This was our favourite restaurant from our long weekend in Edinburgh. The waitress was so welcoming and friendly, and so knowledgeable. Having Portuguese connections ourselves, it was so nice to try Portuguese-Chinese fusion food. Minchi was bloody brilliant and the Duck main was phenomenal. The special small plate of Peixinhos Da Horta was also a highlight. Would totally recommend this place to anyone looking for a taste of something different, but comforting and familiar at the same time. 🇲🇴 🇵🇹

It was my first time dining at Macau Kitchen at Edinburgh. The first thing that caught my attention was the way the staffs interacted with the customers. Especially Hoeyyn , the way she explained about all the dishes were just so unique. The restaurant had a really nice ambience. Also their portion size is perfect .Their sweet sour spicy squid is so delicious. Overall , Macau Kitchen would be a very memorable part of my trip to Edinburgh.

The food here is excellent for Edinburgh standards. Octopus salad was basically a ceviche and done quite well, nice chew Proper flavours for the curry of the coconut crispy duck, and the fried duck was brined correctly. Delicious Golden ckn was alright, deep fried ckn and potatoes, in a golden sauce which was unique tasting and quite decent, not sure what they put inside but they mentioned tamarind as one of the ingredients. The special main of the day was this stir fry, of ckn thigh slices which were nice and pork sausage. The flavours were quite complex, but this isn't done in the traditional wok hey style so it's hard for me to judge if it's well executed. Nonetheless, pretty decent

My partner and I visited over the weekend having been given a voucher for the "chefs table" from a family member. Having never visited before we eere unsure what to expect but the staff looked after us throughout our meal. Each course was introduced to us by the staff, explaining what was included (and where needed how to eat the dish!). The chef table experience is a mystery menu, however at the point of booking you are asked some questions to make sure you don't get anything you are allergic, anything you really dislike and how spicy you like your food. From there leave it in their capable hands to give you a brilliant dining experience. It is also BYOB 🍷

The food is great. As somebody from Hong Kong, the Macanese food here contained familiar flavors with some unique twists. I highly recommend the Golden Chicken and Signature Coconut Duck. Also give the Salty Lemon 7-Up a shot, it's a Cantonese classic. The service is also amazing!

We found this place from reddit and I couldn't speak highly of it. Starting with the staff, they are very friendly and welcoming and ease you right in - especially because for first-timers, you wouldn't know the menu so well. Bare in mind that the restaurant is small and may not he wheelchair friendly. The BYOB policy was pretty good, and they serve plenty of creative Non alcoholic drinks. We had Spring Rolls and Spicy Polvo for our appetizers, and they were very, very good, especially Polvo. For our mains, we did Chef's specials for the day : Pork Pongdeh and Chicken Peri Peri, and let me tell you something, this was hands down one of the best meals I have ever had. Both pork and chicken were so tender, and the sauce they were cooked in combined perfectly with a side of rice. We loved it so much that we asked for a second bowl of rice. Also, if you like spicy food, order their special chilly sauce of the day. You won't regret it ( or you will next morning 😁 ) All in all, I would come back here next time I am in Edinburgh and would recommend everyone to eat here, at least once.

The food is incredible! I love these natural fusion cuisines, Chinese and Portugese in this case. The chefs are obviously real experts in the Macau cuisine. Seriously overpriced. Ordered spring rolls, they tasted as if they were from the freezer and were also over cooked/slightly burnt. One dish was basically mince and rice with a little spice. We also ordered a pork belly dish and it was the fattiest pork I've ever had. Such a shame as we had seen really good reviews for this place and were super excited to check it out but honestly feel the food was below average.

We stumbled upon this little gem tonight. Absolutely loved the two mains that we ordered - pork and duck… delicious flavour soooo yummy. Can’t fault it. The spring rolls as a starter was a bit average and overdone. Thicker ones with more flavour and a good sized dip would have been preferred. The pistachio desert was good also! The manager, chef and staff were so friendly and helpful, it felt very close nit and personal. We have booked to come again.

This was one of the best culinary experiences my family and I have had in a long time. We ate here a month ago and are still talking about it. The chef seemed very passionate about his work and each dish (duck, chicken curry, beef) were so flavorful, heartwarming and the meat was tender. The creme brulee at the end was so simple yet delicious too. Don't miss out on this!

What an incredible meal we had. The service and welcome were fabulous. All dishes on the menu and specials board were explained and they asked how spicy we enjoyed our food and cooked it accordingly. We choose a selection of dishes and shared, every dish was amazing, the flavours and quality of ingredients were phenomenal! We all enjoyed the food, atmosphere and staff greatly. We were very surprised by the bill and how inexpensive our meal had been. Every single detail is taken into account with this restaurant and I can’t wait to return!

Waited 45 mins as we stupidly didn’t reserve and it was more than worth it!! The staff kept updating us, including the chef and it was nice to wait and build an appetite - also allowed us to invite 2 more friends given the waiting time which made it even more exciting! What an amazing place - the food, the service and the atmosphere! The chef comes out multiple times to check in on people which gives a very personal touch - service is quick and there is a nice buzz about the place! The energy is amazing with loads of regulars and the staff actually remembering in many instances what they previously ordered - yes, I people watch! Portion size is good and they use good quality produce/ingredients. If you think you didn’t get enough portions, then you either didn’t order enough or you eat too much.. 😅 After taking pics of the first few dishes, just couldn’t be bothered as it was too delish to waste time. Spent an average of 40+ per person but that’s coz we were hungry and the food was just delish - ordered more than normal and wiped it clean. We even had a vegetarian in the group and they had a great Vegan option which we all tried and agreed it was really good.. Good job to the team and will defo come back again, and again and again and this time with a reservation!

Third time in here and I am excited every time we book a table because I know great food is coming our way. We had the special mustard chicken, the spring roll and the spicy polvo salad for starters. Everything was so tasty and the mains were even better. Chicken Pongteh is an all-time favourite for me, I don't think I have ever had a tastier dish in a restaurant. The sour pork belly curry was unlike any pork belly I have ever tried. Never came accross fat so rendered down that we did not even had to chew and the texture was more than perfect. Thank you Macau Kitchen again, we will be back soon!

We booked and unfortunately there was a district wide power cut in Edinburgh. Macau contacted us before asking if we still wished to proceed with a limited menu which we did. We had 3 courses as the power came back on before the mains arrived. Food was excellent with fresh ingredients. A different cuisine was fun to try, and service was very attentive, efficient and friendly. We will certainly return.

Our dinner at Macau Kitchen was the culinary highlight of our recent trip to Scotland. This unassuming and highly decorated restaurant serves amazing Luso-Asian fare, usually found in such places as Macau, Melaka, and Goa. Luso-Asian cuisine might not be that renowned, yet it blends two of the most delicious culinary traditions in the world -- Chinese and Portuguese. Everything we tried was exceptional and we specially recommend the "bolinhos de bacalhau" (salted-cod croquettes) as an appetizer. And for dessert, go for the "pastéis de nata!"

This is one of my most two favorite restaurants in the UK. They do not only offer you with the great taste but also pass on the food experience. All dishes are classic, yet innovative. This means they refine and improve the classic dishes within the traditional “framework” of cooking methods and ingredients. This cannot be done if the chef does not truly understand the spirit of each dish. The service is good, the place is clean, and the price is reasonable. Advance booking is needed. Highly recommended.

Asian American here. Food is good. Generous portions. Very friendly service. Nice decoration with interesting cultural vibes. They have a small regular menu and a daily special menu written on a blackboard. The classic manchi is hearty and filling. The house salad is very refreshing with a citrusy flavor. The golden dessert is great with a lemony flavor, not too sweet—perfect for my taste. I recommend going there with friends so you can share plates, as the portions are quite big for one person.

Best restaurant experience I've had in the city! Including food, service, atmosphere, vibes. Its a MUST VISIT. Very small and cozy with small menu crafted to perfection! Tried almost the full menu and every dish that kept on coming to the table was one better than the other! Mustard crispy chicken, Pineapple Squid and Coconut Duck were the highlights, but If they'd ask me to choose I would struggle to decide, because again, every single dish was unreal! This was an unexpected and most welcome, by chance, discovery. This is "Mom-and-Pops" at it's peak, the "Crème de la crème" The food was exquisite, cooked to perfection and perfectly balanced in flavour. The duck fell from the bone, the pork melted in the mouth, the "Golden Torta" popped with zesty layers and textures. The owners (Maître d' and Head Chef) were close at hand and engaging, providing the best tips for how to enjoy every last drop of sauce and making sure we didn't miss any perfect mouth feel opportunities. This was the best restaurant experience my partner and I have had in Edinburgh, trumping Michelin stars and à la carte fine dining. We will be back and recommending to everyone we know. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Third time at Macau Kitchen and it just does not disappoint! I brought my very critical foodie family there and they were very impressed too. We ordered a couple of the specials - if you ever see the sour pork curry on the specials board, then give it a try - and the staples of the coconut crispy duck and octopus salad. Plus a few other winners. The dessert didn't even look like much, but it was SO delicious! Just such a lovely vibe from the team and chef - thank you, as always.

I took my parents out for a meal and we had the most exceptional experience. Food was all amazing, service was even better. Incredibly accommodating and helpful with my allergies. It may look like a small menu online but they have a large menu that changes in everyday too. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone and will definitely be back many times in the future!

Was here solo for dinner on a Saturday evening. They don't have many tables and was busy through the course of my dinner so I felt lucky to be able to get a table. The place is well decorated with lots of details, however it does feel a little cramped so conversations are easily overheard. Still, it's probably a good choice for catch-up between a small group of friends - make sure you book in advance as they've already built up a local reputation. I tried their Chef's Vegan Duck. Didn't come with rice which was ordered separately. It was nice - if I was being pedantic I'd say the flavours could be better layered / balanced. Service was good. It was a pleasant surprise to find a Macanese restaurant in Scotland of all places. Do not misunderstood that this is like the typical restaurant in HK/Macau (茶餐廳). Think of it as a fusion Portuguese cuisine. In prices and menu. I can't comment about prices because I don't know where Scotland prices among diners. Dishes come in the size of tapas. Citrus mulberry tea - I'm impressed of the creativity. Very delicious hot drink. Not too sweet but very tasty. Octopus salad - Love the salad, the onion was perfect, not as spicy as most raw onion. However, I typically enjoy stronger flavor, I prefer the dressings to be more intense. Bolinhos De Bacalhau - Loved it. Very good quality. Like the best I've had in Portugal and Macau. Authentic and delicious! Spicy crispy basil chicken - Flavor and crispiness was perfectly done. The chicken was very lightly battered, or may be not. It crispy but doesn't notice the batter, so it may lightly powder with corn starch. The flavor was perfect and the sauce it used is like honey mustard. Really light up the dish. There crispy basil leaves was good also but probably should easy on the salt. But just the basil. Crispy curry duck - This dish is a fusion dish. Crispy duck was done perfectly. Taste great and even in the curry sauce it still taste crispy. The curry sauce reminded me of Thai curry but the good one. Slightly sweet and coconutty and I LOVE the cabbage salad. Finely chop cabbage and carrots underneath the crispy duck soaked in sauce made it a wonderful salad. The restaurant is small. Just get reservation. Respond by text very promptly. The lady was very "informative" and friendly, she's a Malay. We didn't ask the chef too much info, he is either Portuguese or Macanese, Portuguese born in Macau. I would have known if I could try they pastel de nata but they didn't have it on Sunday night. They weren't supposed to open on Sunday night but they texted us the night before since there wasn't any availability but invited us to come on Sunday night for they are preparing a special private dining for just one round of guests. I think texting is the best way to communicate with them.

Hubby and I came across this highly rated restaurant on Google and it did not disappoint. The food here was excellent and the host was an absolute ray of sunshine. She was super helpful in helping us select our dinner courses. She was super attentive and friendly. The crispy duck was hands down my favourite - one of the best duck dishes I've had. Simple, flavourful and super crispy yet tender. I was tempted to order a second helping for dessert 😂. The chocolate cake was rich and super moist - it's a sponge cake. The other two dishes we ordered were just as tasty! I would 100% go back to this restaurant and would definitely recommend it. It's a good idea to make a reservation if you do visit as it was packed the entire time we were here.

A very unique blend of Macau - West style cuisine. While they do have their staple menu, they usually rotate and change their menu of the day to keep things fresh, which is great because you can always order something new. This is intentional since the chef loves to experiment with new dishes or to just tinker with his menu. I find that admirable and brings more value to their dishes. All staffs are also very friendly and are so helpful in explaining the dishes and won't hesitate to give their recommendation to you.

Macau Kitchen is one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh and I always recommend it to my friends who are visiting or living in Edinburgh. Hoyyen is a gracious host and my friends and I have always had a lovely time. Their secret menu events are top-tier and unique. The best meal I’ve had in Edinburgh was actually at one of these events. I cannot recommend this place enough♥️

Delicious food and amazing dining experience, great fusion of flavours with some authentic dishes like Bak kut teh making an appearance on their specials. Its a small restaurant so booking advised, the host and chef will come out to greet you and have a chat and cracking some jokes to keep things jolly, making it a really cool informal dining experience and more like having good dinner with family and friends! We have been back a couple of times already as the menu changes and will come back again soon!

Fantastic experience. The food was unique and extremely tasty, special mention to the duck dish which was incredible - crispy duck, with creamy coconut base and complimentary spices and veg accompanying it. Really great mix of flavours. The menu seemed short on the website but there was an array of specials on the board which rounded the selection out perfectly. The service was extremely attentive, passionate about their food and keen to contextualise the dishes and give recommendations. The chef visited the tables to give advice on how to eat it and to ask how you enjoyed it. We had three courses with a mix of menu and specials, couldn't fault a dish. A genuine hidden gem, we will definitely go back!

We had such a lovely meal here. Cozy little restaurant serving absolutely delicious food, with warm and friendly service. We were well taken care of and didn't feel rushed. It's BYOB and felt relaxed and homey. One of my favourite meals I've ever had in Edinburgh, with incredible flavour and fresh ingredients. All of the staff were clearly proud of the dishes they were serving up, and we had the chance to let the talented chef know how much we enjoyed our meal. Will be back as soon as we can!

Amazing place and original cuisine. Staff is great and very pleasant and the chef serves and explains the dishes himself. Definitely a place to try out, it seems to have its regulars though. The braised pork was amazing, and the quality of their jasmine rice is unmatched!! vegan/nut-free options. Make sure to call ahead though as it gets quite busy and walk-in might not be served.

Had an amazing experience at Macao Kitchen this Friday! The servers were very friendly and helped explain all the dishes. It was a blast to have been able to try Macanese cuisine. In particular the duck spring rolls and pork dishes were great. It was very busy and some walk ins could not secure a table so make sure to reserve in advance. Overall a pleasurable experience and would recommend!

We had an amazing time at the restaurant tonight! From the minute we walked in we felt like we were special guests. It was the last day of Chinese New Year so we’re lucky enough to get some of their specials including a ‘tossing salad’, a traditional dish which involves multiple ingredients each with a particular significance. For dessert we had glutinous rice stuffed with sesame or peanut balls floating in an exquisite hot sauce of cinnamon and ginger. It’s a tiny space with a fantastic vibe. Will definitely go back.

My husband & I found this place last summer during the Fringe Fest and fell in love. We love in Glasgow but the trip is absolutely worth it. The restaurant offers a small, warm, intimate dining experience that makes you feel like you've been invited into the owner/chefs home kitchen. The food is out of this world and the portions are excellent for the price. The first time we went we ended up leaving with the cookbook written by the chef, we were so excited to have a further window in Macanese food and other flavors of the Portuguese spice trade. I highly recommend ordering the minchi! We've been back twice and already have reservations for a 4th visit on the book, used the cookbook several times, and truly cannot say enough about how much we love eating here. We both highly highly recommend it!!
