Mai Sushi in Camden

Picture three men slightly tipsy and with an unquenchable desire for sushi. Mai Sushi was the first place on the list in the area and my god did it serve us well. We went for the largest sushi boat, which we were warned was much more than necessary for our size of party - but we overcame all barriers and beat it. It was delicious, and we also polished off a fair amount of sake... The three men have since sobered up, but much is still spoken about that sushi boat (and it is a literal boat).

Yesterday, my husband brought chicken and egg fried rice to me. It didn’t have too many ingredients. It didn’t add cabbage but mushrooms, but it tasted very Taiwanese and homely. The miso soup was relatively small and not recommended. Today we We went directly to the restaurant to eat. We ordered Selection A for sushi. The sashimi was very fresh and delicious and the vinegar rice was solid enough. For the main dish, we ordered a piece of teriyaki tuna and a piece of salt-grilled yellowtail, which also came with a lettuce salad. Japanese style sauce, white rice has distinct grains but not too dry, and the texture is just right. The important thing is that the store does not use Thai fragrant rice or Indian long rice because it is in the UK. I guess it should be Penglai rice? It really makes you feel like you are back home when you eat it. It is recommended for tourists or travelers from East Asia.

The crispy tuna rolls must be one of the best things I’ve ever had in my life

I’ve tried the Mai Sushi in Kensington High Street, as it has a take away inside M&S, and the sushi was amazing, similar level to the Sushi Shop in Bayswater! Delicious!!

Despite the uninviting external appearance, inside there is a familiar atmosphere...few dishes but very well prepared and freshly prepared...friendly staff and clean place...highly recommended

Really lovely little find, not too far from Euston. It's sometimes hard to find reasonably-priced independent places that aren't bland stuff like Itsu or other chains. Loved the bento box and the softshell crab in particular. Service was polite and discreet.

Great service, amazing tasting sushi.

This is a bit of an oasis; a stone's throw from Euston and St Pancras stations. Great welcome and fabulous food. This is simple, delicious food, served well. I could have spent the whole evening just eating my way through the starters and small plates. Terrific value too!

Food was fine, but small portions. House wine an absolute rip-off at £7 for a small glass.

This doesn't seem like a Japanese restaurant you would see in London where everything has to be modern and flashy, this is the real deal, the traditional feel of a proper Japanese restaurant. (I’m not sure if the owner is Japanese or not but they did a good job, really made me feel at home) The food was great and everything came so fast and looked so good. About the service, there was this one time I came in and needed to order something in advance for my friend because she was quite hungry and still on her way there, the waitress took my order right away and the food came out so fast!

Been going there for years and never been disappointed. Bookings needed most of the time because they are this good.

Don't be fooled by the external appearance because this place absolutely represents a valid solution if you are looking for Japanese cuisine in London. Good menu, excellent quality and very friendly staff, absolutely recommended

Food not tasty and seems like China style cooking instead of Japanese. This is a restaurant own and run by mainland Chinese. That’s why the food is not real Japanese style food.

This restaurant doesn't look attractive from the outside. Inside, the green paint on the walls looks like a green background for video editing. But dare to enter this restaurant. The menu is extensive and the food is excellent. The service too. Little discovery of the day.

The baked eggplant is amazing. Din katsu was excellent.

Délicieux sushi, gentil accueil familial. Le service était très rapide et un choix raisonnable sur la carte. Nous avons commandé différents sushis et makis, ainsi que des entrées (gyoza, crevettes entourée de petites nouilles). Nous avons appréciés la fraîcheur du poisson ainsi que les sushis ayant de l’asperge à l’intérieur. Un grand merci :-)

I’ve been here 3 times now. Its 5 mins walk from kings cross station. The food is consistent , delicious & authentic, one of the better japanese restaurants I’ve tried in London. Their sushi boat is heaven! My fav is the inside out tuna asparagus one, miso eggplant, scallop mornay & agedashi tofu. It’s a family run business, the staff are lovely and always welcoming. Recommend if you’re in London and looking for a Japanese fix!

Definitely had better sushi and sake. The roll was not well rolled and was falling apart. The Sashimi did not taste very fresh.

Amazing sushi! We walked in with no reservation on valentines day and were seated quickly. The restaurant is small and busy but everything we had was great.

I've been coming for 9 years now, Always ordering my favorites dishes which are delicious ! Kaitaifi prawns and crunchy salmon rolls. Always delicious ans I've never been sick despite some commentaries mentioning hygiene issues, are those people jealous ? Will go again and again. Kids can eat rice, salmon and edamame. My 2,5 years old son was happy with it.

Nice find less than 10 min walk from Kings X station. Not a fancy place but very good sushi. I had the chefs sushi/sashimi selection. A block of the Main Street but well away from the big crowds. I’ll come back here!

Unassuming from the outside but definitely worth poking a head in. We had a mixture of dishes and all were delicious. Staff were friendly and atmosphere nice. Would recommend.

A hidden Gem of a Japanese restaurant just a few minutes walk from Euston Station. My partner and I had the Mai special rolls to start and the teriyaki Salmon (2 fillets) and chicken bento box for mains. Both were very tasty and the sushi was very fresh with lots of flavour. Highly reccommended.

Decided give this place a try. Food was actually pretty good especially the sushi which was fresh. Soya sauce was a little salty as mentioned by other reviewers. Had the fried starter selection but not sure that was worth the price though it tasted good. Overall a pretty good sushi place in the area and would definitely come again.

Don't let the somewhat simple and quiet appearance of the restaurant fool you, this place has the most amazing sushi at very affordable prices. Generous sized portions and very friendly, helpful and quick service. The crunchy seabass roll is the best sushi we've ever had. From now we'll never miss this place when we're in London.

Decent Japanese food, open till 10pm. If you are staying at nearby hotels and craving for Asian food.

We had the smallest of the sushi boats and we were able to polish it off between the two of us. The flavour didn’t quite match the presentation but it was still decent quality sushi and I appreciate how they let us swap out one sushi roll in the set for another that we preferred. They also had a selection of bento boxes on the menu which looked really good and I would be keen to visit again to try.

The sushi boat 1 is fairly large with 60 pieces including Sashimi. The fried items are hot and very well done. The soy sauce is rather salty and strong flavored. Sake tend to come in the 300 ml bottle which is nice for smaller group sizes.

Just a short walk from Kings Cross down a quiet side street you will find this gem of a place. The Sushi was fresh, delicious, and light. Service was fast and friendly! Try the rock shrimp starter!

A family run restaurant, small but cosy. I had the box that came with miso soup, pickles, salad, sashimi, nigiri and one roll. The fish is fresh, the portion is good and the flavors are well balanced. I came here on Wednesday around 8pm, and the restaurant was almost full. Two things to improve: 1. Cut maki equally, otherwise it looks sloppy 2. Service wasn't bad but it can be better. I closed the menu to indicate I was ready but took a few minutes for someone to notice that. No one checked with me on the food, that's just standard practice.

Great place! We tried the tempura, sushi bento box and the sushi mix (think it was the Mai combo). Blown away by how delicious and fresh the sashimi tasted - the fish melted in our mouths! Not an easy achievement to find such fresh fish in London. We also enjoyed some ice cream for dessert - sesame flavour and a tempura fried ice cream, both delicious. Oh, and the big jug of hot sake felt like a bargain - 250 ml for £7! Portions weren't very big overall but as expected with the cost of living crisis. Service was friendly and the place is clean. Would recommend to others and I'd consider coming back specifically for the sashimi.

Totally worth the hype! A friend has been here several times so walked us through what to expect - no frills vibes, NY Chinatown local feel. The wine is not great & we were told the staff are quite short with you but they were really nice to us and super fast! We started with edame & lightly fried tofu, which was divine & I could have had the whole portion to myself. We got pickles on the side, which were also delicious, fresh and crisp with great flavour. We got sushi boat #4, and despite the look it's honestly fantastic grade sushi for the price point. 100% recommend for great sushi & chill vibes with a close friend or two.

Ok so this little place is very unassuming, not fancy in any way, and located down a random street between Euston Station and King's Cross. It happened to be close to our hotel and to tell you the truth, we were nervous to try because there were hardly any customers when we went in and the outside is quite dated. BUT the sushi was amazing, service was amazing, staff was so friendly, it was nice and clean, and most importantly- it was air conditioned! So don't be afraid to try something off the beaten path because we found this amazing little gem.

My family go to Mai Sushi very often and have never been disappointed. The whole atmosphere in the restaurant is great and food is delicious. Staff: Lovely staff with great attitude. They are always willing to recommend dishes and are patient when waiting for your order. Food : The food is always delicious and doesn't take long to get to us. The sushi is made when you order so it is very fresh when it gets to you. Everything about dinner at Mai Sushi is amazing and it is surprising to see so many negative reviews as I have never had a problem when I eat here.

What a little gem of a place! We enjoyed everything about our experience last night. All the fish is so fresh and there is such a variety to choose from. The black sesame ice cream was to die for! We are definitely coming back

I really like this little family-run place on a Euston side street. Good food, friendly fast service, and relaxed atmosphere. This is definitely going to become one of my local go tos.

My wife and I had dinner here on a Saturday evening. We were seated immediately. The service was efficient and friendly and the maki were excellent, as were the shrimp tempura and vegetable spring rolls.

Authentic japanese restaurant with great selection of sushi and hot dishes. We had the bento boxes which are an excellent deal for the amount of food and variety you get. Highlights were the Nigir, Sashimi, and the Tempura. Highly recommended.

I really liked this place not sure why it's less than 4.5 stars. A lot of people, crowded but very comfortable with polite and fast staff. Sushi were great, while sauce for me was too salty. Highly recommend.

I nice place to eat fresh sushi and Japanese food for a good price. The only issue is communication with staff. Some may not be very good in English. Reservation is only possible by calling or emailing which is not ideal.

Excellent food and service. The surrounding area is unfortunately bad; I would recommend eating inside as you may be approached by people trying to steal from you.

Had a very pleasant dinner at Mai Sushi. The sushi, rolls and sashimi were fresh and tasted great. The aubergine starter was very good. The service was very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was relaxed and buzzy. I would definately go back.

Review rating should be around 3.5 - 3.8. Next time? Don’t think so ;)

Came here for dinner with a friend after work and it was basically empty when we arrived at 6pm. We ordered the sushi bento box and the tempura box which both came with miso soup. They were served to us very quickly so we didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes. Sashimi was fresh and delicious, and the softness of the sushi rice was good but it could be improved to be even softer. Sashimi pieces could have been bigger as you can probably tell from my photos the size of each sashimi slice was rather small. On the up side I was slightly surprised by the pickled vegetables in the middle, not sure if they made them in house but they were very flavourful and balanced out nicely with the sashimi. Service was good and vibes overall were pleasant. Would be happy to come back here again but wouldn't say it's a particularly outstanding place.

Good sushi place next to Euston and St Pancras. The sushis are good and relatively modestly priced. The atmosphere and decoration could be improved, no effort whatsoever has been put in by the owner. The staff is friendly.

Small independent restaurant. We’ve been there a few times and the sushi has always been excellent.

Fishes and scallops are fresh, however the nigiri rice is a bit loose.

Very authentic restaurant and tasty sushi. They have lots of different rolls, and the fish was very fresh. The ratio of fish to rice was perfect. Some places fill you up with rice! This place was great, very fairly priced, and the staff were friendly and very efficient.

This is probably the best sushi you can find. The place is nothing special and I would probably not have entered to try if it was not highly recommended. But then the sushi was really great and the price on lower side made this The place where I go to eat sushi....fantastic. so do not get fooled by the first impression (actually I think it's closed for renovation at the moment)

I have been going here for years and the service and food has always been consistently great. It is a no frills restaurant so you don't pay over the top prices for the food but the quality and taste takes priority and it shows.

I ordered shrimp tempura udon and edamame. Edamame was a bit dry, making it difficult to eat. The tempura was already absorving much of the soup and i could not enjoy it. I recommend serving the tempura on the side of the udkn and let clients mix as they wish. The staff was quick at accepting that my dog is an assistance dog and I was glad that I did not have to argue nor explajn, this is the standard inclusion that we, assistance dog owners expect, so my congratulations to the staff for bejng well up to date with uk law regarding assistance dogs. Regardjng the ambience, I liked that i was able to talk with my friends and that there was no loud kusic and the aciustics of the place did not amplify the conversations of other people. We site jn the corner by the window.

Salimos con hambre. Muy caro para la calidad que ofrece. Las gyozas no tenían mucho sabor. El Kaitaifi prawn eran unas gambas rebozadas sin más. La sopa de miso estaba buena. De los rolls el que nos gustó fue el de anguila.

This has been my absolute favourite Sushi restaurant for a few years now - the sushi is always super fresh (I especially recommend the nigiri and the rainbow rolls) and really reasonably priced for the quality and portion sizes
