Main Street Fisheries in Allerdale

Went to night for tea 4.30 Very disappointed Chips looked like they where left over from Dinner very chewey Fish was the same. Might give it a miss

Terrible fish,overcooked,greasy,and despite asking for trays,wrapped in paper which soaked up the oil and fish stick to it. Will not go back despite using them for a long time when up at caravan.

Came here on a Friday night for fish and chips. Had to wait outside whilst my order was being prepared, which was fine. Weirdly though people were going in , ordering and then leaving with their food straight away which was odd. They definately hadn't ordered previously as I could hear them ordering at the counter. There didn't seem to be any order in which peoples food was coming out. I had to wait ages for my food considering I only ordered one fish and chips. I guess they must have cooked it to order which should have been good. Unfortunately when I got it home the fish was rubbish. There was one small thick bit and the rest was the thinest sliver of fish, which had gone dry, over cooked and was inedible. I was really disapointed as i'd waited ages and paid a bit of money for that fish. I couldn't go back with it as it was getting late and I couldn't take my child back out as it was her bedtime. The chips however were nice. I decided to phone them and just mention the issue so that they could check any of the other fish before they went out, save any other customers getting the same. The guy on the phone started off apologetic and said I could come back with it for a replacement which I appreciated, but I explained that I couldn't, I just wanted them to be aware so they could check the other fish. I was happy with them even offering a replacement (even though I couldn't accept it) but unfortunately he then ruined it when he then started making excuses and decided to blame it on it being busy that day and it was manic. If they didn't have quality bits of fish left then they should have closed for the evening rather than selling dried up inedible bits.

Called here on the way back from Buttermere .We had 3 Haddocks 3 portions of chips 3 curry sauces and 1 peas .Food looked good and everything was so tasty-one of the best 5*

We can only presume as we visited at midday, that we were given reheated chips from last night . I have never had to throw chip shop chips in the bin before but these were absolutely disgusting. Could be compared to chewing cardboard.

We live locally and this was always our local chippie. The prices have increased and the food is not as good as it was. We now go to the Chinese across the road which is a lot better

So so so slow….. Food is good but not sure it’s worth the wait. I think they should stop taking phone orders if they can’t cope with the orders coming in off the street as well… hopeless. It’s only a Tuesday night. God help them on a Friday/Saturday. Not coming back.

Travelling to an open water swim at Derwent Lake, called for a energy tea. The food was amazing and the staff were lovely and friendly. We wish this was our local chippy as we would go every week. Thank you so much.

Visited on a Saturday evening and was told to wait outside whilst food being prepared - normally this is a great sign as the fish and chips is being freshly prepared/turnover is high etc. Nope, not here though. The wait is because the staff are incredibly slow! After waiting 15min our food was ready. Drove back to our holiday cottage (5min) and discovered that the food (fish, chips and sausage in batter) were all COLD and looked like thy had been cooked in engine oil (dark and flavourless). Would never visit again, even if starving!

I've visited this chip shop many a time and always had an ok meal but this time was something else. I ordered the sausage meal deal but kept having to prompt them as to what went in it. It was advertised as sausage, chips, sauce and drink. They just tried to give me sausage and chips. I had to ask for the drink and they just looked at me like I was an idiot. When I got home, they hadn't put any sauce in either. The food was salty and tasted like it had been cooked in old fat and then just been warmed up, it wasn't fresh. I went in the middle of service to so I can't understand it.

Had to wait over 30 minutes to be served, then another 20 minutes for the food. When we got home the cod was nowhere to be seen, just a load of batter and a poor excuse for a bit of cod. Chips were OK and the mushy peas had a funny smell. What an absolute disappointment. Waist of money. We had over a 7 hour driving to get there and we're so exhausted and just wanted something nice to eat and got batter and chips, poor start to our holiday.

We stopped by chance and just before closing on a Friday evening (sorry) This was not a problem for the staff as they still happily served us and even cooked the halloumi fries that were not on the menu on a Friday night. These were amazing and best fish and chips around.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. I think this is the only place in Cockermouth so I would say be prepared to queue, but it's not a long wait and the food is fresh and hot. Will be back next time I am in the area.

We were in Cockermouth for a week and there was regularly a queue ouside this fish and chip shop when we passed by - always a good sign. Portions were substantial and the fish was excellent. The chips could have been better though.

A nice fish and chip shops. Homemade steak pie is 10/10. Friendly staff. Chips are also very good. In a good location on the main street of Cockermouth.

We were staying in Bridekirk and wanted a Friday fish & chip night, we are 300 miles from home and obviously do not know the shops in this area, well after looking around we chose Main Street Fisheries & boy what a find, the service and smiling chatty staff made it and the Cod & Chips & my Haddock & Chips were made to perfection, light batter and white fish tasted fantastic, please please give this establishment a try you will not be disappointed. Thank you guys for the great chat and service and wish you all the best for the future, from us Essex people.

Great fish and chip takeaway one of the best, freshly cooked, nice people. Easy to find in the Main Street plent of places to park

Everything about this chippie was great, except the most important thing. The 2 pieces of fish we had were both tough. Along with dark very crispy batter, I felt that the fish was badly overcooked, or had been cooked twice to reheat it. Since other reviews are mainly positive, I'd like to think that this was a rare occurrence.

Order the Pattie. It was honestly the tastiest thing I've ever had. The staff recommended it, and it was lovely.

Friendly lady and her daughter (I think). Chips were fine as was the chicken quarter, however the 2 x battered sausages seemed as though they had been sitting for a while or over cooked. Batter scraps are a naughty favourite, which these guys had.Would try again if ever passing.

Lovely staff, following all covid guidelines, nice wee bistro seating outside for anyone waiting for a special order and boy, is it worth the wait. Perfectly cooked meaty fish and the crispiest batter. Highly recommended!

A popular chip shop and very busy, which is a good thing. The curry sauce is lovely decent chips. Found the fish was really thin though, no proper flakes.

First visit and will not be my last. Lovely chips and battered sausages were lovely. The batter was crispy and tasty. Also premises observed COVID guidelines. Will be back later in the week.

Always get a great meal at Main Street Fisheries. We have been going for years and it is definitely the best in Cockermouth. Crisp batter surrounds perfectly cooked fish - not greasy at all. The Cumberland Sausage is also phenomenal.

My wife and I had fish &chips n of course mushy peas, absolutely beautiful...would deffo return in August

When the other takeaway lines are too busy or you want something more reasonably priced then fish and chips is the way forward and this is a pretty good one as all the family have their favourites

The best fish and chips in Cockermouth!! The portions are substantial and the food is always perfect. The chips are great.We regularly order fish and chips, two sausages and large chips, with two pots of curry sauce and two diet cokes and its usually under £14.We ordered with some friends this month who are from down south, and they said they were the best fish and chips they have ever had.You can preorder over the phone and collection is all covid friendly.

Precioso pescado y patatas fritas. La hija disfrutó de su salchicha gigante y papas fritas también.Cola larga debido a la popularidad y las restricciones de Covid también. Estaban bien organizados, pero me alegré de que no lloviera.Tienen dos colas: una para las visitas sin cita previa (como nosotros) y otra para las colecciones de pedidos por teléfono. Este último fue mucho más rápido. Si lo hubiera sabido, habría tomado esa opción y lo haré si comiéramos desde allí nuevamente en este viaje.¡Gracias!

Paramos alrededor de las 4:30 pm un jueves por la tarde. La tienda estaba vacía, pero había habido una pequeña cola cuando pasamos unos minutos antes, aunque un poco más de lo "normal" debido a las medidas de distanciamiento social actualmente vigentes. Me intrigaron los haggis maltrechos y la morcilla y, pensándolo bien, tal vez debería haber probado eso en lugar del eglefino.Mi impresión fue que el trozo de eglefino que me sirvieron había sido cocinado y mantenido caliente durante “algún tiempo”. De acuerdo, esto hizo que la masa estuviera crujiente (personalmente odio la masa empapada en algunos lugares), pero el pescado estaba tan seco como se podía conseguir. Quizás solo tuve mala suerte. Si lo hubieran preparado a pedido, podría haber sido mejor. Las patatas fritas estaban bien, pero los guisantes blandos eran abundantes y sabrosos.No estoy seguro de si volvería a ir a Main Street Fisheries, aunque el personal fue amable y cordial. Sin embargo, una cosa que me llevaré es asegurarme de ver la cantidad de pescado precocido y lo ocupada que está la tienda antes de “celebrar” mi buena suerte al no tener que hacer cola.

£4.35 for Patty & Chips. The chips very awful, dry and well overpriced, the patty wasn't much better either. I have had food from here before and it's been fine, but not again.

The steak pie is the best! So full of meat and the Pastry is perfect. A generous Portion of fresh chips. The Staff are lovely and friendly x

Eran alrededor de las 4. 10 pm solo ha estado abierto 10 minutos. así que entrar por una porción de chips me costó 2. 25) mi esposa me dijo que las papas eran de color marrón o negruzco, así que las conseguí. llegó a casa en una de las fincas locales en Cockermouth. abrí el paquete, ten en cuenta que la tienda de pescado se estaba abriendo. Recibió 5 golpes de mi vida. El aspecto más desagradable que he probado fue directamente al único lugar donde estaban. Nunca volveré a esa tienda de pescado. No fue la primera vez que preparé mi comida desde allí. He puesto una foto para que pueda ver. No era apto para el consumo humano.

Fabulous grub! This must be my 20th visit.all perfect in every way. Also fresh cooked request cumberland sausage pattie. On your bucket list ir should be. 😁😁😁😁😞👍👍👍

Had the fish and chips last week fish was dry and the batter wasn't much better 5 of us had it and it was all the same a real disappointment the quality needs improving

Tried the Cumberland sausage pattie. Was lovely. I always used to batch cook as I work odd hours so a visit to the chippy was maybe once a month..... am here twice week! Great quality, great quality and nicely staff. See you soon.

Got chicken n chips and fish n chips for our tea, it's was absolutely gorgeous, lovely golden crispy batter on the fish, chips were bloody lovely and the otherhalf and the dog said the chicken was scrummy. Staff and service absolutely spot on. Definitely be back five star

Excellent produce and knowledgeable fishmongeress also sells speciality foods such as salmon, sardine and mackerel rillettes and curry sauce mixes mad by two guys fron the Indian quarter in Bradford.

Surprised at previous comment about how bad fish and chips were. If I had read the review would not have gone anywhere near. Lovely smell on an August day. Lovely cooked fish and chips, enjoyed in the sunshine in cockermouth. Best fish and chips I have had in a long time large fish with a large portion of chips, eating outside and it was not raining. One of lifes luxuries. Couple of small tables outside to sit on.

The fish was over grossly overcooked with the batter extremely hard not light and crispy as it should be. Had to scoop out the fish from the batter casing. The chips were soggy and stuck together but reasonably enjoyable. Would not visit again.

Just called in,to get a sausage and a patty, more or less cooked to order, but still not to long a wait, it was nice to get some batter bits, as well. A nice bonus and free.

Visited tonight for fish and chips take away. The fish and chips were freshly cooked, excellent value for money and the portions were huge. Highly recommend this for your fish tea.

Somos de West Sussex y visitamos amigos en la ciudad y visitamos esta tienda de chips justo antes de que se cerraran, pero sí nos sirvieron y cocinaron pescado fresco, morcilla negra en la masa y su salchicha ahumada, Julie, quien cocinó la comida fue excelente y tomó un Muchas bromas de nosotros, pero ambas chicas eran geniales y toda la comida que compramos y comimos en casa fue grandiosa

Bought fish and chips twice, took home for consumption, the fish was anorexic and the batter obese and dark in colour as if fried in fat which was too hot, the fish also had a distinct stale feel and taste to it. The chips were certainly not fried on the day of sale, tough dry chewy and again stale.I spent in excess of twelve pounds on this "meal", I shall not make the same mistake twice.

Have been here a few times this year have had three times awful either hard over cooked and today raw be careful absolutely awful greasy n not cooked properly

Best fish and chips I've had in a while. Sat and ate the meal looking out over one of the best views you could get, we were by the Derwent and Cocker met. Friendly staff as well.

Tried some fish and chips whilst visiting the area last week. A bit disappointed that the batter was quite soggy, however the fish - haddock - was very nice, as were the chips and curry sauce. Average prices.

Was a big queue here last year so went Lee's across road and what a mistake that was. Waited this time and well worth it! Probably the best fish, chips & peas it had this year.

This is our local F&C; shop and it is very good. Not the easiest place to park of an evening, but great fish n chips and other eats.

Chips poor and very small portions. I paid extra for a large portion of chips, the customer after me only asked for chips ,paid less but received more! I eve n asked if I had received a large portion, oh yes, was furious until I started eating them then I was pleased there weren't many as they were terrible. Never again.

We had a piece of Haddock each, which was beautiful, full of flavour and with a good crunchy batter. Still ravenous, so tucked into a steak & kidney pie that had plenty of good chunks of meat, a tasty gravy and gorgeous pastry. We then also shared a very meaty Cumberland sausage. All the food was awesome and the staff were very friendly. Very impressed and cant wait for an empty stomach to return for more.

A quick meal needed and fish and chips fitted the bill. This fish and chip shop serves very tasty chips and the portion size is just right, no waste. Great fish, lovely crispy batter. 1st choice for me when in Cockermouth.

On holiday here - cane for fish and chips - great menu - had 2 haddock, 1 chips £9.60. Chip portion rather small but the haddock - sublime! Beautiful fish, amazing batter and such lovely ladies serving. A real find - will be back but will have 2 portions of chips.

This small chippy is very popular with locals and tourists, a good selection of food particularly the large sausages which are a meal in themselves, great chips which were perfectly cooked.

The best chip shop in cockermouth and you need to travel some distance to find better - or should that be batter?Everything you expect in a chippy and all served with a smile.Not greasy and none of zose soggy chips!

Firstly the staff were so friendly , shop was clean and brightly lit . We had a large cod each and a portion of chips between us which was plenty . Both were delicious , the fish was cooked to perfection and covered in crispy batter , golden chips big and chunky .

Nothing better than your local chippy! Comes fully equipped with the little table, incase you wanna sit and watch the world pass by. Very nice fish, and the BEST curry sauce!

I can honestly say that these are the best fish and chips I have had in years!Divine fish batter light and crispy freshly cooked value for money and the staff lovely

.. and conveniently positioned.. easy to find.I believe it consistantly wins a 'best chippie' award from local kids.. well don't let that put you off - it doesn't mean chips are served in kiddie orientated boxes etc. Just avoid certain times of the day to avoid the crush, and adults will get decent quality chips etc at reasonable price.

We had to collect something nearby and as it was a nice sunny afternoon we went for chips. Friendly staff, nice hot fresh chips. Not very big inside so I wouldn't like to he there on a busy day. Had a wander back down the main street over the bridge, sat watching the world go by. :-)

This is a good old fashioned fish and chip shop which we regularly use. The fish ( cod and haddock) is always of a good quality and the chips are pretty good.Always served by a friendly member of staff which is a real bonus.I only wish more fish, plaice, Huss and skate were available on the menu.Take away only ( however there is a small table outside if you want to eat your chips and watch the world go by!)

Always fantastic! Get a takeaway every month or so and it has never disappointed.Only complaint is it makes me want more!
