Cosy small place on Epsom high street with great selection of freshly made sushi. I felt this place is underrated and had great value of money. We will def be regular here. This was our first time eating at Makiyaki, a friend recommended it but unfortunately in the past when we have tried to get a table it’s always been booked up! Finally we managed to get a table and we were not disappointed… the food was delicious, the soft shell crab was the best I have had in the uk! The service was superb and the atmosphere was very relaxing and friendly. Definitely our go to place from now on!

Food quality was acceptable, just a little bit less choice of sashimi. For cooked food, I thinks it’s fair enough to go for a try!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this sushi restaurant yesterday (this was my second time back and I bought my husband with me), and I must say it was an exceptional experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with warm and friendly staff who made me feel incredibly welcome. The food was exceptional and the presentation was the stunning. Each piece looked like a work of art, almost too beautiful to eat. The attention to detail and the care put into the presentation truly elevated the dining experience. My wife couldn't wait to take me to this sushi restaurant last night. She enjoyed it so much with her friend and wanted me to also experience it too. I must say I was very impressed with the food, the sushi was like a piece of art, beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. The amount of choice and wide selection of sushi available was truly impressive. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and very attentive. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated, creating a lovely atmosphere. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a top- notch sushi joint!

The best sushi I have ever had!!!! The owners are so welcoming and kind. This is now the second time we have come as a family and absolutely love it! The quality,the presentation and of course the taste is impeccable,I honestly cannot fault anything! We tried the Buckingham,Ocean, Crunch and Titanic this time and oh my goodness they were all fantastic! Please do go as you will not be disappointed 😁

Fantastic little gem in Epsom. We were welcomed warmly by the owners and had an amazing sushi lunch as a birthday treat. I would highly, highly recommend this restaurant. The food quality was excellent and the presentation was lovely. We had the England, GoGo and Baby Dynamite. I seriously want to go through their entire menu as a family and figure out a tier list. They have been around for 13 years and you can tell.

Favourite sushi place we've been going to for nearly a decade! Their lunch offer was great value and have wide sushi selection for everyone to enjoy on their menu! Staff are very friendly and accommodating. Their ice cream tempura is my all time favourite dessert and a must try! Can't recommend this cozy restaurant enough!

I used to go for lunch here with my baby daughter (materinity leave) in 2015 and back then I was so impressed by the freshness, the portions, the cleanliness and Jay (the owner, down to earth and warming service skills). It's always very quiet and clean so this automatically gives you a nice ambience. Fast forward to now, whilst most establishments have gone downhill after covid, Makiyaki went up several levels. They updated the decor (gorgeous), their crockery is very up market and their sauces that are drizzled over the sushi is fantastic. Jay the owner is extremely humble and polite and is a great chef and puts his all into everything his does. Alongside him, his wife also runs the restaurant. She is very efficient and conscientious about every detail. It's nice to see a restaurant go from strength to strength and their dishes are worth every penny. Recommendations are: scallop Volcano, scallop crunch, Gyoza (very fresh), England, Spider and kingston roll. I have lots of other favorites but the new addition is their pancake desert. Wow.. Thank you for always delivering an excellent experience and of course we shall be back.

Superb each time.. I came in Dec with the family and again for Valentines. I wrote a post previously but had to write another because this place never fails. We also had a takeaway (on time and still warm wow) and it was on par with our dining experience. The deserts are just fantastic here and it's rare to get a great meal all round (Sushi was so fresh, Scallop Crunch, Spider and Volcano were the "cream of the crop"! We are hooked. Thank you for making our Valentines even better! We came out of here more loved up than ever! Cheesy but true.

Second fiddle too Uber eats. A family meal in the cosy restaurant. Food was great. Authentic- even the cans of coke delivered to the table are ok. But delayed distracted staff and hoards of moped drivers in wet weather gear ruin it. Concentrate on your customers not the £!

We were very disappointed in our dining experience!! Waiting for over an hour for our meals was bad enough, but the quality excuse for food that finally arrived was downright infuriating. As if that wasn't enough, my husband's order seemed to be a mere afterthought, still pending while we endured this ordeal. This level of service is not only unacceptable but also insulting to customers who choose your restaurant. The sushi was nice, though, but the other food was not worth the money we paid for it!

This place is great, the service is attentive but relaxed and the food is exceptional, the sushi is out of this world amazing. Go alone, go with a friend, it won’t matter when you start ordering the sushi. The best thing, it seems family run by genuinely lovely people who care for what they do, provide the freshest ingredients and work hard. Go and try 😊

I’ve been coming to Makiyaki for many years, it’s one of my favourite restaurants. The food is always excellent, the service is great and very reasonably priced for a lovely meal.

Small, cosy, and welcoming restaurant serving a good choice of noodles, udon, and sushi. Average prices, friendly waiters, good-sized portions. The tempura was crisp and tasty, and the noodles and udon were nice, but a bit bland.

This is a rather unassuming but cozy restaurant on the Epsom high st. Service was great, food was fantastic, and the less-than japanese themed interior had a pleasant vibe. Will happily return for the food, which is some of the best japanese I've eaten. But interior could do with more style.

We love Makiyaki Epsom, have been visiting the restaurant for years and never once have we been disappointed. The food is always fresh, the restaurant very cosy and service spot on. This is our go-to place for romantic dinners in Epsom. The owner is very attentive and welcoming, a gem!

Ordered through deliveroo, they decided to cancel my order after I waited an hour for my food. Poor service.

First, there is No air conditioning in this hot weather or don’t bother to switch it on; I want to say, I am a foodie and have eaten proper Japanese food multiple places including top places at Ginza in Tokyo. The Katsu Chicken curry I ordered is probably the worst I had in my life. The chicken was tiny (I wished I took a photo, I just wanted to finish it and never come back again). It is only 1/3 of the size other Japanese restaurants normally supply. Yes it’s inflationary era in this country, but this is not how you should treat your customers with dishonesty proportion. Lastly, the service was great, but I came mainly because of food. Sorry.

This review is in relation to a takeaway order covering a number of dishes (prawn tempura, omelet and sushi). The quantities were large, and delivery time acceptable. But the food itself was rather mundane, quite devoid of any taste. There are certainly better options locally for actually marginally less prices.

I’ve genuinely been raving about this restaurant to all of my friends and I finally got to go again, it’s very quickly becoming my favourite restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious, affordable and clearly very authentic, the staff are very polite and appreciative of your patronage, and the restaurant is beautifully decorated — I will definitely be going again when I get the chance.

Delicious sushi rolls and tempura, udon and bento ok. Price reasonable. Convenient location close to Epsom High Street. My family will visit Makiyaki around once a week, very friendly service. Highly recommend!

Lovely restaurant serving fresh sashimi and sushi. We were a table of 7 during a busy lunchtime and the service was quick and smooth. Very friendly and attentive service. Highly recommend.

Cosy atmosphere and great selection of foods.

I am still awaiting a call from the manager who promised to call us. We ordered online and were able to order a delivery. After an hour it was still not listed as ready and still said it would be arriving with us at a set time which kept getting later and later. They phone us to say that it was a takeaway and we had not collected it yet. They said they had sent us confirmation the takeaway was ready. This most definitely was not received and our information was still saying it would be delivered. They told us we had to collect. Food was freezing cold, staff were rude and manager would barely talk to us and said he would call us. Still not got any response or interaction from them. For the price we paid, cold food and no contact from the manager is absolutely not acceptable.

As per usual, Makiyaki have cancelled our delivery order, 20 minutes after placing it. This has now happened on the last four occasions. Good food, but one of the most unreliable restraints I’ve ever ordered from.

Just had a delivery .. whilst it was very quick thanks to Deliveroo the food wasn’t up to its normal standard. Chicken skewers were near on raw … and the chicken yakisoba was smothered in ginger and completely ruined the dinner … the gyoza were lovely but to be honest a complete waste of £45 !!

The worst service ever. The people were obnoxious and odd. They forgot to serve us food which made us wait for an hour including our small baby. They preferred to serve food to deliveroo drivers who came after us instead. When we reminded them about the dish that was missed they gave us £2 discount which was ridiculous. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Excellent sushi, with lots of classic and modern sushi options

Absolutely unreal! I’ve been searching for a half decent sushi place around Epsom recently, usually you’d get the best in London city but locally this is by far the best. Small on a side road in Epsom, with downstairs and upstairs seating, cute, intimate setting inside. The food though! Okay we got a mix of cooked and raw sushi sets and everything was fresh and delicious! Highly recommend for local sushi! We also got some noddles, edamame and gyoza, which were equally delish. Wish I’d taken photos! Even our 1 year old enjoyed the prawn and avocado nigiri sushi!

Very poor service and unpleasant experience. This restaurant is basically a takeaway with a few tables squeezed in. Waitress rude, inattentive and prioritised answering the phone and sorting out takeaway orders over service. They had the audacity to try and add a service charge and were totally disinterested and unapologetic.

This is the best Japanese restaurant I’ve ever been to in the UK. The menu had a lot of interesting options. All the dishes I ordered came out very quickly and tasted so good. I will definitely come back to try everything here. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are in town.

The prawn tempura donburi and sushi selections were excellent. In particular, the COVID safety measures were followed well, asking us to do the NHS QR code sign-in, staff wearing masks, keeping everything clean, and a great waiter (didn't catch his name!). Made for a fun date night!

Food is okay. My JP friend said the yasahi yakisoba is unauthentic tho... said she has never tasted something like that in Japan before. One thing to remind the staffs, please put on a mask when you are preparing sushi and whatever food. That kind of disgusts me during this tier 4 condition. Also, staffs can be more friendly. Its kind of rude to bang the door and say nothing right after passing the order to us.

Asked me to collect the food 50 mins after ordering, arrived on time and was asked to wait 10 minutes... ended up waiting 25 minutes before I received my food and they forgot to include 2 items. Wouldn’t recommend. Had NO sashimi available ... for a Japanese sushi restaurant this is poor. When I complained, the server laughed at me and said thank you.

One of my favourite restaurants ever. It's obviously really sad now it only does take out. How will they survive without alcohol sales and tips? The sushi is still good but maybe portions a tad smaller? Their signature dish is the tuna and garlic salad. It's truly amazing and I never normally eat salads but I swear this one is something special.

Spent over £30 on two people to receive half a roll each. Not good value for money. Delicious, but overpriced.

I had the katsu curry and some sashimi as well - these were actually pretty good. To be honest I wanted another katsu curry afterwards. It's a fairly small restaurant and the same music on repeat in the background so it can get a bit intimate when chatting. It started to get busy after I arrived and it was taking a long time for service - but there was only one waiter and one cook from what I could see. I was in a rush for the cinema so was getting slightly impatient but I did make it. I think if I wasn't in a rush then it would have been fine. The waiter speaks English well so ordering was effortless. I will be visiting again - when not in a rush - and also try out the desserts next time.

Yummy! The eel was perfectly flavored. Portion size was great as it allowed just enough room for a very tasty dessert.

I ordered my food originally being told 35-50mins. Order went through then told 90 mins. Really looking to the food so ok with it. 100mins later I ring to ask where my order is and it hasn't even left the restaurant yet. They have the order but it's going to take another 20 minutes to get to me. How on earth can any delivery take two hours to deliver when I am a ten min drive from the restaurant. No apology just facts with refund. Appalling customer service.

Just awful ! service unfriendly almost rude. Teriyaki beef and vegetable , at £16.50 was a bit of burnt steak on a bed of cold bean sprouts . Chicken on skewer was all chicken skin and fat . horrible experience

The soft shell crab, that i love, still came with the same chilliesque dipping sauce it used to (some years ago). Still food is very nice but resolving this issue would make the rating for me "excellent".

The katsu curry was amazing and came with a delicious small salad on the side. It would be amazing to know the source of the fish next time. Great independent restaurant. Will definitely return when I'm in Epsom next!

This is the first time we have eaten here & it won’t be our last. It was our first time in a Japanese restaurant so we weren’t adventurous with our food choices. The food was excellent, freshly cooked & nicely presented. We didn’t try the sushi, but I could have sat in there all evening watching the different plates of sushi being brought out - they looked amazing. It’s a hidden gem just off the high street in a town overrun with big chain restaurants & coffee shops.

This is my favourite place to eat. Love the miso soup , salmon bento box and sushi is lovely. Friendly stuff and very clean. Deffo worth a visit

Delightful Japanese restaurant in Epsom. Great sushi and friendly service.

We decided to go for an evening meal here. We arrived well in time and found the place full. However a nice waiter offered us seating upstairs. Upstairs was dark and empty. We took a table by the window and 10 min later someone bothered to turn on the lights. The order was taken quickly but that's pretty much where the good part stopped. After waiting more than 40 minutes we received a plate of Spyder sushi roll. We were offered wasabi and ginger, but despite our enthusiasm to accept the offer, it never materialised. 5 minutes later a plate of hot prawn katsu curry arrived. Quite unassuming to be honest. 3 tempura battered prawns on a tiny bed of rice with some chippy looking curry sauce splattered on it. And a sad 3 cm3 leafy salad. My order of tempura udon was still away. When it arrived, I was asked if I take my soup with chopsticks or spoon. Because it is normal to eat liquids with sticks here. However the waiter (and that was the only positive on this meal) brought fast a spoon. The broth was tasteless and not seasoned at all. Tempura veggies were 1 slice of carrot and 1 slice of potato. It is sad to think that this is what the great Japanese culture is reduced to in one of the nicest town in England (that's Epsom for the uninitiated). Short to say, we won't be returning any time soon.

Used to have my lunch there for years, but this time, only one table and we ask for vegetarian twick in making sushi and tempura. The chef was not interested in accommodating our need. Would love them to improve their service. Their food is good but the chef was just not in a mood. Get my teriyaki chicken mixed up with chicken katsu in Bento set. How could they do that only one table customer?

The food is very good and wonderful mixtures of flavours But the owner keeps the tip that is directly added on to the bill to “pay the staff” . This is a scum like practice. Make sure you directly pay staff in cash any tips. Owner should be shamed for such poor treatment of staff.
