Maguires in Gateshead

This is our local and has been inconsistent for decades now. It seemed to hit a sweet spot about a year ago - a bit expensive but everything well cooked. Went last week - good portion of chips but pale and the fish was thin and overcooked. Pretty much £18 wasted :-/

Outstanding fish and chips. East in the region for taste and price. Good size portions, friendly staff, great flavour. Definitely our go to for whenever we want fish and chips.

Our ‘go to’ take away chip shop with simply the best fish and chips for miles. Always quick service and reasonable prices too. I honestly can’t understand the negative reviews - we absolutely love Maguires Rowlands Gill!

Much better experience than some recent reviews led me to expect. Good sized helpings of chips (too much for me!) - chips not soggy, and tasty fish (we had one regular fish and one portion of fish bites). Just what we needed after cycling 21 miles! Would go again if passing that way. I noticed they also offered gluten-free fish & chips on request.

The staff do not know how to serve the right portion size never is right. Ask for large chips ... you get a small portion this is every time. Also the fish is gross . Slimey and not fresh at all. Also the battered sausages are undercooked and batter on the sausage tasted like old oil also the prices are outrageous! The staff stand there on the mobile phones then served foods straight after they handle the dirty phones so on. The staff are uninviting Also very dirty looking absolutely no personal hygiene in the man that works there and the 2 lady's who are rude and ill mannered. Not to mention the shop is dirty and leaves the sack of potatoes near the door while they smoke the cigarettes on and sit on the potatoe bags! I'm not the only one who noticed this. AVOID!!!!!!

Very very average fish and chips, lukewarm and greasy, polystyrene boxes, service indifferent, poor value and not worth checking out.

We have fish n chips every Friday and most times they’re delicious - but today the fish was tasteless and batter soggy - and the chips were not cooked!! Come on guys, get it together! We’re choosing to spend our well earned money here so get it right!

I have reviewed displays before and given it five stars. The fish and chips are still good although running out of fish at 7 o'clock on a Friday night didn't really impress. The biggest complaint is the policy of getting rid of bottles of vinegar and using a garden spray to apply a mist of vinegar to be wafted over the top fish and chips. This is not how traditional fish and chips should be served. It is cheapskate and unacceptable. The mist spray is also caused quite a stir in the local Facebook sites. If the policy isn't changed it will damage their business. That would be a shame.

Went in for fish bites, no fish bites. Ordered chips with batter, no batter. Ordered a sausage which was paid for to find out there wasn’t one when we got home. Disappointed.

Not often we get to pass here, but always had lovely food. A really nice chippy, our order varies but I usually always ask for the mild curry sauce which is a favourite side. Chips are really good as expected.

Ordered a Sunday dinner for 1pm today ..was just like a home made one ... roast beef with all the trimmings ..fabulously cooked Meat was tender ..Yorkshire pud yummy... gravy was lovely ... and def enough for 2 meals ... staff were very friendly and helpful .. had a good chatter... service with a smile ... see pics of my lunch ..well impressed will definitely go back .. got another plate full for tomorro too .. mmm ... go try n im sure u ll be back . I will .. 200%.

The Sunday Lunch is amazing. Meat is delicious and vegetables are cooked to perfection. Such a large portion We managed 2 meals from it. Absolutely outstanding value for money. I don’t think I will ever cook Sunday lunch again!

Ordered 3 dinners yesterday wow what can I say 2 beef 1 lamb, beef was delicious just melted in your mouth, the veg was cooked to perfection although was way to much the dog got some of that lol , my dad got the lamb and said was one of nicest lamb dinners hes ever had will definitely be back next week amazing food at a very reasonable price.

Having tried these for last few weeks absolutely fantastic value for money I don't even bother cooking my own anymore. Wife and I get 1 to share as the are that big Big thanks to James and alison definitely a weekly thing for us Welcome recommended

We ordered beef Sunday dinner. The beef did not look too appetising and wasn’t, chewy, fatty and gristly! Vegetables looked good but were flavourless! Both my husband and son found hairs in their separate meals! Don’t eat the Sunday dinners.unfortunately three Sunday dinners went into the bin.

After not eating fish & chips for over one year I was looking forward to this visit, and wasn't disappointed! A great fish & chip shop with good service, and friendly staff!

Out of Cod bites, so ordered small battered fish & chips , cash under£5 , card over £5. Excellent value and beautiful food. 'twas as good as last year when i called. Glenn from Carlisle. I will return
