Best Sunday roast I’ve had out in years. I would highly recommend. Melt in the mouth roast beef at a reasonable price . Book early as it’s always full. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Great views from restaurant,

Just come back from a three day biking holiday with 4 mates. This hotel was absolutely great and the food was superb. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff at this family hotel and restaurant. The rooms are spacious and the beds very comfortable, just what was needed after some intense riding on the nearby 7 Stanes trails. The only issue I have is after 4 days riding my scales seem to have gone the wrong way. Thanks for making us so welcome.

Have stayed here several times and always eat at the restaurant atleast once. Eaten solo and as a large family and always enjoyed the food and service. Very friendly staff make you feel at home, and always accommodating. They provided a highchair which is great, although didn't feel the safest we've had to be honest. Foods consistently good, I'd recommend the roast beef but it's all good

We booked for a Sunday lunch when we arrived it was fairly quiet but soon filled up. I wanted the 3 courses meal but didn't fancy the veggie option but they happily swapped this to a different vegetarian meal . The tomato and red pepper soup was gorgeous. Our mains were stunning and the pudding which we shared was gorgeous. My partner had the fish which was huge but he still managed to have food envy when the table next door burger arrived!! Staff very attentive and friendly Huge car park with great views

Struggled to get a table on a Friday night they were so busy. They were very accommodating and fitted us in. Basic bar menu eaten in the bar area - great choices and food great. Food is beautiful. All homemade and great portion sizes. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, and even better if you can cozy beside the fire. Only downside is it’s a little out of town so you need a designated driver due to the lack of taxi’s in town, but this is no fault of the hotel. A strong favourite in our family!

We are on holiday in the area, and our hosts recommended the Mabie House Hotel for a meal, and we were not disappointed. The staff are very friendly, the food was excellent, and we found it very good value. There was a cheerful atmosphere with lots of families out enjoying themselves. We had the mussels as a main, and a delicious salmon dish from the specials menu, followed by extraordinary sundaes - all freshly made - a sticky toffee pudding one, and a mint choc chip aero one! We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Thank you everyone.

What a stunning location the evening meal was exceptional, I had the roast beef and my husband the steak pie and all the staff were amazing. Couldn’t do enough for us! We had our blind dog and the staff couldn't do enough for us, she's on a bland diet and prescription diet which she wasnt fussy on and the chap at breakfast gave her a wee bowl of scrambled egg(kept her quiet as does bark for human food). The table in Reception was already set out for us coming down for breakfast. Had the best night sleep in ages and Basil the parrot was gorgeous chatting away, the grounds are breathtaking too, very quick at answering emails too didnt catch everyones name but Phillipa very helpful and friendly

The friendly staff member who served us was attentive and made us feel most welcome. Had originally booked this hotel for 2 nights but after sleep deprivation only stayed the one sleepless night. Please avoid room 4 which kept me awake with the continual humming sound of what I thought was the central heating or kitchen extractor fan.The next morning at breakfast, looking particularly bleary eyed I sat down for breakfast and was joined by another couple on the next table. After exchanging pleasantries Richard enquired how I had slept because he had previously had room 4 and didn't get a wink of sleep all night...same problem.I then spoke to the duty manager and asked if there was an issue with noise whereupon she admitted the late turn receptionist had forgotten to turn off the ice making machine, hence the noise.I enquired if there had been previous issues which she categorically denied but then had to eat humble pie when I mentioned Richard's story. A blatant liar.In conclusion I decided not to stay, received an apology but had to pay the full price ....disgrace.

Very impressive place set high on the hill, we went to celebrate our birthdays with high hopes.Although we had a table booked, there was no-one at reception on arrival and not having been before we weren't sure where to go, and no bell to ring for attention. The dining area was set with un-clothed tables, place mat, cutlery and a simple folded paper napkin, which we found a little disappointing.Although it was, technically, an a la carte type menu there was a very limited choice of only five dishes each on the starters and mains.Don't get me wrong, the food we did choose was excellent but the experience was more of a good bar meal than the celebratory one we were looking forward to.The one member of staff on duty in the eating area (I wouldn't class it as a restaurant) was very good, I'm sorry I didn't catch her name to give her the credit she deserves.

Attended a recent wedding here. Alcohol very reasonably priced. After attending a few wedding in the area this year mabie house is most certainly the cheapest. This is good as we all drank from the bar and not from our car as per previous weddings at other venues. The food was beautiful. Chicken and haggis was so soft and the sauce was amazing. Day ran smoothly. We were in a marquee which I know was not supplied by the venue however you would not know this as there was a beautifully lit pathway to where said marquee was erected. Toilets were very clean. Main bar area was clean and modern yet full of original character. Only critisism was the ceremony was down a very steep banking to the grass would suggest making a walkway down. And the drive way blew dust in our faces with the slightest gust of wind. Other than that perfect day.

I’ve had a couple of meals here recently with my Mum with different outcomes although this comes down to personal preferences. The hotel itself is a country house sitting in its own well maintained grounds within the Mabie Forest. There are walks and cycle tracks nearby. We generally find it is quiet and relaxed. Staff in our experience are willing to converse with customers in a friendly manner.Last month my Mum had her favourite dish, Salmon (£12.95) whilst I had the Sweet Chicken Curry (£9.95) both of which were tasty and filling. In an attempt to try something different recently my Mum had one of the specials on offer - Pan Fried Gammon Steak served with pineapple, chips and a salad garnish (£10.95). I opted for the Homemade Steak & Ale Pie served with chips and vegetables (£10.95). Whilst both dishes were of good quality the portion size of the gammon was particularly huge and an immediate turn-off for my elderly Mum. It reminded us of one of those food challenges where diners able to clear the plate are given the meal for free (in the knowledge that few will succeed). After her brief attempt to tackle the gammon I had to offer to swap dishes knowing that she was not enjoying her lunch. The steak pie wasn’t a small portion either however at least she ate some of it.I didn’t manage to finish the gammon so the next time around we must remember to either stick to her favourite or enquire if there are smaller portions available for some of the dishes as suggested by the member of staff on duty. She was kind enough to deduct the cost of our tea and coffee in compensation for my Mum’s disappointment.Be prepared for large portions is the general advice.

Mabie House Hotel proved to be the ideal place to eat out - a lovely house in beautiful surroundings, welcoming entrance hall, oak-lined dining-room, a table with a view out over the lawn to the distant hills. A good start to the evening! Atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, service attentive and well-timed. A varied and interesting menu with plenty of local produce, and our vegetarian was pleased to have a choice of main courses. Mid-week lunch and the lounge bar was quiet as expected. It’s a country-style house in substantial grounds roughly 15 minutes drive from Dumfries with plenty of parking on the front drive.Nearby in the forest there are popular bike trails and walks. The menu is fairly large and is supplemented with several specials displayed on the blackboard and you can get everything from a sandwich to a three course meal.We chose the Pan Fried Solway Salmon topped with sundried tomato garlic butter and served with fresh vegetables and new potatoes (£12.95) and the Breast of Chicken stuffed with haggis (£12.95). The chicken came with the same vegetable selection - a mix of broccoli, green beans and chunks of carrots - and although it was to have been served with a peppercorn sauce this was substituted on request by a whisky sauce which was readily accommodated. Both dishes were very good with the only slight issue being that the vegetables had been done al dente style and were therefore a bit firm for my Mum’s liking - they were ideal in my opinion!Next for dessert we had the Meringue with berries and the White Chocolate Cheesecake - both delicious and the fruit was as if freshly picked.I’m not sure what the final bill was since my Mum kindly picked up the tab however based on rough assumptions it was good value.Very restful atmosphere and good food set us up for a wee trip down to Rockcliffe and Kippford on the coastal route about ½ hour away.

The food was delivered without undue delay, although we hadn't booked, portions were plentiful and the food was hot and fresh. Popped in for lunch recently to this country house style hotel and as before we were able to relax in the peaceful surroundings, joined by the occasional small group of cyclists who were in for a drink or meal (the forest setting has popular bike trails).Despite the reasonable menu selection, including multiple “specials”, being creatures of habit for mains I had their Chicken and Apricot Curry, served with rice and a poppadom (£9.95) and my Mum had the Pan Fried Salmon with a sun dried tomato garlic butter, served with new potatoes, broccoli and carrots (£12.95). Both dishes were nicely cooked, were generous portions and went down a treat. To follow I had the Fruit Cheesecake - it was topped with fresh fruit however I wasn’t mad about the base which tasted perhaps as though the digestives had past their crunchy best. My Mum selected the Profiteroles and despite some doubts about her appetite she managed to clear the plate quite successfully! (Desserts were £11.90). Add a ½ pint and an Appeltiser and our bill came to £38 which we thought was very good value.Service was friendly and efficient as before in our experience and the sun even made a brief appearance in the grounds - a bonus this summer in Scotland. The hotel has a peaceful, old world charm and is ideal for a quiet lunch or dinner (provided they don’t have a wedding on at the time of your visit).

We stayed at a local rental cottage and walked to the hotel for Sunday lunch. Although only 1 of us had Sunday lunch as though there was a decent size menu and a good amount of specials on the board there was little in the way of Sunday roast. The food we did have was excellent though and we all (13 of us!) thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband who had the beef dinner said it was the best beef he had ever had, and my chicken and apricot curry was delicious (although seemed more Chinese or Thai than Indian but absolutely lovely). Sweets were good size and tasty. Not a particularly cheap menu but definitely very good quality and quantity and service good. If I had one complaint it would be the children's food came with no vegetables at all and so we had to order some after their meal arrived, normally there would be at least a portion of beans or peas alongside the kids food. The chicken nuggets though did appear to be homemade and not a single one was left on the plate.Would recommend this restaurant and would go out of our way to return.

I had a meal supplied here while i was up doing work, i usually dread pre organised meals but this was a fantastic surprise. The risotto starter was one of the best I've ever eaten, my only personal criticism was that it was slightly salty for my taste but wow it was good. The main was a wonderful piece of beef which had been cooked extremely well and the sides for having been cooked in a large batch were fresh and very very delicious. Pudding was fantastic almost like a p/cotta but was slightly different though the flavour was incredible.Considering there was a large wedding on most of the staff were fantastic and very attentive, one had a bit of an attitude and stormed around making things a little awkward but she wasn't seen again after our main arrived - that i was thankful for.i am very much looking forward to being back.

Friends and I shared a meal here for Valentines night. As a rule we go out together about once a month and are always trying somewhere different and although the setting and the building is beautiful the service somewhat let it down. The general consensus was that although most of us enjoyed our meals it was a bit overpriced. Of the meals that were had the ones most enjoyed were those who had the lamb shank which I am told was very nice indeed. The staff were nice enough but we had to ask for someone to come and take our order after we had been sat waiting for quite a considerable time and then again the same thing waiting to order a dessert. The desserts were nowhere near as nice as the main courses and there was nothing to tell you the cost as they were read out at the table. All in all it was OK it had it's really positive points and a few negative ones which is why I have given it three stars.

Had a lunch and a dinner recently, will not be going back. Service reasonable, table had to be cleaned, meal very mediocre. There was a wedding on when we went for dinner and they were very busy, but that is no excuse. The day I had coffee I was very disappointed as I wanted it outside and eventually I went in to find it was sitting on the bar waiting for me to collect!!! Not impressed. Mona Thomson Dumfries

We dropped in for a coffee and cake post mountain bike trail and we received a warm reception in this rather grand establishment despite being attired in muddy biking gear. When we saw the fare being served we couldn't resist the roast rib of beef dinner which was to die for. The beef was melt in the mouth in a rich gravy, perfectly cooked vegetables and a Yorkie Pud the size of a mountain. A delicious piping hot cup of coffee with complementary home made shortbread rounded off a perfect lunch - we will be back!

The hotel is situated on a hillside within its own substantial grounds overlooking the Dumfriesshire countryside. Access is a few miles outside Dumfries along a single track driveway signposted for Mabie Forest which has speed bumps. The hotel is clearly indicated along the drive and has its own spacious car park. It’s a picturesque setting, popular for weddings. The style of the place is old country house but despite the light coming through large bay windows facing the front, the lounge bar can be quite dark looking especially towards the fireplace area unless it’s a sunny day. We’ve been a couple of times recently, on one occasion when there were a variety of guests including some cyclists from the nearby trails and a few weeks ago when we were the only diners present and it was therefore lacking in atmosphere!Service on both occasions was friendly and efficient from the same barman/waiter/telephonist who managed to cope with late arrivals during one of the visits with great patience and tact. As for the food, it was very good on the first occasion and only fairly good second time around. There’s a decent choice on the menu of about 7 or 8 main courses, supplemented by a similar number of specials on the blackboard so there should be something to meet most tastes. They also serve snacks like baked potatoes and sandwiches if you’re looking for something lighter. On the first occasion I had the Sweet Chicken and Apricot Curry with Basmati rice and poppadoms which was excellent (I’ve had this previously and it’s been consistent). My mother had Baked Solway Salmon with a prawn & dill cream sauce served with new potatoes and vegetables which she thoroughly enjoyed. It was all served piping hot and in plentiful fashion. On the most recent visit I had the salmon dish which wasn’t done as well as the first time but was still ok - it was served with new potatoes and broccoli. My mother had haddock prepared with breadcrumbs, rather than beer batter, on request. Again it was just ok but she wasn’t so impressed with the “hard” chips accompanying the fish. From the huge choice of desserts available she followed up with apple crumble with custard which she enjoyed and I had the meringue with chantilly cream and strawberries. The meringue looked and tasted shop bought.Mains courses cost around £11-£13, desserts around £5.It’s the kind of place to go for a relaxing lunch - or with your Mum - which you could follow up with a stroll in the nearby forest to walk off the calories if you’re feeling guilty.

We have been touring the Solway coast and have used the Mabie House Restaurant on two occasions in the last few weeks. The food and service have been very good. I would recommenced a meal here from our experienceThe setting is very attractive and the building also has character. The bar prices are in my opinion a little high, but nice setting.

What a lovely hotel. My Dad and I went to have a look-see to book somewhere to celebrate my sister's birthday. The menu was attractive so we rang and booked. We were 8 in all.We turned up the next day and found we had a good table by the window. The service was very good. Our waitress was helpful - she appeared with a bucket and bottle of champagne which my brother had paid for from his hotel in Ibiza!!We all had 3 courses - Starters: fabulous tiger prawns, a chicken liver pate to die for (my niece's choice), soup, haggis and goat's cheese.Main courses: roast beef which the hugest Yorkshire puds; steak pie, burger, salmon. All well cooked. Plus I asked for extra gravy and this appeared very quickly - my own personal gravy boat!!Puddings: Sticky toffee pudding, ice cream, chocolate pot, apple crumble. The quality of the produce was obvious - all sources locally. There was a real mixture of people - families, mountain bikers, couples - and there was a wedding so we had a bit of extra excitement.Their rooms are good value too from the look of it, so perhaps next year we might stay there.

Excellent setting, Mabie forest is a great place to go for a walk or especially well set up for mountain biking. Very nice friendly accommodating staff. The food was simple, beautifully presented and everyone was very happy with their choice. The fish was fresh and the vegetables were varied and tasty. The puddings were delicious. Portions were generous too. The staff did not rush you and were very attentive - will definitely be visiting again!

I do like my decaf cappuccinos hot and it can be a rarity but my coffee at Mabie was very hot which allowed me to linger over it. I ordered the beef roast dinner which came with perfectly cooked veg, brocolli, carrots, green beans, two new potatoes and a roastie. The Yorkshire pudd was huge. Gravy very tasty but could have done with a gravy boat as I do like my roast dinners swimming in gravy! Other members of the party had, fish and chips, chicken stuffed with haggis and a roast beef sandwich with a side portion of very hot chips, all pronounced very good.

I am always very happy to return to Mabie House Hotel. The food here is always very good and the staff are always very helpful and friendly.Last week i took a customer to dinner here who incidentally was also staying the night at Mabie House Hotel. We both vey much enjoyed the food, i have been several times and they have a great choice and nice sizeable portions. The cost is also very reasonable, highly recommended in my view.As a side note i also had my wedding here and the food that was prepared for me and my guests even for 70+ people was top notch. Alot of my guests have said that it is the best meal they have ever had at any wedding. They were all very impressed with the sizeable portions that were on offer. Mabie's staff made our wedding that bit more special. On a beautiful day you can also sit at the window and enjoy the spectacular view over the Scottish countryside. If the mood takes you the Mabie Woods are right on the doorstep for a good walk or cycle.I will always thanks them for doing a good job and very much highly recommended.

We ate here whilst staying for a couple of nights. It was so good the first night that we abandoned our plans to go out and ate here the second night as well. Over two nights between us we had: Fish and Chips; Roast Beef and Yorkshire puds; Chicken Curry and Chicken with Cheese and Bacon. We would recommend them all - Delicious!! We had our little boy with us and the chef would pretty much have made him anything. We will return to Mabie House.

My husband and I have spent several short breaks at Mabie House Hotel and have chosen to have an evening meal there too. The service has always been friendly and efficient and the food of a high quality with sufficient variety to suit our needs. The Dumfries area appears to offer competitive prices for eating out compared to other parts of the country and Mabie, I would say, is in line with this.We look forward to our next visit.

We have just had a meal here, to celebrate the wedding anniversary of our friends. It was a brilliant evening. I have allergies to several foods and had completely forgotten to warn the staff beforehand. The waitresses were very polite about this and, while producing delicious food for a large number of people, the chef managed to also produce a lovely alternative meal for me. My partner told an animated story and, when he was gesticulating, he sent a mug of coffee flying, which spilt on the table cloth and chair, with a small splash on my dress. Again the staff were really polite and kind and they rushed to get cloths to clean my dress and did not appear concerned about the tablecloth or chair.I conclude that we were problematic customers but the staff at Mabie were fantastic and looked after us with such kindness, as well as the meal being delicious. We highly recommend this place for a special evening. We will be back soon, but we will try to behave better next time.

Just back from our 4th stay at Mabie House and the food was as delicious as ever, top class, thanks to Polly, the Chef. We ate 2 meals there, Scampi (huge wholetail Scampi pieces) with a stack of thick-cut chips and dressed salad, and Wild Boar & Apple Sausages with herby mash and Jus - absolutely delicious. At just over £35 total for 2 large main courses and a good bottle of red wine, that is definitely value for money, in our experience! Topped off by a whisky nightcap and good craic with Chris or Sam - it just doesn't get any better than this!Val & Alex

We (my wife and I) popped in to Mabie Hotel on a Tuesday evening and were so happy we did! Had a roaring fire going and we just settled in next to it while we were given menus to peruse.A taste of the past for me having a pint of Caffreys from the bar, not seen that around for a while, and it made for a perfect feeling of contentment sitting next to the fire supping away! The food arrived pretty darn quick, I had a lovely pate starter, delicious fine pate and a generous portion, served with lovely bread and crackers. Didn't realise the amount would be so large, but perfect to share with a partner :)The main course was Grouse and Haggis, OMG, WOW and many other superliatives spring to mind. I'd been out to dinner recently to a newly refurbished hotel/restaurant in Thornhill and was a little (a lot) dissapointed with both the price and the meager portions. (Not that I'm averse to some fine dining, I just expect that if I'm given a small delicately arranged portion of food that each mouthful will burst with flavour in my mouth - that didn't happen)At Mabie it did. I savoured every mouthful of this previously untasted (to me) delicacy and enjoyed every mouthful. My wife also absolutely enjoyed her food, i'm sorry to admit I can't remember what she had, so enamored was I with my own!Anyhow, great price, great atmosphere, super friendly staff (barman was a big help when deciding what to eat) and just a lovely experience. We'll be back. again and again...

The food is terrible , the steak pie was cold and the veg looked very unappetising and certainly not worth the over inflated prices or bar prices for what you get . The owner niki is rude and arrogant .The hotel has started up a seperate reviews page for their bar and restaurant to hide the negative views on their hotel site .Avoid like the plague there is much better value in Dumfries itself.

The SWI had our Christmas Meal here this year and pre ordered. I had the turkey and trimmings which was served on a huge platter and three huge slices of turkey. Everything cooked to perfection. I took the apple strudel and ice cream - great ice cream. Everyone enjoyed what they had ordered and a lovely atmosphere, and attentive serving staff who were pleased to see us and cheery.

We had a superb midweek supper here with friends in November. Bit of a trek from Dumfries but well worth the visit, and even closer to the M74 for anyone travelling up to Scotland in need of a refreshment. The haggis bites were delicious and the lamb kleftiko simply melted in the mouth. Their Chilean SB was extremely gluggable and very reasonably priced. Abbey and Jack were the best hosts. Highly recommended.
