Ayre Hotel & Apartments in Orkney Islands

Room fine, nothing special but nice and clean. Restaurant food 4/5, busy here every night.

Nice hotel next to the coast. The apartments are very good in terms of furniture and quality

As part of NC500 trip decided to jump across to Orkney from Gill Bay for the night, lovely island and stayed here for the night. Had an apartment and checked in, man on reception realised we had a dog and after a short discussion was ok for us to stay. They made us welcome and offered us food at the bar. Apartment was great and would go back again!

The hotel is very central to Kirkwall , a 2 minute walk to the centre of town. A 5 minute drive from the main ferry terminal. It has good views. The room we stayed in was adequate and very clean, with ensuite. A bit small for what you pay. They do have appartments if you are a family. The only gripe is slamming of doors by other guests, very inconsiderate. The staff were helpful. The restaurant had delicious food and you could get a relaxing drink at their bar. Overall I would stay here again.

So far the best hotel I've been to on the island. The only slight issue was my inability to use the phone as it wasn't plugged in, but calling the reception from my mobile was the obvious and fairly convenient workaround. The room could use a bit of maintenance (wobbly bathroom flooring for example). A bit noisy neighbours but can't blame the hotel for this. Didn't get a chance to try the breakfast. No other issues whatsoever.

We didn't stay overnight but ate dinner in the cosy restaurant. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious and promptly served.

In short amazing food shame about the service. We went to the Ayre for a family meal and were all left feeling rather disappointed. We were a large booking and had pre-ordered however the table wasn't set for enough people, the food was amazing however mine and another pudding didn't arrive and everyone had finished eating by the time it arrived. We had planned to be there for the night however we only got to order drinks once, the rest of the time we were told to go through to the bar to get our drinks. They didn't seem to be overly busy and when we went through to the lounge again we were told to walk through the restaurant to the bar to get drinks to take back through which many of us decided against which meant fewer sales for them.

Dinner only which was very good indeed. On the harbour road so easy to find. I would advise booking

Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was a good size. There were 2 bars and a restaurant. Food and drinks were good.

Can't comment on the rooms as only stopped for a meal. But first class service and meal had by all. Definitely recommend.

The exterior does not do justice to what is a very relaxing and inviting interior. The bar is a lovely place for a drink with great furniture. The food is good and surprisingly the wine list has a fantastic champagne selection. If in Kirkwall it is very worth calling in.

We stayed at this hotel week past Friday. Food was excellent , service was good . Hotel is beautifully been renovated since our last visit a lot of years ago. Disappointing was the bed as the springs were coming up through the mattress. Please get new mattresses as this was so painful to sleep on. Would not stay there again but would certainly eat there..

Food wonderful. We often use the restaurant here.

The hotel was clean and tidy, it was everything you need as a hotel. Nice view of the sea and very good service on the front desk The restaurant. The food was amazing, I recommend the Paris butter just not as much as that comes with the meal, the 1st server/waitress was amazing she was on point and very attentive, the 2nd server/waiter I had not so much, asked for desert menu and he forgot about that for 30 mins when I asked again he acted like he was busy, I finally got the menu and ordered and half of what I ordered never turned up all this time the waiter was spending his time flirting with bar staff. In the end I left without what I ordered.

Brilliant evening with resident mixologists. Would highly recommend.
