Lucano in Orkney Islands

Amazing experience, so much choice it took me forever to decide! Friendly waiter, food was delicious and I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Very unsuspecting place when you walk inside but greeted by some very friendly staff. Traditional Italian vibe inside with a nice sized menu and each dish (either pizza or pasta) that was ordered was really lovely. Left feeling satisfied with full bellies. Thanks again 😊

We visited this excellent Italian restaurant last night. A friendly young lady showed us to a table and left us with menus. My wife chose carbonara and I had a rustica pizza. Both meals were delicious and filling. Couldn’t fault anything about this restaurant, friendly helpful staff and great food at just over £50 for two main courses, desserts and drinks we can definitely recommend. We will definitely be back on any future visits to Kirkwall.

We visited for dinner, and had difficulty accessing the restaurant due to the number of persons waiting for takeaway meals. After several minutes and attempts we gained the attention of a staff member and asked if one of the empty tables was available. After checking, we were directed to a table and provided with menus, which had a good range of choice. It was confirmed that dietary requirements could be catered for and we placed orders. Although once in and seated, the service and food was good, and meticulous care was taken over satisfying dietary requirements, the congestion at the entrance continued during our visit, including with what appeared to be family and friends of the owners?/staff. This and our original experience has unfortunately resulted in our overall "average" rating

Petsitting hosts treated me to a lovely dinner takeaway from Lucano. The Bianca pizza was delicious that evening and as breakfast the following day. Would recommend if you have a craving for Italian while in Orkney.

The Carbonara was excellent, like being back in Italy. Staff was professional and friendly. Gluten free pasta was available and prepared correctly, nice selection of Italian wines and local beers and whiskies.

Mycket god gnocchi, precis vad som efterfrågas av en lunch. Köttfärssåsen var också bra. Fin service och god espresso.

Best takeaway pizza in Kirkwall

Pizza, tricolore salad, 3 pasta dishes & 3 desserts were all 5s. Service was friendly & efficient. Best restaurants during our 4 days on Mainland by far.

Every time we visit Orkney we always have dinner at Lucano's. But this time we were very disappointed, service was very poor and the food went seriously downhill! The pasta's were very bland, mine had no taste, the tomato sauce was too sweet and the capers had no taste and even the pizza was sad....

It was busy in the night I came to Lucanos. The service was prompt, and the staff were friendly. The food didn't meet expectation, to be honest, which was a shame, the gnocchi was a little bland, as for the garlic bread it fell below expectation, a baguette with garlic butter and cheese was very basic. I also felt that it was not value for money and was overpriced. In all the reception was prompt and friendly, the food could have been a lot better and would then have been with what I had paid.

I was delighted to find authentic Italian cuisine in Orkney! The food is delicious, fresh, and the portions are generous. Che buono! The staff is warm and welcoming and the prices are reasonable. This is the second time I have been to this restaurant and it is just as incredible as I remember from my last visit to Orkney. I highly recommend Lucano!

I'm a many-times returning customer; the quality of the pasta sauces is what brings me back. That and the friendly staff. It's a lovely surprise to find authentic Italian food in a place as remote as Orkney.

Well attended and good quality food

We went here 2 nights in a row, first for take out when they gave us a child's pizza by accident then said they were too busy to change it, the wnd might we sat in and the place was mostly empty, the service was excellent however the food was bland and overpriced, and the lasagne was terrible. I do not recommend, I was unaware you could mess up a lasagne.

Staff were excellent but the food was very overpriced. Lasagne had a gritty texture and came without any bread, chips or salad which is pretty pricey at over £20. Other dishes were bland and expensive. Shame cause I had take away the night before, pasta with spicy sausage which was nice

I don't normally do reviews, but this place was a disaster. We went in with a group of 6. They can't split checks so we sat as 2 tables of 3. Table 1 ordered and they sent it to the kitchen. The waitress came back and took Table 2's order. Table 1 had ordered a couple starters. Table 2's food showed up quickly and we insisted they eat without us. They finished their meal while Table 1 sat with no food. About 30 minutes after we ordered our starters showed up. Then another 20 minutes past with nothing. We ran out of time and asked to have our meals boxed. That took another 10 minutes. The place seems to be run by a bunch of teenagers and I'm sure they were just punishing us for asking to split the ticket. Plus, they were fairly rude about the whole situation. This is a huge shame because last year we ate here with no issues and convinced our friends to go with us this time. Never again.

Took forever to get food. Servers were rude. When seated we were told "we have specials, read them yourself". Ordered a starter. A cup of olives. Waited 30 minutes for that. Then after an hour we said to just box it up. No apologies, no explanation. Food was ok. One dish was the equivalent of grocery store pasta sauce on noodles. The carbonara was good. Avoid this place if you can. There are far better options.

Osso Buco was massive. Enough to feed three. Meat was very tender. Sauce and accompaniments were fresh, tasty and nicely seasoned. Gnocchi was ok. Sauce was a bit average.

Reservations are necessary because this restaurant is very good and there is not much on offer in Kirkwall (we were there in June). Have an appetizer and a pasta or main course instead of pizza, fresh vegetables and authentic southern Italian taste! Nice service.

Don't come here for a simple pasta and beer because it's far too expensive. Maybe the "specials" and a fancy wine are worth it.

Really bland, tasteless food, the seafood in the linguine was from frozen bar the exception of 3 mussels on the dish… the pizza was overladen with cheese and poor quality pesto and tomatoes. We will not be back…

Service was fast and efficient, unfortunately the food was tasteless. We ordered the seafood paata and the pesto pizza but none of the ingredients felt fresh. A let down was especially the pasta itself which wasn't home made or had any strong seafood taste. It's a nice restaurant at least.

Wonderful food, coffee, wine and tiramisu! The owner takes the time to ensure you are taken care off! We had scallops, chicken, and a pasta dish. The focaccia bread was authentic and delicious.

Terrible meal , terrible service ! Both had carbonara , one came without any source , unbelievable .Told the staff and when they brought it back it was swimming in source . They forgot our starters and then decided to bring them out just after giving us carbonara . Far too pricey for Italian pasta (£18.95 for basic carbonara) and beer was £9.00 . Worst Italian ever .

Superb meal.. fish based specials were special all cooked to order. Starters good, service just what you need for an Italian.but obviously challenged with staffing. Definitely recommended. We would return😊

When a person is visiting the Orkney mainland, you don't immediately think of Italian for dinner. On recommendation from our tour guide, we had dinner there. Walked in to see tables packed together like sheep (no pun intended) which gave it a homey atmosphere. As a starter, we had the mozzarella focatia that came out looking like a pizza. Very tasty. I ordered the carbonara 1/2 size (just a little too salty for my taste) as I wanted to save room for the honeycomb cheese cake. I was expecting the dense New York style. This was light and fluffy and tasted wonderful! Highly recommend!

I think about the calzone every day - its been 6 months. I was working in Orkney for a month and I wouldn’t have coped with 13 hour days if it wasn’t for Lucano. Calzone with pesto is INSANE UPDATE: Standards dropped. Its not as good as before… 4/5 max

The restaurant was busy and seemed rather disorganized. The wine we ordered took forever to arrive and the food was disappointing. We’ve travelled a lot in Italy and can’t imagine how an Italian would respond to the poor quality of many of the ingredients used here. The tomatoes in the Avocado Tricolore were hard and tasteless, fortunately the mozzarella was fresh and tasty. The Spaghetti alla Puttanesca was almost inedible—and featured an excess of poor quality, canned olives. The Spaghetti alla Bolgnese was fine, but no better than what we make at home. Fortunately the pasta was al dente in both dishes, but tasted like supermarket quality. The ratings and reviews on google suggested this would be an above-average dining experience—we found both the price and quality to be just average.

Middling food lacking flavour. Not very fresh salad (probably pre-cut hours ago). Desserts on the menu are uninspired - almost all were variants of vanilla ice cream. We instead chose a “Highland Park cheese cake” from the display case, which turned out to be mostly flavoured whipped cream with more whipped cream from a can on the side. Probably the worst cheese cake I’ve had (couldn’t finish it). One in our party said he came closer and closer to throwing up with each bite. High prices, especially for what you’re getting. Service was efficient and competent. Would not visit again.

Had dinner for two consecutive days in Lucano . The food as well as the ambience was totally to my liking. It is a cosy and family oriented place to have tasty meals.

This place was a very nice surprise to find at the last moment. The menu said the pasta was spicy, and it actually was. I love spicy food, so this was a wonderful surprise Their food was wonderful, and our server was fantastic.

Popped in for a quick bite. We had the minestrone soup and a toastie. It was very tasty and hot. Staff were friendly and helpful. We were the only people there, it was 3pm, therefore no atmosphere to report. Would recommend 👌

Nice food and friendly service with well prepared Italian flair. Cafe style seating. Now the problem is the pricing is really over the top. One has a choice, of course, but £33 pounds for a modest specials plate fish trio was very poor value.

Food is good, but I think its very expensive. I ordered a 1/2 portion of spaghetti bolognese which cost £13 . It was exceedingly small and would not have been enough for my 2 year old Grandson! Not sure if it has changed hands, but it used to be very reasonably priced with generous portions. Could not fault the staff and the premises were super clean.

The friendly vibrant atmosphere offered with our coffees a few days earlier encouraged us to return for an evening meal. However the food was overpriced and disappointingly underwhelming. Bruschetta was appalling, particularly for £9. The affogato was an affront to the name with it just being plain ice cream covered in a liquer. Service from a different set of staff although efficient lacked lustre. No wonder it was so quiet on a Saturday evening.

Lucannos really is our go-to place for lunch or dinner in Kirkwall. We are so happy they made it though the COVID and make lovely Italian meals for us here in Orkney. They are a community asset. Tourists who think they should have cheap food in Orkney need consider the service they are getting and where they are. And tip big.

No complaints really, great food, nice music and ambience. Had a lovely lunch break there. My only moment of confusion was the focaccia I ordered that turned out to be a pizza base with oil garlic and rosemary when I was expecting the fluffy bread version. It was still quite tasty so I didn't feel I had to bring it up.

Lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff who are great with kids. Plenty of choice on the menu and the specials are nice and varied.

Left a bit hungry and disappointed. No locals in but a few tourists. I couldn’t believe how expensive the food was considering the size of the portions and compared to other local restaurants! After a starter and a main which were fine enough I left hungry. I could have had a dessert to fill me up but after nearly £40 already I couldn’t risk it! The food was ok with calamari which was good but salads come with no dressing, 6 scallops turned out to be tiny little ones served with a few veg and wedges. I would have liked an accurate description of what I was ordering and more food for the money paid.

We loved the staff - super friendly & enthusiastic. The restaurant is clean and bright but perhaps a little bit like a canteen. The food, the main reason for coming to a restaurant: It was OK, nothing you could really complain about, but nothing really stood out either. The pizzas were tasty but quite thinly topped and the bolognese was rather watery. Prices somewhat on the high side for what you get.

Walked in without a booking. What a lovely place, nice atmosphere, great staff. The food was good and a reasonable price. If you are in Kirkwall give it a go.

I visited here whilst on a road trip for a wee bite to eat. I just wanted a small snack so ordered a bacon & egg ciabatta which I can quite honestly say was possibly one of the best butties I've had in a long time, the bacon was perfectly cooked as was the egg which was hard and not runny, just as we had requested. I would recommend visiting here to anyone if you are looking for something similar👍🏼

Upscale food without upscale prices. Easily the best Italian food I’ve eaten in the UK. The mozzarella focaccia is a must! And then finish with strawberry cheesecake.

This restaurant is fabulous. We ate here on two evenings during our trip to Orkney. Both times the food was exceptional and the service perfect. It’s also well priced. Try their gooseberry and apple treacle crumble if it’s on the specials, it’s truly fabulous.

Arrived late having had a poor experience elsewhere. Made to feel very welcome and had excellent service. Food was very good and would recommend as a place to eat in Kirkwall.

We went with a party of 7 at 8pm on a Friday. I had the spaghetti al puttanesca and my friend had the spinach and formaggio bake. Other members of our party had various meat and vegetarian dishes. We unanimously agreed that the food was absolutely outstanding. I haven't tasted restaurant food this good for a long time. It was nice to see two options on many of the main meals; for a full size dish at around £12 - £16 and a smaller portion (which was plenty for me) priced at around £10 - £12. This is a hidden gem of Orkney - it's just a couple of minutes walk from St Magnus cathedral in the opposite direction to the main tourist trail. Don't leave the island without making a visit. Special mention to our lovely waiter who did such an excellent job.

Eight of us went to Lucano to celebrate my cousin’s birthday. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the service was excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meal and they also catered for my wife who is gluten intolerant. I would definitely recommend Lucano to anyone looking for authentic Italian food in Kirkwall.

Early midweek dinner. Disappointed that there were no fresh mussels (due in on Thursday) but coudn't fault the quality of the food - pasta with seafood, pizza con carne and tarte della nonno were particular favourites. Three courses for two people with a couple of glasses of wine was £100 which is a bit on the high side but I would go back.

A great Italian restaurant with excellent food and friendly service. We both had pizza which was delicious and freshly cooked (perhaps the base was homemade too?). But lots of other Italian dishes to choose from (I noticed some good-looking pasta dishes and some handsome salads on other tables. Friendly annd efficient service too. A must if you're looking for somewhere to eat in Kirkwall

Lovely service and good food. We had garlic bread and some mozzarella starters. My main was the mixed vegetables with chicken breast. And the banoffee dessert was excellent to finish.

We booked the day before as this small restaurant does get busy. The Italian owner is friendly and always on the go, waiting staff are young and helpful, food was delicious and they also do a half portion main, which I liked, left room for dessert. If I was in kirkwall again, I would return.

We were excited to stop in Lucanos for lunch while in town. We ordered simple lunch with a toastie and soup of the day, which I believe was vegetable, but was told.it was a minestrone. The food was hot, but very bland. No flavor. Nothing exciting and I could make a better sandwich at home. Wish we would have ordered pizza bc they looked good! Atmosphere is plain but very clean...spotless. Service was ok. Very friendly.

Visited here with friends and it was a nice place but no real ambience. I asked the waitress whether they served the fish soup as a main course and she assured me that the portion was large enough to be a main.... It had that taste but not enough fish to constitute a main course....I've had much better elsewhere.

Unfortunately went in to order take away but stood around while staff continued to walk past... without any acknowledgement. The older gentleman (presume owner) said take a seat & I'll take your order.... I realise it was reasonably busy in the restaurant, but if you advertise take away then at least take the order & make people wait !! .

We looked at few places before deciding to go Lucano as its prices looked most reasonable. We went early on a Tuesday and it whilst it was quiet when we arrived it quickly filled up. We ordered a pasta dish of linguine, scallops and salmon and a pizza. Both were very tasty and decent sized portions. Afterwards, we had profiteroles and cheesecake. The cheesecake was possibly the biggest portion of cheesecake I've ever seen but very light so easy to eat. We could see the staff were fairly new, young and inexperienced but they all did a great job on what looked like a pretty busy night. We would definitely visit again

The food was good, as well as the service. The atmosphere was nice and overall I had a great time here. They also have gluten-free pasta, which is very handy for anyone like myself who are celiac.
