Now I like traditional fish & chips along with the rest of us, but these days you have to look far and wide for crispy chips and batter that isn't greasyLocated in New Cross in a pretty run down row of shops just around the corner from New Cross Station, there is the start of a culinary enclave. The London Particular - an esoteric coffee place and its sister LP Bar are there and then enter Maddy's with her modern take on Fish & Chips. There were a lot of us so we did have most of the menu and tried each others (whether allowed to or not)Cod in dill flavoured batter, lovely tasty chips, homemade tartare sauce and slaw, tempura vegetables, Fish fingers (not yer Birds Eye pap, proper fillet, and made on the premises) on a brioche roll - mmm -my waistline was groaning. Local beer, a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc all served in modern bright premises, this was different.Prices? We are all used to paying a bit less for Fish & Chips to carry home in paper, but I believe you get what you pay for. Do you want fish that has been deep frozen and gone through many warehouses and freezers, or do you want to pay around a pound more for fish that is fresh, and according to their blurb, responsibly sourced? The difference is in the taste and the meatiness of the fish and Maddy's cod is getting on to Craws Nest standard - (that is the pinnacle of battered cod, but you do have to go to Scotland for it...)After a few drinks and on the way home with cash short, the battered sausage (did you know they cost 3p?) and soggy chips has its appeal. If you want to have a lovely lunch or tea, Maddy's is the placeYes you could call them hipsters, but what does that really mean and why is it derogatory? Somebody who is trying to put a different slant on our favourite food, working hard, bringing a bit of life to a part of London that needs some economic growth - if that is a hipster, I'm all for them.Get off the train, call into Maddy's get yourself mussels and chips - around £9 and it will feed two of you - perfect Friday night habit to get into. I'm off for a re-visit, but I'm keeping my choice to myself this time

At £9 a portion I hoped for something special but I was disappointed. The cod was tasteless, really no taste at all. The batter had dill in it, very cheffy, but only tasted of the cooking oil. There is usually more to coleslaw than wilted white cabbage, but not here. The coleslaw didn't even have mayo in it, it was just old cabbage. I'm glad I was told the sauce was tartar because I would have never guessed, and at £1.50 for a desert spoon full it made the fish seem like a bargain. The chips were ok but I hope you like them salty, as you have no choice. I think it may have been a good thing that the portion was so small. I should have heeded the warning sign that they sell fish finger sandwiches. To summarise, hipsters playing with their daddies trust funds, not a place to eat.

Recently I was visiting friends who live in the area and they took me here to eat. I am so glad that they did! Maddy's Fish Bar is a small and trendy restaurant that supplies quality fish and chips! Not your average cheap and greasy fish and chips! The fish is well prepared and tastes amazing! The batter is also light and crispy which was a refreshing change. A must try are the delicious chicken nuggets! A really relaxed and trendy vibe when dining in so I will definitely be visiting again and recommending to friends.

I had the most amazing Fish and chips dinner at Maddy's. I loved the trendy style and vibe in the restaurant and the special's have always been different and soooooo delicious both times I have eaten there. This restaurant certainly isn't your run of the meal chippy and it is most definitely worth spending the extra money for the fresh and local produce they use. I absolutely can't wait for Maddy's to re-open after the Christmas break so I can visit again. I would definitely highly recommend this restaurant.

Poor. Expensive as, tiny portions and rude staff. You pay a massive £9 (!!!!) for a portion that is smaller than a mini fish and chips anywhere else. Chips are crap, they are fried with the salt on so come too salty. Fish is fried with the skin on?!? Traditional 'Slaw' is disgusting; cabbage that looks days old just plonked on your plate to make the portion size look bigger. Staff were despondent when asked about the menu. Overall this is the most expensive, worst fish and chips I've ever had. DO NOT go here unless you want to throw your dinner in the bin and your money down the drain...

Several friends recommended Maddy's and they were spot on. Modern twist on the traditional fish and chips, delicious battered or breaded fish plus options including tempura, mussels, cuttlefish. I usually dislike mushy peas but these were amazing. Cosy, compact inside but they also do takeway meals using great paper/card recyclable containers. Staff friendly and efficient. We drove several miles to go and it was worth battling the London traffic!

Food was DELICIOUS, best cod Ive ever eaten, nice unusual chips, tasty slaw. The place is modest furnished but cozy. In my 4 years of living in SE14, I've heard all about the 'gentrification of New Cross'. Is it really the new Shoreditch / Hoxton / Peckham? This place thrives off that idea, even if it isn't quite a reality yet. Decent fish and chips has been hard to come by in the area for a little while (though Brockley Rock and Camberwell's Flying Fish are both excellent), and this is some of the best I've ever eaten. The fish is probably as good as you'd get on the coast, the chips are awesome and there's plenty of homemade mushy peas and curry sauce on the side. I love the London Particular, so it was fantastic to see this place open recently - and seemingly it's doing really well. The only thing I would slightly moan about is the price… it's not really a fast food joint and the prices reflect that. Paying a few extra quid for sauces is a bit much, but hey - everything tastes so good, I'm not complaining really. Top tip? Visit LP Bar after and wash it all down with a 'Wedge Me Sideways'
