Malone House has just opened its doors again after being closed since Covid . Went this morning for coffee. Positives. Waitress was lovely very friendly and helpful. Negative. Scones looked and tasted stale . Only one blueberry left at 10:o’clock. Coffee dreadful. Really need to up their game if wanting to attract more customers. It was very quiet the morning we were there and I’m not surprised. There’s so much potential and the restaurant under right management could be really good however this morning it was very Disappointing.

What a great find, we flew in for weekend visit visiting old relatives, met friends here, great service, were in cafe part. Great scones, so big and fresh, beautiful park surroundings. Staff were most attentive, also at reception, so courteous, was our introduction back to Belfast after 50 years being away. Really had no idea Belfast could be like this, so different from the back to backs of the Falls or the Shankil.

A group of 15 of us met today for Christmas Lunch, it was excellent from start to finish. The room was beautiful, and the tables were arranged so that everyone there had plenty of room and privacy. The white tablecloths and starched napkins were a welcome change from the previous year, where it was just bare tables and I am delighted the caterers have gone back to using them. The meals were superb and the service second to none . The two young waiters were charming and efficient , and always alert to customer needs. It was also excellent value for money and I will certainly be recommending it to all my colleagues and friends .

Visited here for afternoon tea with my two daughters as a birthday treat using treat ticket. When we entered we waited nearly 20 minutes before the only waitress in that particular dining room had the time to come near us. We then waited a further 20-30 minutes before our drinks arrived.....one glass of prosecco and a glass of Homemade lemonade which was just soda water and lime. There was no speciality tea or coffee but instead we received tea and two pots of instant coffee of which one had to go back as it was cold. The dainty handout sandwiches were tasty but unfortunately not enough for three people who were starving by the time they arrived. It took nearly a further 10 minutes to attract the poor waitress attention to request if the kitchen had made a mistake and maybe only catered for two customers. This was £25 worth but it probably cost less than £4 overall. The kitchen did send us more sandwiches but by the time they came we had moved on to our Speciality Confections which were also described as homemade but I definitely question this. We had two small squares of Victoria sponge, two pieces of stale lemon drizzle cake and 4 pieces of doughnut which just about equalled one doughnut. The only good and enjoyable part of this experience was two of the three scones served with little pits of jam and cream. These were very tasty. The third scone was like a piece of leftover dough which I would not serve to a guest at home. This was not a very enjoyable experience at all for any of us. Other customers also appeared to be complaining . Management really need to look at the standard and efficiency of the kitchen staff as this seems to be where a lot of the problems stemmed. They may also need to employ more than one waitress as it was very difficult for her to serve a full dining room of people to a satisfactory standard. I do not fault the waitress but actually felt sorry for her, it must be dreadful to spend your day constantly apologising to customers for something you have no control of. I would definitely not recommend Malone House to anyone. This was definitely not as described on Treatticket.....

poor sad news regarding scones... they were so big that trying to get them buttered on the side plate provided after slicing was impossible. the 2 halves couldn't fit - each half needed a plate! and even sadder news - the outside of the scone was as hard as a brick, and the wee butter portions were still hard as concrete and unspreadable(tip - stick the butter portion under ur cup of tea/coffee and the heat will soon make it spreadable!) was shocked to find that find that the uneaten scones (including the ones that had been cut in half cos folk thought they were too big) from registration were the only thing on offer at 11 o'clock break. also no cutlery readily available for folk with dentition difficulties at lunchtime? it's embarrassing to have to ask for knife and fork... everything available presumed intact gnashers!!

I was out for a walk with my wife and our toddler. After the walk we decided to pop into Malone house for a cup of tea and a scone. When we got in there was no staff in the dining room at all. After 5 mins a waitress came in. She ignored me when I asked if we could order. She went to another table but it would not have killed her to say 'I will just be with you in a few mins'. She also did not offer a high chair for our toddler, i had to go and hunt it down myself.5 mins later we put the order in. The waitress brought us the wrong flavour off scone and no milk for my tea. The waitress left the room for the entire duration of our stay. I had to borrow some milk from the next table. At no time did anyone ask me was everything ok. When it came time to pay there was still no staff around so I went to reception. I was so annoyed I asked to speak to the manager. The manager had zero interest in addressing my complaint she just looked at me blankly. The level of indifference of the waitress and the manager was astounding.Unfortunately I have been to Malone House many times over the years and generally the service has been woeful. Slow and completely indifferent.Malone House has great potential - good parking, lovely building, nice walks. If run right that place could be a goldmine. I was hoping when Amadeus took over that you would shake things up but it disappoints me that nothing has changed. You only have to look at how busy the lockkeepers cafe is to see the potential in that area. I can understand when dealing with the public you get some very fussy people but all I wanted was a scone and a cup of tea. I don't even want to single out any particular staff. The vibe you get from most of the staff is positively hostile at times. There just seems to be a culture of indifference in that place - like customers are an intrusion.Other general feedback. The menu is extremely limited. Even worse for me as a vegetarian there is only one dish on the menu. Also the tea and coffee, it is not that nice. I got know how you mess up tea but something is going on. Is it the water, the pots? I don't know but try them yourselves something is up. I also had a flat white coffee on my last visit that was undrinkable. A great location let down by bad management.

I didn't realize this place had changed until we looked at the completely new menu. We had a variety of dishes, some good and others just fair. Reasonably priced. The salad was fresh, as was the bread. But my wrap tasted bland. There isn't a separate kids menu, they must get half potions of the adult menu dishes. My youngest didn't like any of it she just had a bowl of chips. The waiter was pleasant but it was too busy for him on his own. The food was very slow in coming. I had asked for hot drinks with the meal which didn't happen. My latte was horrible when I did get it. We have visited here numerous times over the years and my main gripe was always the staff who were mostly disinterested and sometimes rude. But we always tried it again as the food was good. I am unsure if we will be back.

Over this place but hadn't been in a while. Arrived late to meet friends and went up to order my food and after waiting for ages for the waitress to notice me she said "sit down, i'll come over and take your order in a minute". I explained my friends had already ordered so I was keen to place my order and eat alongside them, so she took my order. We had beef stew and seafood chowder. Stew was rooted to be lovelyand our chowder was very tasty ( mostly just salmon, no prawns or mussels). Twice there was a clatter and sound of things breaking in the serving area. Waitress appeared very gruff, no smiles, no asking how the food was, no pleasantries. We ordered coffee and one person wanted a tray bake but had to go up to get it. Overall still agreat place, tasty food, not too expensive, but could do with the staff cracking a smile!

Plenty of veg and potatoes accompanied and no complaints about the quality and freshness of the food. Head Waiter Rafael was very attentive and we'll assisted by Shannon. They went out of their way to make sure everything we asked for was done. It's a great place for family meal with grandparents. Great setting with views of the park and a lot of work has been done to Barnnets to make this a strong option if you are planning a wedding reception. Christmas tree and decorations up made it a lovely occasion . Well done to Belfast city council and the Amedeus who run the restaurant. Can compete with the hotels.

Having visited this restaurant for many years, we decided to try out the new caterers. What a shock. We ordered a latte and scones each, as is normal for us. The coffee was lovely and very warm, but they did not have a caramel syrup which I would get sometimes. Also the variety of scones was very poor, gone are the apple and cinnamon which my wife loved, leaving only the basic plain, fruit or cherry, which you can get in any cafe. The scones were certainly not baked fresh that morning. They were hard and tasteless even with jam and cream on them. To add insult to injury, the price for the scones had increased dramatically. Not worth it. On another day we exited to try the filled soda. I got a sausage soda and my wife, a bacon soda. She said that the bacon was not very nice, it was tough and slightly smoked. My sausages were not too bad, warm and tasty. The sodas were barely toasted, just warmed. When we first looked at the lunch menu, I couldn't believe the total change in the food. Gone were the lovely lunches from th eprevious menu and replaced by almost a takeaway menu. I suggest these caterers should reexamine their food preparation, lunch menu and prices. The original menus under Castle Catering were very appealing to lots of people, hence it was always a popular venue. Not so now. We have noticed a sizeable decrease in customers in the restaurant. Feel sorry for the staff who, if they have become disillusioned, have a reason for this. The Belfast City Council department responsible for the Malone House catering should take careful notice and do something urgent befor the restaurant will be forced to close due to lack of numbers.

Myself and 2 sisters arrived at approx 12.50pm at this restaurant for a special lunch. It was busy but there was 2 free tables with 2 seats at each. I asked the waiter if I could pull one of the seat over and he abruptly told. Me no! He went to another room to check for a table. And then came back and pulled a seat over to the table I asked for originally. After about 6/7 minutes wait we got the menus. At this stage it was approx 1pm. Our order was taken and at 1.25 when we asked how much longer we would have to wait, the waiter told us there was only 1 chef on as the other one called in sick and there was also a function on upstairs. If we had been told this when we arrived we would not have stayed. There are too many restaurants in Belfast for this establishment to treat customers in this way. When our food did come it was very nice (but nothing special)! We all agreed we would not visit this restaurant again - very disappointing.

Malone House is a very beautiful Georgian building, set in Belfast's Barnet Domain, once home to the Barnet family. Today the domain and house are owned by Belfast City Council. The Domain is still extremely fine; very well maintained, with lawns, paddocks with sheep and cattle, tree lined paths to ramble, space to exercise a dog or just enjoy unspoilt countryside on the fringe of the city.Malone House has a cafeteria and a restaurant. Not long ago the restaurant was one of very few 'traditional' silver service restaurants in the city in which one could enjoy lunch. Belfast boasts - and boasts hugely of - a large number of would-be trendy eateries, but very few where white table cloths set the tone in a finely proportioned Georgian dining room. No more. Except on Sundays, at Malone House one now dines on cheap, scored tables. The menu too has moved firmly down market, as has the standard of food. Prawn salad seemed a fairly safe choice. We asked for the inevitable Marie Rose to remain on the side. It did - for a very short time. I can honestly say that I have rarely eaten such tasteless prawns. Sad to see an opportunity squandered. Given imaginative management and a decent chef, Malone House could very easily become a destination restaurant. Ah, well...

It teemed down with rain the entire night, but it didn't dampen the spirits. We had food in Malone house which was brilliant, and reasonably priced. During the film we were able to go in and out of Malone house to avail of the bar facilities, nothing beats the views of the Shaws bridge over the canopy of trees into the valley of the forest. An excellent experience, would definitely recommend a visit preferably on a dry sunny day. This venue is owned by Belfast City Council. Set in the Barnett estate, there is a long driveway and then a magnificent white stone country house. Ideal for weddings etc, there was a bridal party in the carpark when we were there. They had chosen to hold their reception elsewhere but were using the spectacular grounds for photos. We required disabled access and that was great - right to the front door and ample parking. The cafe area is small and the table had such huge heavy chairs it was hard to move them out of the way to allow a wheelchair in. That said, the staff were most helpful. There is a good snack / light bite menu and all of our 4 choices were enjoyed. They are on the generous side, so you may wish to share. We especially enjoyed the quiche / filo tartlet choices but the Rathlin scampi was undercooked with wet battter and the chunky chips certainly needed a double dunk. There is a selection of tray bakes / scones under a closh, which is a neat way of displaying goodies. The cloakrooms are clean and handy too with large, disabled facilities. There are a couple of paths at the rear of this beautiful house, where is it possible to push a wheelchair and allow every one to enjoy the view.

I had booked in advance an afternoon tea at Malone House as part of my wife’s birthday treat. We had an immediate bad impression of the ‘tea-room’ when we walked past an uncleared table with food on the floor (which remained like that for most of the time we were there). We were shown by waiter to a small wobbly table against a rickety room divider and even before we had a chance to sit down were asked if we required tea or coffee (no choice of coffee or tea variety was offered).Coffee and tea soon arrived in small battered stainless steel pots and the waiter left us to our own devices. My wife’s coffee was ok but my small pot (capacity less than two tea-cupfulls) contained tea that was tepid and very strong and hardly drinkable. In fact it contained two tea-bags of dubious origin which had obviously been stewing in there for some considerable time.I had hoped that a waiter would soon return with sandwiches etc (as described on the menu) and I could at least get some hot water to warm up and dilute the pot of rapidly cooling tar substitute masquerading as tea. After twenty minutes of watching two waiters running around like headless chickens trying to take orders from a small party at the other side of the room simultaneously with sweeping the floor beneath the uncleared table, we decided to give up and leave. As we were about to leave a waiter appeared, not to serve us but to ask us to get up so that they could move our table in order that they could drag more tables out from behind the room partition. We then decided to give up and leave and complain to reception on the way out. The two receptionists seemed totally unconcerned about our complaint. One of them thought it all hilariously funny and continued laughing out loud all through our complaint and wanted to charge us £26 for a coffee and two teabags drowned in a pot of tepid water. We paid her 10p for each teabag and £1 for the coffee and left the building.I found out later that this is not a real tea-room run and staffed by professional caterers but a glorified cafe run by Belfast City Council in a building they own. My advice to visitors to Belfast is don’t even contemplate going to Malone House.

called here as the weather was miserable and needed cheering up. The park is lovely even on a winter day and Malone house is cheery and warm Had a great afternoon tea with lots of coffee and tea, finger sandwiches, cream scones and buns. They also have a bar but as i was driving no drinks. there is alsoa restaurant that serves more proper meals but its a great place and staff are very friendly and helpful

Sun was splitting the sky, so call in on way home for a stroll around the parkland and cuppa afterwards. Lovely location set in in rolling grounds with the original country house being used for hospitality.Went for the Soup along a cuppa, soup being nice but not outstanding but a generous enough portion. The staff while friendly lacked some basic skills which with a little extra effort and imagination could make this place excellent. . However worth a visit anyway and take advantage of the grounds for a good walk.

Went today for Christmas lunch with four others. The House is in a lovely setting and provides a great ambiance. Excellent menu, great service and unbelievable value. Must be the best value in Belfast (4 courses for £17.50).This was my fourth visit this year and all have been good. Will definitely be back again next year.

For a high grade restaurant, I was disappointed with the service we received. We prebooked a month in advance a private room, but this room was given to some other party,we were seated in the main dinner room. This did not allow us to get up and visit with our relatives We ordered our food ahead of time, but the meals did not come out all together. Seeing that we were coming from Canada to visit with relatives that night, it lacked something to be desired.

Malone House restaurant situated in beautiful building in fantastic grounds. We called in for lunch on a busy Saturday and are delighted to say food was excellent. We both choose the soup and sandwich option. Piping hot homemade vegetable soup, thick and full of flavour. Sandwiches well filled and tasty, served with small salad and crisps. An excellent choice at a good price. A first class lunch experience.

Have been here numerous times over the years. Mainly in the tearoom. The scones and coffee and meals are lovely but the majority of staff let the place down. There is one particular older lady who doesn't know how to treat customers at all, specifically those with young children. She has asked me to move from a big table before in the morning, with my pram and young baby after I had got myself organised at the table and my friend had arrived. The place had no other customers and only 3 other tables were occupied when I was leaving. I have been back after this and 1 person has been sitting at the bigger tables and the place was a lot busier and they have not been asked to be moved.

Booked here for Mother's Day lunch as I'd never been here before and I was also looking a more traditional menu to suit a picky grandmother! We arrived early but pleasantly found the table was ready and we were seated quickly. The Mother's Day lunch menu was great - fantastic choice throughout all three courses. I had a moreish goats cheese and caramelised onion tartlet followed by pork with walnut and apricot stuffing. The pork was a little dry truth be told as it had been sitting out for a while but the portion size was huge and our mains came with additional mash and veg. I enjoyed a gorgeous orange and chocolate cheesecake to finish. The rest of my family enjoyed their meals. My mum and grandmother both got pot plants as part of the £26 price so I couldn't fault it. Malone House is in a lovely setting and perfect for walks. The restaurant itself maybe needs a bit of a makeover but I couldn't fault the food and it's perfect for family visits,

Have been visiting here for many years. Mostly for Latte and scones. Never disappointed. Latte is lovely, in recent years, thanks to a young member of staff, I discovered that I could have a caramel flavouring added to the latte. Delicious. Had the odd meal but, as the recent menus did not suit me I would just have the soup followed by the latte and scone. Staff very friendly. Have got to know many of the restaurant staff as well as the receptionists personally. Highly recommended.

As an aspiring photographer I decided to use the grounds of Malone House to do an on-location photo shoot on and around the grounds. Reception provided me with all the information I needed and the facilitation fee was very reasonable (enabling me use of the facilities between 9-5 which was more than enough time for me to get the pictures I needed), I was really pleased with the service I received upon arrival, the staff were very pleasant and accommodating not only to myself but also to the Models and the Make-Up artist I had hired for the day, the grounds were beautifully kept and the views were stunning. I'm glad that I chose Malone House and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, I can't thank them enough for their hospitality and as a token of my appreciation I sent them my favourite picks via emailMy Overall rating? It was a lovely walk in the early autumn sunshine from the bus stop to the house. The grounds are extensive and looked very vibrant. While the house façade is not overly decorative, the setting is attractive. The interior is nicely decorous, with a selection of wall paintings and an impressive staircase. The tearoom looks onto the lawns and is a grand setting for gentile afternoon tea. It was busy but the service was pleasant.

Stopped at Malone House for coffee and scones with a friend, as I often do. It is a beautifully restored old house, formerly the Northern Ireland National Trust headquarters, at the top of a hill with well maintained gardens and parkland, part of the Lagan Valley Park, where there are lots of walkways through the woods and parkland, and alongside the Lagan River. Upstairs from the cafe (and restaurant) there is a gallery where art exhibitions are held, and the house also has function rooms. The coffee and teas are tastefully presented, and scones come in a choice of flavours, and with butter, jam and cream. They are always freshly baked. The staff are friendly and efficient, always ready to take any special needs on board. Thoroughly recommended.

Malone House has lots of potential but sadly it does not live up to it.The restaurant looks reasonable value at £14 for 2 courses but the food is poor quality. The spring rolls were garnished with 2 pieces of lettuce and a couple of slices of pepper. The meatballs were as described balls of ?meat but the spaghetti was soft and gloopy. The steaks were ok but a dried up mushroom as garnish and very "tired"jumbo chips not very appetising. It is a lovely building but an 8 foot high 1960s steel fence surrounding it does not enhance its appeal. Belfast you can do better please try.

We were soooo looking forward to our meal here as it was to celebrate our wedding anniversary and a special occasion for my son. (Our wedding reception had been in Malone House). We were a small party of three generations. I requested an accessible seat due to one of the guests limited ability and we were seated near the door which was great.I had phoned the day before to ask about children's menu's and options for fussy teens and after checking with 'Kate' was advised by reception that we could chose from the menu in the other room.We arrived on time but other guests were late due to the roadworks on the Malone Road and my husband went in with the kids however when he asked about the other menu was embarrassed when the waitress said there was no other menu, and called over the head waiter who made a bit of an issue then finally agreed that there was the menu from the other room that one of the teens could use. The table was set with fresh jugs of water however, of the seven glasses on the table, five were dirty, with lipstick stains, greasy fingerprints and dirt. The waitress was very apologetic and replaced them promptly.Having said all that the food was very tasty, the choice was as expected for Sunday lunch and the portions were generous. Slight downside, only two waitresses on for the room so 4 mains arrived with a delay before the rest of the meals and the veggies, so meals were starting to get cold. We didn't get offered our tea/coffee which was part of the lunch deal, I think staff were getting ready to leave. We couldn't see anyone to ask. As the older guests were getting tired we left without it. Prices were reasonable and the food was tasty but I was a little disappointed overall. I hope our experience was a one off and that Malone House is as good as I remember it.

Malone House is a splendid early Georgian house in parkland - a great location for a meal. It was an easy choice for a Sunday lunch and the weather was kind. However, on entry we were directed to a table placed directly beside the service door. Our request for an alternative was declined on the basis that all other tables were arranged for groups and any move would upset the direct lines required for service - not for customer ease! I nearly left but was encouraged to stay by my wife. Sadly, the meal compounded our disappointment. Starters were adequate but mains were stodgy - overcooked lamb and beef relying on gravy and size of portion lacked flavour. Lemon flan lacked any tartness and didn't recover the situation. The staff seemed inexperienced, their enthusiasm being the only positive aspect of the visit.

I had to arrange Saturday lunch for a family group, and a cousin suggested Barnett restaurant in Malone House. I had expected it to be good, but in fact it was great. The restaurant is in a beautiful traditional room, with traditional white tablecloths etc. Coming in out of the chilly damp March air it was pleasingly cosy. The food was relatively simple but delicious with excellent locally-sourced ingredients. The service was friendly and efficient. And the bill represented good value for money.

Went there for afternoon tea. Waiter was very helpful but there was no atmosphere and it lacked finesse. Sandwiches were covered in dressing but they did make me some specially when I asked. There was no cake stand which seemed odd considering it was afternoon tea, there was no selection of teas available and the cutlery was full sized which made it far too large to use with the pastries. It was fine for £18 a couple but nothing special.

The wife went for the special which was salted chili bites with skin on skinny fries and side salad, son had sausages and chips and I had bacon, brie and red onion marmalade panini with skinny fries coleslaw and side salad. Picture below. Overall total was around £30 which wasn't too bad for two big plates of lunch and coke zero and child's lunch. Highly would recommend The Secret Garden to anyone looking for a high quality meal in the Dundonald area.
