it is not their fault. Do not order on just eat! But highly recommended to order from mama ritas!!

Delightful family run restaurant. Good menu and service. The fish curry was tasty.

Been waiting over an 1 hour 20 for my food and it’s been sat there 40 minutes but warm still they say . Cal them up to find out where my food is but phone cuts off! Now not answering. Such poor customer service

I wish I could write something more positive as they seem like nice people but the food was veeery late with no one having ordered before us in the restaurant and the owner didn't seem to notice/apologise for the order being late. When people walk in you should tell them if you're very behind so they're aware and can choose whether or not to buy there. The fritters had been cooked in far too much oil and were very thick, heavy and greasy and my girlfriend was concerned about hygiene (phone use around preparing food). We ordered 3 things and neither of us enjoyed the food. There was no atmosphere and it was a Saturday. Just a bit of music would have been nice. Just some small changes would have taken it from 2 to 4+ stars. Hopefully I just went on a bad day but I hope they improve to get more customers and keep going.

We ordered Curry and Sweet Fried to pick up and it was excellent! Very good and friendly service.

The plantain was burnt and swimming in oil. The fried chicken wrap was missing sweet chilli sauce. The foil container the red red and peas came in, was squashed and a lot of the red red and peas was in the bottom of the carrier bag!! So disappointed, ended up throwing it out and ordering Chinese instead

So yes ok I’m a regular here. The food is just amazing and the staff are also lovely. The lovely lady from Ghana who cooks is omg amazing and the owner and her daughter are amazing plus other staff, I did offer the owner to move in with me lol. I love quality food and I’m fussy, the fish curry or the chicken are both banging along with the goat curry. It’s authentic and I love to try different things. Tonight I had it as a take away usually eat in and is was just perfect. This place should be rammed every day. Highly recommend it. Thanks guys much luv Nick & Caroline xx

There was three of us for a meal. Each of us had something different off the menu, which was great, as we could try a little of each others. My husband had the brown chicken stew, which tasted a tittle barbecuey tang to it and had a nice ‘kick’. My son had the Caribbean coconut chicken which was lovely and creamy. I had the very very hot tomato chicken curry, I was concerned because I didn’t now how spicy it was going to be but it was really tasty and left a nice tingle in my mouth after. Although I did find it a bit expensive, I would definitely go back as the food was stunning.

Honestly Mama Rita has been opened for many years now, I can guarantee the best Afro Caribbean restaurant in the whole south west, especially Plymouth 5 *****. Comfortable sittings, great stuff and very welcoming 👌🏿

Great place! Comfy and cozy seats, nice decor and delicious food. We had the Ghanaian chicken stew and Fried rice chicken leg and they were amazing.

Had the Caribbean chicken curry. Very very nice but Hot is not spicy and the portion wasn't very filling for the price. other than that its definitely worth a try.

They used to sell their sauce in an actual bottle for 3.90, now it's the same price for like 100ml in a pot. Absolute joke.

Ordered the spicy chilli chicken and some dumplings. Nice chunky pieces of chicken and very hot but I prefer their Ghanaian stew. Dumplings were top tier.

Absolutely brilliant! We came here after being told how good it is. I had a vegetarian curry which was wonderful. I asked for it to not be spicy and they catered for my request. Both meals were very filling :) there seemed to be some confusion over our reservation, there was a Christmas party on when we arrived and my partner had booked the day before and been very clear about the day/time he was booking. However we got a table in the back room and they put the heater on for us, so it was all fine!

Fabulous food & all cooked on the spot. I had a Jamaican stew it's soooo good. My granddaughter had her favourite curry there & completely cleared her plate.

The food at mama Rita’s is fantastic, definitely now one of my favourite places to eat in plymouth. I had the black bean and plantain curry, asked for it to be hot and it was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately they didn’t have any dumplings, so we had the sweet potato fries instead which were freshly made and tasty. My partner had jerk chicken and said the flavour was great. 241 on cocktails, the pina coladas were nice and worked well with the heat from the scotch bonnets! Would highly recommend!

The starters aren’t worth it except the jerk wings but the goat curry was so tasty and jollof rice is another level overall lush neal full of flavour

The food I ordered was top class, hot and on time. Sadly I didn’t get the ginger beer I ordered but this was countered by some delicious rice as a replacement.

Great place to eat lots of good vegan options

Rude and horrible owner Terrible food Avoid at all costs. Was served chicken not fish then told I was in the wrong. Beware bad restaurant! I called you, you were so rude and would not change my order and blamed me. I used Justeat and am taking the complaint to them.

I really enjoyed everything about this place. The atmosphere, the staff, and the food tasted amazing going down. But, sadly, I got a stomach bug from the chicken. I noticed the chicken looked a little pale underneath all the jerk sauce. And pale pink the inside. But, I thought it would be okay. Everything was fine until the next morning. It’s been almost a week and I’m still dealing with symptoms. Doctor believes it’s Campylobacter or salmonella which comes from undercooked chicken. My brother got fish and he was perfectly fine. I’m assuming this is a one time rare occurrence. They have such great reviews but I would be afraid to eat chicken here again. And, I know it was from the restaurant as it was the only place I ate out at before having symptoms. And the one time I had eaten chicken in the past week. I’m sorry I can’t give you guys a higher rating.

Very disapointed, oredered Brown Stew from the fish menu and recieved chicken, the staff were rude and refused to correct the error.

Abysmal!!! Sent chicken not fish. Upset the veggie badly then would not admit there mistake or replace. Don’t ever buy from this rip off restaurant again. They should get closed for this. Rude staff very very rude owner.

Two wonder full ladies, just walked in off street sat down and was made most welcome, did not use menu knew what I wanted , in a matter of minuets, there is food well cooked not reheated lovely curry, rice, all down to the power off advertising was in hospital for 2 months late Feb, heard nurse going on about mama Rita,s kitchen, was intreged and last night I went .its a lovely cafe it not a posh resturant but so far the food is nice , and I will go back .. thank you ladies see you soon.

Basically roast chicken and then sauce is added on top. Chicken was soo hard from being frozen and reheated. Everything tasted the same. You are better off going around the corner to the soul food place. Mama Rita, please go back to cooking from scratch, people will always wait for good food.

Curry chicken, curry lamb and place your order with your eyes closed. It is in line with the taste of northerners. The curry chicken is rich in flavor, the curry lamb is fresh and soft, and the soup rice dish is empty.

I never got the food and the owner of the restaurant, Mama Rita said there’s nothing she can do about it. Very very poor service. The worst I’ve ever experienced. Paid a total of £21.49 and all I was rudely told is there’s nothing they can do about it. Very wicked people

Experienced Mama Rita’s food 3 times. Once ordering off Just Eat, once dining in, and once grabbing a takeaway. Firstly - The food is amazing every single time. No doubt about it. Mama’s Jallof rice is stunning, and me and my partner love the Jerk & Fried chicken. It is a little pricey, but worth it. The only real issue I have is portion sizes. The rice is always a fair size, but the chicken is lacking a little. It’s £7 for 6 small fried chicken pieces. The restaurant is always clean and inviting, and gives good and happy vibes. The food was always packaged well when getting take away or delivery, and still nice and hot! Staff have always seemed friendly during service. Would most definitely recommend to anyone and everyone to experience this gorgeous African food 🇬🇭

Visited this place on a Saturday evening at 20:00 based on someone’s recommendation. I decided I fancied trying a take-out so popped in and the place was empty, fair enough. It strikes me more of a café place rather than a late evening restaurant anyways. I asked if I could get the 3 course deal - not available for take out. Asked for a garlic bread starter - not available. Asked for a brownie dessert - not available, cheesecake - not available. I wasn’t left with much to go with. I ended up ordering the jerk chicken which comes with rice and peas. I waited over 30 minutes, and was eventually presented with someone I’m fairly sure was sitting on the side for the past 10 minutes. Ok… maybe the quality is fantastic. I got back and uncovered it out the bag. Underwhelming is definitely how I’d describe it - see the pictures for yourself. I get that take out dishes aren’t very glamorous but try and jazz something up in it and you might see more take out orders. One saving grace is that the food was actually tasty, the sauce is class, and so was the rice and peas. I’d say I definitely could have ate 2 portions of it though. Cheers for the good scran, I wont do take out again but I’d consider trying the dine in option at a time when more food was made available and I could get better value with a 3 course meal.

16 of us had an epic evening here celebrating a birthday meal. Beautiful and soulful hidden gem in the heart of Plymouth. The food and cocktails are delicious and authentic. Good food , laid back atmosphere, service a bit slow. No goat curry, Cold , had to keep our coats on which is not very Caribbean.

Delicious. I had the fish special. Only wish that I had had the time to enjoy it slowly (I needed to catch a bus). I'd eaten there before some time ago and expected to be pleased. I look forward to eating there again the next time I have a break in my journey.

Food was simply superb. The balance of heat and spice was perfect. The meat was so tender and the rice and peas really complimented the curry.

Little bit of bone in the curry goat also wasn’t spicy like I left in the notes that’s why 4* for that and also 4* for restaurant service for not making it spicy. Hopefully next time it’ll be spiced up.

Shocking service 50 minutes for starter and only one other table occupied so not as if busy and when it came it was very poor quality...king prawns were more like little shrimps and the kebab plonked on plate with veg missing.. Very dissapointing cancelled mains paid and left

Lost for words the food was just noooo! If you want authentic Caribbean cooking this is not the place. I attended here for a birthday event, pre-booked a table. There was no table set for us on arrival and the place was not rammed packed. We waited 20 minutes for a drink, 50 minutes for a starter . I ordered salt fish fritters which arrived with almost burnt batter edges - double cooked to reheat I guess, swimming in Grease in the middle. All starters served without cutlery. The mains arrived half an hour after that, although only one dish was served initially, two of us ladies were expected to wait another 10 minutes until dishes arrived, we had to remind the waitress again for cutlery. As they hadn’t faired well with Caribbean salt fish fritter, for my main I decided to try a African dish to see if it would fair better. My main meal jellof rice and season fried chicken, was again reheated refried and rice stale almost texture greasy hard chewy pellets. In all my life of either cooking or eating Caribbean or African food, being many times to the islands this is on the poor quality cooking range. In response to owners feedback to my review. The owners refers to me as “Karen” ( many negative connotations ) very uncool behaviour though the inability to be humble, professional and aim to serve quality fresh cooking as advertised. Correction the two ladies who took the food away didn’t want to stay and eat, being I wouldn’t risk wasting money on re ordering another main dish. They also wasn’t impressed with your service, I won’t comment on their views to your meals but I can say what they took way wasn’t looking appetising. I welcome anybody from the Caribbean to come down and taste your Jerk chicken you served and see what their thoughts are.

Really tasty food! Service wasn’t the best, food was quite slow to come out and we had to keep asking for some dishes we ordered even after. They do have a small kitchen so it’s understandable BUT when the food did come out it tasted really good. Portions are big and a great place when you want comfort food. We noticed that they have a lot of regulars that keep coming back so they can maintain customer loyalty too. I ordered the salt fish and ackee with rice and peas! It’s a must try!

I don't like going out much but my son and daughter in law insisted they took me for a meal didn't have any of the rums on the menu dint have the chicken burger on the menu so had a chicken curry and I must say the food is excellent but the lady eho was taking our orders well if she was happy in her job she needed to tell her face that I'm sure she'd just realised she had won the lottery and not put her numbers on

A highly recommended Ghanaian eatery in the centre of Plymouth. Mama Rita and her amazing team conjure up generous and rich, homemade delights for eat-in or takeaway. Regular orders from here have consisted of Caribbean Chicken Curry (chicken breast cooked with a blend of spices, vegetables & coconut milk) - £10.50, Hot Chilli Chicken (very spicy chicken in a spicy tomato sauce) - £10.95, Red red and plantain (black eyed bean sauce served with fried plantain) - £10.50, jollof rice (rice in a rich tomato sauce and spices) - £4.50, to name a few. The restaurant can be booked for parties.

The service is OK but it's takes a bit long to get your order. The decor was OK and their customer service was fine. Was able to use my blue light card discount in the restaurant. Enjoyed the food but they could do better.

The food packaging is terrible. The stew have spilled already. I ordered for jollof rice and I got rice n peas. No call from the company to inform me. This is really horrible.

10/5 for this one. Lovely ladies cooking some amazing food. Cocktails where a bonus
